Pets are inspirational and offer divine inspiration and creativity. In this episode, Cathy talks with Labrador Retrievers, Sanchez the Yellow Lab (In Spirit), and Gina the Black Lab about how they inspired their person, Lisa Spector, to use her Juilliard degree to play classical music for pets to relieve their anxiety and stress. Cathy met Lisa 20 years ago when she brought her 4-month-old Guide Dog for the Blind puppy, Sanchez to one of my Animal Communication classes. Since then, Lisa has become a long-time client, student and friend. Sanchez and Gina are Guide Dogs for the Blind career change dogs, meaning they were not suitable to be a guide dogs. Instead, they became Lisa's dogs and her animal muses. Sanchez's anxiety led Lisa to discover that playing classical piano music at a slow pace calmed pet anxiety. With Sanchez as her inspiration, Lisa co-founded Through a Dog's Ear and was the pianist on the music series. Her music is backed by science and prescribed by veterinarians to help with separation anxiety, sound phobias, excessive barking, hyperactivity, and crate training. Her music is played in animal shelters worldwide, vet clinics and pet households. Gina is the Chief Zen Officer of MyZenPet.com where Lisa does a podcast and offers concerts for pets. You can also download or stream her album, Dog Gone Calm, Vol. 1.

Emily Harman, the host of Onward Podcast, interviews Lisa Spector. Dog and cat lovers call Lisa The Pet Calming Maestro. Music lovers know her as the heart-centered woman who inspires through music and story. Colleagues call her The Pianopreneur. From the very first moment she heard her mother play piano when she was seven, Lisa’s fingers were a magnet to the keys. A bad fall in June of 2017 shattered Lisa’s right hand and inspired her to find another voice. After three surgeries for seven complicated fractures, she dove into music for left hand only. It wasn’t easy, emotionally or physically. Listen to this episode and learn how Lisa realized it only appeared music came from her hands. She really makes music with her heart.  Episode Highlights:  Emily Harman introduces Lisa Spector. Lisa Spector shares how she crushed her right hand in a bizarre fall.    What is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)? What caused Lisa to fire her first physical therapist? It is important to advocate for yourself. Lisa shares what first came to her mind when she fell.  What made Lisa feel that injuring her hand was a blessing in disguise?  Could Lisa tell before her accident that the universe was trying to make her aware of something? The universe whispers at first and then gets louder and louder until we pay attention. Lisa talks about left-handed pianists.  What did it take for Lisa to get into The Juilliard School and to graduate?  How did she first start playing the piano?  What did Lisa do after she graduated from Julliard?   Lisa tells a story about being chosen to play for the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. How has Lisa addressed her difficult times?  Lisa said that her recovery was 80-90% mental.  What is required for Lisa Spector to use her right hand for playing piano?  What does an agility dog do?     3 Key Points: Lisa Spector developed a rare neurological disorder called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) that often affects middle-aged women who have had trauma to their hand or their foot.  Lisa Spector is writing a memoir book called Left-Hand Lemonaid: A Musician’s Journey of Turning Tragedy into Triumph. You never know how the universe is going to deliver you gifts in what seems like tragedies at the time.     Tweetable Quotes: “I would say, whether it is a musical instrument, whether its a sport, whether it is anything else in life you love that brings you joy. No matter what set-backs you’ve had, there is always a way to do that thing that you love.” – Lisa Spector “I realized that, thank God that it was only my hand. Because if it hadn’t been my hand, it would have been something that I think could have killed me.” – Lisa Spector “The best things in life happen by accident.” – Lisa Spector   Resources Mentioned: Lisa Spector: Linkedin | Facebook | Instagram | Youtube  lisaspector.com lisaspector.com/play-on Through a Dog’s Ear, music for pet anxiety, launched on The CBS Early Show.  Gina, Lisa’s 10-year-old Lab, earned her PDCH (Performance Dog Championship) with a 1st place Snooker run. Young children who have experienced traumatic events may exhibit problems with speech-language development, sleep disturbances or negative food behaviors. In addition, research has shown that children who experience adversity are more likely to adapt unhealthy coping mechanisms.  Since 2013, the Beyond Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Clinic at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, has cared for more than 200 children who have experienced traumatic events in their early lives. Lisa Spector, MD is here to explain how the program offers access to a unique multidisciplinary team approach found at only a handful of hospitals across the nation.

This week on Animal Instinct, host Celia Kutcher is delving into the interesting topic of music for animals. Lisa Spector is a concert pianist, Juilliard graduate, and canine music expert. By combining her passion for music with her love of dogs, she co-created Through a Dog’s Ear, the first music clinically demonstrated to relieve anxiety issues in dogs. Lisa heads the Through a Dog’s Ear “Music in Shelters” program, a project inspired by her volunteer work in shelters. Her piano playing is currently played in over 1,500 shelters worldwide, where it is helping increase adoption rates. In addition to calming the dogs, it helps create a quieter atmosphere, encouraging visitors to stay longer and adoption rates to increase. The donated music is also sent home with adopters and their new forever dogs. Explaining to Celia how she came to research and compose music that has been proven to calm dogs, she sheds a great deal of light on how much more in tune dogs are to sounds and humans’ reactions to sounds. Tune in to learn all about different types of listening! This program was brought to you by Heritage Foods USA. “I’ve always noticed that they [dogs] gravitate toward the piano… and particularly, I noticed the calming effect.” [3:00] “In the shelter environment it’s classical music that helps calms dogs.” [5:30] “Any anxiety issue has to do with stress.” [11:55] —Lisa Spector on Animal Instinct
