The Acadiana Center for the Arts' Sam Oliver, Executive director, and Taylor Davis, Board President, join Discover Lafayette to discuss the AcA's 50th anniversary approaching, the superb programming they offer our community, and discuss upcoming events. The Acadiana Arts Council, the organization that later evolved into the Acadiana Center for the Arts (AcA), was established in 1975. It began as a regional arts organization focused on promoting and supporting the arts throughout Acadiana. Over the years, the Council expanded its vision and programming, eventually leading to the creation of the AcA as its permanent home on November 1, 2010. The AcA, at its core, is the Arts Council for the region, that offers Lafayette and the Acadiana region something you would expect in a larger metropolitan area: incredible performances from all over the world, high production quality shows, and the promotion of local and regional artists. It is a space for visual arts, performing arts, music, dance, and theatre. It is also a gathering place for social events, debates and forums for political occasions, and civic presentations that benefit the entire community. Sam has served as Executive Director for six years. You can hear our original interview with Sam here where we discussed his educational background and what led him to serve the AcA. Taylor has served on the board the past ten years and was first exposed to the AcA at its first show ever which brought Lyle Lovett to Lafayette. Taylor says his service is "a labor of love," and he and his wife, Yvette regularly go out to see and enjoy live music. The James Devin Moncus Theater offers a superb sound system that was upgraded this year, with a seating capacity of 304 seats, "and there is really not a bad seat in the house!" It's a great time to join or renew your AcA membership as you receive early bird access to tickets for 2025's in-demand performances before they open for sale to the general public. Yearly memberships begin at $35 a year with higher levels for those who want to support the organization at a higher level. The AcA's 2025's Louisiana Crossroads series will showcase performers such as Steve Khan, Louis Michot, and C.J. Chenier celebrating the 100th birthday of Clifton Chenier. Scott Mulvahill, a Nashville based singer, songwriter and bass player, will be leading a full album length playthrough of Paul Simon's Graceland album, which featured Acadiana artists with Zydeco and accordion music. George Porter Jr. will round out the year. January 2025 will be kicked off with a two-night concert “The Roots of Fire Live,” bringing local Cajun and Creole together live on stage to perform, Other big name acts will include Lucinda Williams, Andrew Duhon, Ruthie Foster, and Kat Higgins, Several perks are being offered to enhance your AcA experience. Parking is always a challenge downtown, so the AcA is introducing free parking with a ticket at the parking lot across from Chase Tower on Jefferson Street. If you're planning dinner and drinks after a show, the AcA has partnered with downtown restaurants such as Vestal and Pop's Poboys who are doing pre-show discounts on meals. The Aca has also partnered with restaurants such as Pamplona and Ton's Downtown who will stay open later on show nights to offer post-show cocktails, In order to ensure a lineup of performances which pleases its patrons, the AcA put out a survey asking for the types of acts desired by the community. Putting together a 50th anniversary season “had to be not just good, but something that our audience and our supporters really resonate with. We actually put out a survey where we said to members of ACA, tell us what you want to see”, Sam Oliver said. In honor of the upcoming 50th anniversary of AcA, on December 7, 2024, the Pelican Ball will honor five people who have made an impact over the course of its existence. One of the founders of the Acadiana Center for the Arts,

The milestone tenth studio album from folk-blues luminary Ruthie Foster, Mileage finds the singer-songwriter reflecting on a life that's been full of professional triumphs, courtesy of a musical journey that took a self-described “little Black girl with a guitar” from singing at churches in rural Texas to chalking up multiple Grammy nominations. With this album in particular, Ruthie shares a collection of songs that was inspired by heartfelt conversations with producer Tyler Bryant and Rebecca Lovell, Bryant's wife and one-half of the duo Larkin Poe. In that regard, Mileage was borne from a unique and very personal experience, one that found the music emerging organically and in ways that were both real and illuminating. The result is an album flush with creative synergy and symmetry, a snapshot of a career well spent.Consequently, Mileage also marks for a profound collaboration with the legendary Sun Records, one that allows Ruthie's narrative to intertwine with the legendary label's rich tapestry of musical history courtesy of a soul-stirring journey through America's musical heartland. In that regard, it's more than merely an album — rather, it's an invitation to take part in a conversation about memories, emotions, and shared humanity. Speaking with Lee and Billy, Ruthie describes the ways in which she was able to dig deep into her own life story and bring to life her dreams, desires and aspirations. With both verve and vulnerability, she shares her story. No matter whether she's singing blues, gospel, R&B, or rock and roll, on records or in conversation, Ruthie Foster makes it an honor to simply be in her presence. Mitch Woods and his Rocket 88's have been playing their unique brand of “rock a boogie” for some 40 years now. Back in 2017, Woods issued a career-defining album, Friends Along the Way, featuring a stellar lineup of guests, including Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, Ruthie Foster, Maria Muldaur, Elvin Bishop and many others. Problem was, his record label at the time had just decided to focus only on videos, leaving this great album without an audience. Now, he's regained the master recordings and has reissued the album and added five bonus tracks. He and his Rocket 88's are out on the road promoting the reissue. We chat with Woods about how the project got rolling with a "yes" from Van Morrison, plus how he took up residency at the piano bar during the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise
The career of Scottie Miller is one that cannot be confined...the Minneapolis, Minnesota native is a three-time inductee of the state's Blues Hall of Fame. He has toured the world with a long list of famous artists, including the likes of Bo Diddley, and currently with multiple Grammy nominee Ruthie Foster. His songs have been recorded by Foster and the Blind Boys of Alabama. In addition, Miller has recorded nearly a dozen albums of his own music, largely self-produced. "Carnival Cocoon" started as a collection of poems Miller wrote throughout his career; out of more than a hundred ideas, he chose the best, and put 23 of these to music. The collection is the subject of this edition of the Brown Posey Press Show. Miller discusses his upbringing, and the encouragement and inspiration music gave him in this program. He attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where matriculation ended when the money did the same. Miller also has stories to tell about those he has performed and written with, audiences in different places and his unique, ongoing journey. His book, music, and history can be found at scottiemiller.com.

Award-winning singer-songwriter Ruthie Foster has a voice unlike any other. Her unique style of blending blues, gospel, soul and American roots has inspired many music lovers across the globe. A native of Central Texas, Foster grew up around gospel singers and knew instantly of her passion for music – from singing in rural Texas churches to performing in the military with the Navy Band. But she was also aware of her surroundings, as she navigated around a discriminatory Deep South. Join us as host Eddie Robinson chats unguarded with Texas Music Hall of Famer, Ruthie Foster. She shares intimate stories about her devotion to family and how the coronavirus pandemic almost pushed her away from recording music permanently. Plus, the multiple Grammy-nominated artist reveals a very traumatic incident that happened to her as a child on her way to take piano lessons – a moment that would change her life forever.
On Friday's show: The Supreme Court issued a surprise decision striking down Alabama's Congressional maps for minimizing Black voters' influence to one district. Could there be implications for Texas? We talk it over with Charles “Rocky” Rhodes, a law professor at South Texas College of Law Houston. Also this hour: Celebrated classical pianist Amy Yang performs June 20 at the Texas Music Festival on the University of Houston campus. It's a homecoming, of sorts, for her. We find out why and what it has to do with the music she'll play. Then, from recent security breaches at Bush Airport, to Houston being home to another James Beard Award-winning chef, we ask this week's “non-expert panel” to contemplate The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And Texas blues singer Ruthie Foster talks about her life and career in an excerpt from this week's encore edition of I See U with Eddie Robinson.

This weekend's weather forecast promises record heat, but in local news, Nevada Irrigation District warns that despite the rising temperatures, it's not the time to go for a swim in your neighborhood river or lake. KVMR's Felton Pruitt talks with Ruthie Foster who performs as part of the New Songs Festival. She brings a little bit of gospel, blues, jazz, folk, and soul with her to the Center for The Arts in downtown Grass Valley on Saturday, April 29th. From the California Report: in the wake of the eye-popping $787 million dollar Fox News defamation settlement with Dominion Voting Systems, a group of concerned Shasta County citizens is taking action. They're spearheading the charge to recall Kevin Crye, one of the county supervisors who pedaled conspiracy theories about Dominion, ultimately leading Shasta County to terminate its contract with the voting system.
Ruthie Foster will be participating in The Center For The Arts' New Songs Fest, a four-day songwriting festival featuring three days of workshops, three evening concerts, multiple breakout and coaching sessions, studio space, a panel discussion, and a professional production on stage. Ruthie will be performing Saturday, April 29th, at 8:00 PM. KVMR's Felton Pruitt spoke with her about her upcoming gig, creative process, and her guitar named Pearl.
086 - Ruthie Foster The new episode of “Have Guitar Will Travel” has host James Patrick Regan speaking with Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/guitarist Ruthie Foster, who grew up performing gospel music in churches across her home state of Texas. The singer, guitarist, and songwriter Ruthie Foster recently released her ninth studio album, called Healing Time, and it is a rich musical stew with flavors from gospel, soul, folk, and of course, the blues. Growing up in Texas, Foster was surrounded by southern blues and gospel, and she also grooves toward Motown-influenced soul and R&B, as she continues to avoid categorization, despite having earned multiple Blues Awards. “You can't put me in a box, and I think that says a lot about not just who I am, but who we all are,” as she was quoted on Bluegrass Situation. She's also been an enthusiastic collaborator with the Allman Brothers, the Blind Boys of Alabama, pedal steel master Robert Randolph, and others. Ruthie Foster and her longtime bandmates play some of their feel-good and hopeful blues in-studio. Set list: "Healing Time", "Feels Like Freedom", "Phenomenal Woman" Watch "Healing Time": Watch "Feels Like Freedom": Watch "Phenomenal Woman":
On Thursday's show: Rumors continue to circulate that the Texas Education Agency will take over the Houston Independent School District in a matter of days. While those rumors remain unconfirmed, News 88.7 reporter Dominic Anthony Walsh joins us to discuss what we do and do not know. Also this hour: What happened to Houston's land trust? Back in 2018, the city set aside $60 million to help the nonprofit Houston Community Land Trust establish 1,100 affordable homes in five years. Now, five years later, the trust has created just 136. We discuss why it didn't work – at least not as intended. Then, the weather keeps getting warmer. Pollen is showing up on stationary objects. That means sneezing and itchy eyes can't be far behind. Allergist Dr. Dat Tran of Innovative Allergy answers listener questions. And Texas blues singer Ruthie Foster talks about her life and career in an excerpt from this week's edition of I See U with Eddie Robinson.

Originally from a small town: Gause, Texas, Ruthie Foster came from a family of gospel singers. Singing gospel music acted as a prime method of communication in her life strongly enough that it ended up being her career. Along the way, Ruthie studied audio engineering in college, which ended up giving her invaluable knowledge to support her artistic expression, especially as a woman in a male dominated field. She quit music for about a year and joined the Navy, wanting to do something other than music. In the Navy, stationed in San Diego, she worked around helicopters, giving her even more of a technical mindset. While in the Navy, she also learned how to be chill AF, thanks to her recruiting officer who led by example and taught Foster and fellow recruits how to relax in their work. One aspect of Ruthie's story that blows my mind is her time in New York City. In the post-Tracy Chapman era, she was swept up and signed by a major label looking for the next Chapman carbon copy. During her years with Atlantic, Ruthie took the time to learn how to be a songwriter and performer, while never recording a single thing. It was a genius move and gave her an invaluable education for a young musician! She moved back to Texas to be with her ailing mother to spend the remaining years of her life together. Ruthie Foster is an impressive artist and person who has learned the lesson of where to be and when to be there. Of her new album Healing Time, she says “There's always time for healing, if you give it time.” Enjoy!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
