This is: Announcing Draft Amnesty Week (March 11-17), published by tobytrem on February 27, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR The Forum will hold a Draft Amnesty Week from March 11th-17th. Draft Amnesty Week is a chance to share unpolished drafts, posts you aren't sure you agree with, and drafts which have become too ugh-y to finish. We'll host smaller events and threads in the weeks before, to help you come up with ideas, prioritise your drafts, and polish anything that needs polishing. Keep an eye out (and read more below). This is a variation on an event the Forum team ran in 2022: see more here. How does Draft Amnesty Week work? Optionally - you take part in the buildup events this week and next week, to come up with ideas for posts to write, and find time to draft them. During Draft Amnesty Week (March 11-17), you publish your draft post(s). To make it clear that they are a part of the Draft Amnesty event, you can put this table[1] at the top of your post, and tag the post with the Draft Amnesty Week tag. There'll be a banner up on the Forum. Even if you don't post, you can give authors feedback! Vote, comment; help us all highlight the best ideas from the event. After the week has ended, I'll write a round-up post reviewing some of the best submissions. Why run Draft Amnesty Week? Firstly, because I suspect that many of you have interesting outlines or half-drafted posts in your google drives. Draft Amnesty Week is a time when we have social permission to release these into the world (and to press your friends and colleagues into doing the same). Linch's post from last time is a great example of an incomplete post which is much better out and published than in and unseen. Secondly, because our last Draft Amnesty event went really well. We got valuable posts like Clifford's Lessons learned from Tyve, and a post on lessons for AI governance from early electricity regulation, which would likely not have been made public at the time, if it wasn't for the event. Timetable This week (Feb 26 to March 3): Collecting Ideas I've posted a question thread, asking: "What posts would you like someone to write?" (like this past edition). Draft Amnesty Week is a great opportunity to have a crack at providing one of these posts, even if you aren't confident you can do a perfect job. March 4-10: Writing Week I'm running two events on the EA gather.town for Forum users to get together and hack together some drafts. The first will be on March 5th from 10am-12pm UTC. Sign up here. The second will be on March 7th from 6-8pm UTC. Sign up here. I'll also post a thread asking "What posts are you considering writing?" (like this one). This is an opportunity to gauge how excited the Forum is about your different ideas, and prioritise between them. Draft Amnesty Week (March 11-17) This is the week when we will actually post our drafts Draft Amnesty Week FAQ How draft-y is too draft-y? My main recommendation is that the reader should be able to understand your writing, even if it is incomplete, unpolished, or skeletal. For example, it is okay to have a bullet point such as: "I was going to write something about how this problem applies to the problem of moral knowledge here, but reading this Encyclopedia page because aversive, so I'm skipping over it for now" However, it wouldn't be as valuable for the reader to see a bullet point such as: "Insert moral knowledge stuff" If you want a second pair of eyes, DM me and I'll look at your draft. What if I don't want to see Draft Amnesty posts? In January this year, I took over running Tyve, a start-up that promotes workplace giving. Through Tyve, employees set up recurring monthly donations to charity. The donations are simple to administer. And they come straight from their pre-tax earnings. So they save the average employee hundreds of pounds a year. Ben Clifford (@Clifford), Ben Olsen and Sam Geals in 2019 founded Tyve in 2019. After strong initial growth, Tyve they put Tyve into ‘maintenance mode' in late 2021. Ben Clifford talks about these initial years in Lessons learned from Tyve, an effective giving startup. In this post, I'm going to cover: why I got involved in Tyve; why I believe Tyve could raise large sums for effective charities; what we're doing differently this time around; and how you could help (if you were so inclined). TL;DR If you don't want to read the whole thing, here's a short summary. Only a fraction of adults in the UK who give to charity do it through the workplace (many more do in the US). Workplace giving seems a relatively undertapped channel. When Tyve launches at companies it gets high participation rates and is very sticky (high retention rates). Most donations are “new money” that would not otherwise have been donated to charity. This is especially true for the ~40% of donations that go to Tyve's recommended (effective) charities. We're making changes to make Tyve more attractive to companies to adopt. These include: making it free to use, adding impact reporting and testing donation matching for recommended (effective) charities. There are several (known) reasons why we may fail to get more companies using Tyve. These include charitable giving been seen as a ‘nice to have' and there being a high hurdle for companies to do anything new. There's an easy (and high EV) way you could help: introduce us to the company you work at! How I got involved I've spent most of the last decade leading product and design teams at tech scale ups. Late last year, the most recent of these scale-ups went (the bad ‘boom', not the good one, like at the end of a fist bump). I took it as a opportunity to look beyond the commercial tech world. I'd spent years with the next startup funding round as a key factor behind almost every decision. I was ready for something a bit different. I started to speak to some people in the EA community, talking through options, understanding where they saw the most potential impact. In parallel, I was wondering why smaller companies weren't offering ‘payroll giving' to their employees. (This is the mechanism that enables employees to give to charity from pre-tax earnings.) At this point, I'd been giving a % of income to effective charities for several years. It felt meaningful and important. But it also required a fair bit of admin. I had a spreadsheet for tracking what I'd earned and logging donations (across multiple charities). And then trying to work out what this meant from a tax perspective (after accounting for GiftAid). I'd had access to payroll giving a decade ago when I'd worked at a massive company and it had made giving so simple. No need to track earnings and donations—and the tax benefits were automatic. With modern tech we must be able to make this available to all companies, even those without huge HR teams? Meeting Ben Clifford was serendipitous. Ben had already founded Tyve. Working with Ben O and Sam, he'd built pretty much the exact the product that I'd started sketching out in my mind (and in my terrible handwritten notes). I sat down with Ben in a bakery in what looked like an abandoned parking lot (his idea). After about 15 minutes, he asked me if I wanted to take over Tyve. It didn't work out as a for-profit but looks somewhat promising as a non-profit and has facilitated £630k in donations (around £160k of this went to Founders Pledge recommended charities). In this post, I share the story and my lessons learned. Since writing this draft, I'm excited that a new CEO with vastly more product experience than me has taken on Tyve as a nonprofit. Main learnings: Fall in love with the problem, not the solution I'd prefer to do similar projects as nonprofits in the future Probably don't try to solve a lack of effective giving with technology Fundraising at workplaces can work decently well but I'm not sure EA/tech helps Don't confuse “this should exist” with “people want this to exist” Ignore all the above advice Brief history I started Tyve (like Tithe with a funky spelling) after working at Founders Pledge in September 2019. The idea was to encourage employees to give a % of their income to charities and we'd encourage them to give effectively. My startup pitch was as follows: millennial employees care about purpose and employers need to find better ways of delivering this one way they could do this would be by supporting people in giving to causes they care about there's a nifty system in the UK called payroll giving where the employer can play a helpful role in enabling employees to donate pre-tax to charity through their payroll payroll giving appeared to be a potentially untapped market. Only 2% of people in the UK give through payroll and apparently this is 30% in the US the existing players all had terrible UX and we were going to fix it and create a modern experience (like challenger banks had done to high street banks) we were also going to use the cost-effective estimates of our recommended charities to quantify the good they were doing, making it more satisfying I now feel pretty iffy about most of the assumptions and the argument - I'd like to think this is based on what I learnt but I also think I could have realised at the time that some of this argument is pretty weak. I was relatively sceptical about donation apps but I thought I might have found a problem (small startups have employees who want to feel like they're at a “good” company but doing CSR at small startups is an effort). I thought a cheap alternative would be to provide a spruced-up version of payroll giving. I built an MVP with my cofounder Ben O (a great software developer who I met at EAG Oxford 2016 with the explicit intention to find cofounders - kudos to that conference). I got 5 companies whose founders I knew well signed up and paying for the beta. We were pretty excited as people were giving unusual high amounts (thanks to anchoring people on % and targeting fairly well-paid startup employees) and about 50% was going to charities we'd recommended (either based on GiveWell or Founders Pledge). I quit my job and then raised £150k SEIS from well-known angel investors in the UK. It was a buzz raising this money ...

Det er samme moralske krise i USA som i Vest-Europa: Hvor ble moralen av? For den nye moralske overklassen er ikke dette et gyldig spørsmål. For de som lever ute i den virkelige verden trenger man ingen oversettelse. Den moralske krisen er følbar over alt. Derfor var Erna Solbergs forslag om å avkriminalisere narkotika så avslørende. Stort tydeligere kan man ikke demonstrere sin likegyldighet. Douglas Murray sier til Tucker Carlson at USA lenge har vært styrt av elite som har bare forakt til overs for vanlige mennesker og ser på dem med forakt. USA har en profesjonell hær, men soldatene vil ikke dø for en elite som forakter samfunnene de er fra. Det er et vendepunkt når soldatene vender hjem fra Afghanistan. Tyve års krig har ikke vært nok til å stabilisere landet. Det er en endeløs krig som virker utmattende og meningsløs. Norge diskuterer ikke engasjementet og hva meningen var. De spørsmålene som fikk Norge til å dra ut, stilles nå i norske gater. Afghanerne har kommet hit og vi vet like lite hva vi skal gjøre her som der de kommer fra. Vi har mistet evnen til å prioritere. Vi vil dele alt med alle og ender opp med å miste alt.

Radio Rackham er et nyt kritisk tegneseriepodcast, der tager såvel den hjemlige som den internationale tegneseriekultur under behandling og ligeligt sætter fokus på tegneserien som kunstform og kulturfænomen. Radio Rackham er alligvel ikke helt nyt, da det fortsætter et projekt, der startede med lanceringen af tegneserietidsskriftet Rackham i sommeren 2000 og siden udviklede sig til udstillingerne og tegneserieantologierne under BLÆK-paraplyen og sidenhen til deltagelse i etableringen af Dansk Tegneserieråd, Pingprisen og tegneseriesitet nummer9.dk, blandt andre ting. Radio Rackham søsættes nu i erkendelse af, at den progressive tegneseriekultur holdet bag måske mere støjende end vedholdende plæderede for, i vidt omfang har ladet vente på sig. Ikke fordi endnu et podcast gør så forfærdelig meget forskel, men fordi det alligevel er dejligt at have et forum for fælles drømme. Radio Rackham er ikke tænkt udelukkende som forum for stifterne, da deres efterhånden grånende og i stigende grad fastgroede forestillinger langt fra alene gør en sommer. Derimod håber vi på et forum for den bredere tegneseriekultur og vil således inkludere så bred en vifte af gæster, reportager og indslag som tegneserieformen af i dag fortjener. Tyveårige Anna er 10. generation på gården på Stevns, hvor tip-tipoldefars blodbøg kaster skygge i haven, og loftet er fyldt med forfædrenes efterladenskaber. Jelena flygtede som 12-årig fra krigen i Bosnien - og fra sit barndomshjem og hele det kendte liv. I Danmark blev familien indkvarteret på skibet Flotel Europa, og selv om den lille vinduesløse kahyt med to køjesenge var trang og mørk, så kom den til at føles som et hjem. Susanna Sommer vender hjem fra rejsen til det fremmede og den lille thailandske fiskerby og falder forbavsende velrutineret ind i hverdagen igen. Jelena flygtede som 12-årig fra krigen i Bosnien - og fra sit barndomshjem og hele det kendte liv. I Danmark blev familien indkvarteret på skibet Flotel Europa, og selv om den lille vinduesløse kahyt med to køjesenge var trang og mørk, så kom den til at føles som et hjem. Susanna Sommer vender hjem fra rejsen til det fremmede og den lille thailandske fiskerby og falder forbavsende velrutineret ind i hverdagen igen. I udsendelsen kan du blandt andet høre om nutidens nomader, hvorfor der er et kommercielt marked for hjemlighed, hvornår man er hjemmeblind, og hvorfor nostalgi er det moderne menneskes grundfølelse.
