On Thursday's show: Despite federal and state regulations, hospitals in Texas are failing to provide real transparency in pricing for medical services they provide. We discuss a new report from health economist Vivian Ho.And we remember our colleague, longtime Texas radio newsman Matt Thomas, who died on Wednesday after a brief illness. Also this hour: We talk about efforts to deal with what's known as the “corridor of cruelty,” an area in Houston that has become a dumping ground for abandoned stray dogs and cats. Then, with Cinco de Mayo coming up next week, we revisit a 2024 conversation about how many holidays get co-opted, and how we can turn cultural appropriation into appreciation. (But also drink. And sell mattresses). And Kenny Wayne Shepherd became a star blues guitarist as a teenager, drawing comparisons to another three-named performer, the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughn. We learn why Shepherd's choice to go by three names had nothing to do with emulating Vaughn and discuss the lessons he's learned from touring with another blues legend, 91-year-old Bobby Rush ahead of their Sunday concert at House of Blues.

I had a chance to talk with Kenny Wayne Shepherd about his upcoming 2025 Tour with Experience Hendrix, a fresh album with blues legend Bobby Rush, and the 30th anniversary of his breakout record, Ledbetter Heights. Oh, and let’s not forget his obsession with muscle cars. The Experience Hendrix Tour: A Shredder’s Dream KWS is heading back to Detroit on March 22nd for the Experience Hendrix show at the legendary Fox Theatre. If you’ve never been to one of these gigs, imagine the ultimate guitar jam session with an all-star lineup paying tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Kenny is stoked to be part of it once again. “The Fox Theatres are some of the most beautiful venues in the country, and the Detroit one is probably the pinnacle,” Kenny said. “It’s crazy to think a lot of them were originally movie theaters.” He also talked about the wild mix of players sharing the stage, from shredders like Zakk Wylde to the precision of Eric Johnson. “Eric Johnson literally plays a backwards Hendrix solo note for note,” Kenny said. “That’s next-level dedication.” Kenny Wayne Shepherd Family, Touring, and Finding Balance Kenny isn’t just juggling a tour—he’s also balancing life at home with six kids. “When we first had kids, I tried to be home as much as possible, just doing weekend shows. But eventually, I had to hit the road again,” he explained. “Now, we’ve got a system. Four to five weeks on tour is the max before I need to come back and reconnect.” And when he’s home? It’s all about family, muscle cars, and stepping away from the music business for a bit. 30 Years of Ledbetter Heights and a New Record with Bobby Rush This year marks three decades since Ledbetter Heights put KWS on the map. To celebrate, he’s re-recorded the album, but don’t expect an exact replica. “With Trouble Is…, we recreated it almost exactly. But for Ledbetter Heights, some of the original musicians have passed away, so we took some creative liberties,” Kenny said. “It’s going to be a fresh experience for fans.” He’s also dropping Young Fashioned Ways on March 21st, a pure blues record with 92-year-old Bobby Rush. “We had to wait until our schedules aligned, but now we can finally tour together,” Kenny said. “This album is special—it’s stripped-down blues mixed with full-band electric, and it’s raw.” Muscle Cars, Roadkill Nights, and the Dream Cruise If you know Kenny, you know his love for muscle cars is right up there with blues guitar. He’s got about 16 cars in his collection, though he admits he’s no Jay Leno. “Jay’s got two airplane hangars full of cars—it’s like a museum,” Kenny laughed. “I’m living my version of the dream, but that guy’s on another level.” And speaking of car events, he’s working on making it to Dodge’s Roadkill Nights this summer in Detroit. “I’ve never made it out to the Dream Cruise or Roadkill Nights, but I’ve been talking to the Dodge guys,” Kenny said. “Fingers crossed I can make it happen.” Talking Marriage Advice and Meeting Mel Gibson Kenny also shared some personal moments, including advice from his father-in-law—yes, that Mel Gibson—before marrying his wife, Hannah. “He told me, ‘Try not to go to bed angry,’” Kenny said. “It’s great advice, and we try to follow it as much as we can.” As for meeting Mel for the first time? “I grew up around famous people because of my dad’s radio background, so I wasn’t intimidated,” Kenny explained. “But yeah, some people would probably find it overwhelming.” Final Thoughts From Kenny Wayne Shepherd From killer guitar work to burning rubber on the streets, Kenny Wayne Shepherd has a packed year ahead. Between the Experience Hendrix tour, the Ledbetter Heights re-recording, and his new blues project with Bobby Rush, there’s a lot to look forward to. And who knows? Maybe we’ll see him tearing it up at Roadkill Nights this summer.
We are back with our good friend Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Since the last time we interviewed Kenny, he has released a follow up album to "Dirt On My Diamonds, Vol 1" iornically titled, "Dirt On My Diamonds, Vol 2". In addition to the new album, we talk about Kenny's experience actually playing Jimi Hendrix's "Woodstock" guitar and his upcoming tour, plus 2 new albums set to release in 2025. Kenny is a five-time-Grammy-nominated guitarist. The new album was recorded at the Legendary Fame Stuios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This project chronicles Shepherd's journey of musical evolution, touching on stories of loss, redemption, and memorable melodies. All crafted by an elite team of songwriters. Born in Louisiana, in 1977, Shepherd's own life has never followed the script. Steeped in classic blues and rock 'n' roll from an early age by his dad - a respected Lousiana radio personality and promoter - Kenny soon reached for his first Fender stratocaster and found he didn't require lessons to make it cry and wail. Long before Warner Brothers subsidairy Giant Records offered a deal, Shepherd had toured in clubs which he was too young to drink in. Please also check out our precious KWS interview released: October 7, 2023.

1- After engaging in a discussion with some individuals on the left about a topic we actually agreed on, I found that they assumed I was evading the issue because they labeled me as a "racist" It became clear that if you don't fully align with the left's views 100% of the time, they will still likely brand you as a racist or Nazi. Surprisingly, even a minor 1% disagreement can provoke the same level of disdain as a 99% disagreement. This is why you should always be 100% authentic to yourself!! 2- One of the deadliest streets in all of Jackson (Ellis Avenue) is undergoing a name change to honor a true Mississippi blues music icon and a living legend in Bobby Rush. The only thing I hate about this is the fact that every time there's a murder or robbery on that street that it's going to have Mr. Rush's name attached to it. 3-Pride month is only two days away, the damn holding back the Rainbow Supremacist is about to burst and they're upset that people know it's been a grift and a modern day race hustle and are no longer placating to their demands. 4- Jackson Public schools is getting some new school busses, but they're only for black and brown students according to the head of the EPA 5- The Democrat double standard is alive and well as the liberal media is demanding SCOTUS Samuel Alito recuse himself from all January 6th related cases over his wife flying an upside down American flag from their home after Joe Biden's 2020 election "victory" over Donald J. Trump. Meanwhile they're silent on the judge in Trump's hush money trial being 100% conflicted but refusing to recuse himself. 6- Susan Talamantes walks away from the Democrat party in California after 12 years!! “I'm done. I'm done with us protecting people who would buy and abuse our children.” “I don't want people buying little girls anymore. And I'm tired of saying it's okay and that we have to protect the men who do it.”

“I don't believe I'm going to die slipping on a piece of ice. I don't believe I'm going to die because I got a bad heart…I believe that I will be able to die as a revolutionary in the international revolutionary proletarian struggle.” - Fred Hampton, 1969 Fred Hampton became the Chairman of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party when he was just years out of high school. His oratory talent and intellectual grasp on leftist literature quickly shot him to stardom in activist circles. But, his leadership did not last long. In 1969, when he was just 21 years old, he was assassinated during a raid on his home orchestrated by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, the Chicago Police Department and the FBI. “He knew the power and potential of Fred Hampton,” former Congressman Bobby Rush said of the FBI Director at the time. “So I'm telling you, the man was nothing but greatness.” Today, in a special Black History Month episode of Making, in collaboration with The Rundown podcast, we tell the story of iconic Chicago liberation activist, Fred Hampton. Our hosts Brandon Pope and Erin Allen sat down with original members of the Black Panther Party, attorneys who fought his post-assassination lawsuits in the 1960s and family members who carry on his legacy. Making tells the story of a different, iconic figure every episode. Subscribe now.

Bobby Rush is in the Blues Hall of Fame, and he's won three Grammy awards. The first came when he was 83, the second four years later, and the third most recently this month. Now 90 years old, Bobby Rush still tours, dancing around the stage like a guy half – no, a quarter of his age, and not even COVID could stop him from writing and recording his latest album, called All My Love For You. Bobby Rush demonstrates how he put the funk into the blues, recounts what it was like enduring within the music business (he owns all his own publishing), and tells tales while playing the blues, in-studio. -Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Quarto Valley Records proudly announces the new album “Heavenly Cream: An Acoustic Tribute to Cream.” The album takes us on a magical journey -- traveling the brief course of the iconic band's musical life -- back to the raw, stripped-down magic of the creativity of Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton, and Pete Brown. Passionately produced and mixed by Rob Cass, the new album will be released via Quarto Valley Records on November 3rd on vinyl, CD and digitally on all platforms. Malcolm Bruce, Jack's son, who, as a musician of note, was involved in the making of the album. Formed in 1966, CREAM quickly became known for their explosive impromptu style – high-volume blues jamming, extended solos and flashy instrumental showmanship. The project honors CREAM's legacy with a 15-track tribute album and features Pete Brown and Ginger Baker plus an impressive roster of renowned musicians who knew, or were inspired by the iconic supergroup including Joe Bonamassa, Deborah Bonham, Malcolm Bruce, Peter Bullick, Nathan James, Bernie Marsden, Maggie Bell, Rob Cass, Clem Clempson, Paul Rodgers and Bobby Rush. There were also invaluable musical contributions from Cheryl Alleyne, Winston Blissett, Moreno Buttinar, Abass Dodoo, John Donaldson, Pee Wee Ellis, Mo Foster, Neil Murray, Mo Nazam, Tony Remy, and Frank Tontoh. The first single off the album, “Sunshine of Your Love,” was released on September 1 and features Ginger Baker on drums, Joe Bonamassa on vocals and guitar, Malcom Bruce on piano and the late Bernie Marsden on vocals and guitar, with Neil Murray on bass and Abass Dodoo on percussion. This iconic song, co-written by Jack Bruce and Pete Brown was included on Cream's best-selling second album Disraeli Gears in November 1967 and became one of Cream's fan favorites. “Heavenly Cream: An Acoustic Tribute to Cream” was recorded at Sensible Music and the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. Years in the making, Quarto Valley Records' executive Mike Carden initially approached Pete Brown, his long-time colleague and friend, in 2017 about a different project and out of that meeting came the concept of doing a recording -- a retrospective of CREAM music -- which both Pete and Mike mutually agreed to. Pete had remained friends with Ginger Baker over the years and brought him on board. Following suit came Malcom Bruce (Jack's son), and the gathering of the incredible talent on the album began to fall into place. On recording this album, Malcom Bruce said, “I feel very much that in my own small way I'm carrying on a tradition that's incredibly unique in the musical canon as it were.” ALBUM TRACK LISTING 1. Bobby Rush grew up in the cotton fields of Louisiana, going on to play the blues alongside the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and B.B. King. Despite writing big hits like “Chicken Heads” and putting out music for decades, he only got his first Grammy at age 83. Now, at 89, Bobby is back with a new record, “All My Love For You.” He tells Tom about growing up in the South during segregation, playing alongside some of the greatest blues players of all time, and how it felt to finally win a Grammy in his 80s.
