Part 2 of our conversation with guitarist-songwriter-singer-storyteller Dave Alvin begins with him discussing musical biopics and the one that put him off the genre for good. (Hint: He was in it.) Has he seen A Complete Unknown? How did he wind up actually recording with Bob Dylan? Will any of these recordings ever come out? Alvin also revisits his early songwriting efforts, including the first song he ever wrote and “Marie Marie,” which he wrote for the Blasters and became an international hit for Welsh rocker Shakin' Stevens. More recently, Alvin had to overcome neuropathy from his chemotherapy treatments to resume playing guitar. How much of his focus now is on being a musician, as opposed to writing songs? What's next? And what was it like when he left the Blasters and realized that not all bands fight? (Photo by Leslie Campbell.)
Dave Alvin has had such an epic career that we're going to need two episodes to fit it all in. Much of Part 1 spotlights Alvin's values as a musician. As he tells it, the Blasters, the revved-up L.A. roots-rock band for which he was the main songwriter/guitarist, had lots of rules. The Third Mind, his current psychedelic improvisatory band, has few. Why does the latter appeal to him now? How did seeing Jimi Hendrix twice inspire him? What were his stints in the Knitters and X like? When Alvin emerged on the other side of cancer treatments, why was restarting the Third Mind his top priority? How is what they're doing the opposite of “choreographed modern music”? At a time when, Alvin says, “most pop music is a Broadway show,” why is it important to be a little out of control? (Photo by Steven Dewall.)
Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore are still here! Join us as we present great music and fun conversation with this wonderful duo of musical legends. Also on stage is Brennen Leigh from Texas who shares her flavorful blend of classic Country music. Nick also has a sit-down with Lisa Morey, inventor of EcoBLox, to discuss the future of building with ancient materials. That's all this week on eTown! Send us a textOn this episode, guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer Dave Alvin (The Blasters, X, The Knitters, The Third Mind, solo) digs deep into the 1969 Underground Blues compilation album. He explains how he became acquainted with the album and why it was such an important part of his introduction to the folk blues tradition. Dave also dissects the work of some of the artists featured on the album, including Lightnin' Hopkins, Jimmy Reed and John Lee Hooker. Dave talks about how one of his bands, The Third Mind, is connected to the folk blues tradition and how it's not—and he discusses their upcoming live album (Live Mind) and other possible plans for 2025.You can keep up with Dave and The Third Mind on Instagram!Dave: @davealvinoriginalThe Third Mind: @thethirdmindDave is also on Facebook at @davealvin.You can learn more about Dave's and The Third Mind's music on his website, davealvin.net.Al is on Bluesky at @almelchior.bsky.social. Michael Jerome had been drumming in a post-industrial metal band when he auditioned for Richard Thompson in 1999, little knowing he would be this brilliant guitarist's percussive foil for the next 25 years and counting. Jerome also has played with Charlie Musselwhite, the Blind Boys of Alabama and, for several years, John Cale. He's been Better Than Ezra's drummer since 2009 and played and toured with Slash for his latest album—and what started as an experimental side project is now moving center stage: The Third Mind, the improvisatory psychedelic band assembled by Dave Alvin and Victor Krummenacher. As thoughtful in conversation as he is dazzling behind his kit, Jerome tells how he developed his unique style and adapts it for each project—and he relates what it's like to be in Los Angeles now as he tries to help friends and others who have lost almost everything in the catastrophic wildfires. Mark Karan is best known for his extended time on the Grateful Dead scene as lead guitarist for Bob Weir & Ratdog, The Other Ones, Phil & Friends, and Planet Drum. But Mark's musical reach extends far beyond the land of the Dead. His six-string contributions have complemented recordings and tours with Delaney Bramlett, Dave Mason, Sophie B. Hawkins, the Rembrandts, and Paul Carrick. Mark has been a guest for sit-ins with the Allman Brothers, Trey Anastasio, Gov't Mule, Jackie Greene, Levon Helm, Little Feat, and many more. The San Francisco-based singer-songwriter-guitarist has recently been playing well-received live shows with the Grammy Award-winning Dave Alvin in a newly minted interpretive Americana band called “the Third Mind,” touring actively with “Live Dead & Brothers,” an interpretive “mash-up” of “Grateful Dead” & “Allman Brothers” material… touring with the David Gilmour/Pink Floyd inspired “Gilmour Project” & playing nearer to home with his own band, “Mark Karen's Buds.” Mark also recently finished recording and mixing his newest record and is embarking on what is possibly the most personal phase of his career. He joins Vivian to discuss it all.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It was a wonderful experience talking with someone I've admired for so long. I love her songs, I love her voice. And she's just incredibly cool. In additional to her solo work, there's such a long list of great bands and artists she's performed with.A list that includes – Pat Benatar, The dB's, The Del-Lords, Dave Alvin, The Golden Palominos, Marshall Crenshaw, Van Dyke Parks, Vic Chesnutt, Wilco, Richard Thompson and many more. Syd's debut solo album Surprise featured a lot of her pals from that list and her second album, War and Peace was backed by none other than that fantastic and much-loved band from Springfield, The Skeletons. In this episode of Backstage Sonoma, host Steve Roby interviews renowned guitarist Mark Karan. Known for his extensive involvement with the extended Grateful Dead family, Mark Karan provides a deep dive into his illustrious career, his musical influences, and his current projects. Roby starts the interview by introducing Mark's impressive resume, highlighting his 12-year tenure with Bob Weir and RatDog and collaborations with notable artists, including Delaney Bramlett and Jesse Colin Young. Mark shares anecdotes from his early days, discussing how he first encountered the Grateful Dead as a young fan and later transitioned into playing with the band after Jerry Garcia's death. The conversation shifts to Mark's experiences and favorite memories from collaborating with musicians like Delaney Bramlett. One particularly cherished memory involves Delaney complimenting Mark as his favorite guitarist during an interview for a documentary. Mark discusses his musical inspirations, the influence of the song 'Good Day for the Blues' on his career, and his admiration for songwriter David Grissom. They play the track for listeners, showcasing Mark's interpretive approach to music. Roby and Karan then introduce another track, 'Annie Don't Lie,' originally written by Alex Call. Mark explains how he encountered the song during his time with Huey Lewis and the News and shares its significance. In the latter part of the interview, Mark gives an update on his upcoming album 'Welcome to Your Life.' He elaborates on the challenges faced during its production, including delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and his mixed feelings about releasing albums in the modern music era. They briefly mention Mark's touring schedule with various projects, such as the Gilmore Project, Live Dead and Brothers, and Dave Alvin and the Third Mind. Mark shares his enthusiasm for these collaborations and the creative fulfillment they bring him. The interview wraps up with information on Mark Karan's August 16 performance at the California Theatre, and where listeners can find more about his music and tour dates.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, July 23, 2024. It's hot out there! The WVDNR offers some advice for outdoor enthusiasts to stay cool and hydrated…Check out the great lineup of shows from Mountain Stage and get your tickets today…and find a rewarding career in public safety -- check out who's hiring…on today's daily304. #1 – From WSAZ-TV – With temperatures hitting 90 degrees for 23 of the past 30 days, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources says outdoor enthusiasts need to take precautions and plan ahead. Beating the heat has been critically important this summer across the country. Just this past week a camper at Kanawha State Forest was treated for heat stroke. Park Superintendent Clark Sanford offered advice for those taking part in outside activity: “You want to pack at least one bottle of water for every two miles that you plan to be out hiking, and then to eat and to have proper salt intake as well,” he said. “Your body needs that salt to be able to hold onto the water to remain hydrated.” Sanford added that if you get in trouble and you don't have cell service, you should still use your phone to call 911. Many cell phones, in the case of an emergency, can connect with satellites to get help. Officials say it's critical to listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, slow down, take a rest and find a way to cool down. In 1969, Kirchen took Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen to California and they developed a reputation as musical "outlaws" that were praised by other outlaw musicians and bands like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band.Kirchen's band "played a collection of rock 'n' roll, hard-core country, boogie and rockabilly sounds produced in a "high-octane mix" that made them a "happening" group in the San Francisco Bay area. Kirchen began to develop as guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and performer. He became known for his vocal and guitar work on such songs as "Mama Hated Diesels", "Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues" from the band's albums, Hot Licks, Cold Steel & Truckers' Favorites and Lost in the Ozone. His live performance work was captured on the 1973 album Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas, recorded at the Armadillo World Headquarters in 1973.Kirchen's Commander Cody band broke apart in 1976 and he formed a "swing orchestra" called the Moonlighters and began a decades-long collaboration with British musician Nick Lowe. Lowe produced the Moonlighters' second album Rush Hour, and Kirchen toured with Lowe and joined him in the studio from time to time. During this period Kirchen also worked on albums with Elvis Costello, Gene Vincent, and Link Wray. Kirchen was one of the musicians that pioneered the Americana movement in the 1980s, and also with being a founding father of "twangcore," along with Dave Alvin, Wilco and Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys. Kirchen's signature sound has been dubbed "dieselbilly" and incorporates elements of country, blues, rockabilly, Western swing and boogie-woogie, laced with themes of American truck driving music. Kirchen's work in the early 1970s with Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen helped set the stage for the singers like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and other outlaw country bands with his recordings of songs like "Seeds And Stems."Kirchen is said to have "one of the most distinctive, pure-Fender Telecaster tone guitar sounds in modern music". Kirchen was named "The Titan of The Telecaster" by Guitar Player magazinefor his musical prowess on the Fender Telecaster guitar. He played a 1959 model with a maple fretboard and sunburst finish that he calls the "coal burner" and acquired in 1967 when he exchanged his Gibson SG with a stranger on a bus.He retired that guitar in the early 2010s in favor of a Telecaster with a wider neck.

X always had elements of Americana and Country on the edges of their music but never as straight forward or overt as when they swapped their legendary guitar player Billy Zoom for another LA legend (Dave Alvin of the Blasters) and changed their name to the Knitters. Half of the songs on their debut are covers but they fit so neatly alongside the John Doe / Exene Cervenka originals that it's hard to pinpoint exactly when it was recorded. It's a timeless sound for sure, but how does it hold up on 2023? Dave Alvin formed Americana band The Blasters in Downey with his brother Phil, then went solo in the 1980s, but returned to show KCRW around. In the 1990s, Downey rapidly shifted its demographics to become mostly a Latino area. It was then labeled “Mexican Beverly Hills,” but longtime residents say that's unfair. A nonprofit gallery in downtown Downey has been instrumental in developing an art scene in the city. Now it faces possible closure.
