Many mark the start of the singer-songwriter genre to have begun when Carole King released her second studio album, the iconic Tapestry. As would be expected from a singer-songwriter, all of the songs on the album were either written or co-written by King. Tapestry is considered one of the greatest albums of all time in the soft rock genre.Born Carol Joan Klein in Manhattan, King began piano lessons at four years of age. Her upbringing included friendship with Paul Simon and dating Neil Sedaka. In the 50's at the age of 17 she met and married Jerry Goffin with whom she would team up on songwriting through the 60's - King writing the music and Goffin writing the lyrics. They had several successful songs during the 60's including "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (The Monkees), "I'm Into Something Good" (Herman's Hermits), and "Up On the Roof" (the Drifters). King and Goffin divorced by 1968, and King moved to Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles to re-start her recording career.Tapestry features both new and old songs of Carole King's catalog. Several new friends from the Laurel Canyon area appear on the album, including James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. Fellow songwriter Toni Stern co-wrote two of the songs, including the hit "It's Too Late."The album was a hit, spending 313 weeks on the Billboard Charts (second only to "Dark Side of the Moon" in time on the chart). It also was a critical success, taking the Grammy for Album of the Year at the 1972 Grammy awards. King announced her retirement from music in May 2012, but has done a few things since then, including a live performance of Tapestry in Hyde Park in 2016. Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Wayne while Bruce presents this soft rock album for this week's podcast.TapestryThe title track to the album is a look back on life as a colorful combination of threads woven into a picture or pattern, but not one intended to last. This is a deeper cut which was not released as a single.Where You LeadSeveral songs became hits for other artists while the album was still on the charts, including this one. Barbara Streisand recorded this song for her 1971 album, and it reached number 40. The song takes its inspiration from the book of Ruth in the Bible. It was also the theme song for the television series "Gilmore Girls." Toni Stern collaborated with King to write this song. You've Got a FriendThis is another song which became a hit for another artist. James Taylor did this on his 1971 album, "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon," making it to number 1 on the US charts. The two albums were being produced concurrently, and Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Danny Kortchmar perform on both King's version and on Taylor's version. King has said the song is a response to the line in James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" which says "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend." So Far AwayJames Taylor is on acoustic guitar for this piece, and King is on piano. It went to number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was on the charts in September 1971. It starts with a focus on the physical distance between lovers, then moves on to emotional distance. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the serial Danger Island (from the television series “The Banana Splits Adventure Hour”) This live action 10-minute adventure short appeared as a part of "The Banana Splits Adventure Hour," which concluded this month. STAFF PICKS:Ain't No Sunshine by Bill WithersLynch leads off the staff picks with Withers' breakthrough single from his debut album, "Just As I Am." The inspiration for this song was the 1962 film "Days of Wine and Roses," which portrays two characters who were alcoholics. The idea is that someone may not be right for you, but you miss them regardless. Signs by Five Man Electrical Band"And the sign said 'long haired freaky people need not apply!" Rob brings us a signature song from a Canadian band. The song originally appeared as a B-side to a less successful song called "Hello Melinda Goodbye," but became successful on its own. Frontman Les Emerson wrote this song after seeing so many billboards in Los Angeles which obscured the natural scenery.Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get by The DramaticsGreg features the title song from the debut album of R&B group The Dramatics. This song contrasting the fakeness of people with the authenticity of the singer went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the R&B chart. It fuses a Motown feel with a Latin undertone.Thin Line Between Love and Hate by The PersuadersBruce brings us a cautionary tale about a guy who comes home late at night, finding his girl smiling and ready to cook him some dinner. He learns his lesson when he wakes up in the hospital, beaten to within an inch of his life. This song by a New York R&B group made it to number 15 on the US charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Rock by Atomic RoosterWe close out with an instrumental from a British rock band originally co-formed by prog rock organist Vincent Crane and percussionist Carl Palmer. Contrasts niceness with kindness, requiring tough love.* Nostalgia: Challenges fixation on past events (e.g., slavery, civil rights, WWII, the Holocaust) across racial and cultural groups, arguing it traps people in outdated conflicts. Rejects both negative and positive nostalgia (e.g., 1950s) to focus on the present and Christ's return.* Feminism: Criticized for elevating women above biblical roles, leading to abortion, rejection of gender roles, child mutilation, divorce culture, and low testosterone in men. Notes cultural shifts toward traditional values, especially among young men in Christian ministries.* Spiritual Reflection and Closing (01:57:59 - 02:01:02)* Biblical call to action from Micah 5:13-15, urging the destruction of idols to prevent future generations from falling away.* Prayer for boldness to smash idols, follow Christ, and love God wholeheartedly.* Emphasis on tearing down “high places” (idolatrous structures) alongside returning to God.* Reminder that the devil exploits extreme reactions (e.g., feminism vs. misogyny), making Jesus the only true path.Notable Quotes:* “That's such garbage science that it's astounding.” (On red meat studies)* “If you worship women, you can say, well, this is for the benefit of women that I'm killing babies, 50% of which are women.” (On feminism and abortion)* “Nobody likes the guy who peaked in high school.” (On nostalgia)* “We can't just go back to God. We have to tear down the high places.” (On smashing idols)Call to Action:* Visit kingsplaining.com for new t-shirts.* Like, share, and subscribe to the podcast.* Tell a friend to join the “Rube Empire.”Closing: The episode blends humor, conviction, and provocation to challenge listeners to reject cultural idols, pursue Christ, and advance God's kingdom. Comprising the Brothers Kinnon (Chris on vocals and guitar; Jeff on drums), riff-master Sean Casey (guitar), and classically educated bass player Enzo Figliuzzi, the Canadian/California-based band has played with everybody from garage legends like the Dirtbombs to arena stars Kings of Leon, making SXSW best-of lists numerous times, and in between hanging out with the Rolling Stones' legendary manager Andrew Loog Oldham. But putting integrity first had a cost: obscurity. Lions in the Street began their career by signing and then walking away from the troubled TVT Records (NIN, Pitbull, Little Jon), Nickelback's 604 Records (Carly Rae Jepson), and legendary manager Allen Kovac (Motley Crue, The Cars, Blondie, The Bee Gees), earning them a spot on the music industry's blacklist. Years in the wilderness resulted—working as a garbageman for almost a decade, surviving cancer, serious workplace injuries, and almost deadly car accidents, and going back to school. Yet, despite experiencing the best and worst of the of old music business—from hanging out with Todd Rundgren, Bob Ezrin, and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, to seeing an A&R guy almost fired just for going to see them play—the band somehow kept going, releasing music piecemeal. For example, Lions in the Street released an EP in 2013 on British legend Sandy Roberton's label. Roberton ran Blue Horizon, the English label that launched the 60s British Blues rock movement with John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, and Rory Gallagher. Now the streaming platforms revolution has given Lions in the Street a new life an audience, allowing them to release largely-unheard music—finally finished and remixed/remastered. What starts in Laurel Canyon in the early 70s spread outward to the world, thanks to King's revolutionary 1971 album Tapestry. 50 years later, those songs are still with us, and "You've Got a Friend" remains one of the most meaningful tributes to simple, platonic love. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/593 Presented by: Northern Rockies Adventures, Drifthook Fly Fishing, Visit Helena, MT, TroutRoutes Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Join us as we dive deep into fly fishing Belize with Damien Nurre, the guiding force behind Blue Horizon Lodge, renowned for its world-class fly fishing and unbeatable local guides. Damien shares his transformation from a snowboarding enthusiast to a fly fishing guide and lodge manager in one of the most coveted angling destinations on the planet. This episode is a treasure trove for fly anglers dreaming of the ultimate Grand Slam, offering insider tips on tackling Belize's elusive permit, bonefish, and tarpon. Whether you're plotting your next fishing adventure, Damien's insights and stories will transport you to the abundant waters of Belize, promising an experience you won't want to miss. Episode Chapters with Damien Nurre on Fly Fishing Belize 1:35 - Damien Nurre shares his journey from being a snowboarding enthusiast in the Midwest with no knowledge of fly fishing to becoming deeply involved in the sport. His curiosity was sparked at the University of Montana, where his roommate's passion for fly fishing influenced him. Damien's first fly fishing experience was on the Bitterroot River, and despite only catching one fish, he was fascinated by the process. This interest led him to become a fly fishing guide in Oregon, manage a lodge, and eventually move to Belize to work at Turneffe Flats, focusing on managing and running the fishing program. Later, he was approached by the parent company of Blue Horizon to evaluate the lodge's business performance. After a thorough assessment, he was asked to manage Blue Horizon and other lodges in Southern Belize since 2018. 5:43 - He details his progression into guiding on the Deschutes River, starting by purchasing an outfitting business from Num, alongside Chris O'Donnell. After parting ways with O'Donnell, Damien partnered with Full Line Field Outfitters, where he took on a significant role. Eventually, he seized an opportunity to buy a property and launch his own business, Deep Canyon Outfitters, focusing primarily on trout fishing camp trips along the upper Deschutes and steelhead fishing in the fall. 7:03 - He shares his experiences when he joined Blue Horizon, particularly focusing on Lincoln Westby, a well-known and elderly gentleman associated with the lodge. Despite having heard negative opinions about Lincoln from competitors and facing initial apprehension, Damien's interaction with Lincoln completely changed his perspective. 9:19 - We dig into the unique aspects of Blue Horizon Lodge, particularly emphasizing its exceptional guide staff. Damien highlights that, unlike other fishing lodges, their guides share meals and happy hour with guests, fostering a deeper connection beyond the fishing experience. If you also want to experience their top-notch guiding service, join our ongoing Belize School giveaway at wetflyswing.com/giveaway. 12:00 - Damien emphasizes that all their guides are local Belizeans. Belize has a unique regulation requiring tour guides to be naturalized citizens, which involves living in Belize for a calendar year and passing a comprehensive guide school course. Lincoln stands out at 83 for his enthusiasm and skill in guiding, despite having some health issues. Lincoln is portrayed as a mentor to younger guides, ensuring the continuation of quality guiding. Among the guides, Dan is highlighted as one of the top requested guides, having dedicated himself to fly fishing and becoming well-known in the community for his expertise, especially in catching permits. 18:06 - We talk about the unique fishing opportunities at Blue Horizon, focusing on catching permits. Damien explains that while permits are universally challenging to catch, Blue Horizon offers a distinct advantage due to the consistency and number of opportunities anglers get to catch them. On average, it's realistic to expect about 10 shots at permit each day and more during good conditions. The fishery's shallow waters make the experience visually exciting and more challenging, as permits in shallow waters tend to be more wary. He also highlights the benefits of fishing during the summer months, noting that while the popular season starts in mid-February and goes through early June, the summer offers more solitude and less pressured fish, making it his favorite time to fish. Despite fewer anglers, the quality of fishing remains high, with a good chance of catching migratory tarpon in addition to permits. Bonefish are available year-round, providing a nearly guaranteed catch. 21:49 - Damien walks us through the logistics of visiting Blue Horizon Lodge, highlighting the lodge's unique location and the journey to get there from the US. Travelers can fly directly to Belize City from several major US cities, then take a short commuter flight to Placencia, where a driver from Blue Horizon picks them up for a boat ride to the lodge. Their area is characterized by hard coral flats, deep channels, and abundant marine life, making it ideal for permit fishing and snorkeling. 26:05 - We talk about Damien's experience working at Blue Horizon since 2018 and how it compares to his previous fishing activities in Oregon. Damien describes the fishing in Belize as significantly different, emphasizing it as more of a hunting game that requires stealth, precision, and understanding the cautious nature of fish like permit, which are notorious for inspecting flies closely before often rejecting them. Despite these challenges, Damien highlights the similarities between the two experiences, notably the joy of being immersed in nature and escaping the routine of daily life. 27:30 - Regarding fishing opportunities during August, Damien mentions a high chance of catching the grand slam—permit, tarpon, and bonefish—due to the unique conditions of the summer months. He explains that the summer offers less pressured fish and more solitary experiences, unlike the busier seasons. Mornings might start with tarpon fishing near the lodge, followed by targeting permit, and ending with bonefish, generally considered the easiest of the three to catch. Damien's enthusiasm for summer fishing underscores the potential for excitement and success in Belize's diverse and vibrant fishery. 29:49 - He tells us the criteria for achieving a Grand Slam in Belize's fly fishing scene, clarifying that it involves catching three out of four specific species—bonefish, permit, tarpon, and snook—in a single day. Catching all four qualifies as a Super Slam, a feat recently accomplished by an angler at Blue Horizon. He also provides insight into the operations and daily routines at the lodge, located on Northeast Key, where guides and guests coordinate based on tidal conditions to plan their fishing outings. 31:32 - Damien explains that the temperature around the ocean in Belize typically stays around 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. He points out that May is the hottest month due to lower wind activity and being the driest month. While temperatures during fishing can get up to 90 degrees, exceeding that is rare. 32:50 - He describes Blue Horizon Lodge as an intimate and friendly place, ideal for fishing vacations with friends. The lodge has five guestrooms accommodating up to ten guests, featuring full-size beds, air conditioning, private bathrooms, and island-wide Wi-Fi, ensuring connectivity throughout. 36:49 - Damien offers several key tips for anglers heading to Belize, especially those who aim to catch permit, a notoriously challenging species. He emphasizes the importance of casting the fly as close to the fish as possible, aiming for it to land in the fish's line of sight rather than far ahead of it. Damien notes that direct casting might seem counterintuitive as it could spook the fish, but it often results in a hookup. He advises against panicking if the fish is spooked, suggesting instead to let the fly sit, as the fish might return to its original spot. Another crucial tip is about the stripping rate; slow and short strips are more effective, especially when using crab flies, mimicking natural prey behavior. Damien highlights that stopping the fly's movement altogether can be a successful strategy to entice a bite, as it imitates a crab trying to hide. These strategies are grounded in understanding the behavior of the target species and adapting techniques to mimic natural prey movements accurately. 44:28 - He tells us the types of flies that are effective for permit fishing at Blue Horizon, mentioning that while each guide has their favorites, certain flies are consistently preferred, such as the Bauer's Flats Crabs, Camo Crabs from S&S Flies, and Contraband Crabs. 46:12 - He encourages exploring the Belize mainland, citing Placencia Village for its accessibility and vibrant community, the Cayo District for its jungle adventures, and the ATM Cave for its historical and adventurous appeal. He suggests Belize as a great destination for families, offering a range of activities beyond fishing, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and relaxing on the beach. With options to stay in various family-friendly resorts operated by Blue Horizon's parent company, visitors can combine fishing expeditions with family vacations, ensuring a comprehensive experience of Belize's diverse attractions. 53:17 - He compares Turneffe Flats to Blue Horizon, highlighting that the former is located about 30 miles off the coast of Belize City and offers a different fishery, with a stronger focus on bonefish and good opportunities for permit fishing. Tarpon fishing is available year-round, similar to Blue Horizon, but the best tarpon fishing occurs in summer. 54:18 - In the conservation segment, Damien praises Craig Hayes, the owner of Turneffe Flats, for his significant contributions to conservation in Belize, more so than any NGO according to Damien. Hayes was instrumental in enacting catch-and-release laws and played a pivotal role in banning gillnets in Belize, known for their indiscriminate impact on marine life. The ban, established in the fall of 2020, allows guides and the fisheries department to remove gillnets found in the water. Damien notes that some guides take the initiative to destroy gillnets they encounter, though this action carries risks. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/593

Antonio Deon Tarver, born on November 21st in Orlando, Florida is a U.S. Olympic Bronze-Medalist, Philanthropist, Podcast Host, Actor, Boxing commentator and Former U.S. National Gold-Medal winning Boxer. Antonio made his professional debut with his first fight with Joaquin Garcia at the legendary Blue Horizon boxing Venue in Philadelphia in 1997. Throughout his first 16 fights of his career, which he's all won, with an impressive feat of 14 out of 16 of those fights being won by knockout–Tarver quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world and had so many eyes on him from Florida... All the way to the local boxing hub in Philadelphia. In April of 2003, Tarver was placed in a bout against Montel Griffin, who at the time, was the reigning WBC and IBF light-heavyweight champion. After about a full hour in the ring, 12 rounds and after successfully flooring Griffin in the 1st and 12th rounds of the fight, Antonio was crowned the new champion after a unanimous decision. In May of 2004 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Antonio did something that would surprise many... He was set to do a rematch with Roy Jones Jr where he not only regained the WBC title, but also knocked RJJ out in the 2nd round–Where Jones had only been knocked out once in the then 50-fight entirety of his boxing career. Fast forwarding to 2006 after Antonio had become a household name after defeating Roy Jones, he appeared on the covers of iconic boxing Magazines such as The Ring and KO. He was also given the opportunity to be casted as Mason “The Line” Dixon in the Rocky Balboa installment of the film's franchise that was released the same year. Antonio has since then gone on to be a boxing analyst for Showtime Championship Boxing, a spectator at some of the world's most memorable boxing events and being a co-host on Friday Night Fights. Thank you to Antonio for stopping by the I Am Athlete studio to share his perspective on all things life and giving us insight on his past that built the resilient, brute force of nature that he is. Happy Early Birthday & Happy Scorpio SZN to you as well!

Chasing the elusive permit fish is an exhausting endeavor for the most seasoned anglers. So why would a total newbie even try? That was the question facing Paddy O'Connell, who was invited to fish for permit at the spectacular Blue Horizon lodge in Belize with a legendary guide. Paddy had always embraced adventure, but like a lot of outdoor athletes, he hated being terrible at new sports in front of other people…which meant that this trip would be a radical—and likely painful—learning experience, no matter what. The past decade has seen a vibrant investment market centered on food and agri technology, in part driven by the twin imperatives of sustainability and resilience in a changing climate and in response to changing consumer demands. Some returns have been atmospheric such as alternative protein first movers like Beyond Meat. Large agri and food houses have been keen investors and buyers as they respond to shareholder demands. However, this is a challenging space where biological systems rule and many investors have been left with low yields. Our guest to discuss the world of food and ag tech is Lindsay McCorkle, Director, Ventures and Growth Equity at Blue Horizon, an investment fund focused on the sector. Foodtech is the largest market, four times bigger than software. Learn about the future of foodtech from one of its forefront investors. Ep.#58 Björn Witte @ Blue Horizon - Tech4Climate Podcast by Startup basecamp PART 1: Meet the investor In today's episode, we are speaking with Björn Witte, Managing Partner and CEO Blue Horizon. It was very interesting to have Björn on the show and learn about the foodtech sector from someone who has significant experience first as an operator and then as an investor in the sector. He now works for Blue Horizon, a next-generation impact investment firm with a lifecycle investment philosophy. Their mission is to fill a role in the food system by understanding what drives the market and use it to produce a double positive return on investment: one for the investors, the other for the planet. Björn began his career restructuring companies but quickly shifted over to the foodtech space as a way to make more impact. He began to work a lot with farmers in India and Asia to build up their productivity and at one point, even became a shareholder in a food production company. Eventually, he met Roger, Blue Horizon's founder, and decided to join. He now leads a diverse team across entrepreneurship, finance, and academia with 78 deals across the world. Björn is passionate about food, a passion that he uses to guide us on a journey across the foodtech ecosystem, and the world's largest market. In our discussion, Björn specifically hones in on alternative protein as a means to produce the greatest impact, but how? What are the key drivers of the market? What are the major roadblocks? How does he respond to critiques of the Frankensteinization of food? How can innovation in the sector fast-track our goal toward zero emissions? Part 2: My secret sauce: In the second part of the show, Björn explains what advice he has for founders looking to fundraise or enter the foodtech space. He also gives a few recommendations on books, tv-shows, and reports he has used to understand foodtech and climatetech more generally.

In this episode we welcome the legendary Pete Wingfield to Hammersmith to discuss his career as a keyboard player, record producer and music journalist. We start by asking Pete about Soulbeat, the fanzine he started at Wellington College, and about the network of R&B fans in mid-'60s Britain. From there we learn about Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label (and Chipping Norton studio); about Pete's 1967 trip to America, where he met Otis Redding at Stax studios; and about the Breakfast Special album that produced his big 1975 hit 'Eighteen with a Bullet'.Fast-forwarding to 1981, Pete tells Barney, Mark & Jasper about Sylvia Robinson, the Sugarhill Gang, and cutting Mel Brooks' rap hit 'It's Good to be the King' in a basement studio in Mortlake — the same place where he produced Dexys Midnight Runners' No. 1 hit 'Geno'. A brief discussion of Dexys and Searching for the Young Soul Rebels leads into recollections of touring with the reunited Everly Brothers, producing the Proclaimers' '500 Miles' and playing on Paul McCartney's 1999 covers album Run Devil Run.Clips from Cliff White's 1980 audio interview with New Orleans great Lee Dorsey provide the perfect excuse to express our abiding love of Lee and of Allen Toussaint's Crescent City soul sound. Staying in a southern vein, we mark the passing of country-soul king Joe Simon, who died in December. We also bid a sad farewell to beloved Radio 1 deejay Janice Long.Mark talks us out with quotes from pieces about Kathy Kirby, Van Dyke Parks, Prince's Controversy and Shelby Lynne, while Jasper brings us up to date with his thoughts on Taku Sugimoto, Wolf Alice and Sampa the Great.Pieces discussed: Pete Wingfield, Twenty Essential Soul Records, The Sugarhill Gang, Dexys Midnight Runners, Searching for the Young Soul Rebels, Lee Dorsey audio, Wingfield on Toussaint, Joe Simon, Janice Long, George Harrison and Eric Clapton, The Band, Prince's Controversy, Kathy Kirby, Van Dyke Parks, Shelby Lynne, Taku Sugimoto, Wolf Alice and Sampa the Great.

“Tienes que rechazar tu destino para crear tu propio camino” Millan Ludeña, Conferencista Motivacional, Ganador de un World Record Guinness, Protagonista del Documental From Core to Sun, Most Inspiring Man of The Year por Men's Health, Ted Talk Speaker, Ganador de una Blue Horizon Medal del US Air Force.
