The transformative power of therapy animals with Mary Margaret Callahan of Pet Partners We pet guardians see our companion animals as more than just animals, creatures with four legs roaming around our homes or yards, waiting for their next dinner. Many of us see them as family … some of us, as our children. Still more of us look at them as vital sources of therapy and emotional support. Our best fur friends – or hairless or scaled, whichever you choose – become vital sources of therapy and emotional support. They give us comfort, help us reduce stress and provide us with a sense of stability and responsibility. A small group of pet guardians take their animals' secret powers and share them with others. Today's guest is Mary Margaret Callahan, the chief mission officer at Pet Partners, an organization dedicated to improving human health and wellbeing through the power of therapy animals. The nine different species Pet Partners registers bring joy, comfort and healing to countless individuals in hospitals, schools, senior living facilities and many other environments. Mary Margaret and I dive into the profound impact the volunteer teams have on the humans they visit and Mary Margaret share some insights into the human-animal bond that transcends the guardian-companion relationship. In 1965, a mail-order veterinary supplies business named UPCO was founded in San Diego, California. By 1979, it became Petco, and in 1980, the first Petco store located outside of California opened in Tigard, Oregon. Petco's significant growth began in the late 1980s after acquiring two pet supply chains, WellPoint and the Pet Department. The purchase not only expanded the footprint of the company but more than tripled the brand's store number from 40 to 130. In the early 1990s, Petco opened its first East Coast stores, and by 2001, Petco.com was launched. In 2013, the company opened its first Petco stores in Mexico, with one in Mexico City and another one in Guadalajara. Today, Petco is a successful pet health and wellness company, reflecting nearly six decades of providing thoughtful customer service to “pet parents” and their beloved pets. The brand has created an environment in which customer loyalty is built through the emotional connections nurtured by in-store employees. Mark Johnson, CEO of Loyalty360, spoke with Justin Tichy, Chief Operating Officer for Petco, about growing into a health and wellness company, building emotional loyalty with pet parents, and fostering an environment of engaged employees.

Every day Juanita Mengel, a 67-year-old woman from the state of Ohio, wakes up and puts on her manufactured leg. The device is called a prosthetic. 来自俄亥俄州的 67 岁妇女胡安妮塔·门格尔每天醒来都会穿上她的人造腿。 该装置称为假肢。 Then, Mengel does the same for Lola-Pearl, her colorful five-year-old cat. Lola-Pearl is missing her back left leg. 然后,门格尔对她五岁的色彩斑斓的猫洛拉珀尔做了同样的事情。 洛拉·珀尔失去了她的左后腿。 Mengel has many cats. Most of them have disabilities. But Lola-Pearl is special. She is a therapy cat. And, she and Mengel are partners of a kind. They are among 200 therapy cat teams registered in the United States by the nonprofit group, Pet Partners. The group helps humans and pets alike by setting them up into teams to provide animal-assisted intervention. She said there needs to be more research done in cat therapy. She said that there is a lot of research on other therapy animals like dogs, and many people are surprised to learn that cats can be therapy animals too. 查斯坦·格里芬是一位研究治疗猫效果的研究员。 她说需要对猫疗法进行更多研究。 她说,对于狗等其他治疗动物有很多研究,许多人惊讶地发现猫也可以成为治疗动物。 "They go into a setting and people are like, 'Whoa, there's a cat on a leash. What's happening? It kind of inspires people to connect in a way we haven't traditionally heard talked about in other therapy animal interventions,” Chastain Griffin said. “他们进入一个环境,人们会说,‘哇,有一只猫被皮带拴着。发生了什么事?这激发了人们以一种我们在其他动物干预治疗中从未听说过的方式进行联系,”查斯坦 格里芬说道。 Besides dogs and cats, Pet Partners registers seven other species as therapy animals, including horses, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, birds, mini pigs, and llamas and alpacas. 除了狗和猫之外,Pet Partners 还注册了其他七种动物作为治疗动物,包括马、兔子、老鼠、豚鼠、鸟类、迷你猪、美洲驼和羊驼。Mengel said Lola-Pearl showed signs that she would make a good therapy cat soon after the animal joined her family. Mengel took her new cat to a meeting for amputees. 门格尔说,洛拉·珀尔在加入她的家庭后不久就表现出迹象,表明她将成为一只优秀的治疗猫。 门格尔带着她的新猫去参加截肢者会议。 "She was so good with people I just knew she would be a good therapy cat. People really were attracted to her, too,” Mengel said. “她与人相处得很好,我知道她会成为一只很好的治疗猫。人们也真的被她吸引了,”门格尔说。 Recently people who attended a support group for amputees were able to meet Lola-Pearl. They petted her as she woke up from a rest. On the side of the cat carrier she rode in was a sign: “Therapy Cat” it read. 最近,参加截肢者支持小组的人们能够见到 Lola-Pearl。 当她从休息中醒来时,他们抚摸她。 她乘坐的猫笼一侧有一个牌子:“治疗猫”。Mengel was a traveling nurse when she was in a car accident that almost killed her. Volunteer pet therapy team Nicole and Eleanor love to share their bond to help brighten the day for others. In this 41st episode of Therapy Dog Talk, I spoke with Nicole about her experiences volunteering as a Therapy Dog team in Florida with her 70lb rescue dog Eleanor, what she loves about being registered through Pet Partners, and how she knew Eleanor would enjoy this work. When Nicole's friend told her about registering her bulldog as a Therapy Dog through Alliance of Therapy Dogs, she was inspired but didn't know how to get started and didn't feel that she had the right dog for volunteer pet therapy at the time. After rescuing Eleanor, she noticed her positive interactions with a variety of people and it ocurred to her that she had something special to share with others. After doing some research, Nicole discovered that Pet Partners stood out to her as an organization that she would like to work with and from there progressed through the training and evaluation that they provide to become a registered pet therapy team. She especially liked that the training is for both humans and dogs as it provided additional opportunities for her to bond with her dog.If you're ready to hear about how Nicole and Eleanor volunteer at a local adult daycare facility, let's dive in:In this episode, we discuss …How Nicole helps Eleanor to connect with people who may be timid around large dogsWhy a brush is helpful for them to bring on visits. What Nicole loves about volunteering through Pet Partners.Give it a listen and let me know which part you found the most helpful, then follow their journey at @pettherapy_eleanor.•Interested in getting started as a Therapy Dog but don't know where to begin? Since then she has received a Masters in Social Work with a certificate in Animal-Assisted Social Work which she is putting to use by implementing Animal-Assisted Therapy at the clinic where she works and partners with Kopa to reach their clients in a different way than she could on her own.We spent quite a bit of time talking about what we've learned through our respective programs for mental health professionals, what the training and evaluation is like with Pet Partners, how she helps Kopa to build his confidence, and how she knew that Kopa was the right dog for her to embark on this journey together. If you're ready to hear about Kenzie and Kopa's experience so far, let's dive in:In this episode, we discuss …The differences between two Animal-Assisted Therapy programs for mental health professionals. What the Pet Partners training and evaluation experience was like for them. How Kenzie has helped Kopa to build his confidence with inanimate objects.Give it a listen and let me know which part you found the most helpful, then follow their journey at @kopadoodle.•Interested in getting started as a Therapy Dog but don't know where to begin? Tracy enjoys volunteering with her two Therapy Cats Roger and Sal and wishes that other cat owners would join her.In this 39th episode of Therapy Dog Talk, I spoke with Tracy about what it's like to volunteer with her two Therapy Cats, Roger and Sal through Pet Partners. That's right, hold on to your pups because this week we're talking felines."But Sherrie, this is Therapy DOG Talk!"Don't worry friend, we will get back to dogs next week. While Sunny is my pet that you probably know the best, if you follow her on Instagram you likely know that she has an older cat sister—Matilda, who is 16. What you may not know is that Matilda freelanced as a Therapy Cat for my mom when she was on hospice. She is far too unreliable to do volunteer pet therapy for others; however, my lifelong love of cats did prime me for many of the cat-specific questions for Tracy, such as:"What do you do about their tiny paw knives?"Tracy calls these "murder mittens" or "making biscuits," and it turns out that she doesn't have to worry about them as her cats were raised by dogs and are natural at therapy work. In fact, Roger loves pet therapy work so much that he saves almost all of his purrs for volunteering. Lucky for him, Tracy doesn't take it too personal. In a world full of volunteer Therapy Dogs, Tracy has found that being a Therapy Cat team helps them to stand out in a crowd and to brighten the days of cat lovers in hospice and at the local children's hospital. It's her hope that other cat owners will recognize their feline's potential and help Roger and Sal to spread the joy to those who need it.If you're ready to hear what it's like to volunteer with a cat, or two, let's dive in:In this episode, we discuss …How being raised by a dog made Roger a natural at pet therapy. What the requirements are for volunteering with a cat through Pet Partners. What to look for in a cat to know if they would enjoy, and be suitable for, pet therapy.Give it a listen and let me know which part you found the most helpful, then follow their journey at @therapycatroger and @therapycatsal.•Interested in getting started as a Therapy Dog but don't know where to begin? Teri Wellbrock is the host and producer of the international Healing Place Podcast; writer/blogger; motivational speaker; a registered Pet Partners therapy dog handler of her Labradoodle, Sammie; and founder/director of the volunteer organization, Sammie's Bundles of Hope, benefiting children with trauma history. Teri radiates a contagious energy of joyousness and hope. From her upcoming book:"A little girl, armed with dimples and a compassionate nature, silently maneuvered her way through the wicked shadows toward a beckoning light. She moved with her head bowed in fear, hands clasped in prayer above her head, begging God to make the pain stop, and with God's light shining down upon her, a unicorn shadow was cast on the plaster wall beyond her. Legend has it the unicorn bestowed miracles, magic, and wisdom. The unicorn, therefore, represents opening oneself to infinite possibilities.Unicorn Shadows is the story of my journey through trauma. By age 22 I had survived an attempted drowning by an alcoholic parent; physical abuse at the hands of a parent; sexual molestations by various predators; date rape; gang attack; attempted rape by a police officer; bank robbery in which a gun was held to my head and my co-worker was stabbed 3 times with a hunting knife; and a second bank robbery in which my co-worker was shot and murdered and I found myself face-to-face with an armed gunman. Those are merely the highlights. It is a story of faith, of finding peace amidst the chaos, of believing in the miracle of hope. The unicorn shadow represents the pain of the prayer while simultaneously portraying the hope of the miracle within.TERI AND I DISCUSS:What is your "story of hope" - personal trauma story? How has awareness of the impact of emotional abandonment and co-dependent relationships impacted your healing journey? Explain the power of friendship and soul connection with others. Why is the "I get it" (#metoo ) connection so powerful. Sharing our stories can provide a release, but also a bond with others. How has that impacted your own healing journey and helped others to heal in the process? What strategies have you added to your own coping skills toolbox and which are your favorite go-to grounding modalities? What is your mission, dream, goal in your soul work? Explain the benefits of exposing our vulnerabilities with others. If you could reach as many people in the world as possible with your message of hope, who would you want your audience to be?What are your favorite go-to coping strategies?Send audience to:https://teriwellbrock.com/My website is where most interested listeners can find out more about me and my soul work.----------------------------------POST A REVIEWGUEST BOOKINGS CLICK HEREFollow me on Social MediaNew Town Big Dreams podcast on FacebookInstagramLinkedinLuke Menkes Kelowna RealtorMy Personal Facebook PageSupport the show (https://paypal.me/lukemenkes)

America's Veterinarian, Dr. Marty Becker and his wife Theresa, join Mandy in the studio to talk about Fear Free Vet and Shelter practices, vet suicide, and other animal welfare topics. Dr. Marty Becker, “America’s Veterinarian,” has spent his life working toward better health for pets and the people who love them. In recent years, “taking the ‘pet’ out of ‘petrified’” and ensuring every pet and pet owner can experience a Fear Free veterinary visit has been his area of greatest commitment and dedication, culminating in the launch of Fear Free certification for veterinary and pet professionals in March of 2016. This was followed by a website for pet owners, FearFreeHappyHomes.com, and in 2019, by FearFreeShelters.com, which provides free training for all staff and volunteers of animal shelters, rescue groups, and animal welfare organizations. Dr. Becker was the resident veterinary contributor on "Good Morning America" for 17 years. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the American Humane Association as well as its Chief Veterinary Correspondent, a founding member of Core Team Oz for "The Dr. Oz Show," a member of the Dr. Oz Medical Advisory Panel, and a Today contributor. Doodles are often sought out because they are marketed as confident, friendly and mild mannered dogs--who also don't shed. However, because doodles are a mixed breed, these characteristics can't be guaranteed. And many other breeds and mixes can be excellent therapy dogs. In this episode I interviewed a Pet Partner representative so you can learn all there is to know about the work that therapy dogs do. Pet Partners is the largest and most prestigious non-profit registering therapy dogs and other therapy animal pets. Special Guest: Elizabeth Van Every.
TITLE After learning she was an HSP from her therapist, Ranielle talks about what she got from the Online HSP group that she couldn’t get from therapy GUEST Ranielle EPISODE OVERVIEW Ranielle’s therapist introduced her the trait of being a Highly Sensitive Person, but it wasn’t until Ranielle took the Online HSP Course that she began to actively practice embracing the traits of being an HSP. Ranielle shares what she was able to get from the Course that she couldn’t get in therapy (yet it was very compatible with therapy). Even though her group was late in the evening, Ranielle talks about feeling restored every week because of what she received during group. Ranielle talks about her hesitation to spend money on the Course, and that it felt scary to join when she didn’t know anyone else in the group, and how it was going to be. Ranielle’s group is continuing to meet weekly online on their own. HIGHLIGHTS Ranielle wanted support in making a major life transition The HSP Online Course helped Ranielle bridge the gap from making the decision through executing it Ranielle was able to talk out things that were going on in her head She had things reflected back to her She realized she wasn’t being difficult or crazy; it was part of an HSP process The information about her trait and the support from the group helped Ranielle feel confident in her decision Group members would see their traits show up in others, and they had so much compassion for the other person, which lead to self-compassion It felt nice to not feel alone due to feeling isolated since it felt like no one understood It was really validating to experience others who experienced similar things It eased the sense of being alone, and it felt great to find a group of others that have similar values Ranielle received negative messaging about her HSP traits and it was presented as a way that it was HER problem that needed fixing, and she didn’t know how to fix it Ranielle realized there was nothing to be fixed. She needed to be understood and known and she needed self-compassion Ranielle says she had felt broken in the past, and realized that wasn’t the case Ranielle learned how to nurture herself instead of beating herself down Ranielle’s therapist told her about being a Highly Sensitive Person Ranielle talks about being in therapy while taking the Online HSP Course Having a larger group of HSPs sharing their experiences created a different kind of mirroring and reflection Hearing about how other HSPs navigated through life provided something that Ranielle didn’t get in therapy Therapy and the Online HSP Course was very complimentary Being in a group of other HSPs who had no investment in making Ranielle feel better was validating. She heard what her therapist had said, but to hear it from others was very impactful There was a level of connected support in this group There wasn’t a common denominator (job, socioeconomic status, level of education, gender) to explain why the groups were so cohesive Ranielle felt more confident setting boundaries, asking for what she needs, and being more open and honest about her feelings, and being more willing to talk about challenges in relationships The Course opened up a new language for her Ranielle had resistance to spending money on the Course Being in a group of other HSPs created energy for Ranielle because this was a place where she felt restored Ranielle felt listened to, supported in the group—it’s a new level of self-care that’s worth trying If you’re on the fence about it, I’d encourage others to take the leap of faith and take it There is a money-back guarantee if you take the Course (please see specifics about this) Ranielle talks about how scary it was to join without knowing who would be in the group, or how it would go Just being in a group of other HSPs is enough to build a base to create an amazing experience After the first group, that feeling of fear about the structure and the unknown disappeared The group members seemed to be in tune with turn-taking and staying on track so no one felt talked over or that they didn’t get a chance to share The greatest thing about the Course was how much everyone was encouraged to take care of themselves (to miss a class, to not share, to eat, to turn off video, to observe—for the introverts) Introverts may need more time to process, and there was no pressure for anyone to share if they didn’t want to This Course is about figuring out what works for you, and to honor it You just have to show up as you, and not as someone else When we take a chance, things often work out much better than we anticipate Ranielle feels like a more enlightened HSP and feels ready to go out into the world GUEST BIO Ranielle is a Pacific Northwest native, dedicated cat and dog guardian, and is becoming a more enlightened & empowered HSP. She and her dog, Calamity Jane, have been a Pet Partners therapy team since 2015, and participate in read-to-dog programs as well as high school, college, and workplace stress release clinics. After 20 years in the entertainment industry, Ranielle is whole-heartedly pursuing her passion for dogs by working in a doggy daycare with an eye to becoming a dog trainer and small business owner. PODCAST HOST Patricia Young hosts the podcast Unapologetically Sensitive, and works with Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) helping them to understand their HSP traits, and turning their perceived shortcomings into superpowers. Patricia is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and is passionate about providing education to help HSPs and non-HSPs understand and truly appreciate the amazing gifts they have to offer. TITLE Dog Whisperer Liz Murdoch Talks to My Dog Gracie, Who Has a Message for the Highly Sensitive Person, aka HSP GUEST Liz Murdoch EPISODE OVERVIEW Liz Murdoch, Dog Whisperer, and host of the podcast Talking With The Dogs, talks with my dog Gracie. Liz (and Gracie) help me understand some behaviors that have confused me. I had some expectations about what Gracie would say, and I needed time to process this interview. Liz had some spot-on insights, and at the end of interview I share how this has impacted our family. I worry about how I will manage when Gracie eventually dies, and Gracie had a message for me about that, and Liz provides a reassuring perspective about dogs that have crossed over. HIGHLIGHTS My expectations about what I thought Gracie would say, impacted this episode I talk about this a bit in the beginning, and more at the end of the episode Liz was able to communicate with animals when she was very young Liz talks about how she became involved in animal communication as she got older Liz has trained a dog when she was a child, and she won a blue ribbon amongst adults who were competing Liz had a car accident with resulting in a head injury, and she wanted train a therapy dog to help other people She was able to have her dog certified as a Therapy Dog with Pet Partners, which is not easy to do Liz only saw a picture of Gracie, and I held her up to camera on my laptop, but other than that, she had NO information about Gracie Liz talks to Gracie to find out what she likes Gracie communicates to me about her dog food (which is a special diet since she’s allergic to most foods) Gracie would like to talk about cats if she had a podcast, and Gracie LOVES cats, but they don’t know she wouldn’t harm a fly Gracie gives some information initially that we circle back to that has to do with how my grown son interacts with her (and she doesn’t like it) At the end of the interview, I talk about what has happened re: how my son now interacts with Gracie Liz identifies one of Gracie’s favorite things to play with Gracie tells Liz what she prefers in the home in terms of activity and movement Liz identifies that Gracie doesn’t see well and that it impacts her thinking (she also has seizures, and she’s blind—and only has one eye) Liz does a body scan on Gracie and finds something I believe she had, but the vet didn’t see it Liz talks about what she’s learned from dogs that have crossed over, and I was surprised (and relieved/pleased) to hear this Gracie had a message for me about my worry about her dying (and it’s a very mindful message) Liz mentions shampoo (the groomer just used a different shampoo, which led to a very expensive vet bill with antibiotics and all kinds of testing due to the reaction she had) I ask why Gracie doesn’t bark when she gets stuck somewhere or the door is closed, and her answer surprises me GUEST BIO Liz Murdoch has been a true dog whisperer for most of her life. She first discovered this special skill when she was in kindergarten, and then further honed it throughout her life, winning awards in dog training and becoming certified to do animal assisted therapy with patients of all ages. A veteran volunteer with rescue organizations, Liz is happiest when translating what dogs and other animals want their people to know. She hosts the podcast, Talking with the dogs! and is available for private chat sessions, special events, and speaking engagements. Do you know the difference between a therapy animal and a service animal? Most people use these two terms interchangeably, but they are actually two very different things. Therapy animals provide physiological and psychological therapy to people other than their owners. Service animals help their owners perform tasks that the owner cannot do on their own. What types of animals can be therapy animals? What tasks do they perform, and what environments can they work in? In this week’s episode, I’m speaking with Elisabeth Van Every, the Communications and Outreach Coordinator for Pet Partners. Pet Partners is the nation’s largest and most prestigious nonprofit organization that registers handlers of therapy animals.
Interview! Michele Tilford, Cat-Assisted Therapy Advocate Michele Tilford has over five years of experience as a cat-assisted therapy handler—but when she first became interested in cat-assisted therapy, the only programs she could find were for dogs. Eventually she connected up with a service dog trainer who also happened to be a Ragdoll breeder. The woman agreed to help Michele train one of her own kittens, later adopted by Michele, and the rest is history. Michele explains that one of the biggest keys in deciding whether or not your cat might be a good therapy cat is his or her personality. A therapy cat should ideally be calm, curious and outgoing. The cat can then be trained to become comfortable with unfamiliar surroundings and with wearing a harness, being in a carrier, and traveling. There are three different groups of therapy animals, Michele explains. One is what are called emotional support or comfort animals. These can be any kind of animal and are generally just a personal pet that receives no training. All that is needed to certify a comfort animal is generally a doctor’s note. An animal-assisted therapy animal is one that has some basic training and works as part of a human-animal team. Cats in this category—like Michele’s cat Kokoro—need to be able to understand a couple of commands, be leash and carrier trained, and be comfortable with loud noises and being touched. The third category is service animals. These are highly trained animals who are trained to assist people with specific tasks. Right now in the United States, only dogs and miniature horses can be registered as service animals. Michele explains that many other countries use cat-assisted therapy far more than we do here in the United States, where cats still seem to be maligned as therapy animals. Michele and others are working hard to change that mindset, however, by bringing cats to a variety of institutions like retirement homes, schools, and even libraries, where cats assist with reading programs for kids. Michele is a firm believer that cats can bring a huge benefit to the people they visit! If you are interested in training your cat as a therapy cat, Michele encourages people to look up Love on a Leash and Pet Partners to check out their requirements for certification. Any cat can be a therapy cat; they don’t need to be purebred or have any extraordinary characteristics. In fact, Michele states that 98% of the therapy cats she knows were rescued from shelters! Getting your cat certified does require a bit of commitment, but Michele assures those interested that you will get every bit as much from the experience as the people you and your cat visit! To learn more, visit facebook.com/TherapyCats, or you can join the invite-only Facebook that Michele helped found at facebook.com/groups/TherapyCats.of.the.world.
