This week we catch up with the one and only James "Super Chikan" Johnson and his raw, electrified, Mississippi juke joint sound. This performance was captured at The Memphis Blues Society’s Bona Fide Blues Festival during Bridging the Blues. Also on the program, BSC contributor, Preston Lauterbach, discusses the Chitlin’ Circuit and The Road to Rock n Roll.

There's only one Bobby Rush. Honed and refined (or unrefined, depending on your point of view) through decades on the Chitlin' Circuit, his self-described "folk-funk" act has become a headlining attraction at festivals and events around the world. But this week we've got something a little different - Bobby Rush, stripped down and raw, backed only by Super Chikan on guitar, and singing his hits and telling the stories behind the songs. Bobby has a career-spanning box set titled Chicken Heads: A 50 Year History Of Bobby Rush coming out on November 27, on Omnivore Recordings. BSC contributor John Paul Keith will also be joining us to continue his series, Made In Memphis.

SHOW #289 – Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With “Musicians You Should Know” Heather Crosse has been performing for 31 years.  Bassist for Heavy Suga' & The SweeTones, in 2008, Heather moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi to follow her Blues dreams & play bass for Super Chikan. This past year, Heather spent touring in the Girls With Guitars Tour for Ruf Records.  Her new album is entitled Groovin’ At The Crosse Roads.  I will speak with Heather about her life, career and music. Billy Evanochko is also known as Billy The Kid and he and his band The Regulators have been wowing audiences for years.  Out of the Pittsbugh, PA area, they have earned their way to the IBC twice, in 2008 and again in 2014.  Their new album is I Can’t Change and Billy finally takes a seat on the Monday Couch to talk about his life and career. Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Chris Gill has been lighting up stages in the mid-South for over twenty years. Armed with sweet guitar rhythms, a soulful voice and a clever, unique songwriter’s perspective, Chris is well known as one of Jackson, Mississippi’s most entertaining performers. One of his projects is with the sensational Derrick L Martin, known as D’Mar. They have just released Take It Like That and I will chat with Chris about his career, his partnership with D’Mar and the new music. Couch Kid New Music features Sugar Brown and his new album, Poor Lazarus.  I’ll speak with Sugar and find out what he has been up to since he first sat on The Couch back on March 31, 2014 while we check out tunes from the album.

In the early 19th century, the fertile delta of northwest Mississippi gave rise to a thriving cotton industry. As White cotton planters turned profits, Blacks toiling in their fields turned to singing and hollering to lighten their load, pass the time, and communicate with each other. Early Mississippi Delta blues songs reflect Southern Blacks' struggle to cope with racial oppression, illiteracy, and poverty. As worksongs grew in length and complexity, blues music moved from the fields to juke joints. Musicians like Charley Patton, Son House, and Robert Johnson accompanied their harsh, raspy vocals (sometimes spoken rather than sung) with powerful, driving rhythms on the guitar or harmonica. The Delta blues style continues to be characterized by raw vocalizing and rhythmic intensity. In addition, Delta blues musicians often employ slide techniques, meaning they move a glass or metal tube called a slide along a guitar's strings to change the notes.
