Entrepreneurs start businesses in pursuit of financial freedom, yet many struggle to generate consistent profit even as revenue grows. Mike Michalowicz has seen this pattern play out time and time again. While traditional accounting trains business owners to treat profit as what's left over, Mike flipped the formula. He created Profit First, a cash management system that prioritizes profit from day one and has since been adopted by over 700,000 businesses worldwide. In this episode, Mike reveals how entrepreneurs can prioritize profit, build wealth, and finally turn revenue into true financial freedom. Mike Michalowicz is the author of Profit First, which is used by hundreds of thousands of companies across the globe to drive profit – Creator Science is one of those companies. Profit First has helped me develop sound financials for my business. He's also the author of Clockwork, a powerful method to make any business run on automatic, and seven other books as well. With more than 500,000 book sales, all of Mike's books have the same goal – to help small business owners and eliminate what he calls “entrepreneurial poverty.” Simon Sinek has called Mike “…the top contender for the patron saint of entrepreneurs.” This conversation is divided into halves: The first half explores Mike's unique model as an author. For each book Mike writes, he partners with a third party to license the frameworks from his books and serve as the done-for-you service provider. This is super uncommon and part of why he's been so prolific while running a very lean team. So we dig into how that works (and what he'd do differently if he were starting over today). The second half of the conversation is all about writing books. Mike has published nine books since 2008 – including 7 in the last 8 years. So we dig into how he determines what ideas to turn into books and how to write them so quickly. I felt like with me posting this mix the day after my birthday (on Mixcloud), it only made sense to use a recording that I named "Jamie's gift to himself". It's a live recording from my monthly at Clockwork, but this was the day after djing a set at Alvaro G's "Forty Nine" party, where I wanted to keep playing proper house music... so that's exactly what I did the next day at Clockwork! While recording, I had 2 people come up to compliment the music. When I asked if they were visiting or local, they were both locals, and when I asked a follow up, I already knew the answer - "did you used to go to Roxy Blu?", and of course they both said yes. So if you want to hear my personal taste in house music (heavily weighted with classics from the late 90's/early 00's), hit play now!Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dj_j_meSubscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id306968245Bookings & Merch: jamiewichartz @ yahoo.ca
Send a textIf everything still runs through you - decisions, approvals, follow-ups - it's not a motivation problem. It's an ownership problem. In this episode, I sit down with Mike Michalowicz, author of Profit First, Clockwork, and his newest, All In, to unpack why capable teams stall and what actually causes people to step up. We go far beyond culture, perks, or performance pressure and get into Psychological Ownership, the missing system behind self-managing teams, clean handoffs, and sustainable scale.Mike shares how high-performing organizations recruit A-players through education, build safety that unlocks real honesty, and design environments where people take responsibility without being managed into burnout. We also talk through why culture often fails, how community changes everything, and what it looks like to lead people with dignity through every season. If you're scaling, investing in systems, automation, and clarity, but still feel like the bottleneck, this conversation will reframe how ownership is created, sustained, and shared.Books MentionedProfit First by Mike MichalowiczClockwork by Mike MichalowiczFix This Next by Mike MichalowiczThe Pumpkin Plan by Mike MichalowiczSurge by Mike MichalowiczThe Toilet Paper Entrepreneur by Mike MichalowiczAll In by Mike MichalowiczIf you want to go deeper, Mike's work, books, and podcast can all be found at mikemotorbike.com, including free chapter downloads and his podcast Becoming Self-Made.Join Dr. William Attaway on the Catalytic Leadership podcast as he shares transformative insights to help high-performance entrepreneurs and agency owners achieve Clear-Minded Focus, Calm Control, and Confidence. Texans vs Steelers Reaction | Is It Finally Time to Move On from Mike Tomlin?Wild Card Weekend wraps with another brutal and all-too-familiar ending for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the Texans roll 30–6 and once again send Mike Tomlin home early. JV is joined by first-time guest and lifelong Steelers fan Bryson to break down what has become clockwork in Pittsburgh — nine straight seasons without a playoff win and a franchise seemingly stuck in permanent mediocrity. While this loss wasn't entirely on Tomlin in isolation, the bigger picture is impossible to ignore: years of offensive stagnation, missed coordinator hires, heavy defensive investment with declining results, and no clear long-term quarterback plan. Meanwhile, Houston advances behind a dominant, championship-caliber defense that completely carried CJ Stroud through a rough night, raising serious questions about Stroud's regression and future contract outlook. JV and Bryson debate whether Pittsburgh finally needs a full culture reset, why bottoming out might be necessary, and how Houston's defense could legitimately carry them deep into January. One era feels like it's ending — and another may just be beginning.

The Money Habit on How to Finally Take Control of Your Finances What if your biggest money problem isn't how much you earn—but how you manage what you already have? In this week's episode of Richer Soul, bestselling author Mike Michalowicz (Profit First, Clockwork, All In) returns to share insights from his new book, The Money Habit. It's a simple, behavior-based approach to mastering personal finances—no spreadsheets, guilt, or complicated budgets required. Key Insights from the Conversation: Making Money Is One Skill—Keeping It Is Another. Most people learn how to earn but never master how to keep money. Mike reminds us that wealth isn't built by income alone—it's built by intentional systems that preserve and direct your money before it slips away. Financial Independence vs. Financial Freedom. Financial freedom is doing what you want, when you want, without worrying about money. Financial independence means having authority over your money—so it no longer controls you. That authority starts with awareness. How Credit Cards and "Points" Hack Our Brains. Credit cards are engineered to make you spend more. Points and perks are psychological triggers that override rational decision-making. Mike shows how to flip the script by setting up commitment devices—systems that protect you from yourself. Build Your Money "Envelopes" at the Bank. Instead of one big account, divide your money into clear purposes—needs, wants, dreams, and slush funds. Label debit cards for each category. When you spend, you'll instantly see whether you're honoring your priorities or drifting off course. Teach by Example. Your kids don't learn about money from what you say—they learn from what you do. Modeling calm, structure, and intentional spending plants lifelong financial wisdom in the next generation. Money Learning from Mike: We often think more money will solve our problems. It won't. The real transformation happens when we gain authority over what we already have. Whether you earn $50,000 or $500,000 a year, financial independence starts by giving every dollar a job before it leaves your account. Key Takeaway: Financial peace isn't found in making more—it's found in mastering what you already have. Start small: create one new account for your biggest money worry today, label it clearly, and fund it consistently. Small actions, done repeatedly, become lifelong habits. In this episode, I turn to the Romantics as guides for a world coming apart, viewing Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as a protest against a mechanistic worldview that devalues feeling. Some questions that emerge from this journey are: What do we do when technology outpaces our moral framework? Just because we're able to do something, should we? What responsibilities do we incur when we create a new form of life? Are we repeating Frankenstein's mistake when we build systems and then disclaim any obligation to the creatures we have released onto the world? There was a time when hyper-violent, sexually charged OVAs ruled the Japanese home-video market—and few creators embodied that era more than Yasuomi Umetsu, the director behind Kite and Mezzo Forte. Kite even spawned an American live-action remake starring Samuel L. Jackson (which… let's be honest, barely anyone saw). Now, Umetsu is back. His latest work just hit U.S. theaters last week, and we're breaking down exactly what we thought of it.

Clockwork began with a narrow goal—keeping clocks synchronized across servers—but soon realized that its precise latency measurements could reveal deeper data center networking issues. This insight led the company to build a hardware-agnostic monitoring and remediation platform capable of automatically routing around faults. Today, Clockwork's technology is especially valuable for large GPU clusters used in training LLMs, where communication efficiency and reliability are critical. CEO Suresh Vasudevan explains that AI workloads are among the most demanding distributed applications ever, and Clockwork provides building blocks that improve visibility, performance and fault tolerance. Its flagship feature, FleetIQ, can reroute traffic around failing switches, preventing costly interruptions that might otherwise force teams to restart training from hours-old checkpoints. Although the company originated from Stanford research focused on clock synchronization for financial institutions, the team eventually recognized that packet-timing data could underpin powerful network telemetry and dynamic traffic control. By integrating with NVIDIA NCCL, TCP and RDMA libraries, Clockwork can not only measure congestion but also actively manage GPU communication to enhance both uptime and training efficiency. AI is here to stay. It will just get better and more polished as we move towards a more futuristic society. Accounting firms might as well know how to use it to their advantage. This is exactly what Fady Hawatmeh is doing through his company Clockwork, the first AI-powered Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A). He joins Michelle Weinstein to share how they are revolutionizing CFO advisory and solving software inaccuracy through automation, minimizing hours of manual work to just a few minutes. Fady also talks about the importance of confidence and hard skills in offering CFO services, how to focus more on providing value than simply chasing revenue, and the right way to overcome perfectionism.
The musical landscape of September 2024 unfolds like a treasure map of sonic discoveries as Matt Sidhom and guest co-host Jen Tully navigate through twelve diverse new releases that defy easy categorization. They kick things off with the track, "Everybody Scream," from Florence and the Machine's upcoming sixth album, which creates a space where women don't have to "be quiet" or "be kind" – a witchy celebration of unrestrained feminine power. Meanwhile, Role Model's infectious "Sally When the Wine Runs Out" has transformed into a cultural moment, with celebrities from Natalie Portman to Al Roker taking turns as the song's namesake during live performances. The conversation shifts to gritty territory with Idles' "Rabbit Run," where Joe Talbot's distinctive Cockney delivery powers the soundtrack to Austin Butler's new film. This leads into Old Dominion's surprisingly affecting "Miss You Man," a country ballad that captures male friendship and grief with remarkable authenticity. Wet Leg reveals unexpected vulnerability with "Pokemon," a softer departure from their typically harder-edged sound, while Doja Cat delivers another potential hit with "Jealous Type" . The musical journey continues through jam band territory with Goose's soulful "Madelena," the country-rap fusion of BigXThaPlug and Shaboozey's "Home," and the truly unexpected "Clockwork" by Laufey, which sounds like a Disney princess number addressing thoroughly modern themes. The episode closes with universal praise for Dominic Fike's "Sandman," a perfect blend of hip-hop, rap, and old-school R&B influences that showcases why he remains one of music's most exciting voices. Click here now to access the tool > How to Grow a Business You Love by Serving the Right People at the Right Value Does it ever seem like you're giving everything to your business, yet the success you pictured still feels just out of reach? In this episode of The Brilliant Book Festival, I'm joined by Mike Michalowicz, author of nine business books including Profit First and The Pumpkin Plan, to explore how entrepreneurs can escape what he calls “entrepreneurial poverty” and create a business that runs smoothly, profitably and in alignment with their strengths. Mike shares why the secret to growth isn't serving everyone, but identifying the right clients, pricing in a way that reflects your true value, and letting go of the rest (without guilt). We talk about why bad-fit clients drain more than your bank account, how to attract people who value what you offer, and why you should always love yourself enough to charge what you're worth. If you've been caught in the cycle of over-delivering, undercharging, and feeling too stretched to serve your best clients well, this conversation will help you see a simpler, more sustainable path forward - one that makes space for better clients, better work and a better life. Prefer to WATCH instead of read? Click here to watch this episode on YouTube “Price is the ultimate marketing method. It tells the world how valuable you believe your work is.” – Mike Michalowicz Why Pricing is More Than a Number Most entrepreneurs fear raising prices, but as Mike explains, pricing isn't just about covering costs. It's a signal to the market about the quality and impact of your work. When you charge appropriately, you attract clients who align with your value, and you create the capacity to serve them at your best. Letting Go of the Wrong Clients It's tempting to hold on to every paying client, but the wrong ones cost far more than they contribute. Mike shares strategies for identifying unfit clients, and how to release them in a way that's professional, kind, and freeing - making space for your business to grow in the right direction. “Your best business will always grow from your best clients. Focus there, and create more space for them to thrive with you.” – Mike Michalowicz The Three Questions that Unlock Growth Mike offers three simple but powerful questions to ask your best clients, questions that reveal what makes you stand out, how you can differentiate yourself from the industry, and where to find more people just like them. From “Doing it All” to Designing a Business that Runs Without You We discuss the trap of the “superhero entrepreneur” who tries to do everything themselves, and why true leadership means designing a business that thrives without your constant presence. Mike explains how he tests this by taking a four-week (sometimes seven-week) annual vacation, and how it's made his business stronger. If you only take one thing away from this episode… Your best business will come from your best clients. Focus on them, price in alignment with your value, and give your business the space it needs to grow - without burning yourself out. Final Thought to Reflect On? What could change for you if you stopped competing for every client - and started leading in your own niche, with quiet confidence and clear value? Full transcript and show notes Mike's Website / Twitter / Instagram / YouTube / LinkedIn *** RECOMMENDED NEXT EPISODE → #176: April Dunford – How self-publishing a book exploded her client service business. *** ASK CREATOR SCIENCE → Submit your question here *** WHEN YOU'RE READY

This week on the Digitally Overwhelmed podcast I got to interview author and popular keynote speaker, Mike Michalowicz. I had so much fun interviewing Mike because he has so much wisdom to share about running your small business finance (among other things). Sometimes when it comes to “serious” topics like doing the finances in our business, it can be hard to find resources and frameworks that are motivating to follow. And all of Mike's books do exactly that: the inspire you to take action, but also give you some clear rules to follow. In this conversation we talk about bringing comedy to the business world, depression in the entrepreneur community, and how he uses A/B testing in his business to make decisions.
