A talk by Thanissaro Bhikkhu entitled "The Path to the Deathless"
What if the story we've been told about food—about meat, animals, and what it means to truly nourish ourselves and the land—is incomplete? Many people today are searching for a way of eating that feels healthier, more ethical, and more sustainable. Some turn away from animal foods out of compassion. Others are working to reconnect with traditional diets and local farms. But what if the answers aren't as simple as we've been led to believe? Our guest today is Abey Rae Scaglione, author of Radical Farm: Animals, Food, and Our Future. Abey's journey is anything but conventional. She became a vegetarian at just thirteen years old, driven by a deep concern for animals. Years later, she found herself raising livestock as a regenerative farmer—facing the emotional, ethical, and ecological realities of producing food within a living system. In this conversation, Abey shares what it was really like to wrestle with the moral complexity of eating animals—and why she ultimately came to believe that well-raised livestock may actually do less harm than many plant-based food systems. She explains how animals play a vital role in restoring soil health and ecological balance, why removing them from agriculture could push farmers toward more synthetic fertilizers and industrial practices, and how regenerative farming offers a path forward that honors both the land and the animals. We also explore what this means for you—whether you live on acreage or in a city apartment—and how small, intentional choices can help you reconnect with real food and more sustainable ways of living. This is a thoughtful, honest, and at times surprising conversation about food, ethics, and our place in the natural world. On today's episode of the Lang Fairy Tale Project we have a double bill! First comes Soria Moria Castle, performed by Eleanor, which feels like a story built out of parts of other possibly better tales. Does it have original things to offer, besides a witch with a nose so long she can stir soup with it?Then it's time for The Death of Koschei The Deathless, read by Martin, which features many elements listeners might recognise from Eleanor's telling of Vasilisa The Brave over Christmas.Yet in this original translation, despite some awesome writing, seems to miss out key elements of this very famous story. We chat about all this at the end of the episode, and wonder if Baba Yaga could ever really be so easily dispatched...If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English. They were amongst the most influential books of their time, changing the course of children's literature - although they're hardly just for children, and often deal with quite challenging concepts.Today, purchasing a complete set of the Lang Fairy Books in good condition costs over £4,000 ($5,000+).Thankfully, the collections are all out of copyright, meaning that we can now tell these stories, in podcast form, many for the first time, and share them with a global audience, for free. Our plan is to release the stories between main series of Three Ravens, performing them straight (though with plenty of silly voices) letting the tales speak for themselves in all their madcap, sharp-edged, often quite bizarre glory. The only edits we have made are to amend some culturally-insensitive epithets, which typically pertain to ethnicity, with any such edits made by Eleanor Conlon.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?REGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURVisit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. For our April 2026 episode of Magus we're plunging elbow-deep into the Enlightenment to talk about the magical life of Sir Isaac Newton!Arriving on this planet during the first few months of the English Civil War, Newton was abandoned by his mother, raised by his dead father's parents, and was a vengeful, mischievous child. After a fist-fight in a churchyard during his early teens Newton turned things around, becoming the top student at his local Grammar School, earning a scholarship to Trinity College Cambridge. The standard view of Newton's life was then that, while refusing to complete his training to become a priest, he also made some of the most important discoveries in all of physics. What people speak less of is his occult life, which remained hidden until the 1930s.For Newton laboured for 27 years seeking the Philosopher's Stone, translating the works of Hermes Trismegistus, reading myths and legends and alchemical formulae, and doing terrible things to his own health.A tale of secretive obsessions, heretical beliefs, and monk-like solitude, as Keynes said of him, "He was not the first of the Age of Reason by the Last of the Magicians."We really hope you enjoy! Speak with you again on Thursday for a double-bill of fairy tales and chats about them with "Soria Moria Castle" and "The Death of Koschei the Deathless."Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Refestramus return this week with their third studio album, “Morri's Rock Boutique,” a nine-track release scheduled to be on all streaming media this March 20, 2026, via Melodic Revolution Records.Prog UK calls “Morri's Rock Boutique” “enjoyably vibrant and hooky.”Echoes and Dust praises the album's “cinematic landscape with its surrealistic wonders, ghost-town amusement parks, and the haunting ghost that spooks the location”!Powerplay writes the album features “Grown up prog full of Great musicianship and songwriting.”The order link for the album on digital and CD is refestramus.bandcamp.com/album/morri-s-rock-boutique “Morri's Rock Boutique” charts a path through collapse and illusion toward clarity—where the joke turns serious: right and wrong still exist, and you still answer to them.A concept album about surviving the absurd—emotionally, spiritually, and politically— “Morri's Rock Boutique” moves through storms of loss, collapse, and memory toward moments of humor, tenderness, and human connection. Blending folklore, mental health, myth, and modern life into an eclectic progressive-rock soundscape, the record explores the fragile beauty of becoming: not perfection, but refinement.Across the album, each song presents its own vignette. “Storms” frames a human life like a thunderstorm—powerful, beautiful, and temporary. “The Lucky Ones” nods to the Sermon on the Mount's upside-down blessings and features Crack the Sky guitarist Rick Witkowski. “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight” (feat. Lynx of Old Blood) plays like a David Lynch noir—dreamlike, unstable, and haunted by the question of what's real and what's remembered—until the only way out is forgiveness.“The Cossack's Dream,” featuring Kansas electric violinist Joe Deninzon, is Refestramus' English-language adaptation of a traditional Slavic song. “Lakeview Samurai” is a surreal character sketch set in Chicago—part satire, part fever dream. “Hell or NYC?” features Van der Graaf Generator saxophonist David Jackson, leaning into the album's vertigo and dark comedy. The record's culminating epic, “Deathless,” draws on Slavic folklore's Kashchey the Deathless—a figure who feeds on conflict and feels at home in the smoke of war—unfolding as a three-part suite: “Above Volokov's Mill,” “Goodbye, America!,” and “And He Always Will.”“Morri's Rock Boutique” is produced by Ian Beabout, mostly in Dan Bozek's studio at Aardvark Productions in Steubenville, Ohio.
6/8. Professor Emily Wilson emphasizes the pervasive and often ambiguous role of the gods in The Iliad. They interfere constantly, appearing in various disguises, and hold strong opinions. Though "deathless," gods like Aphrodite and Ares can be wounded and bleed "ichor" rather than blood, revealing their human-like flaws despite divine power. Figures like Hera cleverly outmaneuver Zeus, and Thetis, Achilles's mother, tirelessly advocates for her son, framing much of the poem's plot through her prayers to Zeus.

Insight Meditation Society - Forest Refuge: dharma talks and meditation instruction
(Insight Meditation Society - Forest Refuge) Citta/heart is like a lake with waves rippling through it. The unawakened response is to create walls to resist the unpleasant, and fences to retain the pleasant - and ‘me' to hold it all. Awakening responses to the waves are the skills of samadhi and brahmavihara. These make the lake vast and able to allow waves to arise and subside. They are doors to the Deathless - the unconstructed that the citta can enter through non-holding.
In the fourth part of a series of talks about the 'Going for Refuge and Prostration Practice of the Buddha Shakyamuni', Vajratara shifts the perspective from us contemplating the Refuge Tree, to the figures on the Refuge Tree contemplating us. Blessings or adhisthana is the way the Buddha responds to us, and all we have to do is tune in. How do we remain receptive? What does it feel like to be blessed and purified? What are we purified of? From the talk Contemplating the Refuge Tree 4: The Sprinkling of the Deathless given at Tiratanaloka Retreat Centre, 2022. *** Help us keep FBA Podcasts free for everyone! Thráin escapes the Balrog in Moria and establishes Erebor; Sara can't escape Alan and the PPP quite yet, despite her best efforts. Join The Man of the West and The Shieldmaiden of Rohan as we begin a five-part look at the Dwarves, starting with two episodes on Appendix A III to The Lord of the Rings on Durin's Folk. Durin the Deathless lived a very long time, but still managed to die - for now; the Balrog drives Durin's Folk out of Moria — there were people runnin' everywhere, tryin' to run from the destruction; and Azog signs his own death certificate: on Thráin's forehead. Alan and Sara wonder how new baby Durins are recognized, ask if cold drakes have air conditioning, and salute Azog for not using Comic Sans MS. Also, Nar the pirate dwarf from Somerset shows up. I finally completed a very fun challenge. Here's why the juice is worth the squeeze.
Awareness, or mindfulness, is the keystone of the Buddhist path and of any truly human life. The Buddha's teaching on what awareness is and how to practise it is vast, and profound, and takes us far beyond what we might usually associate with the word 'mindfulness'. It requires a willingness to open our hearts and a good deal of courage to enter upon this way. Are you up for the challenge? Prajnahridaya explores how cultivating awareness is central and crucial to our existential situation, as well as evoking some of the wonders and treasures we can expect to discover if we dedicate ourselves to this practice. Padmavajra's wonderful series on the Dhammapada, the most popular of early Buddhist texts. All of the Buddha's core teachings are here - held in heart and mind there's more than enough in the Dhammapada to take us as far in our practice as we can imagine, and then on beyond... Excerpted from the talk Mindfulness is the Way to the Deathless as part of the series The Dhammapada - the Buddha's Way of Truth given at Padmaloka Retreat Centre, 2007, as part of the Dharma Training Course for Mitras. *** Subscribe to our Dharmabytes podcast: On Apple Podcasts | On Spotify | On Google Podcasts Bite-sized inspiration three times every week. In this episode, we dive into the very heart of Buddhist wisdom: the Four Noble Truths. These foundational teachings illuminate why we experience suffering and dissatisfaction and the path to inner peace and freedom. Buddha explained that dukkha, translated as suffering or dissatisfaction, arises from craving (attachment) fueled by ignorance. To use these Truths in daily life, Buddhist Teacher JoAnn Fox suggests a powerful practice for letting go of attachment: “Welcome Everything.” Welcome Everything What does it mean to truly embrace life as it unfolds, without clinging or resistance? We can use this simple yet profound mindset of welcoming everything to cultivate peace and free ourselves from the cycles of craving and dissatisfaction. The Four Noble Truths: The Truth of Suffering (Dukkha): Life is pervaded by suffering and dissatisfaction. Suffering includes not only physical pain but also emotional pain, such as anxiety, depression, and grief. The Truth of the Origin of Suffering (Samudaya): Suffering arises from craving (also called attachment) fueled by ignorance. The Truth of the Cessation of Suffering (Nirodha): It is possible to end suffering and dissatisfaction by letting go of attachment. The Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering (Magga): The way to the end of suffering and dissatisfaction is through the Noble Eightfold Path, a practical guide to ethical living, mental discipline, and wisdom. Him I call a brahmana, who has no desire either for this world or for the next, who is free from craving and from moral defilements. Him I called a brahmana, who has no craving, who through knowledge of the Four Noble Truths is free from doubt, and has realized Nibbana the Deathless. --Buddha, The Dhammapada (Verse 410 and 411) References and Links Buddha (1986).The Dhammapada: Verses and Stories. The Deathless Mausoleum has arrived and here's how to tackle and obtain Deathless Thanos!!
(Sati Saraniya Hermitage) How can we rescue ourselves from the obstacles to our happiness? We must not disregard the power of awareness in the present moment to vanquish suffering. For in this very moment is everything we need to know. All moments, whether tainted or blessed, are conditioned by their predecessor. Without care and discernment, vigilance and integrity, we could easily fall into states of decline. Ill-will begets enmity, while joy begets ease and serenity, and each moment is the mother of the next. So too, stepping into the joys of life as it unfolds, we live by the best qualities we can reap. One bare insight into truth and we know what we truly are. Then we open the gates to the Deathless
(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) An intimate sharing of over two decades of courtship with "the deathless."
