Lindsay Bryan-Podvin is a financial therapist from Michigan who has grown her email list and her business by going against the grain of typical advice. Today Lindsay discusses how what she learned about email marketing from others, just wasn't a great fit for her business and even her personal and professional brand and what she is doing differently. Key Points From This Episode:As a therapist, email has worked well for Lindsay because her audience has a chance to really get to know her before they decide to work with her. Being a financial therapist is a very specific niche that forced Lindsay to get online, get social and start her email list. After an Instagram algorithm changed, she quickly realized that her email list was the way to go because she owned that list. Lindsay realized just how powerful her email list was after doing a 7-day email challenge and finding a surprising connection. She sought advice and was getting tips from gurus and found that she started sounding less and less, more like herself and my emails started looking more and more like everybody else's.Lindsay determined that the challenge is how to walk that line of getting help for your email so that you can actually come through as yourself. It has been incredibly liberating for her to do this and very fruitful.Tweetables:To me, bro-marketing is imagining that there is a one-size-fits-all and if it's not working for you, then you're the problem. @mindmnybalance. (00:40)At the start of my email list and then right now, that had been my 100% authentic voice. But in the middle point, when I was getting tips from gurus, I started sounding less and less, more like myself and my emails started looking more and more like everybody else's. @mindmnybalance. (07:54)The challenge is how to walk that line of getting help for your email so that you can actually come through as yourself. @mindmnybalance. (08:10) I realized that the more I sounded like other people, the less I sounded like myself, the more my email lists responded and they responded negatively by unsubscribing and not opening my emails. @mindmnybalance. (11:06)The liberation and freedom of fully showing up as myself has been a gift and that is when people respond. @mindmnybalance. (13:16)When you liberate yourself from this idea, that email has to be one way or business has to be one way or a website has to look one way you actually call in people who want your product or service more because they are also aligning with you. @mindmnybalance. While making her 2017 album 'The Project', Canadian country star Lindsay Ell was given an assignment by her producer, Sugarland's Kristian Bush. Take her favorite album - John Mayer's 'Continuum' - and re-recorded it front to back, playing every part herself. Today Lindsay takes us through the process of breaking down the album that has most inspired her, how she created her own version of the songs and what the process taught her as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer and fan. My Favorite Album is a podcast on the impact great music has on our lives. Each episode features a guest on their favorite album of all time - why they love it, their history with the album and how it's influenced them. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist, concert promoter and photographer. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins. Lindsay Lucas is the founder of Lean On Me Consultants based in Houston, Texas and helps event venue owners and creative entrepreneurs looking to launch venues build a successful and sustainable business in a crowded market. Over the past year, she has brought her clients over $1M in revenue.  About a year ago when wedding venues started becoming the next "it" business venture, Lindsay noticed that almost all of the venue owners had one of two backgrounds - they either inherited land and were trying to make a business of it, or the buzzing sound of our industry caught the attention of investors in the corporate world. The one thing they all had in common was that they were lost, treading water and praying a Google search would return the magic answer. Today Lindsay and I address the topic of  “Serving Before You Sell” and how to gain trust with future clients with the right approach.  For more information on Lindsay and her business check out her website at leanonmeconsultants.com or email her hello@leanonmeconsultants.com. IE 3: How to Build Your "Brain Box" for Listening on the IELTS Exam

Get more info here: http://allearsenglish.com/aee-ielts-listening-on-the-ielts-exam/   How do you build a “Brain Box” for the IELTS Listening Exam? Today Lindsay and Jessica talk about two strategies to make the listening part of the IELTS exam easier!     If you have a strategy or a system to approach the IELTS Listening Exam, you'll probably do better.  Your first step should be to listen to the introduction.  It will tell you who will be talking, and what they're talking about. Many people who take this exam skip the introduction because they think they don't need it.  This is a mistake, because the context will help you understand.  The “brain box” concept is that your brain puts topics in “boxes,” and accessing a specific box will put a conversation into context, and make it easier to comprehend.   After you've listened to the introduction, you will then have about ten seconds to read the questions before you hear them.  Use this time to circle the key words before they're read aloud.  Making note of these key words will prepare you to answer the question quickly.  Speed is important, because you don't want one question mix you up on the next one, and then the next one.   How do you plan to prepare for the listening portion of the IELTS exam? Tell us about it in the comments section below!

What should be your focus when learning English? How can you make the most of the time you invest in studying? Today Lindsay talks with Nick Vance about the 80/20 principle, and how it can improve your English conversations!   Taking IELTS? Get our free IELTS video training course now   Nick believes that 80% of the positive benefits of something come from 20% of the input.  In business, some customers are more valuable than others.  With friends, though you may have many, only a few are truly close. In learning English, most of the grammar mistakes a new learner makes are really the same mistake over and over.  Correcting these most common 20% of mistakes would eliminate 80% of all grammar mistakes.  The best way to identify these is by working with a teacher who can help point out your mistakes.   Are you looking for a professional, native English teacher online? Get a native English teacher online in seconds at italki.   Another way to work with the 80/20 principle is to prepare answers to the most common questions you might get from native English speakers.  This will help you comfortably get conversations started — which is probably 80% of the work! You might prepare answers to questions like: Where are you from? How long have you lived here? What do you do for a living?   Do you see the 80/20 principle working in your life? How so? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below!     How to book a lesson with Nick! Step 1: Go to our special italki link to get $10 USD off of your second lesson Step 2: After you have enrolled through the promo page to get your discount, search for NickVance in the teacher search bar   Nick Vance is originally from Kentucky and has lived in North Carolina, Washington DC, San Diego and Portland.  He has been living in Berlin, Germany for 2.5 years.  Nick’s degree is in math but he left that field when he realized how much he enjoyed helping others learn English.     Nick has been helping people improve their English for 4 years and have been teaching online via Italki for about one year.
