In this episode, Steven Visscher, lead manager of the balanced strategies, discusses the impact of rising interest rates and inflation on the balanced portfolio in recent years, Mawer's disciplined and collaborative approach to portfolio construction, and the importance of having a long-term perspective. He spoke about recent changes and additions to the balanced portfolio and provided an update on the performance of the balanced portfolio thus far in 2024. Key Takeaways: Over the last four years, interest rates and inflation have had the most significant impact on the capital markets and the performance of the balanced strategies. Following a surge of inflation in 2022, central banks aggressively hiked rates, which led to the first meaningful loss in a balanced strategy since 2008. After being called into question in 2022, 60/40 portfolios bounced back in 2023 and 2024 following positive fixed income returns, helping support the overall balanced strategy. So far, the market recovery has been led by a narrow subset of businesses, most notably technology companies that are part of the euphoria around artificial intelligence (AI). These companies have experienced extraordinary returns and lifted benchmarks to new heights. However, some of the Mawer balanced strategies weren't heavily exposed to those industries and have continued to trail their benchmarks on a relative basis. Steven and his team think in a probabilistic way meaning that they are intellectually open to the fact that there are many scenarios that could unfold, and they want to have a certain amount of resilience regardless of the scenario. The neutral stance of the balanced portfolio reflects the uncertainty of the current environment. The team's base case scenario is that a recession may unfold over the next six to 12 months. A small portion of capital from the U.S. equity strategy, which is more heavily biased toward larger U.S. businesses, has been shifted to a fairly new asset class, the U.S. mid-cap segment due to a valuation gap. From a balanced perspective, the goal isn't to eliminate risk; it's to manage it. Join me today as I continue a series debunking myths and malicious propaganda that seeks to defame the legacy of revolutionary hero, Che Guevara. In this age where fake news can disseminate at lightning speed, and there is a war against education, knowing the truth of our history is essential. The most often repeated claims about Che Guevara are certainly along the lines of, “he was a mass murderer”, “he killed for sport”, “he was known as el Carnicero of la Cabaña (the Butcher of the Cabaña)”, “a sadistic torturer” among many, many others. Wherever you look, by simply searching his name, mentioning the 4 syllables of his name or invoking his universally recognized image, you will find no scarcity of articles, books, interviews, documentaries, and social media posts announcing that all of this is true, based on the experiences of real Cuban exiles (or their family members in Cuba), and if anyone disagrees they are characterized as insane, uplifting a murderer, how that PragerU video about Che put it; “into sadistic thug worship”, or simply a commie, 17-year-old-socialist or a stupid college kid. The many claims can become overwhelming. Then there's people on the other side, the left with often the best of intentions, defending Che from all of this. Unfortunately these arguments can be riddled with fallacies, and sometimes entirely miss the point. The response “but it was a revolution, people die” is not an acceptable response to the claims that Guevara was a murderer. So today, we ask where the truth is in all of this. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anani-kaike/message

In the opening take, Lee points out that Oklahoma has improved a very important statistic drastically through four games. Then Grant joins to talk about teammates celebrating each other, a brief NFL sidebar, and PFF College showing that they're not an outlet that has a whole lot of credibility (3:20). What do we make of Jeff Lebby and Ted Roof not having press conferences anymore? Lincoln Riley recently suspended a reporter, which we obviously have to rip Riley for (9:50). Let's talk about the OU RB situation-- it's still weird. Lee slightly amends his take on Marcus Major from the Cincinnati game (also some Dillon Gabriel zone read talk), and Brent Venables seems uncomfortable answering questions about Barnes and Sawchuk not playing much (17:10). Savion Byrd is good to go, and what's the deal with Reggie Pearson moving forward (30:45)? Grant provides an update on where OU stands in a lot of analytical rankings. The defense is much better, but is it all because of a soft schedule (35:00)? Grant was watching old OU-ISU games recently. We dig into this week's game by talking about the Cyclones truly terrible offense (47:50). Iowa State's defense seems to be very good again, although they haven't faced any good offenses yet. Even though on paper OU should win easily, will the Sooners be looking ahead to Texas (1:06:20)? We read a couple of comments from the WoE Facebook page (1:16:20). Let's take a look at the Big 12, beginning with a weird line in the Cin-BYU game. Texas Tech is in desperation mode. UCF is a double-digit favorite over Baylor and is WVU-TCU a trap (1:19:10)? Finally we make our weekly picks. Games include Utah-Oregon State/USC-Colorado/KU-Texas/LSU-Ole Miss/Notre Dame-Duke (1:27:20). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonTweets
One very common tendency and temptation most people struggle with is to become fixated upon sufferings, humiliations and the false opinions of others. When we experience one or more of these burdens, we can be tempted to make them the central focus of our life. For example, if you are unjustly humiliated and others have an erroneous opinion of you, it can be exceptionally hard to keep this from dominating your thoughts. Similarly, whatever it is that causes you grief or suffering can easily become the focal point of your life. These tendencies must be overcome by a commitment to look beyond these obstacles and to gaze only on the Truth. What is the Truth? It's that which is in the Mind of God. Nothing less, nothing more, nothing other. As you seek to look beyond the struggles of life and focus only on the Truth, you will discover God's glorious Will. His Will always offers us hope, confidence and joy as we move forward in life (See Diary #1360).What is it that dominates your attention? What is it that you are most aware of day after day? If you tend to let yourself become drawn into the confusions of life, work to change the focus of your attention. Instead, look only at the Will of God. His Will is glorious, inspiring, hopeful and renewing. Pay no attention to anything that is not contained within His Divine Will and the confusion, hurt and humiliation that you struggle with will slowly disappear as it is overwhelmed by the Mercy of God.Lord, help me to remain focused on the Truth as it is seen by Your watchful eye and known by Your perfect Mind. Help me to discover Your Will as the only Truth that I must know and help me to embrace Your Will with my whole being. Jesus, I trust in You. No one looks at anything and sees it exactly as it is. We don't actually see with our eyes; we see with our brain. It might be better said, our brain interprets what we see, hear, and experience. Jesus actually identified this very issue as one of the few things that could make the Word of God completely powerless in our lives. Join me this week in CyberChurch as we discover how our views concerning the Old Testament can distort how we understand the New Testament. More importantly, we will discover the biblical prescription for how to move past all the limitations and Look Past the Veil.

Happy New Year from Stokes Family Office. In this 1-year anniversary episode, Greg and Doug recap 2022 and look forward to 2023. Enjoy, and Happy Holidays!#063 What is the best way to guide online discourse toward compassion and inclusivity? Research shows that it does not matter what you say or how you say it. When discussions go awry, what matters is that you say something. Today's guest, Dr. Evelyn R. Carter, runs cutting-edge studies on detecting and discussing racial bias. She is a social psychologist and president of Paradigm, a platform for building diverse, equitable, and inclusive organizations. In this episode, Dr. Carter shares the steps for planting the seeds of empathy in others and the gold standard approach for changing undesirable behavior within a community. She and Jillian, our host, chat about using research to inform and shape company policy, how stereotype threat theory affects us, self-regulating your bias, and leading with firm kindness.
