Sometimes as dog trainers, we focus much of our attention on the dog, and meeting the needs of that dog in front of us. Though, we can sometimes lose sight of the person on the other end of the leash, and accommodating their needs as well. In this episode of Fresh Bites on The Bitey End of the Dog I have an educational conversation with Abigail Witthauer about effectively working with people with disabilities, and ensuring that success can happen at both ends of the leash. Abigail also gives excellent advice on addressing the issue of ableism in the dog training community, and I hope the conversation about the many issues with ableism, and how it can impact our friends and colleagues, continues beyond this podcast. Irith reached out to me after we recorded with a few more ideas of ways to expose your puppy (or young dog) to more things: - Dress up in costumes to help your puppy get used to people looking different. - Use decorations, etc., to set up a socialization adventure in the yard. - Put different things around your home as socialization adventures indoors (e.g., let the vacuum cleaner sit out, set an automated toy to walk across the floor, etc.). Basically, be creative! Try to introduce them to as much as you can, little by little, and let their reaction be your guide!
