Ep #308 - A Wave of Peace - An Interview with Peace Messenger, David Wick What an amazing time in history we are experiencing.  I don't know about you guys but there are days I am unsure how to respond to all the chaos and unrest in the world and then on other days I am fascinated and so grateful for the people doing the hard work and bringing light to the world.  Here on Empowering Chats I get to meet and interview those people I call Light Leaders who are here to spread love, light and hope to everyone they meet. I am honored to welcome David Wick to Empowering Chats. David calls himself a messenger of peace. And he walks the talk. He serves on the Council of Directors for the non-profit organization, Pathways to Peace. They are an international Peace-building, educational and consulting organization whose main goal is to foster Peace-builders and Peace-building activities in order to create a Culture of Peace.  In this chat David and I dive into the significance of individual and collective peace-building, riding the PeaceWave and taking part in the Peace Movement through the "Peace everyday at Noon," practice. I believe we can never work too hard in bringing light and peace to our inner world and then shining out to the greater world. The work David and others are doing to this end is inspiring. The United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated every year on December 3rd. This year, the international community is also celebrating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions of 1949. The Geneva Conventions are cornerstones of international humanitarian law that came in the wake of World War II and the Holocaust, when hundreds of thousands of persons with disabilities were exterminated alongside Jewish people and other minorities. The Nuremberg tribunal found that the mass killing of persons with disabilities during World War II constituted a crime against humanity, and thus gave explicit recognition to persecution based on disability.

In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Mirela Sula. At the age of 16, Mirela found herself in her home country of Albania, engaged to be married. Not because of a teenage romance or a whirlwind courtship, but because of something much darker – the risk of being sold into prostitution. Upon accepting the proposal, Mirela made her fiancé promise that he would allow her to continue her studies. If he didn't, she vowed to disappear from his life. That promise was Mirela's lifeline. She was married by the age of 18, trading her freedom for safety. Mirela lived with a large family in a small village, where there was no money to even discuss. Her role was clear – to wash, to clean, and to serve the family. At the same time, she continued to pursue her education, gaining knowledge, and with that, came confidence and exposure to the world outside. As Mirela progressed in her studies, she began to understand the importance of financial independence and worked aggressively toward it. Mirela is a British journalist, author, and CEO and Founder of Global Woman Magazine and Global Woman Club. She is an internationally recognized leader in the fields of media, education, and women's empowerment. With a dynamic career spanning over two decades, Mirela has left a mark on the world by transformative initiatives and fostering a global community of over 30,000 female founders in her Global Woman platform. Jun 18, 2021 #ParamahansaYogananda #KriyaYoga #GuidedMeditation To commemorate the seventh United Nations International Day of Yoga, Self-Realization Fellowship presents “Yoga — Uniting Our World Family,” a special program of inspiration, guided meditation, and affirmation led by SRF nun Sister Draupadi. Sister Draupadi begins with a brief talk about the importance and benefits of meditation, which Paramahansa Yogananda said was the essential spiritual practice at the heart of yoga, the “science of the soul.” Then she conducts a 35-minute meditation, which includes application of Yogananda's methods of preparing body and mind to meditate, practice of one of his spiritual affirmations on the theme of peace, and periods of silence. The meditation concludes with a period of prayer for healing of all those in need. Paramahansa Yogananda was a key figure in the introduction of India's science of yoga to Westerners. The last in a line of divinely illumined gurus, Yogananda was charged with making available worldwide the ancient and sacred science of Kriya Yoga, which includes certain techniques of meditation whose devoted practice leads to direct, personal experience of God. Yogananda wrote, “Had India no other gift for the world, Kriya Yoga alone would suffice as a kingly offering.” To learn more about the Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons, the home-study course that Yogananda created to teach the science of meditation and the art of balanced spiritual living: https://yogananda.org/lessons Participate in other Day of Yoga guided meditations from SRF: German:    • Geleitete Meditation mit Bruder Nikhi...   Spanish:    • Meditación guiada con el Hermano Ekan...   Italian:    • Meditazione guidata con Brother Tyaga...   Portuguese:    • Meditação dirigida, por Irmã Bhavani ...   Enjoy more guided meditations from SRF (in English and other languages):    • Guided Meditations   Read the ebook of Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda: https://bookstore.yogananda-srf.org/p... In late 2019, I was asked to give a keynote and performance for the United Nations International Day of Peace at the Hostelling International in downtown Chicago. They asked if I could talk about the relationship between music and world peace. I responded, "Absolutely!" and got to work. For that event, I had to fill about 40 minutes with talking and any question and answer. Two years later, while visiting my wife, Megan Corse, in Los Angeles, I cut the "script" down to about 20 minutes. Then, the two of us went out to one of our favorite places, the Pacific Palisades in Santa Monica, and recorded me sharing the trimmed down speech. I added some of my music and stock video footage, and released the video. Here's my take on the relationship between music and peace. I hope it spurs some dialogue, some deep dives, and a nice pause to consider the depths of human connections across the planet. I decided to add this video, and its audio, to my limited podcast series, to round out the number of episodes and give something positive to follow my last couple episodes that were recorded during COVID lockdowns in the US and UK. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/philcircle/message

Weigh In.... ...What Does the International Day of Older Persons Mean to You? ...What are your beliefs about aging....About older people? ...Do You think we value and respect older adults in the US? ...How do you feel about growing older in our society? ...Do you think it's time that older adults receive dignity, respect, quality of life and quality of care? On December 4 1990 the United Nations General Assembly designated Oct 1st to be the International Day of Older Persons. The overarching theme for the United Nations International Day of Older Persons in 2022 is “Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World. In doing so, The United Nations is marking the International Day of Older Persons for encouraging countries to draw attention to and challenge negative stereotypes and misconceptions about older adults and aging, enabling older adults to continue their life's journey with purpose, quality of life, dignity and respect. According to the UN chief, Ending ageism and securing the rights of older persons is an ethical and practical imperative.. He urged the need to address this as a violation of human rights and called for greater legal guarantees of equality for older persons to prevent ageism from resulting in discriminatory policies, laws and treatment. Over 1 billion people, or approximately 15 percent of the world's population, have disabilities. While no global data exists regarding indigenous persons with disabilities, available statistics show that indigenous peoples are disproportionately likely to experience disability in comparison to the general population. Indigenous persons with disabilities often experience multiple forms of discrimination and face barriers to the full enjoyment of their rights, based on their indigenous status and also on disability. In Canada, around 22 percent of the population have disabilities and around 80 percent of us will have a disability at some point and, even if you don't identify as having one now, disability is the one minority you (or a loved one) can easily become a part of. Indigenous people are living with the continued results of this country's history and present with colonialism, discrimination and prejudice which continues to touch First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities yet today. This is one thing, but add disability to the mix and the barriers only pile on from there. The British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS) filled the need, in the 203 First Nations communities in British Columbia for more assistance and awareness. They've been addressing the needs of many on the unique barriers Indigenous peoples are up against in Canada and around the world by starting provincially. In 2015 with designating November as Indigenous Disability Awareness Month (IDAm) and they are making a difference and growing the reach of it all. This week on a stripped down Outlook with no theme music, we speak with BCAND's CEO, Neil Belanger about how they've gone from provincial, to bringing other provinces into the fold, and are even now hearing from other Indigenous communities in places like New Zealand and the Maori peoples. This organization serves Indigenous clients with disabilities at all ages, from students needing the technology to find success in education and employment to the financial needs around Registered Disability Savings Plans (RDSP's) and other things like housing. We speak with Belanger about how BCANDS got started, the kinds of supports they offer, and how they are leading the way with human rights for Indigenous people with disabilities by making connections with communities and fostering partnerships with those with disabilities and with allies alike because everyone has a role to play here, for a better reality in the current moment and into the future. Which additional provinces, cities, or people have stepped up and gotten involved? What is Jordan's Principle and how does it relate to what we're talking about on the show this week? How has the pandemic affected the Indigenous communities this organization serves? To learn more on all this and about things in this country, on this land, and how that expands into a greater movement around the world, check out this episode, in the glow of December 3, United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities. . The BCANDS celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2021 and they offer an individualized approach to the diversity of need that exists. Neil says "we're often so reactive rather than proactive and change must include us all". Indigenous peoples deal with so many things including around pipelines and the environment, residential schools, and lack of safe drinking water access and disability doesn't get enough attention, though it's intertwined with all these things, and this makes BCANDS an important resource doing necessary work. The United Nations International Day of People with Disability has a long esteemed history, celebrating understanding and acceptance of people with a disability around the world for almost three decades. It’s a day to honour the benefits of an inclusive and accessible society for all. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a key touchstone moment for disability rights, as it’s a historic and comprehensive legally binding international treaty that Australia was pivotal in developing. The CRPD as it’s become known, came into force in 2008. Today on the Gender Card, our guests examine how far we have come, and how much more there is to achieve for disability rights in Australia. Lawyer and marathon runner Henry McPhillamy brings insights from his own lived experience as a person who is blind to the panel. Eloise Hummell is a Research Fellow at The Hopkins Centre, at the Menzies Health Institute of Queensland, who is researching disability and rehabilitation, particularly how the National Disability Insurance Scheme is moving away from the key principles of the CRPD. Using all modes on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Friday 26th November 2021. We had yet another week with low solar activity. The solar flux index started the week at 79 and by Thursday had only climbed to 83. Ideally, we want the SFI to be above 100 to guarantee good 10m openings. Geomagnetically, the Sun has been quiet with a maximum Kp index of three. On Thursday it was at one for most of the day. Propquest says that the MUF over a 3,000km path has exceeded 28MHz at times, but was stuck below 24.9MHz on Thursday. As a result, 10m sounded very quiet indeed. This weekend is the CQWW CW contest, which is bound to generate some interest across the bands. Do take a look, especially on 21 and 28MHz, where we can expect some good DX at times, albeit somewhat fleetingly. NOAA has the SFI pegged between 82 and 85 next week as well. There are signs of a possible new sunspot building on the STEREO Ahead spacecraft imagery, but we will have to wait and see. The Kp index may rise to three this weekend, but next week looks quite settled with a Kp index of two forecast. There are coronal holes on the solar surface, but these are relatively small at the time of writing and look non-threatening. As always, things can change quite quickly so don't take out word for it. Keep an eye on solarham.com for updates and Propquest.co.uk for near real-time critical frequency figures. And now the VHF and up propagation news. The current unsettled spell of weather has curtailed any thoughts of Tropo for the period, which includes all of the coming week. This leaves rain scatter to discuss and these heavy showers, some wintry with hail or even thunder, may prove useful for the GHz bands. It is usually the case that showers can be quite vigorous early in the winter season, gaining their energy from the still relatively warm seas. This means that rain scatter paths will often involve showers running south or southeast over the North Sea or the Irish Sea, which online weather radars or lightning displays can locate easily. Other modes are available, such as meteor scatter or aurora and it's well worth finding a good activity-logging website that displays these exotic paths to be there when the propagation is present. Most of the November meteor showers are past their peak, with the exception of the small November Orionids, active from the 13th of November to the 6th of  December, peaking on the 28th of November.  The big Geminids meteor shower with a ZHR of 120+ is getting closer. It usually starts to build up from the beginning of December so watch out for improving meteor scatter conditions. Remember that the period around dawn is the best for random, ie non-shower, meteor scatter conditions. For EME enthusiasts, Moon declination is still positive until Tuesday and reaches perigee on Saturday. Expect shortening Moon windows and lower peak elevations, but decreasing path losses as the week progresses. Next Saturday morning the Moon and Sun are close in the sky so expect high sky temperatures due to Sun noise, with levels reaching over 3,000 Kelvin at 144MHz on Sunday.  And that's all from the propagation team this week

President Michael D. Higgins marked the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science with a special message for 11 February 2021. In his message, the President said that the International Day provides an appropriate occasion “to celebrate the contribution of women to the field of science, to acknowledge how important a contribution it is, and to highlight the ongoing need for action to ensure the voices of women and girls are heard more widely and at every level in the world of science.” Noting that, despite progress in recent years, a significant gender gap remains, the President highlighted a number of issues that affect women’s participation in science and technology, to be addressed urgently. In his message, President Higgins also addressed “every young girl who is wondering if a future in science is for her”, by highlighting the many positive female role models and telling aspiring female scientists to “carry your knowledge and skills with pride.” Throughout his term in office, President Higgins has drawn attention to the gender gap in the science and technology sector, saying society must do more to harness the creativity and innovation of all women and girls, by investing in inclusive STEM education and research, and structuring career paths in science and technology that do not exclude women and girls at any stage of their career. The President has also consistently argued that the benefits of research and scientific discoveries must be shared equitably and made available to poorer nations - a point the President reiterated throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, where access to vaccines to date has been very unevenly spread among countries.

We kick off Season Six of our #InterfaithMattersPodcast with a celebration of World Interfaith Harmony Week (Feb. 1-7) and the United Nations’ International Day of Human Fraternity (Feb. 4). In this episode, host AJ DeBonis and Rev. James Loughran, SA (Director of Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute) discuss Pope Francis’ remarkable 2020 Encyclical Fratelli Tutti (“Brothers and Sisters, All”) which calls for a new global “culture of encounter” across faith lines. In the words of Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb: “In the name of God … we declare the adoption of a culture of dialogue as the path; mutual cooperation as the code of conduct; reciprocal understanding as the method and standard.” Today’s podcast explores the implications of this vision for Roman Catholics, and indeed for all people of good will. We also invite you to help build this “culture of encounter” on Wednesday, February 3, when we present a panel of distinguished interfaith scholars and leaders discussing Pope Francis’ encyclical. The QSL Manager is Ros, 4Z5LA. Now the contest news Please remember to check before the contest for any new rules due to lockdown and social distancing, which may differ around the world. The RSGB strongly advises obeying your national and local government’s advice. This weekend it’s the CQ World Wide DX CW contest. The 48 hours run ends at 2359UTC today, the 29th. Activity is on the 1.8 to 28MHz contest bands. The exchange is signal report and your CQ Zone; for the UK that is Zone 14. As per tradition, December is a quiet month for contests, with no RSGB HF events at all. On Tuesday the 144MHz FM Activity Contest runs from 1900 to 1955UTC. It is followed by the all-mode 144MHz UK Activity Contest from 2000 to 2230UTC. Both have the exchange of signal report, serial number and locator. Next weekend, the ARRL 160m contest runs from 2200UTC on the 4th to 1600UTC on the 6th of December. It’s CW only and the exchange is signal report, with American and Canadian stations also sending their ARRL or RAC section abbreviation. Next Sunday, the 6th of December, the 144MHz AFS contest runs from 1000 to 1600UTC. The exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. The UK Six Metre Group Winter Marathon starts its two month run on the 1st of December. Just exchange a signal report and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA & G4BAO on Friday the 27th of November. Last week represented a good example of how solar cycle 25 is progressing. We started the week on the 22nd with a solar flux index, SFI, of 88 and a sunspot number of 35. Just to recap, that doesn’t mean there were 35 sunspots, as we count each sunspot group as 10 and each spot as one. But, by Thursday, the SFI was up to 104 with a sunspot number of 40, and there were three large groups visible on the Sun. As well as pushing up the SFI, the spots have been very active on the solar flare front, with daily B- and C-class flares being emitted, although their effects on the ionosphere have been minimal luckily. With the CW Worldwide CW contest occurring this weekend, this SFI does bode well for HF propagation. With zero coronal holes appearing, at least on Thursday, and the possibility that the SFI could rise even further in the coming days, this looks like a good combination for one of the best CQWWs we’ve seen for a few years. An SFI of more than 100 virtually guarantees some F2-layer propagation on 10 metres. These openings may be short-lived as the MUF drops a little, but it is definitely worth keeping an eye on 28MHz at times, especially near noon on North-South paths. If you are planning to take part, it is a good idea to plan your activities using a tool like predtest.uk. Typically, on the higher bands, such as 20, 15 and perhaps 10 metres, you will work stations to the east of the UK in the morning. As noon approaches, propagation will swing south. And the afternoon will be optimum for contacts with the USA. For 40 and 80 metres, the opposite is generally true, where you should be looking for a night-time path between you and the station you wish to work. Even if you hear this broadcast on Sunday it isn’t too late to take part, as the contest runs until midnight. Do get on as there is usually a lot of activity and it is a great opportunity to increase your country score. And now the VHF and up propagation news. The background weather pattern is again looking like high pressure will predominate, with a good prospect for Tropo. It will be a typical spell of November quiet weather with frost and fog overnight, perhaps lasting through the day in a few places. This prevalence for cool moist air near the surface makes for good Tropo since you will often find the high pressure has produced a layer of warmer and drier air above the inversion. It's the contrast that changes the refractive index of the air and can create ducts for VHF/UHF DX propagation. We should point out that some models allow the high to collapse in the second half of next week, so it's worth following the daily forecasts as we go through the week. Just one minor meteor shower this week. The Phoenicids peaks on the 2nd with a variable zenith hourly rate, but its radiant is not visible from the UK. The Moon reaches maximum declination on Wednesday, so we have long visibility windows all week with falling path losses. 144MHz sky noise is moderate to low all week, but rising up to 500 kelvin on Tuesday. And that’s all from the propagation team this week.

The majority of our conversation revolves the topic of suicide, as we both have a close relationship to it; my dad commit suicide when I was 10, and her mom has attempted - unsucessfully - 9 times. We talk about the shame and the stigma that can easily come with the reality of someone close to you having either died or been close to it. Her mother’s experience has given her great compassion to work with teenagers who are suicidal, and she knows the value of giving them a safe place to talk about their thoughts, emotions, and even intentions. In addition to her important work with teenage suicidality, Lindsay shares that her favorite tip in the book co-authored, The Ten Steps to Finding Happy, is to find your passion and your purpose. This is a great reminder for all of us to focus on during the pandemic.   To learn more about Lindsay: Lindsay Weisner is a clinical Psychologist in Long Island, New York. Dr. Lindsay Weisner, and she is the co-author of a book with Selene Castrovilla called 10-Steps to Finding Happy which is due to be released on March 20th which is the United Nations International Day of Happiness. Now this was recorded well before Coronavirus was even a thing. It’s amazing how things can turn on their heads! So some of our comments you may look at through a different lens now that we’re living with more uncertainty.Lindsay is a psychologist who specializes in teenagers with suicidal ideation. We’ll talk a little bit more about that in here. Alongside that conversation though is one about what makes us happy? And why we aren’t necessarily as happy as we could be. Specifically we’ll touch on:· How technology is interrupting our lives, and stopping us from being present in the here and now (news notifications anyone?)· How perhaps we really are more stressed out these days· How every generation has their “mess of garbage” to deal with· How we are likely bringing more psychological baggage into our lives than previous generations· How expectations of happiness can lead to disappointment· And the importance of living an active over a passive life. You can pre-order 10-Steps to happy before 20th March. But also remember, 20th March is United Nations International Day of Happiness. We need it this year…so spread so happy around dear people.Dr. Lindsay Wesiners book 10-Steps to Happy is going to be released on 20th March. So, unless you’ve been living under a rock, it’s hard not to miss all the events, news, and general PR buzz about International Women’s Day that was recognised this month. Countries celebrate it in different ways. This year you would have heard about the Day Without Women in the US and many other western countries around the world such as Australia. It is an official holiday in a number of places including: Afghanistan, Armenia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cuba, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, Uganda, Vietnam. Zambia and in China & Nepal for women only. Many brands such as Nike and P&G  launch powerful ad campaigns, while companies around the world ranging from huge multinationals host an array of events, women’s breakfasts and conferences in recognition of the day.   If we move past all the marketing spin, is International Women’s Day still even important? Why do we still celebrate it? Is there an international men’s day? And, looking in to the future, what are the 6 things that we should be focussing on when it comes to gender equality. Let’s go back to the start for a minute or two. What is International Women's Day? And, is there an International Men's Day? Let’s start with Men’s Day - Is there an International Men's Day? Yes, it takes place on November 19 each year and is celebrated in 60 countries around the world. The objectives of the day include a focus on men's and boy's health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models. Now back to International Women’s Day - What is it? The Telegraph did a great short piece about this which I’ll link to in the show notes (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/international-womens-day-2017-did-start-important/) Basically, International Women’s Day (or IWD as it’s commonly referred to) is “a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements – from the political to the social – while calling for gender equality. It has been observed since the early 1900s and is now recognised each year on March 8. Is is not affiliated with any one group, but brings together governments, women's organisations, corporations and charities.” So, why is it still important? I think the best way to answer this question is to give you a few facts about the current situation of women in the world. Women make up more than two-thirds of the world's 796 million illiterate people. (UN Women) Only 22.8 per cent of all national parliamentarians were women as of June 2016, a slow increase from 11.3 per cent in 1995 (UN Women) As of January 2017, 10 women are serving as Head of State and 9 are serving as Head of Government (UN Women) It is estimated that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives. However, some national studies show that up to 70 per cent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime (UN Women) Worldwide, more than 700 million women alive today were married as children (below 18 years of age). Of those women, more than 1 in 3—or some 250 million—were married before 15. Child brides are often unable to effectively negotiate safe sex, leaving them vulnerable to early pregnancy as well as sexually transmitted infections, including HIV (UN Women) Around 120 million girls worldwide (slightly more than 1 in 10) have experienced forced intercourse or other forced sexual acts at some point in their lives. By far the most common perpetrators of sexual violence against girls are current or former husbands, partners or boyfriends (UN Women) At least 200 million women and girls alive today have undergone female genital mutilation/cutting in 30 countries, according to new estimates published on the United Nations’ International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation in 2016. In most of these countries, the majority of girls were cut before age 5. (UN Women) Adult women account for almost half of all human trafficking victims detected globally. Women and girls together account for about 70 per cent, with girls representing two out of every three child trafficking victims (UN Women) One in 10 women in the European Union report having experienced cyber-harassment since the age of 15 (including having received unwanted, offensive sexually explicit emails or SMS messages, or offensive, inappropriate advances on social networking sites). The risk is highest among young women between 18 and 29 years of age (UN Women) Evidence suggests that certain characteristics of women, such as sexual orientation, disability status or ethnicity, and some contextual factors, such as humanitarian crises, including conflict and post-conflict situations, may increase women’s vulnerability to violence (UN Women) Also, 34 per cent of women with a health problem or disability reported having experienced any physical or sexual violence by a partner in their lifetime, compared to 19 per cent of women without a health problem or disability, also based on data from the European Union (UN Women) Now we know what it is and why it's still important, what are the SIX things that we should focus on to accelerate gender equality? 1)     Accelerating Gender Equality for Women and The Environment The situation: Women, especially those in poverty, appear more vulnerable in the face of natural disasters. A recent study of 141 countries found that more women than men die from natural hazards. Where the socioeconomic status of women is high, men and women die in roughly equal numbers during and after natural disasters, whereas more women than men die (or die at a younger age) where the socioeconomic status of women is low. Women and children are more likely to die than men during disasters. (UN Women) "Similarly, in industrialized countries, more women than men died during the 2003 European heat wave. During Hurricane Katrina in the USA, African-American women who were the poorest population in that part of the country faced the greatest obstacles to survival" (IUCN Global Gender Office) Women and children bear the main negative impacts of fuel and water collection and transport, with women in many developing countries spending from 1 to 4 hours a day collecting biomass for fuel. A study of time and water poverty in 25 sub-Saharan African countries estimated that women spend at least 16 million hours a day collecting drinking water; men spend 6 million hours; and children, 4 million hours. Gender gaps in domestic and household work, including time spent obtaining water and fuel and processing food, are intensified in contexts of economic crisis, environmental degradation, natural disasters, and inadequate infrastructure and services (UN Women) So, gender equality goes hand in hand with climate solutions and that makes movements like 1 Million Women are super important and extremely relevant right now. They are a movement of 600,000+ women and girls (and growing everyday) who are pioneers in the gender and climate change arena in Australia and around the world. Climate solutions have to move past world leaders arguing about the proven science and for everyone to take control. Yes, the reality is that we need strong leadership and big decisions to be made now. And this can only happen when we all make it a priority so organisations like 1 Million Women aim for all of us all to be living a low-carbon lifestyle by inspiring 1 million women to take practical action on climate change in their everyday lives to cut carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse pollutant leading to climate change. According to them, if 1 million women all cut 1 tonne each of carbon pollution, it would equal to 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. This is the equivalent of growing a new forest of 5 million trees. They provide resources to guide you through ways to live a low-carbon life and cut C02 in the process, and ask you to kick-start your low-carbon life by making a personal goal to cut a minimum of 1 tonne of CO2 pollution from your daily life within a year. It's an easy way to educated start taking action so I suggest you check them out at http://www.1millionwomen.com.au as a first step. “Climate change responses cannot be effective unless they are gender aware, taking into consideration the different needs of women and men, the inequalities that compound the impacts of climate change for women and the specific knowledge women and men can contribute to solutions” (1 Million Women) If you want some further reading about climate solutions, Project Drawdown will be available from the 18th April which maps, models, and describes the 100 most substantive solutions to global warming. For each solution, they describe its history, the carbon impact it provides, the relative cost and savings, the path to adoption, and how it works. The goal of the research that informs Drawdown is to determine if we can reverse the buildup of atmospheric carbon within thirty years. All solutions modeled are already in place, well understood, analyzed based on peer-reviewed science, and are expanding around the world. So if you had any doubt about the solutions to climate change being available, this is proof that we already have everything that we need to make a difference. 2) Accelerating Gender Equality by Creating Access to Finance for Women The situation: The IFC has estimated that worldwide, a $300 billion gap in financing exists for formal, women-owned small businesses, and more than 70 percent of women-owned small and medium enterprises have inadequate or no access to financial services. Without access to finance, women face difficulties in collecting and saving income, growing their businesses, and pulling their families out of poverty. As a result, women remain largely excluded from the formal economy.  So to recognise International Women’s Day, I decided to make 2 loans to women micro-entrepreneurs in the Philippines through Kiva. And wow – what an impact Kiva made that day! They had a goal to lend $3 million USD to women on Kiva in one week, and not only exceeded it, but DOUBLED it! It was the biggest day for lending in Kiva’s 11 year history and as a result 16,473 women around the world are one step closer to following their dreams of starting or growing a business, going to school and investing in a better future for themselves, their children and their communities. The situation: Lack of access to finance affects women in other parts of the world too. According to Fortune, a 2015 study found that 92% of senior investment teams at top venture capital firms are male. Additionally, fewer female founders – 8% in 2015 compared to 16% in 2014 – received Series A funding in the Bay Area last year. And that’s why when I met Pocket Sun, co-founder of SOGAL Ventures, I knew she was on to something big. As the first female-led millennial venture capital firm, according to them, they are redefining the next generation of diverse founders and funders. Although female-led, they don’t just invest in women entrepreneurs, but changing the status quo and adding diversity to the mix is powerful. As Pocket puts it: “SoGal is all about changing the power dynamics in business and entrepreneurship. This power dynamic is not going to change unless women are sitting on the other side of the table and signing cheques.” 3)     Accelerating Gender Equality for Women in the Workforce The situation: Women’s economic equality is good for business. Companies greatly benefit from increasing leadership opportunities for women, which is shown to increase organizational effectiveness. It is estimated that companies with three or more women in senior management functions score higher in all dimensions of organizational effectiveness (UN Women) 71% of employers who said they had adopted diversity practices said these were having a positive impact on their recruitment efforts (PwC 2017 Report on Winning Female Talent) 86% of millennial women and 76% of millennial men think that an employer's policy on diversity, equality and workforce inclusion is important when they decide whether or not they should work for them (PwC 2015 Report on The Female Millennial)  In the United States, companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 35 percent more likely to have financial returns above their respective national industry medians. And, companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 15 percent more likely to have financial returns above their respective national industry medians. (McKinsey 2016 Diversity Matters Report) That’s why when companies take this seriously, they can create huge impact. In April 2015, Salesforce Founder and CEO, Marc Benioff announced that the company would be taking a look at equal pay within their business. On International Women’s Day 2016 they announced their results. Their assessment showed that they needed to adjust some salaries—for both men and women. Approximately six percent of employees required a salary adjustment, and roughly the same number of women and men were impacted. Salesforce spent nearly $3 million dollars to eliminate statistically significant differences in pay. Wow. Salesforce also increased access to advancement opportunities through their High-Potential Leadership Program, which is designed to provide leadership skills to advance women in the workplace. The program has led to a 33 percent increase in the number of women who were promoted last year. In the last year, Salesforce increased parental leave to 12 weeks off at 80% of total pay. The company also introduced a new gradual return program which offers new parents the flexibility to work reduced hours for the first four consecutive weeks of returning to work, at full pay. The gender pay gap is widely discussed amongst businesses. But how many actually stop, acknowledge there might be an issue and then go on to audit their entire workforce? In the case of Salesforce, this was 17,000 strong. And, in the case of Salesforce, it’s men that benefitted from this exercise too.   4)     Accelerating Gender Equality by Educating Women  The situation according to UN Women: Women make up more than two-thirds of the world's 796 million illiterate people.  According to global statistics, just 39 percent of rural girls attend secondary school. This is far fewer than rural boys (45 percent), urban girls (59 percent) and urban boys (60 percent).  But, this doesn’t have to be the case. Every additional year of primary school increases girls' eventual wages by 10-20 percent. It also encourages them to marry later and have fewer children, and leaves them less vulnerable to violence. (UN Women) Increasing women and girls’ education contributes to higher economic growth.  5)     Accelerating Gender Equality by Ending Violence Against Women The situation according to UN Women: 35 per cent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. Globally, 47 per cent of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner or family member, compared to less than 6 per cent of murders of men.  Women represent 55 per cent of victims of forced labour and 98 per cent of the victims of sexual exploitation.  Globally, an estimated 200 million women and girls have undergone FGM in 30 countries and 700 million were married as children (250 million before the age of 15).  What does this all mean? Apart from the fact that violence of any kind is horrific, it results in a HUGE economic cost to society. According to the OECD estimates suggest that “discriminatory social institutions – including violence against women – cost the global economy approximately 12 trillion US dollars a year. So while it is critical to put in place laws, budgets and plans to transform discriminatory social norms, we also need to empower women and girls, men and boys, to challenge – and change – these norms”. Examples of this by UN Women include: In India women can lose an average of at least five paid work days for each incident of intimate partner violence. This fact would mean the affected woman would get 25 per cent less of her salary each time an incident of violence happens. In Uganda, about nine per cent of violent incidents forced women to lose time from paid work, amounting to approximately 11 days a year, equivalent to half a month’s salary, affecting not only the incumbent person but her family and dependents. Also, research shows for example that women who are exposed to intimate partner violence are employed in higher numbers in casual and part-time work, and their earnings are 60 per cent lower, compared to women who do not experience such violence. Annual costs of intimate partner violence were calculated at $5.8 billion in the United States of America and $1.16 billion in Canada. In Australia, violence against women and children costs an estimated $11.38 billion per year. Domestic violence alone costs approximately $32.9 billion in England and Wales.   The Secretary General of the OECD adds that “across the 160 countries included in SIGI ( Social Institutions and Gender Index), one in three women agrees that domestic violence is justified; in some countries, these acceptance rates climb close to 90%. How can we even begin to tackle violence if women believe it can be justified” First responders are vitally important in dealing with the consequences of violence against women, but ultimately empowering women through education, increased leadership and economic opportunities, as well as access to finance are key in changing societal norms. One of the guests in an upcoming episode on the podcast said to me that we can end violence in one generation - we only need one generation to grow up without any violence to change this. That will forever stay with me. 6)     Accelerating Gender Equality by Advancing Women in Leadership Gender differences in laws affect both developing and developed economies, and women in all regions. According to UN Women (http://www.unwomen.org/en/what-we-do/leadership-and-political-participation/facts-and-figures) “90 per cent of 143 economies studied have at least one legal difference restricting women’s economic opportunities. Of those, 79 economies have laws that restrict the types of jobs that women can do. And husbands can object to their wives working and prevent them from accepting jobs in 15 economies”. The fact is, the more women that are represented in leadership positions around the world, the fast gender equality will become a reality. The World Economic Forum predicts that at the current rate of progress, the gender gap won't close entirely until 2186  If you’re happy waiting for almost another 170 years, then don’t bother doing anything more than you’re already doing. But if you see the economic, social, environmental and political reasons why closing this gap is important, then you need to start doing something about it now. You can start with education. Educate yourself more about this issue and talk to others about it too. In your circle of influence you can choose any one of the above areas that I’ve chosen to highlight and do something about it. Whether it’s joining the 1 million women pledge, funding micro-entrepreneurs around the world, working in your business to promote diversity or, speaking up when the societal norms that permeate a culture of violence against women rears it’s ugly head. You don’t have to wait - you can do something now. This Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast is in honor of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Often torture is ignored and oversimplified in main stream media It’s hard to talk about torture and sell ads It’s hard to talk about torture without diminishing to topic It’s hard to talk about torture But we’re going to try and do the hard thing … According to Cornell Law School’s web site torture is defined as http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2340 (1) “torture” means an act committed by a person acting under the color of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering (other than pain or suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody or physical control; (2) “severe mental pain or suffering” means the prolonged mental harm caused by or resulting from— (3) “United States” means the several States of the United States, the District of Columbia, and the commonwealths, territories, and possessions of the United States. I sat down with two experts in the field of torture. First Arturo Jimenez Bicardi a PhD candidate at University of California at Irvine and he’s doing his dissertation on US torture and targeted killings programs since World War II. Also joining me was Suzanne Bacon the Community Relations Manager for Survivors of Torture, International. They are a San Diego based group that helps people that have survived torture heal. Did you know that there are over 11,000 survivors of politically motivated torture living in San Diego? That’s whom Survivors of Torture, International helps. They also give twice monthly tours of their facility, showing anyone interested the good work they do. Go to the web site www.notorture.org. Give money. Give time. Take the tour.
