In this episode of Reading With Your Kids, Jed Doherty welcomes author Matthew Burgess and illustrator Robin Rosenthal to celebrate their charming new picture book, Serafina Makes Waves. Serafina is no ordinary cat—she's full of catitude, completely confident on land, but absolutely terrified of water. When her parents sign her up for swim lessons before a family vacation, she'll do just about anything to avoid getting in the pool. Robin shares how Serafina began as a single sketch of a cool, sassy beach cat with big goggles and a stuffed bunny named Noodles. The character existed before there was any story or even a name. During a critique group meeting, Robin showed the drawing to Matthew and asked how writers come up with stories. Pressed to give a real example, Matthew spontaneously suggested a cat who is deathly afraid of water but forced into swim lessons. Robin chuckled—and that reaction convinced Matthew there was something special there. From that moment, they began improvising the story together, volleying ideas back and forth. They talk about the unusual nature of their collaboration: in traditional publishing, authors and illustrators often never even meet. Here, the illustration sparked the story, and the two creators stayed in close conversation, refining both text and art so Serafina's voice, attitude, and emotional journey truly matched Robin's visual vision. Both Matthew and Robin reflect on their hopes that this book will help kids see their own confidence, bravery, and big feelings reflected on the page. Later in the show, Jed also chats briefly with Cedella Marley about her picture book Marley and the Family Band, inspired by her own childhood move from Jamaica to Delaware and her father Bob Marley's musical legacy of unity, joy, and resilience.

Sometimes their schedules line up and they play as The O'Farrill Family Band. Send us a textAnnie stops by the show to discuss music, how Loki's Folly came together, anxiety, new music and more.******‘Retribution' is a song looking at the parallels of extreme sides of emotions and how we react to difficult things,” says Annie Kuchenmeister, guitarist and singer for Loki's Folly, the Minneapolis-based indie-punk trio made up of sisters Annie (24), Nissa (19) and their brother Oskar (15). “The verses are an exploration of defensive and protective anger - wanting to hurt those who hurt you. While there's gratification and justification to seeking retribution, the chorus creates a vulnerable opposition to these harsher feelings. It's really about just not wanting to be alone forever and wanting to be cared for after being hurt.”   At its core, “Retribution” channels raw emotional honesty through the band's trademark blend of kinetic guitar work, cathartic drumming, and melodic grit - a sonic space where fury meets tenderness head-on. “This song came out of a lot of feelings of frustration and anger,” Annie continues. “Dealing with those big emotions can be hard, and I really didn't want to be consumed by them. So, this song became a way to lay everything bare - the good and the bad - and explore it all honestly. The music and lyrics really came together as a unit; as the melody came about, an old lyric idea immediately clicked.”Following on the heels of their September 2025 single (“King of All Alone”),” “Retribution” continues Loki's Folly's evolution toward deeper, more introspective songwriting. This reflective thread connects “King of All Alone” and “Retribution,” both songs were produced by Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum and born from turbulent emotional spaces that transform struggle into strength. Where “King of All Alone” aches with longing and cautious optimism, “Retribution” pushes back with defiant honesty - together forming a striking one-two punch from a band unafraid to confront both the chaos and the catharsis of modern life.  Formed in South Minneapolis, Loki's Folly began as a project between sisters Annie and Nissa, later joined by their younger brother Oskar on bass. Their bond - both familial and creative - gives their music a distinct urgency, weaving together themes of identity, isolation, neurodivergence, and resilience. On their debut Sisu, the band worked with legendary producers Ryan Smith (of Soul Asylum), Ed Ackerson (The Replacements, The Jayhawks), Kevin Bowe (Etta James, Jonny Lang), and John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Andrew W.K.), crafting a record that explored the complexities of adolescence and the emotional weight of finding one's voice in an uncertain world. While Sisu introduced listeners to their youthful defiance and eclectic spirit, “Retribution” feels like a step into something more introspective - a song that acknowledges the anger beneath the surface, but also the fragile hope that lingers within it. It's a return trip down the Media Path for Vicki and John and this time Bob is along for fun, games and Cowsill family lore! We welcome back Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who recently joined us to talk about their collaboration on a new album of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill, 'Long After the Fire', plus fellow founding Cowsills member, Bob Cowsill joins the conversation.We start at the dawn of Vicki's Cowsills journey, as a fan who became a friend who became a spouse. A seven-year-old, Vicki's big sister Debbi said, “You know, there's a girl your age in this band.” Vicki was instantly sold and she spent her allowance savings on the We Can Fly album. In 1977, when Vicki learned that a friend of a friend knew Bob's Cowsill, Vicki gave him a call to talk vocal harmonies. Vicki and Debbi were still bubbling under as The Bangs and they went to see The Cowsills perform at a local club. The siblings' father, Frank Maxwell, was an Omaha music legend who played guitar in the band Fifth of May in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No doubt, the apples didn't fall far from the tree. They're a band made up of two brothers and a sister from Sioux Falls.  Their father was a well-known musician in Omaha, but he died a few years ago.  Since they were a very musical family, the kids decided to do a band as a tribute to their dad...  The name "Shurr Jr." is a takeoff on one of their dad's favorite sayings, "Sure, Junior" as a replacement for "Yep, okay."The name of the EP is also a nod to their father, too... They tell their tale of how they moved from Australia to the United States in 2019, and quickly made an impact on the Nashville music scene through their shutdown era livestreams, and their more recent appearances on the Grand Ole Opry. Gear wise, Stuie shows us his modified Jason Isbell Tele and Gretsch, while Sonny shows off his Gibson Les Paul Special, and vintage Fender Coronado.

The Cowsills evoke a certain time and place, but, as artists, they've continued to grow and develop their voices. And, when they decided to make a record together in the early 90's, they knew it would be the next step in their evolution. However, it didn't exactly work out that way. Mariam sits down with Raymond McLain and Ruth McLain Smith ahead of the McLain Family Band's induction into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. They talk about their beginnings as a band in 1968 on television in Hazard, Kentucky and their musical childhoods. They toured extensively throughout the 1970s and 1980s in 64 countries through Africa, Europe and Asia. Raymond and Ruth reflect on their career so far, and the joy music has brought to their lives.  Their father, Raymond McLain, Sr., was a professor of music at Berea College, and later in his career became a librarian at Lexington Public Library, working in children's and then in the Kentucky Room. He retired in the 1990s. Ruth and Raymond perform a song their father wrote, Kentucky Wind, for us on the podcast.

Rather than flying into each city, the musicians traveled by chartered Canadian National Railwaystrain, in a total of 14 cars (two engines, one diner, five sleepers, two lounge cars, two flat cars, one baggage car, and one staff car).[5] The train journey between cities ultimately became a combination of non-stop jam sessions and partying fueled by alcohol. Raized Wrong is two young brothers, Landon and Lyric Goldberg, and their father Donny. They are a newly minted but third generation family band.
