Did the NYPD prove that Brushy Bill Roberts was Billy the Kid using forensic technology? Short answer: no. Not the NYPD, not the FBI, not the CIA, and not Interpol. No official agency has ever conducted a forensic photo comparison or any kind of investigation into whether Brushy Bill Roberts was Billy the Kid. So where does the claim come from? Most of the time, it traces back to the documentary "Billy the Kid: The Silver City Photo," produced by Dan Edwards, and featuring an NYPD detective named Michael Furia. That's what we'll be discussing today, taking a look at what Detective Furia actually did, what he did not do, and why a confident opinion about an old photograph is not the same thing as a forensic identification. Along the way, we get into why facial recognition software doesn't work on 19th-century tintypes, what the NYPD's own policy says about photo matches (spoiler: a match is only an investigative lead), and how a tool like Civil War Photo Sleuth really operates. We also identify one of the six photographs for who it actually is, a Rough Rider named William Dibrell Wood, a real and well-documented man who was most definitely NOT Brushy Bill Roberts. Dust off your spurs and holster your revolvers, because this week Beans and Gaz are heading back to 1881. The boys are joined by a very special guest, Jeremiah Slatten of the Billy the Kid Historical Coalition, to separate the man from the myth and the history from the Hollywood sizzle.Whether you know him as Henry McCarty, William H. Bonney, or just the fastest gun in Lincoln County, Billy the Kid remains the ultimate enigma of the American West. But how much of what we "know" is just smoke and mirrors?Hollywood vs. History: We put the cult classic Young Guns films under the microscope. Jeremiah breaks down what the movies got right (the chaos of the Lincoln County War) and what they got wildly wrong (spoiler: the "pewter" scene didn't quite happen that way). The Man Behind the Iron: Who was Billy, really? We dive into his early life, his surprising literacy, and his reputation as a charismatic, bilingual social butterfly rather than a cold-blooded sociopath.Living on the Edge: What was daily life actually like in the 1870s New Mexico Territory? From the grit of the cattle trails to the tension of a territory governed by "The House," we discuss the brutal reality of frontier survival. The Relics and the Receipts: With "lost" photos and "authentic" knives popping up at auctions every year, Jeremiah discusses the rigorous provenance required to prove an artifact actually belonged to the Kid.The Brushy Bill Controversy: We tackle the legend of Brushy Bill Roberts head-on. Was the Kid really killed by Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, or did he live to be an old man in Hico, Texas? The Trail of the Kid: Looking for a road trip? Jeremiah lists the essential historical sites you can visit today to walk in Billy's footsteps, from the Lincoln County Courthouse to the quiet grave site in Fort Sumner.Jeremiah explains the vital work of the Billy the Kid Historical Coalition, an organization dedicated to preserving the true history of the Lincoln County War and protecting the legacy of the Regulators from being buried by time and tall tales. And finally, the guys get personal. Beans and Gaz finally pin Jeremiah down to find out the truth behind the legend: just where exactly is that Regulator tattoo hidden?Check out the Billy the Kid historical website Billy The Kid | BTKCoalitionCheck out Chasing Billy on Youtube(81) Chasing Billy - YouTubetallboyradio.com

Rennie and I are back another episode or KILL OR BE KILLED, our exploration of the bleak, brutal movies of the 70' and 80's. The seminal masterpiece PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID, directed by Sam Peckinpah, in prime form, is our subject this time around. There are a multitude of cuts available that have been released over the years so, for the record, we will be used the 1988 Turner Preview Cut for basis. This, 122 minute version is an attempt to combine the theatrical release and some “new” scenes that we edited out of the theatrical version and is widely considered closer to Sam Peckinpah's intent. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Knocking on Heaven's Door” – Bob Dylan

Send a textEpisode 251Out on the edge of a young and restless nation, where dust clung to boots and gun smoke drifted across wide New Mexico skies, a boy with a narrow face and watchful eyes began to write his name into legend. He was not born an outlaw. He was born Henry McCarty — a sickly child in a hard, uncertain world. Before the wanted posters, before the headlines, before the nickname that would echo through saloons and sheriff's offices alike, there was simply a boy trying to survive in the shifting sands of the American frontier. This is a story shaped by hunger and ambition, by loyalty and betrayal, by a territory still deciding what justice meant. It is a story of cattle barons and corrupt lawmen, of teenage bravado and fatal miscalculation. And at its heart stands a young man caught between myth and reality — charming to some, dangerous to others, and forever frozen at twenty-one.History remembers him as Billy the Kid.But before the legend hardened into folklore — before the Lincoln County War, before the jailbreak, before the final midnight knock — there was only a boy on the run, racing across an unforgiving landscape that would make him famous, and then make him dead. This is his short history.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com
Should Billy the Kid's body be exhumed? In today's episode, we break down the evidence surrounding Billy's death at Fort Sumner, as well as the two failed attempts to dig up the Kid: the 1961 court fight between Lincoln and Fort Sumner, and the 2003 official investigation led by Sheriff Tom Sullivan, Deputy Steve Sederwall, and Sheriff Gary Graves. Finally, we address the DNA question itself and what evidence actually justifies disturbing the dead.

For generations, rumors have swirled that Old West outlaw Billy the Kid's grave at Fort Sumner was swept away by a massive flood. But is there any truth to the legend, or does Billy still rest beneath his famous gravestone? Also discussed are fellow Lincoln County Regulators Charlie Bowdre and Tom Folliard. Was José Chavez y Chavez really part Navajo? And what about Billy the Kid's famous escape from Lincoln? Was that Young Guns 2 scene with the pistol in the outhouse true, or did he overpower his guard? Who actually killed Deputy Carlyle at White Oaks? These are just a few of the questions I discussed with historian and author James B. Mills. His book, Billy the Kid: Bandido Simpatico, is one of the most definitive biographies on William H. Bonney, and his new release, In the Days of Billy the Kid, explores the lives of Chavez y Chavez, Juan Patron, Yginio Salazar, and the underrated Martin Chavez. We cover everything from the Society of Bandits to the Battle of Lincoln, whether Billy and Jesse James ever met, John Chisum, and even the White Caps uprising. This week, we head back to the 1800's to meet the man who would become known as Billy the Kid! Born Henry McCarty in New York City, he eventually went west with his Mother and brother with stops in Indiana and Wichita before landing in Silver City New Mexico. His mom died when he was just 14 and his stepdad abandoned him to head to California to start mining. Henry's first criminal act was to steal food for which he served ten days in jail. Later he went on to become a horse thief and a Regulator and fought in a conflict called the Lincoln County War. He killed a corrupt Sheriff and his deputy and became fodder for tales of the Wild West and Newspapers, building a legend as a killer that it's possible he didn't earn. We talk about his life, his death and the mysteries and surprises he left behind, including a possible survival under the name 'Brushy' Bill Cody! All this and Arthur talks school and the Finch App and Laura and Dean discuss whether or not Jon Bon Jovi qualifies as butt rock in this special Young Guns episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.
Did Pat Garrett's widow really claim that her husband helped to fake the demise of Billy the Kid? What about Garrett's daughter, Elizabeth? Did she really give an interview in the 1980s saying the same thing? Endless online debates and unreliable sources have fueled questions such as these. But what does the historical evidence actually say? Today, we'll examine the affidavit of Homer Overton, the stories about Elizabeth Garrett, the primary sources, eyewitness testimony, and the coroner's inquest records. And hopefully, once and for all, put the rumors to rest. Lawmen often kept the firearms of the people the arrested. After the siege and arrest of Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett kept a Winchester rifle and Colt revolver that belonged to Billy Wilson. Garrett used that pistol to shoot Billy the Kid in a darkened room in 1881. In 2021 the Colt revolver sold at auction of over 6 million dollars. Learn more about your ad choices.
