How to Win at the New Year's Resolution Game

This week on the podcast, Todd Liles joins Chris Elmore to discuss New Year's Resolutions.   The word resolution is defined as “a firm decision to do or not to do something.” All of us have made those firm decisions to do something or not do something, especially at the beginning of a new year. But do we stick to those resolutions? Today, the guys discuss the reasons why we don't stick with them and the differences between resolutions and goals.   Most resolutions are made in response to emotions like fear or anger and can be very shortsighted. Other resolutions are made to do things before we “kick the bucket,” also known as the “bucket list.” But these resolutions rarely stick. The emotion that fueled the resolution fades or changes, and so does our “firm decision to do something or not do something."   Bucket list items aren't really a firm decision to do something or not do something. They're more opportunistic. We'll do those if the opportunity just comes up.   The difference between an emotional or bucket list resolution and a goal is that a goal is fueled more by a desire for results. A goal is usually based on incremental achievements through actual work. Todd relates his goals in weightlifting to reach his desired level. He explains how he tracked his progress and ultimately fell short of his goal. But through tracking, he was able to see the improvement his hard work brought about. He kept going and did hit his goal a little later than he wanted. The work he put in and the tracking he did kept him on track.   Usually with a resolution, we fail to put in the work or track the improvement. This leads to the emotion fading or changing or keeping it on our ever-growing bucket list.   This year, set goals instead of resolutions. Plan the work and your expected results, then track your progress. Doing these things will help you actually get to your goal.

Exciting Things Happening in the CSR Program

The CSR Division of Service Excellence Training is growing. Brady Loudermilk and Todd Liles share some insights into what they are seeing from working with CSRs around the country.   We build challenges for ourselves.             Often Brandy encounters CSRs who feel isolated with the issues they are facing. It is powerful when the CSR or Dispatcher has an opportunity to see that they are not alone in the challenges they face. For example, every CSR has faced a price objection, it doesn't matter if their diagnostic is $29 or $149, the price is not the issue.   CSR can become indoctrinated in how things are.   One of the most universal things Brandy sees is that CSRs who have been with the same company for a length of time, start to see the standard operating procedures at that company as the only way to do things.   There are two attitudes you can have to new ideas: That is exciting, how can we make that work here? That will never work here. The 2nd attitude will leave you stagnant. If you want to grow you have to have an open mind to change.   An organized/ automated workflow gets more done.   CSRs often feel that they have more work to accomplish than they have time. One way to reduce this is to organize and automate the workflow. One example is to text or email club members about their upcoming maintenance visits instead of spending hours leaving voice mails that probably will not be returned.   Reducing the negative impacts of multitasking   A major challenge for CSRs when it comes to consistently delivering quality client service is the additional administrative tasks most CSRs have.   This additional work helps companies reduce the number of office staff needed to keep the company moving, and also gives the CSR tasks for when the phone calls are slower.   CSRs often resort to multitasking in order to get their admin tasks done and answer the phone at the same time.   One solution is using smart blocks of time when the phones are typically slower to have admin tasks accomplished.   Brandy shares a story of hearing a recorded call of herself when she was distracted by an admin task while taking a client call. This made her aware of the need to focus on one task at a time, and for a CSR the most important task is taking care of the client on the phone.   The joy of group brainstorming   Brandy recently spent 2 days onsite at Cathedral Plumbing of Texas teaching the PRESS PLAY for CSR series. Out of 20 students, only 7 of them were call takers. The big Ah-HA moment for the group was when the admin staff started brainstorming how they can improve their communication internally to improve client satisfaction externally.   This idea of finding ways to move past great service to exceptional service is what separates prospering companies from the pack.     Resources from this podcast:   PRESS PLAY FOR CSR Classroom   4 FREE CSR Training Videos   The PRESS PLAY CSR Scripts   Also, check out this great deal on a flat rate price book designed especially for plumbers by Marc Carrasco of Cathedral plumbing. In this podcast, Todd Liles and Toby Brodie talk with Dave Marquez about his 50 years in the Plumbing, HVAC, and Electrical fields. Dave has owned his own company for 39 of those 50 years.   Dave says one of his keys to success is a life-long devotion to training. From his beginnings as an apprentice, to his present-day communications training with Service Excellence Training.   8 Years ago, Dave lost his vison due to a stroke, but that has not slowed him down. He has been able to persevere through the challenges of learning to walk, talk, and function without his vision. He does not consider his loss of sight a disability.   He has a passion for passing on his knowledge and experience to his team through continual training.   In the last 12 months, Dave has sent 4 team members to SET training. The first two have doubled their numbers since returning from the 3-day program in Texas.   Dave does not plan to retire; his passion is to continue to work on his business. One day he hopes to pass on his company to his family or his employees.   Dave's advice to contractors is to continue to learn. Expanding knowledge though the many resources available will allow businesses to grow and take care of their employees.

If your business is struggling right now, or you need more cash flow, you might think it's ridiculous for me to say there's something better than new customers. But there is, and that's what we'll cover in this week's interview with Jim Palmer. In this weeks podcast episode: Jim Palmer shows us explains what is better than new customers. Stu McLaren: “You should start spying on people”. How to achieve effortless success. That’s all coming up… Tip Of The Week I have long been recommended to you a program called Evernote. Recently, a new version of this software has been released. They have succeeded in making a great thing even better. The main features of Evernote that I like: Capture anything – save your ideas, things you like, things you hear, and things you see. Access it anywhere -Evernote works with nearly every computer, phone and mobile device out there. Find things fast. Search by keyword, tag or even printed and handwritten text inside images. Lifestyle Business With Stu McLaren Stu McLaren explains why he has been spying on people. Spiritual Foundations God's plan for you and your business is not that you work so hard that you make yourself sick, destroy your mental health, and wreck your family. His kind of success is effortless, and he has already done the work when he died on the cross: Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:2–3 This doesn't mean that you simply sit on the couch and wait for things to fall into your lap. It does mean that as you work, you can be relaxed and free from anxiety and fear. He has already provided every blessing you need in life. So how do you get those blessings? It's simple: believe, and rest on the Lord's promises. You might pray something like this: “Lord, I rest in the work that you have done on my behalf, and I thank you that you are already making good things happen for me. So I will stop all my stressing, struggling, and attempts to control circumstances in order to get what I want. I'm simply receiving what you've already provided.” Feature Segment: Interview With Jim Palmer There is something that is better than new customers-and you might be surprised to discover what it is. That's just one of the nuggets we will reveal in this interview with Jim Palmer. Listen to the podcast audio for the entire interview. And be prepared to take notes!
