The story changed for Valparaiso after 72 hours in St. Louis. Roger Powell Jr. has spent the last two years telling Valpo fans that the Beacons were going to tell a beautiful story that would culminate with cutting down nets. A new chapter was added at Arch Madness this weekend after victories over UIC and Northern Iowa as well as a gutting defeat at the hands of March nemesis Bradley. The Victory Bell's Paul Oren spends nearly an hour working through a variety of topics related to Arch Madness, including several that might not sit well with the league office or Valparaiso's fan base. Today we got to catch up with Coach John Arredondo. Coach A has led the Valparaiso Girl's XC program for 17 seasons. We ask him about what makes the Valpo program special, his memories of a magical 2023 State Meet, and even dive into some music suggestions toward the end of our conversation.
The Victory Bell: The Podcast returns with an “emergency pod” after Valparaiso's 80-62 loss in Terre Haute on Wednesday night. The game featured a dominant first 10 minutes from Cooper Schwieger, a record-setting output from All Wright, and maybe the most disappointing collective performance of the season as Valpo dropped its eighth straight game. After driving home in silence for about an hour on Wednesday night, I decided to open up my phone, hit record and share my thoughts on what transpired. There's no fancy intro or theme music. A couple of coughs made it on the air simply because this episode is as barebones as it gets. Just raw emotion after a difficult game to watch. John 2:1-11On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to me and to you? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the person in charge of the banquet.” So they took it. When the person in charge tasted the water that had become wine and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), that person called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee and revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. I empathize with the groom from our story today. Let me tell you why. We had less than a year to plan our wedding, which was less than ideal for Katelyn. And between other weddings and moving off to seminary, we really only had one date that worked: June 11th, which was a Sunday. But we had this great idea. We love breakfast, so we thought we would do a Sunday morning brunch for the reception, replete with mimosas, the Sunday paper, and the best brunch spread you'd ever seen. It was a great idea; the only problem was, we didn't have any money. Katelyn was in her senior year at Valpo, working two jobs as her schedule allowed. I was doing an internship at a church in Milwaukee where I got paid $500 a month. That was hardly enough to pay for the drinks, let alone the food. And food really is the centerpiece of the reception. So we had the impossible challenge of finding a caterer who was good and affordable on our measly budget. After searching and searching, I found her: Judy Baker of Chesterfield, IN. No website listed, just a landline phone number. When we met with her, Ms. Baker was well into her 80s and told us she had been catering weddings longer than Katelyn and I had been alive, combined. We told her what we were hoping for: brunch theme, eggs, potatoes, shrimp and grits, croissant sandwiches, French toast, and mimosas. Then we told her our situation: I was just a poor pastor-to-be, and we only had this much budgeted for the food. Without hesitation, Ms. Baker looked at me and said, “Corbin honey,” (that's what she called me the entire time we planned this wedding") “that'll be plenty. I'll have no problem getting all of that. It'll be a great Sunday brunch.” Katelyn and I were elated. We couldn't believe it—we had found the perfect person. We went about the rest of the planning, amazed that it was all coming together. Katelyn planned 90% of the details, but the one thing I put together was our newspaper. I wrote all these articles, and most important to everyone else was the menu: scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, southern-style shrimp and grits, build-your-own croissant sandwiches, delectable donuts (instead of wedding cake), and to top it all off, Ms. Baker's famous French toast. On the day of the wedding, it was brutally hot, but Ms. Baker had a team working at full force to get our Sunday brunch ready. At the start of the reception, people made their way to get their food while Katelyn and I said some hellos. Finally, we walked outside, jumped ahead of the line to get our food, and what we saw shocked us. This supposedly great brunch was nearly gone! Half the guests still needed to go through the line, and certainly more than half the food was gone! I got no eggs, the croissant sandwiches were picked over, I don't recall any shrimp and grits, and worst of all, Ms. Baker's famous French toast was nothing more than French toast sticks, straight out of the box from Gordon's, accompanied by your own syrup cup like you'd get at Hardee's. I was embarrassed, humiliated. It was a tragedy. The food was supposed to be the centerpiece of this brunch. And now all of our friends, who were also planning weddings at the time, were gonna say, “Well, we don't want to be like the Blackmons!” And to be clear, this wasn't Ms. Baker's fault. There is only so much a woman can do with not even $2,000 for all the food and tableware. On the day I was supposed to be the host, to show hospitality, I was found lacking. The groom from our story today was also found lacking, not in food but, even worse, in wine. The very thing he needed most was gone all too early. Talk about a buzzkill. Now, this problem is much easier to preach about to Lutherans than, say, Baptists, who wouldn't see that as a problem at all. But in Jesus' time, for a Jewish wedding reception to run out of wine was one of the worst failures that could happen. The wine wasn't just for a good time, though, as the Psalmist tells us, it does gladden the heart. Wine was the centerpiece of hospitality; when there was plenty of wine, it was a sign of God's blessing. The prophets of old spoke of a time when the vats would overflow and the mountains would drip with sweet wine. In fact, the coming of the Messiah would be marked by an abundance of wine. Conversely, when the vineyards didn't bear fruit and there was no wine to drink, that meant God's blessing had been removed. And if there was ever an occasion to not run out of wine, it was a wedding, because not only would you be lacking in hospitality, but you'd be lacking God's blessing, too. And that's a tragedy.Somehow Mary, Jesus' mother, learns of the problem, and she takes it upon herself to find a solution. Why she felt the need, we are not told. But I like to think that Mary really felt for the couple because they were having the reception she and Joseph likely never had. And the last thing she wanted was for it to be ruined by the lack of wine, and for this newly wedded couple to experience any of the social scrutiny that she undoubtedly did.So Mary found Jesus, and why she thought he could, should, or would fix this problem we don't really know. But she talked Jesus into it. So Jesus had the servants fill the huge stone jars that had gone empty with water. And sometime in between doing that and filling a cup for the steward, the water became 150 gallons of the best wine imaginable.Which is absolutely ridiculous! Why would Jesus make an unfathomable amount of the best possible wine at a time when the guests were already shwammied! They had been partying for days by this point; they couldn't even appreciate such deliciousness. And did they really need that much? Couldn't Jesus have made just enough to last the rest of the reception? And then to top it all off, when the steward tasted the wine and thought the best had been saved for last, the groom got all the credit! Somehow from all of this, the disciples walk away having seen the glory of Jesus and believed in him.We all can empathize with the groom because, at some time or another, we've all been found lacking the very thing we need. As a parent, your jars of patience and attention run dry. In your marriage, your vats of love and forgiveness go empty. Or just as a person in a world with such pain, your cup of concern for your neighbor gets poured out. You will need something, someone besides yourself, to fill you back up because, like the groom and his party, when left to do it all by yourself, the relationship, or the marriage, or your faith, will come to an early end. It is only by the grace of God that comes to us in Jesus that our once-empty jars will be filled back up, and we are given not just what we need but an abundance of the fruit of the Spirit: patience, peace, love, joy, kindness, faithfulness. That's what I love about this story. It reminds us that sometimes in this life, the grace we receive isn't just enough to get us by. No, every once in a while, we experience the grace of God as an abundance of the best thing we've ever had, shared with the people we love most. And it's not just about getting by; it's about the overflow, the ridiculous generosity, and the joy of abundance—a glimpse of God's kingdom breaking into our lives.Where have you experienced God's abundance in your life? Where has God's overflowing grace surprised you, exceeded your expectations, or come just when you were sure you didn't have enough? And how might you share that abundance with someone else— your spouse, your kids, a friend, a stranger—who's jars have all but dried up? And how might we, as Cross of Grace, share our abundance of welcome and hospitality with a community, a world lacking in both? You'll be happy to know no one went hungry at our reception. And I'd like to think the abundance of love and joy more than made up for the food's quality. Months later I talked with one of my good friends about my wedding and told him how embarrassed I was about the food. He turned to me and said, “Are you kidding me? I loved it! French toast sticks are my favorite, and there were so many of them!”Thanks be to God for French toast, good wine, and an abundance of grace. Amen.

During my 16 years as Head Coach at Valparaiso University, I have noticed trends from recruits and their families as they sit across from me in my office. As a high school student you're worried about asking the right questions that will help you make an informed decision about your future. As a coach our jobs are to reassure those worries and answer your questions. Which is where The Uncommon Experience comes into play: hear from real life student-athletes from our program here at Valpo, not just about what makes US special, but advice for you on your recruiting journey. We're here to help, so welcome to the team! On this first episode I'm joined by Aubrey Ramey a recent graduate of our program who transferred to our team in the Spring of 2023. You'll hear Aubrey talk about her initial nervousness about coming in as a late transfer as well as the reasoning behind her transition to Valpo. We'll discuss the importance of culture and atmosphere when you're looking to commit to a program and a little bit about our own culture here at Valpo. And don't forget about the “student” part of student-athlete. A lot of incoming players want to know: just how hard is it to balance success both on and OFF the field? Find out that and more on this episode of The Uncommon Experience.

John 15:9-17[Jesus continued…] “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants* any longer, because the servant* does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.” It was 2012, the evening of Easter. I was a senior in high school. Katelyn had spent the day with me and my family going to church and then for Easter lunch. We had been spending a lot of time together, we both knew there was interest, but we (or perhaps more accurately I) still thought we were in the talking phase, still figuring things out. As we got in the car, I could tell something was wrong, so I asked. And I'm not sure I was ready for the response: so what are we, Cogan? We've gone on dates now, I spend all day with your family, what are we? Ah, the moment had come. Time to define the relationship. I was headed to Valpo in the fall while Katelyn would finish her senior year. Would we continue? Or at least try? What kind of relationship was this? Maybe you've been there and had a similar conversation. Defining the relationship happens in the liminal space between acquaintance and closeness. It is a mark of intimacy and trust that was not in the relationship before. This conversation happens because someone in the relationship feels like they aren't on the same page as the other and there's a need for clarification. Or a fast approaching change spurs on the conversation like graduation or moving. And its usually a difficult conversation to have: it risks vulnerability, rejection, but it also could result in deeper companionship and love. We always hear and maybe even say it ourselves that faith, Christianity is about a relationship with Jesus. And that's true it is, even if you don't often use or feel the most comfortable with that language. But what kind of relationship is it? We have all kinds of relationships: think about the varying kinds with your family, or colleagues, or neighbors, or friends. I have a relationship with my neighbor Jo that consists mostly of friendly waves. I have a relationship with Clive, my son, which also has friendly waves. But these relationships are not the same. So what kind of relationship do we share with Jesus? Luckily, he tells us what kind in this passage today. Toward the end of dinner with his disciples, Jesus thinks it's time to define the relationship. Nothing like a crucifixion to force the conversation. However, Jesus doesn't really do the DTR the way relationship experts and their articles say. Usually, it's not a good idea for one person to state what the relationship was and then proclaim it to be something different. It's something best done or decided on together through Communication, questions, and active listening. Jesus does none of that. Instead, Jesus informs the disciples that their relationship was a master/slave relationship. In the time of Jesus, master/slave relationships were marked by command, ignorance, and obedience. The master said what to do. The slave, not knowing the details of the task he was doing, simply obeyed out of fear of punishment. This according to Jesus was the one-way relationship between him and his disciples. But something changed. “No longer are you slaves”, Jesus says, “you are my friends.” And ever since these words were written, people have been arguing over what they mean. Some say Jesus didn't really make them “friends”. The disciples are still servants, but the good kind, no longer motivated by fear, but motivated out of a desire to make the master happy. But I don't think that's the case. Rather, Jesus' statement is clearly one of manumission, release from slavery, and freedom into a new kind of relationship, namely friendship. And they are friends because of the knowledge Jesus has shared with them. He's told them everything he has received from God about his mission and ministry on earth, his death and resurrection, his plan of redemption for the whole world. And the disciples will remain friends if they do what Jesus commands. Now you might say, “I thought that giving commands was a marker of the old master/slave, one-way relationship. Why can Jesus still give commands to the disciples if they are friends and does it work the other way around? Can the disciples give commands of Jesus? If we think about our own relationships, we know that servitude is not incompatible with friendship. No, it's quite the opposite, they often go hand in hand. And the more intimate the relationship, the more commands are given. If Katelyn, my wife but also my best friend, says the grass is tall, mow the yard, I better do it for the good of the relationship. Notice it wasn't a suggestion “you should mow the yard”, it wasn't a question “Can you mow the yard?” It was a command. One that by the intimacy of our relationship she is able to make and I ought to obey. What does any of this mean for our relationship with Jesus? Jesus has defined the relationship not only for him and his disciples but for us, too. Jesus has made us friends, ones so close that he can give commands and expect us to do them. And the command he gives is this, “love one another I have loved you”. Keep in mind we hear this passage in the season of Easter, meaning we know how Jesus loved. He loved them so much he gave his life for them and us. So when Jesus gives this command to love and sacrifice, he's not asking us to do something that he hasn't already done for us. But what about us commanding Jesus? Yes, I think we have that right. Look at the Psalms or Moses, who give commands and imperatives to God often. Yet, at the same time, Jesus need not obey the same way we do. This friendship between us and Jesus, isn't quite equal. How could it be? However, we do have something to add to the relationship. When Jesus says you are my friends if you keep my commandments, it's an invitation to respond to the love, sacrifice, and friendship Jesus so freely gives to us by having friends. It is a part of our Christian calling then to make and be friends, to love one another, and to make sacrifices for their wellbeing. This kind of friendship, John tells us, gives Glory to God and great joy to me and you.And the reality is, we need friends now more than ever. A report from the surgeon general just last year called loneliness and isolation an epidemic in this country. Americans are spending more time alone than ever before. The Cigna loneliness survey found that nearly 60% of people in the U.S. report feeling lonely on a regular basis. And while our young people are hyper connected virtually, 16-24 year old's reported feeling isolated at a staggering 73%, the highest percentage of any group. And the effects of such loneliness are severe. Dr. Vivek Murthy the surgeon general of the US writes, Loneliness “is far more than just a bad feeling. "It is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and premature death.” Being socially disconnected is nearly as bad for your health as smoking a pack a day, believe it or not. Not to mention the stress it puts on the already torn social fabric rippling across our communities right now too.So take the risk. Make friends and be friends. I'm not saying this is easy, especially the kind of friendship Jesus is calling us to. It's risky, it may require hard conversation, and if we do it right, it means sacrifice. But we are all better because of it.After all, we get by with a little help from our friends. Amen
