It's been 20 years since the Battle of Fallujah, a bloody campaign in a destructive Iraq War that we now know was based on a lie. But back then, in the wake of 9/11, the battlefield was filled with troops who believed in serving and defending the country against terrorism. “Going to Fallujah was the most horrific experience of our lives,” said Mike Ergo, a team leader for the US Marines Alpha Company, 1st Battalion. “And it was also, for myself, the most alive I've ever felt.”This week on Reveal, we're partnering with the nonprofit newsroom The War Horse to join Ergo's unit as they reunite and try to make sense of what they did and what was done to them. Together, they remember Bradley Faircloth, the 20-year-old lance corporal from their unit who lost his life, and unpack the mental and emotional battles that continue for them today. Mike Ergo originally joined the U.S. Marine Corps to play his saxophone in the Marine Corps band. But a short time after joining the Corps in 2001, Ergo changed his mind and asked to be transferred to the infantry. Soon, the U.S. was at war in both Afghanistan and Iraq. After an uneventful first deployment to Iraq, Ergo returned in the summer of 2004 with A Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. A few months later, they were engaged in the vicious Second Battle of Fallujah in November and December of 2004.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Ergo describes preparing to fight in Iraq, learning his company would be part of the fight for Fallujah, and what it's like to get the signal that you'e headed into battle.Ergo also tells us about the intial successes of the Marines and how the insurgent resistance quickly fell into place. He also gives us great detail about the house-to-house fighting that characterized so much of the fighting in Fallujah. He also shares the pain of losing close friends at different points in the battle and how resigning himself to the belief that he would be killed was actually freeing for him. Finally, Ergo details how the fighting in Iraq stayed with him for years after the war, how he moved on, and how he is now helping other veterans.

Think you can't fix your life? It's not easy. However, Mike shows how it's possible even when you have been struggling with the most difficult experiences. His life is an inspiration. I was so struck by his ability to capture such hardships with vulnerable rawness but in a resilient and powerful manner. I knew he'd have a big impact on anyone who listens. Not many men I know can share this way while staying strong and grounded. Tune in and see what I mean. Mike Ergo was raised in Walnut Creek and attended Northgate High School. He served in the Marine Corps infantry from 2001-2005 and deployed to Iraq twice. After returning home, he found meaning and fulfillment in endurance sports and events. He has been involved in endurance sports and has completed 4 full Ironman triathlons, including the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, in 2017. He will return to Kona in October of 2023 to compete once again. Mike now carries an American flag each Ironman in honor of a Gold Star Family and their fallen son or daughter. He lives in Petaluma with his wife and two children. Mike is the director of the North Bay Vet Center, a VA mental health counseling center for combat veterans and victims of military sexual trauma. More on Mike - https://medium.com/military-transition/my-transition-40-mike-ergo-marine-infantry-to-vet-center-counselor-dd6dc2552c16Visit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.comWatch episodes of my podcast:https://www.youtube.com/c/TheresaCarpenter76

Originally dropped November 29, 2022 How would you feel or react if you suddenly found yourself on the brink of death? In today's conversation, Adam speaks with former Marine, Mike Ergo, as he shares his journey through death and rebirth. When people were sitting at home watching on television the horror unfolding in the war in Fallujah, Mike was actually there – fighting for his life and the country. Today, Mike has found meaning and fulfillment in endurance sports and events, including the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in 2017. He is returning to Kona in October 2023 to compete and carry the flag for the Gold Star Initiative, in honor of the service and sacrifice of our fallen heroes. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Taking something positive from his life-altering experience Surrendering to the higher power Understanding that acceptance is not an agreement Mood follows action The big spark that made him decide to change his life The parallels between serving in the war and doing Ironman About the Gold Star Initiative and how it has grown The Litany of Fear taken from Frank Herbert's book, Dune Episode Highlights: [09:20] Taking Something Positive From His Life-Altering Experience Although Mike was fighting for his life, another part of him just surrendered to the moment and didn't resist it. He wasn't trying to die, but he accepted where he was. He wasn't happy that the war caused his existential life-altering experience, but since he was there, he was glad to have something positive come out of it. [16:58] Acceptance is Not Equal to Agreement There are a lot of things that are out of our control. It's important to come to a place of acceptance, but just because you accept something doesn't mean you're okay with it. You don't like it but you accept that it's there. When you accept, you have more power to change what you can in your life and influence the lives of other people, rather than wasting that energy trying to prevent things from happening. [38:33] Love Transcends Death If you dig into any challenge or problem or adversity, you will find different layers. There could be numbness on top and anger below that. There's also that layer of pain, hurt, sadness, or all kinds of unpleasant feelings. But below all of that is where you can tap into that love again. [41:32] The Gold Star Initiative The Gold Star Initiative is part of the Ironman Foundation, where Ironman athletes play a part in the healing process of the families of our fallen heroes. The veteran carries the flag in honor of a fallen military member and the family also becomes a part of that experience to celebrate their loved one's life. The veteran will carry a flag with a streamer that has the fallen member's rank and name. The family hands the flag to the veteran for the run. Once at the finish line, the veteran hands the flag back to the family as a symbol of healing. In this recap episode of Flow Over Fear, I share some of the lessons I learned from my interview with Mike Ergo. Mike is a military veteran having served in Iraq in the early 2000s. During the battle of Fallujah, Mike survived multiple near death experiences, and witnessed many of his brothers die. After coming back from war, battling survivor's guilt, and ultimately overcoming addiction, Mike found healing in endurance sports. Today, he carries the American flag during Ironman races on behalf of a Gold Star Family that has lost their son or daughter to war. Some of the topics shared in this recap include: - How to acknowledge and show appreciation for veterans - Going from suffering to serving - How to honor Gold Star Families - Love transcends death - Connection to a higher power in the midst of surrender - Acceptance as a courageous act If you'd like to learn more about the Gold Star Initiative, visit the Ironman Foundation and find out how you can support this incredible organization.

Mike Ergo served as a Marine rifleman with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines from 2001-2005 and deployed to Iraq twice. After flying home from Iraq and being honorably discharged, Mike's real struggles began. Mike found himself anxious, confused, angry, grief-stricken, and out of place. He turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with his unprocessed trauma, but this led him even further down the path of destruction. In July of 2012, his unhealthy decisions and excessive use of substances led him to hit rock bottom. Mike knew he needed to make significant changes, and step by step, he began the journey to reclaim his life, health, and relationships. Through meditation and endurance sports, he found comfort in discomfort. But, most importantly, he found a new purpose. That purpose is to serve veterans transitioning from battlefield to civilian life and inspire anyone to dream big. Ted talks with Veteran, endurance athlete, podcast host, and therapist Mike Ergo, who describes himself as such: I grew up in Walnut Creek, CA. I enlisted in the Marine Corps during the spring of 2001. I served with the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines and deployed to Iraq twice (2003 and 2004-05). The second deployment we spearheaded Operation Phantom Fury in Fallujah in November 2004. After being honorably discharged in 2005 (promoted Sgt. in 2005), I returned home and married my girlfriend. Sarah and I have two children that were both born in November. This changed how I experience November. It used to be all about death and destruction. Now it is about new life and joy. I earned two degrees from UC Berkeley in social work (2010 and 2012). I live with family in Petaluma, CA and have been the director of the North Bay Vet Center since 2018. I am a licensed clinical social worker and therapist working with combat veterans and vets who have experienced sexual trauma. In my spare time I train for Ironman triathlons, hike the hills with my kids, and find new ways to eat healthy food. Right now it's all about raising broccoli sprouts. I write and podcast on “Transitions from War” and my other podcast “Age Groupies”
