Corruption in the police is a sad reality of the job. But for those investigating these coppers, it's especially hard. Often they're mates - but, they're mates who've committed crimes, so there's no holding back. Chris Coster is Victoria Police's last Chief Inspector. His 45-year career came to an end in 2019, and with it, the rank of Chief Inspector was phased out. During his time at Vic Pol, Chris was the Head of Recruiting - meaning he was the final filter in deciding whether a recruit would be handed a gun and a badge. Then, Chris developed and lead the incredibly successful Neighbourhood Watch Program - and finally, internal investigations; work which saw him investigating his mates, and making some incredibly tough calls. Unpack his career with host Brent Sanders, and understand how Chris overcame immense challenges to be lauded as one of the greats of Victoria Police. for the question today tell me what things you guys are excited for in the summer
Hinton departs Google Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer of deep learning and a VP and engineering fellow at Google, has left the company after 10 years due to new fears he has about the technology he helped develop. Hinton says he wants to speak openly about his concerns, and that part of him now regrets his life's work. He told MIT Technology Review: “I have suddenly switched my views on whether these things are going to be more intelligent than us. I think they're very close to it now and they will be much more intelligent than us in the future. How do we survive that?” He worries that extremely powerful AI will be misused by bad actors, especially in elections and war scenarios, to cause harm to humans. He's also concerned that once AI is able to string together different tasks and actions (like we're seeing with AutoGPT), intelligent machines could take harmful actions on their own. This isn't necessarily an attack on Google specifically. Hinton said that he has plenty of good things to say about the company. But he wants “to talk about AI safety issues without having to worry about how it interacts with Google's business.” “No Moats” “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI,” claims a leaked Google memo revealing that the company is concerned about losing the AI competition to open-source technology. The memo, led by a senior software engineer, states that while Google and OpenAI have been focused on each other, open-source projects have been solving major AI problems faster and more efficiently. The memo's author says that Google's large AI models are no longer seen as an advantage, with open-source models being faster, more customizable, and more private. What do these new developments and rapid shifts mean? The exciting future of AI We talk about a lot of heavy AI topics on this podcast—and it's easy to get concerned about the future or overwhelmed. But Paul recently published a LinkedIn post that's getting much attention because it talks about what he's most excited about AI. Paul wrote, “Someone recently asked me what excited me most about AI. I struggled to find an answer. I realized I spend so much time thinking about AI risks and fears (and answering questions about risks and fears), that I forget to appreciate all the potential for AI to do good. So, I wanted to highlight some things that give me hope for the future…” We won't spoil it in this blog post, so tune in to the podcast to hear Paul's thoughts. Sometimes, winter can last a whole year. In this episode, Elise returns to Returning Home: The Podcast after an almost year-long hiatus. In it, she discusses where she went in 2022 and what lessons she learned along the way. If you're looking for insight into why it's ok to take a sacred pause, what to do when you're feeling burned out or how to be present in your life, you will want to listen to this episode. Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode: Learn how you can align your identity with your actions. Discover the secret to being in the present moment. Feel into how you can be the main character in your own life. Resources Listen to previous episodes of Returning Home: Episode 2 | How Sobriety Changed My Life Slow Down To Speed Up: Visualization Masterclass Sign up for Elise's Newsletter and receive a FREE PDF to start your self-compassion journey! Connect with Elise on Instagram: @elisekindya Episode Highlights [01:28] Going Inward to Recharge 2022 was a year-long winter. Back from a year away from podcasting. Lessons learned from taking a break. More movement can happen after taking a retreat away from work. [02:33] Staying Sober for Another Year People are wanting to hear more about sobriety from me. This habit is replaced with other habits. Having the clarity to see that other habits like eating sweets might need to be addressed. Identifying myself as a non-drinker on a subconscious level makes not drinking easier. I'm not involving decision fatigue in not drinking. Mindset work has made staying sober from alcohol easier. [07:35] Cross Country Road Trip Had some “dark nights of the soul” moments on my trip. Rethink your routines, identity, and allow yourself to do something a little different. Let yourself evolve by doing something that scares you. Asking myself- what am I waiting for? The present moment is the only thing that matters. It's your responsibility to make your life what you want it to be. How you think about yourself and how you want to live your life affects the quality of your life. Wherever you go there you are. You can't actually escape yourself. [12:52] Healing in 2022 Some healing modalities I employed were therapy, massage, Reiki, chiropractor, sauna, floatation therapy and more. Aligning the body, mind and spirit to be the best version of myself. The human experience necessitates the body. Returning Home to having a body and enjoying the ride. Immersing myself in love for myself- what does that feel like? Teaching Breathwork classes at Bod Wellness Collective and TAOU Studio. 2 retreats this year: one with my therapist and one weekend long silent retreat. [19:06] Friend Breakups 2022 saw the breakdown of community for me. If you've ever been through a friend breakup, you know how they can consume our mental space. This caused me to pull away a lot last year. Also had worked with a business coach that was not a good experience and sent me into a withdrawal mode of 2022. [21:09] Feeling Better On this side of things in 2023, I am feeling a lot better about the experiences I had last year. Knowing that other people can relate to feeling disappointed or betrayed by people is comforting. Non-attachment can help us make these situations feel better to us. People are the main characters in their own lives and they get to choose how they show up. [22:50] Energy Protection Protecting myself from my own negative thoughts has been necessary. I don't have control over what other people choose to do or not do. I can focus my energy on my life and what I can do to make my life better. Thank you to my friend Ashley who inspired me to get back to the podcast! We have to be the main character in our own life- other people can't be the main character in our lives. Quieting the outside noise and focusing on yourself can help you figure out what's yours to do. [25:29] Exciting Things in 2023 My partner and I got engaged on our cross country roadtrip home! Published a journal on Amazon (get yours here!) The podcast coming back. I started taking voice lessons. Figuring out my work to do. [26:24] It's Ok To Change I usually have a hard time letting myself change. Realizing it is ok to change, even in front of other people. We get to make up our own rules. You don't have to wait until things feel perfect to show up and take action. Give yourself and other people permission to not be perfect. Your definition of perfection might even change. You can know who you are and be flexible at the same time. [29:17] Return Home To Yourself, Enjoy Being You The world will be a better place if you have compassion for yourself and be your true self. In Internal Family Systems, they call it being Self-led. Being your true authentic self. I want to be part of the movement to help people feel like they can be Self-Led. Enjoyed this Episode? About Amanda: Amanda Shipley, PT, DPT, MTC is a pelvic physical therapist in Atlanta, GA with more than 15 years of experience helping patients prevent and heal pelvic floor issues. Her mission is to change the standard of care so that pelvic physical therapy is a part of a complete wellness strategy that incorporates preventative care, like going to the dentist. Dr. Shipley believes in a holistic approach and focuses on treating the whole person and not just their symptoms. After having two unmedicated homebirths, Dr. Shipley is especially passionate about helping birthing people have as smooth a childbirth as possible. She believes that everyone would benefit from seeing a pelvic physical therapist during pregnancy. By supporting birthing people at this pivotal time in their life, we're not only supporting their bodies and immediate families, but we're also helping our communities. Dr. Shipley sees patients at her practice, Renew Pelvic Health, and is the creator and host of the podcast Kumbay'all: The Whole Woman's Resource. She also founded Progressive Pelvic Education with her twin sister, as a way to realize her dream of making pelvic health education more accessible via online courses at progressivepelviceducation.com. In this episode we tackle a question and topic from a listener of the show regarding how get excited and motivated to get out and shoot subjects in your local that may not be as thrilling as places like Yellowstone or Iceland. We dive into the importance of creating a photograph rather than simply using a gorgeous scene as a crutch. Lastly, we talk about the amount of genres of photography available to try and experiment with in places where location doesn't hinder your ability to capture content. Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @likelytowander with her awesome shot of a red Summer Tanager chowing on a dragonfly! This is a photo where her patience allowed her to catch the animal performing an interesting act. The animal's behaviour makes the photo, not the subject itself. If you're listening on Spotify you're able to see her image. Be sure to check out more of her work and keep submitting to the hashtag for your chance to have your image featured and talked about on a future episode!Make a donation via PayPal for any amount you feel is equal to the value you receive from the episodes: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=Z36E4SCB6D3LWThanks for listening!Go get shooting, go get editing, and stay focused.@sethmacey@mantis_photographySupport the show
