1967 was arguably the top of the mountain for the Beatles. With the Sgt. Pepper album, they provided the soundtrack that encapsulated global consciousness, while also elevating themselves beyond just a mere pop band; they were artists of the highest order. It was also the beginning of the end, with the death of Brian Epstein kicking off a long series of events that would eventually unravel the band. But by the year's end, they were just too big to fail. As such, "Hello, Goodbye" made it's impact as a return to light-heartedness that the band, and the world, needed. It's an insanely catchy song, sing-a-long-able in every way, and miles removed from the higher plane they'd been operating on for the last year. But it's kind of like cotton candy. It's sweet, and satisfies the sweet tooth, but doesn't have any real substance to it. But boy, it's sure tasty. This week we inaugurate Debbie Davis as the newest member of the 4 timers club! We welcome back one of the best singers in New Orleans to discuss this song, musical grave robbing, commerciality, and more! What do you think about "Hello, Goodbye" at #98? Too high? Too low? Author and Missionary Debbie Davis joined us this week. Listen to her message and learn how to deal with the storms you are traveling through
The yin and yang of Lennon and McCartney are rarely so perfectly on display as they are in the chorus of "Getting Better." Paul's eternal optimist, "I've got to admit it's getting better, a little better all the time" runs right up against the sardonic side of John: "It can't get no worse." On this Sgt. Pepper tune, they find meld an upbeat, bouncy melody with darker, quite self-aware lyrics about the worst parts of one's personality, and the human want to better one's self when love is involved. Sometimes we forget these guys are actually human, and made mistakes just like all of us. Though it maybe doesn't add much to the "concept" theme of Pepper, it's certainly a great and catchy song, and a band moment on a record where those full band moments start to become less frequent. We're thrilled to have our friend Debbie Davis back this week! One of the most revered singers in New Orleans, and now part of a touring bluegrass 80s cover band (how wild is that?), Debbie's knowledge of music and what makes things tick is always a pleasure to get to enjoy. We discuss all matter of issues, from traumatizing kid movies, the worst places to accidentally dose yourself, Jerry Garcia neckties, the lads' self-awareness, and Julia FINALLY gets with the porridge train! Be sure to follow Debbie's new band, Frankie Goes to Dollywood to see when they're headed your way! What do you think? Too high? Too low? Just right? When Mike and Debbie first met in the mid 70s in Philly, they were 14. He and his brother would come around and play rough and Debbie didn't care for any of it. However, Mike was persistent, he kept coming around and the two young lovebirds dated. That was short lived as they split and Mike enlisted in the military. From there, the two would once again find their way back to each other and into the MOVE organization. After an encounter with police, Mike and Debbie would find themselves in prison for what would eventually be 40 years. How did they find their way back to each and how did they keep their love going through it all? Mike and Debbie share those stories and more in this 2019 interview for Black Love Doc.======This month the groundbreaking series Black Love Doc is back for one final season. Black Love means the world to us and we are honored that so many couples have so vulnerably shared their highs and lows and lessons with us so we can bring them to you. Make sure you join us on @OWNtv on July 23rd at 10p/9c and the next day on the Black Love+ app to celebrate and say goodbye to #BlackLoveDoc.Connect with us:@blacklove on Instagram@blacklovedoc on Facebook@blacklovedoc on Twitter

Every clinician, whether they think they work with reproductive issues or not, needs to hear this discussion! Why? First, even if your clinical work doesn't focus on these topics, you're still likely to find them showing up in your office. Next, how we think about incorporating EMDR therapy during the reproductive period, especially during a client's pregnancy, can be applied conceptually to every client! By exploring the hopes, fears, and hesitations that arise when incorporating EMDR during the reproductive period, we illuminate what comes up across clinical practice areas. There are a lot of alarming messages in the therapy world about EMDR and pregnancy. And for many EMDR clinicians, this messaging has instilled an aversion to doing EMDR with our pregnant clients. We're taught to fear the "dangers" of doing EMDR in the first and third trimesters, the threat EMDR has on high-risk pregnancies, and that we should, at all costs, avoid any reprocessing in Phase 4 with our pregnant clients. And while this messaging has a good intention, it loses sight of one of the biggest questions associated with EMDR and pregnancy: what's the risk if we don't do EMDR with our pregnant clients? I sat down with perinatal mental health advocate and expert Dr. Mara Tesler Stein to learn more about EMDR and pregnancy to unpack the past, present, and future behind this misunderstood question. Listen as we talk about the fears we have as clinicians, our responsibilities to our clients, and the research that actually answers the often asked question "Can you do EMDR with a pregnant client?" Want to keep learning with us? Are you ready to grow your clinical reasoning skills in a way that separates you from the traditional thinking of the past? Apply for The Consultation Program today to build your clinical confidence in a comprehensive eight month journey. There's nothing like it. Last week, I started a look back at some of the highlights from the first 100 episodes of Twelve Songs of Christmas. This week, Scott McCaughey of The Minus 5 talks about his relationship to his Christmas songs when a stroke prevented him from playing them at their CD release show. Americana rocker JD McPherson talks about the inspiration for the songs on his modern Christmas classic, Socks, and Magic 101.9 program director Steve Suter takes us behind the scenes on the all-Christmas radio format. New Orleans singer Debbie Davis talks about what it's like to have a Christmas show that becomes a tradition, and songwriter Josh Rouse remembers Christmas music in Spain. In the episode, I mention a few stories I'd link to--my piece for Nola.com on the all-Christmas radio format, and my interview with Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet. If you haven't already done so, please do what you have to do to get Twelve Songs in your podcast feed. You can find us at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, and Spotify. During our post-Christmas break, we went live on the IHeartRadio platform, TuneIn, Audible, and Amazon's podcast platform. Now, you can ask Alexa and Siri to play the Twelve Songs of Christmas podcast and let them pop it up on your voice-controlled personal assistant.
Not many bands in history could, within the space of a few days, go from recording the genre-bending "Strawberry Fields Forever" to the genre-specific "When I'm 64." Then again, not many bands are...The Beatles. Written by Paul at the ripe old age of FOURTEEN, and frequently utilized as a way to kill time when stage power blew at the Casbah or Cavern Club, this jazzy, music hall number may seem worlds apart from the preceding "Within You Without You," but on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles establish the fact that in music and art, there are no rules. Much like "Your Mother Should Know," it's almost punk rock to put a song like this on such a major album. It's delivered with no hint of irony, and full respect for the music of the time it seems to be pulled from. That's how a song like this ends up as a standard, all these years later. Joining us this week for the second time is jazz singer and all around badass, Debbie Davis! One of the premier jazz vocalists in New Orleans, Debbie joins us to talk the through line between jazz and the Beatles, the pop landscape of 66, how to raise a cool kid who's into rock music, and much more! As the world opens up, be sure to follow Debbie to see when you can catch her live, or check out her records. All available at debbiedavismusic.com. What do you think? Too high? Too low? Just right? Last year, some time after Thanksgiving I had to change format and use excerpts from a few interviews to get to everybody I've talked to about Christmas music before the holiday comes. This year, I have to start now since I already have enough interviews to get to February if I ran one per show. This week, I'm talking to some of my favorite people. The Fleshtones are the long-time garage rock gold standard, and singer Peter Zaremba is always a great person to talk to about that corner of the rock 'n' roll world. Since it seems like a shrinking one, we talk about that and how their most recent single, the Spanish-language "Mi Engañaste Bien," plays into that. We talk about the bond between record collectors and, of course, their 2008 Christmas album, Stocking Stuffer. This week also features Susan Cowsill, the youngest member of the '60s family pop band The Cowsills. Susan has never stopped singing or making music, and has been part of New Orleans' music community since she moved here in the 1990s with The Continental Drifters. Cowsills memories are inevitable for her, particularly now that she and two of her brothers have a podcast of their own, The Cowsills Podcast. We talk about that, Branson, some of her favorite Christmas songs, Karen Carpenter, and the experience of recording a Christmas song for Debbie Davis and Matt Perrine's Oh Crap! It's Christmas Vol. 2. Recently, the Numero Group reissue label released the very entertaining Christmas Dreamers: Yuletide Christmas (1960-1972), and this week I talk to Adam Luksetich about the process of pulling the collection together, and how his own relationship to Christmas music affected his choices. Finally, singer Alexandra Scott returns to discuss Mariah Carey's re-entry into the Christmas music arena with her new song, "Fall in Love at Christmas," featuring Khalid and Kirk Franklin. This episode of Twelve Songs is sponsored by Car-Floats.com, which makes reusable fabric stickers for your car. We're still giving away our 2021 listeners-only Christmas mix. Write alex@myspiltmilk.com and request a copy. f you haven't already done so, please do what you have to do to get Twelve Songs in your podcast feed. You can find us at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, and Spotify.

A whole episode about cults that make things EXTRA weird by “keeping it in the family?” Don't blame us, it's what listeners asked for! In our Season 1 Finale, Team Edward introduces The Colt Family, who took the “rewilding” concept and turned it into an orgiastic, multi-generational freak show. Team Kimberly serves up hardcore Christianity with a side order of vampires, breaking down The Wesson Family's nightmarish life as dictated by “frustrated cult leader” and aspiring vampyr dad, Marcus. Beloved New Orleans singer Debbie Davis is joined by Hollywood Assistant Director (Greenbook) Gerson Paz on our judging panel. Robert A. Buell was convicted for the July 17, 1982 murder of 11 year old Krista Lea Harrison. Krista had been only 100 yards from her home when she was kidnapped by Buell. Her body was found 6 days later. It was evidence found at this scene that helped forensic scientist connect Buell to two more murders of young girls. Not limited to just children, Buell also abduct, rape, and torture 28 year old Debbie Davis and 29 year old Patricia Lively. Both Debbie and Patricia survived their attacks. Episode 18 of Clemency: A True Crime Podcast is the final clemency report.
Country singer Janie Fricke's music still sounds like country music, which is rare these days. In late September (when according to Rod Stewart, you really should be back in school), Fricke released A Country Cowgirl Christmas, the first Christmas album in her 43-year recording career. She is now her own label, and she talks about the whole project is based out of her Texas ranch, from figuring out what songs to do at the dinner table to filling CD orders in her home office. Along the way, she focuses on the songs as extensions of her life. In this week's episode, I also talk about singer Debbie Davis and her husband Matt Perrine's efforts to record a second volume of their Oh Crap! It's Christmas so that they can pay New Orleans musicians to work. She's trying to crowdsource funding for the project, and you can find out how to help at her website. Debbie and I talked about Christmas music on the podcast last season.
There's a reason The Beatles are so associated with the word "love." While they wrote a huge amount of songs about romantic love, they became the flag-bearers for love as a universal cause. #204 "The Word" marks the first time we see the Fabs stepping into that spokesperson role, espousing the power of love and peace. Just two years later, on the heels of telling the world love was all they needed, they found a way to turn the most simple melody into an absurdly catchy instrumental for a spaced out druggy film, which is were we find ourselves with #203, "Flying." This week, we finally escape sausage land and get another dose of estrogen on our show! We're joined by powerhouse vocalist Debbie Davis, who's been singing professionally since she was 2 years old. Known as one of New Orleans' premier jazz vocalists, she's performed all over the world, accompanied by a variety of groups, duos, and with her signature ukulele. With Debbie in tow, we discuss the genre-crossing power of a good pop song, the confusion is can cause performers in figuring out how to end songs live where the Beatles faded them out, the Fabs touching on Motown and New Orleans R&B, using body parts for percussion, serving birthday cake to Sir Paul and watching him be a normal human when he walks out the wrong door. This episode was recorded Sept 9th, which was a BONKERS news days. We wondered aloud how weird things would be when we released the episode in early October. Yikes. Debbie's latest album is a duo release with pianist Josh Paxton, and is called "Interesting Times." This episode features the song "Other Than Everything, Everything's Great," as well as a live cover of "When I'm 64" from her and Josh's live album "Vices and Virtues." Both albums, as well as as the rest of Debbie's music, including her WONDERFUL "Oh Crap! It's Christmas" album can be heard at www.debbiedavismusic.com. You should buy them, because she's incredible. Today, Jaclyn and Courtney tell the story of the Southside Strangler that terrorized Richmond and Arlington, VA in the 1980s. This masked rapist escalated to murder and brutally took the lives of Carolyn Hamm, Debbie Davis, Dr. Susan Hellams, Susan Tucker, and Diane Cho. This was the first case to be tried and convicted based on DNA evidence.Email: caffeinatedcrimespod@gmail.comInstagram: @caffeinatedcrimespodSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/caffeinatedcrimes)
Debbie Davis started her career in Internal Medicine having a wonderful Internist mentor Dr Al Chance. He taught her so much about medicine, care of the patients, pharmacology, how to think though very complex medical problems, which are the best test to order and medications to give. Her life was full ....or so she thought. Debbie then met a compounding pharmacist who asked what she knew about bio-identical hormones. He tested her and put her on progesterone which rocked her world and changed her life. That was the moment she knew she needed to learn more! Debbie attended her first hormone course with A4M. Debbie committed her time to learning everything she could about hormone therapy and integrative medicine. She was focused. She completed many courses on hormone replacement therapy and now her practice sees 95% hormone cases.
New Orleans singer Debbie Davis started recording Christmas music with her husband Matt Perrine when that was the Christmas gift that they could afford. In 2014, they released their Christmas music CD, Oh Crap! It's Christmas, and I got the story behind the album then at MySpiltMilk.com. The album led to a yearly holiday show, and the upcoming show--December 15 at Cafe Istanbul in New Orleans at the time of this recording--was the occasion for our conversation. For that reason, we focused more on performing Christmas music. During our conversation, we talked at one point about John Legend's rewrite of "Baby It's Cold Outside." Here it is, if you haven't heard it yet. We also talked about Lowland Hum's version of "Christmastime is Here;" here that is. I interviewed Lowland Hum last season, and you can find that really interesting interview here. Recently, I posted a 12 Songs Christmas music playlist on Spotify. If you want a soundtrack for the season that’s fresh—or fresh to you—I think you’ll enjoy it. If you haven't subscribed to 12 Songs yet, this is a good time to do so because the season ends strong. Go to Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify and subscribe.

Jazz legends, entertainment celebrities and more come into view as Steven Forster: Four Decades of New Orleans Iconography opens this weekend at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Gallery. Also featured are works by designer / photographer Jake Huntr. Steven Forster and Jake Huntr join us for a chat in our studio. And, more seasonal fun comes your way as, Oh Crap! It's Christmas, a musical holiday spectacular returns to Cafe Istanbul. Vocalist Debbie Davis and a host of local luminaries including Susan Cowsill, Meschiya Lake and others celebrate a milestone. Let the holiday music commence! It’s the most magical time of the year…and we are feeling the holiday magic in Confetti Park! I hope you enjoy the culture I’m sharing from Louisiana, the Mississippi Delta, and beyond. The Confetti Park radio show is a weekly 30-minute program that streams online and airs in cities across the United States, made available for free to all community radio stations on the Pacifica Network. We’re going to enjoy the music of the season all this month on every episode. There will be Christmas carols, Hanukkah songs of light, and children’s favorites all month long here in Confetti Park, as well as sweet stories to make you smile. Thanks for joining me, your host, Katy Hobgood Ray! Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer – Fats Domino Joke of the Day – Snow Bank Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane) – Elvis Presley Christmas in Tennessee – Amy Grant and Kid Pan Alley Christmas in New Orleans – Louis Armstrong It Came Upon a Midnight Clear – Michael Doucet Blue Christmas – Linnzi Zaorkski Mele Kalikimaka – Debbie Davis & Matt Perrine All about the music On this episode, Snow Bank, we start off with the delightful Fats Domino, singing about everyone’s favorite reindeer. The we hear from the one and only Elvis Presley, singing “Here Comes Santa Claus.” I bet kids of all ages, even young ones today know that voice… Now, while I still call New Orleans home, I recently took a wonderful job at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. That’s where Elvis lived and first recorded! So let’s hear another song from the Volunteer State… enjoy Amy Grant and Kid Pan Alley with “Christmas in Tennessee,” followed by the great jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong with “Christmas in New Orleans.” How fun to compare the lyrics! They both begin with verses about the distinctive trees of the regions. Christmas in Tennessee The leaves are changing colors, they’re falling off the trees I know it won’t be long now till it’s Christmas in Tennessee. I hope somewhere that Santa Claus is thinking about you and me. He’s gonna bring us lots of toys when it’s Christmas in Tennessee. Christmas in New Orleans Magnolia trees at night, Sparkling bright, Fields of cotton look wintery white When it’s Christmas time in New Orleans A barefoot choir in prayer fills the air, Mississippi folks are gathering there, ‘Cuz it’s Christmas time in New Orleans. Next we hear from the marvelous Cajun musician Michael Doucet with “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, followed by a jazzy version of “Blue Christmas” by Louisiana chanteuse Linnzi Zaorkski (who was raised in Alexandria and Shreveport and now calls Bush, Louisiana home). Last we hear a Hawaiian Christmas song, “Mele Kalikimaka,” performed by singer Debbie Davis & sousaphonist Matt Perrine, a married couple who are busy musicians in New Orleans (as are their musical kids). Also featured in this episode are two delighted holiday stories. One is a fun little tale from Justin Wilson, an old Cajun cook from Roseland, with “Santa Claus and the Mouse.” And we hear “The Kitty at the Manger” told by Mary Jean Chester of Des Allemands, Louisiana. The Confetti Park radio show and podcast is supported by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation and Music Rising at Tulane University. Thanks for listening. Remember to look for the magic in every day!

Debbie Davis was a quiet, single woman who liked baking cookies and reading mystery novels. What a police patrolman found in her apartment bedroom on the morning of Sept. 19, 1987, would mark the beginning of a nightmare that would haunt and terrify the city of Richmond, Virginia, for months to come. Featuring interviews with retired homicide detectives, FBI profilers, prosecutors and friends and family of the victims, Southern Nightmare is the story of how the South Side Strangler serial killer was brought to justice by the use of DNA evidence, years before the O.J. Simpson trial or TV shows like CSI popularized the use of DNA as a forensic investigative tool. Want more Southern Nightmare? Are you in marketing and need to develop a plan for a maturing product? In this interview, Debbie Davis, Vice President of Global Marketing, provides a comprehensive blueprint of how to take a mature product and create a new marketing program that will enhance value, solve challenges and give sales reps new innovations to share with customers. Debbie describes how her team developed a solution for customers who needed to collect data and track ROI for product effectiveness and was able to win leadership support. 6 Steps to Transforming the Life of a Product Start by changing the focus of the message to be solution driven. Consider ways that other products can be leveraged together across categories and services to offer greater features together. Look for ways to help sales reps continue to have opportunities. Look for additional features that weren’t considered before to help reinforce existing customer loyalty and stay ahead of the competition. Share data proof points on the value proposition. In the short term if you are in healthcare, using scientific studies and customer case studies to help support your idea and in the long term and are at a lower cost point than quality improvement studies and clinical studies which are take longer to complete. Create a road map. Identify unmet customer needs and what the next generation technologies might be able to be used to produce a more consumable model for sales and leadership. Prepare an evidence plan. Use the information you have gathered and before presenting any ideas, be sure the plan is tailored to key stakeholders. Include a focus on the return on investment. Enable Customer Driven Solutions. Debbie shared how her company created an online tool that customers could partner with the company where they could collect data on their own and use the clinical and financial metrics to generate charts and data over time. A benefit of enacting a customer centric plan focused on additional features and solutions is that product loyalty increases when they feel personally invested and they ownership and validate proof of concept. Integrating innovation and a solution that hasn’t yet been tried before can be a key differentiator in staying ahead of the competition.
