Podcast Synopsis In this insightful episode of the Animal Training Academy Podcast, Dr. Keira Moore returns for part two of our thought-provoking discussion on behavior analysis, radical behaviorism, and the intersection of science and practice in both human and animal training. With her extensive background as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA-D) and KPA-CTP certified dog trainer, Keira shares her expertise on how we can stay conceptually systematic, follow the science, and ask the right questions to refine our training approaches. Throughout this episode, we dive into five key strategies for grounding training in behavioral science, including: ✅ Understanding radical behaviorism and why it's a game-changer for ethical training ✅ The importance of following the science and identifying credible sources of knowledge ✅ Why being conceptually systematic can help trainers avoid unnecessary fluff in their methods ✅ Asking critical questions to distinguish evidence-based practices from trendy but unproven techniques ✅ The power of community and lifelong learning to enhance training effectiveness Keira's approach is both practical and thought-provoking, offering valuable takeaways for dog trainers, behavior consultants, and animal caregivers alike. Whether you're new to behavior analysis or a seasoned professional, this conversation will challenge the way you think about training and empower you to make more informed, science-based decisions.
We often talk about dogs being “man's best friend,” but very seldom do we stop to ask, “Am I my dog's best friend?” Changing the way we think about our relationship can change the way we interact with our dogs, and has the potential to make our friendships with them even deeper and more meaningful. This is the philosophy that my guest today brings to her training. Sarah Rutten sees dog training as being less about training the dog and more about training the human to understand and interact with the dog better. She's even written a book, The Canine Perspective, to help humans understand where their canine companions are coming from a little bit better. She joined me today all the way from Australia to talk about burnout, special “heart dogs,” and doing hard things. With today's twenty-four hour news cycle, coupled with the rise of social media, we often feel as though we are constantly being bombarded with headlines, most of them negative. It can be hard to keep any kind of positive attitude at all as we are perpetually reminded of all the things that are wrong in the world. Before long, we find ourselves feeling stuck and hopeless. Vet tech and behavior specialist Tabitha Kucera knows those feelings of depression and hopelessness, but she also knows the immense power of having a PMA--positive mental attitude--especially when things are hard. That doesn't mean falling into toxic positivity, but instead finding the good where it is, recognizing what is in your power to do, and learning to be kind to yourself. Tune in as we discuss the value of finding and providing mentorship, learning to understand yourself, and the importance of knowing your own worth. A lot of dog trainers have come on the show, but most of them didn't start out wanting to be dog trainers, or even realize that was an option until later in life. Today, however, the script is flipped as I'm joined for perhaps the first time by a dog trainer who actually grew up wanting to be a dog trainer! Of course, life still had plenty of surprises in store for trainer Kari Joly, and despite being the thing she wanted to be as a kid, it wasn't a straight path to get there, nor does it look exactly like she thought it would. Join us today as she shares how she went from wanting to train guide dogs to helping train family dogs, as well as a discussion about confidence, humility, and the importance of celebrating the small wins. Pet professionals, by and large, are giving people. We pour ourselves out in service to animals and their owners, often to the point of forgetting to take care of ourselves (or only giving ourselves enough care that we can keep helping others). All too often, this leads to exhaustion and burnout. My guest today wants pet professionals to know that you are worthy of having a good life. Liz Ford has learned in her years of shelter work and dog training that sometimes it's all right to fill your cup just for yourself, and not simply so you can keep serving others. She joined me today for a thought-provoking conversation about learning more, doing better, and not allowing yourself to be blinded by negativity bias. In this episode, Carm and I talk about conflict in the dog breeding world - and in dog training, human politics, and other parts of life. Why are we as humans so likely to fall into conflict with others? Why is it so hard to convince others of your viewpoint when you're in conflict with them? How can we do things differently so we can start having meaningful conversations with others in which we and they are able to think deeply about why we believe what we believe? Many every day movements using every day surroundings can become exercise that can profoundly impact your dog's performance, quality of life, and longevity. Bobbie Lyons, CCFT, KPA CTP, Cert CF, describes just how easy it can be. However, we need to first observe what our dog is doing repetitively - the patterns of posture and movement that may not be ideal and contribute to injury - and then know what to do to address these issues. Contrary to popular belief, increasing your pet's confidence, building their strength, enhancing their balance, and probably most importantly, cluing them into where their feet are, especially those hind feet, can take as little as 15 minutes 3 times per week. This week on the Uncharted Podcast, practice management geek Stephanie Goss is joined by special guest, Amanda Schwarzwalder, CVPM, RVT, KPA CTP, VTS (Behavior). When Stephanie saw this letter in the mailbag, Amanda was the first person who came to mind to tackle this topic with. For over 20 years Amanda has worked as a veterinary technician in various capacities. Her interest in behavior led her to joining The Behavior Clinic in 2009. A nationally recognized speaker in veterinary behavior and Fear FreeTM Approved Speaker, Amanda enjoys teaching veterinary team members how to implement and develop behavior care as a team. As the Practice Manager, Amanda is often behind the scenes handling the day to day business of keeping TBC running, supporting our referring veterinarians, and working with the TBC team to assist our clients and their pets. With such a well-rounded resume, it makes perfect sense that Amanda has a whole alphabet soup behind her name. Stephanie and Amanda are taking on an email from our mailbag that came to us from a technician in training who is worried about their comfort level with animals. While this might seem strange to some people in veterinary medicine who are lovers of ALL creatures great and small, Amanda and Stephanie talk through the concerns from a practical, clinical and personal level because there is a lot to this seemingly simple concern. We're not brushing it off, let's get into this... LINKS Are you a practice owner or a practice manager? Never underestimate the impact of a powerful partnership and DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN US LIVE IN GREENVILLE... The Wright Brothers. Venus and Serena. Han Solo and Chewbacca. Okay, that last one was (far) far-fetched… but there's no denying that all of these rockstar duos made a lasting impression on us. They innovated, discovered, experimented, and explored the unknown, all to leave the world a bit better than they found it. Veterinary practice leaders can form powerful partnerships just like these. Collaboration in leadership might sound simple, but for any of you that do it on a regular basis, you know it can be anything but easy! Every partnership (like every veterinary practice) is unique and faces very specific challenges. To be successful, you must identify your strengths and weaknesses as individuals and as a pair. By working to further your skills within your respective role, then coming together to work collaboratively with your partner, you can quickly break problems down into manageable pieces and move forward as a team. Here's your chance to unravel this complex topic with us and our esteemed guests, Dr. Linda Randall, a seasoned veterinarian, and Dr. Kathie Nurena, a medical doctor with a wealth of knowledge. Together, we'll explore the multifaceted nature of trauma, the invisible scars it leaves, and how understanding it as a 'wound' can illuminate its impact. The Aggression in Dogs ConferenceThe Bitey End of the Dog Bonus EpisodesThe Aggression in Dogs Master Course and Expert Webinar Bundle --- LIMITED TIME SPECIAL OFFERABOUT LINDA:Linda Randall, DVM is a Board Certified Companion Animal Veterinarian focused on the behavioral aspects of training in dog sports. And, perhaps, some of the theories in the medical literature may be useful to animal trainers.Support the show
Whether we like it or not, fear is a powerful force in our lives- fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of losing the people and things that are important to us. Even as much of the animal world shifts to a “fear free” mindset when it comes to training and interacting with animals, many of us still struggle to let go of our own fears. Too often, that fear keeps us trapped in uncomfortable and painful situations, or prevents us from doing things we love or aspire to. Mikkel Becker, the lead animal trainer at Fear Free Pets, came on the show today to talk about overcoming the fears that hold us back and keep us from living full and joyful lives. Join us as we discuss giving yourself grace, granting yourself permission to do things, and getting career advice from Diane Sawyer. https://colleenpelar.com/113

EPISODE NOTES: Why Does My Cat Do That? Part 3: Interactions
Linda Randall, DVM, KPA-CTP, LLA, TagTeach Level 3 Owner: One Smart Dog, Seville OH, USA Linda sold her veterinary hospital in 2019, where she had practiced as an ABVP Board Certified Diplomate, Companion Animals, for 20 years, and also worked with exotics. She then opened One Smart Dog, a full-service dog training facility, the month Ohio shut down for the pandemic in 2020, which, she says, was “exciting”. Linda has been engaged in dog sports, obedience, agility, and field trials with her Flat Coated Retrievers, and sheep herding, agility, and Scent with her Border Collies. Her passion for behavior grew from learning about training from a variety of trainers (she is a cross-over trainer) and realizing that although all the trainers she worked with felt they had a method that worked, only a few took the time to develop insight into why animals did what they did, or had the curiosity needed to want to understand what function their behavior had. Most had a “top-down” method of working with dogs which, the more she learned about the science of behavior, she found uncomfortable. And then: a friend came back from one of the first clicker conferences and talked about clicker training. Linda couldn't get enough information about it. She started attending positive reinforcement conferences such as Clicker Expo and taking classes (Living and Learning With Animals is a favorite!) and joining intentional R+ communities such as the Animal Training Academy. Linda works hard to maintain a positive presence in her daily interactions with friends, clients, students, and instructors. It can be difficult to run a full-service dog training facility, maintain her relief veterinary business and find time to do webinars and conferences, but Linda feels strongly the effort is worth it. She especially finds joy in working with kids who want to learn to train their dogs. With their increased ability at a young age to have excellent hand-eye coordination (hello cellphones and video games!), kids make wonderful, compassionate trainers. She believes that engaging with another species and working in age-appropriate spaces helps develop compassion for others and encourages acceptance of diversity. Linda has produced a 4-hour series on Kids, Race, and Positive Reinforcement for the Heart Album and, along with her co-host Kathie Nurena, MD, KPA-CTP, NACSW Cert. Instructor, Linda has spoken at The Convergence of Human Behavior, Animal Training, and Technology (CHATT) conference, The Lemonade Conference, and is speaking this fall at APDT. Linda and Kathie discuss Trauma Informed and Trauma Assumed Care in animals and people, with an emphasis on the intersection of animal training, human caregivers, and behavior. As a Black woman in the majority white professions of veterinary medicine and dog training, Linda has had experiences that have been life-changing and soul-searching at the same time. She is inspired to support others who have ventured into these worlds and to seek a deeper understanding of why we do what we do and why we believe what we believe. Behavior can help, and it can hurt, both the giver and the receiver. In a world of increasing compartmentalization of groups, and anger directed towards those considered “other”, she hopes encouraging a behavioral view and positive reinforcement interactions will, in some small, but tangible way, make a difference. As Linda says: we have to try. For links visit here >>> https://atamember.com/2023/07/06/linda-randall/

Leash reactivity (lunging and barking at dogs and people) is one of the most common issues people come to us for help with, and so many of our clients experience a ton of judgment and disparaging comments from other dog owners when out on walks. People ASSUME things about them and about their dog, based on that reactivity; "What's Wrong with that dog?" or "Why does their owner allow them to keep doing that?", or "They should really get some training". In this episode we discuss why these assumptions can be exceedingly incorrect, and how you (with your non-reactive dog) may be contributing to the issue.Whether you have a leash reactive dog or not, this episode is for you.Guests:- Ella Tirado (she/her/hers) CPDT-KA is a Certified Trainer at INSTINCT Hudson Valley.- Jessica Wheatcraft (she/her/hers) CDBC, Founder of INSTINCT San Diego- Jenna Slutzky (she/her/hers) KPA-CTP is a Certified Trainer with INSTINCT Nashville.Hosts Brian Burton (he/him/his) and Sarah Fraser (she/her/hers) are Co-Founders and Co-CEOs of INSTINCT Dog Behavior & Training. “They blinded me with science!” Many have had the experience of entering a session, excited to impart all the behavior analytic knowledge, only to watch the audience's eyes glaze over. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand they've tuned out completely. The reality is, people go to professionals to get solutions for their problems, they don't want a science class. It's on the trainer to determine how to translate from technical jargon to a language that makes sense to the learner. And in this LIVE talk we're going to talk about these translations and not just when working with humans, but also with animals! Our guest, Andrew Taylor-Baptiste, KPA CTP, Head Trainer at Operant Animal Training, has been honing this skill throughout his career, from working with dolphins and manta rays, to teaching puppies and their parents to live in harmony. He'll discuss how he has applied behavioural techniques across a wide variety of settings and animals, along with the importance of exploring and learning about the species- communication methods, sleep and wake cycles, social behaviors are just some areas of curiosity. Knowing the organism inside and out can help make for efficient and successful training programs. Learning Objectives: 1. Examine the idea of translating the science of behavior programs into language that our learner understands. 2. Describe the importance of learning the communication system of the learner when building new skills and maintaining current repertoires. 3. Describe ways to provide choices throughout training and the short- and long-term value of choices. Take Aways- your bite-sized educational noms - When people seek out help from professionals, they are seeking solutions, not a science class. Instructors should actively translate and reword information in such a way that the learner understands. This doesn't mean that the scientific principles can't and shouldn't be taught! It means that instructors need to shape up the verbal and physical behaviors in their learners; set up the environment and learning for success. - Animal training involves not only learning the communication and learning styles of the human participant but also the unique communication style of the animal, including their breed and specicies characteristics. It's valuable to research what the animal's natural inclinations and responses are and incorporate that into training to ensure success. - Easy choices to provide- what the learner is working for (natural or contrived reinforcement), where the learner wants to work, when the session is over. Providing choices helps to establish trust and rapport between the learner and instructor. Today's Topic: Leash reactivity, or reactivity in general, is one of the top dog behavioral issues that clients come to us for, and for good reason: here, in Denver, we're (almost) ALWAYS outside...and with our dogs. So, for anyone who expects their outings with their dog to be fun, pleasant and peaceful experiences, they may quickly find themselves seeking behavioral solutions for their dog's reactive behaviors, as a dog that exhibits reactive behaviors can make those outings a tad less fun, a bit less pleasant, and a lot less peaceful. That's why we've we've invited our first return guest, certified professional dog trainer, the founder of Perfect Pals Dog Training, and the co-creator of the most comprehensive digital dog training course on the subject, "Help! My Dog Is Reactive On Leash!", Erin Gianella, KPA CTP, to the pod, to discuss what reactivity is, the dangers of labeling your dog as reactive, practical management solutions you can use with your reactive dog today, and much much more!Guest Bio: Erin Gianella's journey to become a dog trainer began in 2014 when she noticed her own dog, Gus, having separation anxiety issues. She became more and more curious and passionate that she decided to leave the corporate world and learn as much as she could about being a dog trainer. Erin studied at the Karen Pryor Academy and became a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner. Erin started Perfect Pals Dog Training in 2021 based in Denver, CO. She offers private training using positive reinforcement, science based methods. Along with training, Erin also incorporates enrichment and management into the training plan to ensure all needs are being met. To celebrate one whole year of Make It Click (MIC was started in September of 2021!) we are releasing two of our favorite episodes that were previously only available on Patreon! When you hear a dog described as "shy", what does that mean for you? On this episode, I am joined by Ali Sutch, KPA CTP and owner of Up to Snuff dog training in California. Ali offers insight about what the label "shy baby" means for dogs, how that descriptor can be either a help or a hindrance, and why it's valuable to bring extra compassion to our discussions about shy dogs. We also discuss what skills might be helpful for shy dogs to help them navigate the world more comfortably, plus knowledge and skills that the human guardians of shy dogs can benefit from. Enjoy! Have you ever lived with or worked with dogs that are fighting in the same home? Also known as intra-household dog to dog aggression, these can be incredibly stressful cases for all involved because the dogs are living under one roof together, so it can feel like you never can get a moment of not worrying about when the next fight might happen. In this episode of Fresh Bites on The Bitey End of the Dog, I chat with the wonderful duo of Christina Young and Jade Zwingli from the Legion of Dogs which is an educational initiative all about multi-dog living. We discuss understanding dog to dog aggression in the home, what potential outcomes can be, and how to avoid many conflicts that can happen with dogs living together. On this episode I have four people who have different perspectives on dogs and their owners. They talked about the expectations we have of dogs and whether they are reasonable; the limits of training to manage dogs in the wrong environments; and the ethical dilemma of "dog keeping" in an increasingly urban world. We also touched on how our relationships and expectations of dogs as pets are influenced by larger social issues. My guests are: Jacqueline George, MA, who works with people seeking puppies to help match them to the right breeder, shelter, or rescue; Sammy Hyde, KPA-CTP, CPDT-KA, UW-AAB, a dog trainer in the Boston area; and Laura Sharkey, PhD, KPA-CTP and Carolyn Kelly, MSN, RN, the founders of the Copilot Pet Dog Breeding Cooperative, both of whom have experience breeding dogs for pet homes. These four women have a lot of fascinating experience and insights and I hope you enjoy their conversation as much as I did.

Collaboration. It's a key part of being an ethical dog trainer, veterinary, shelter, or daycare worker. One of the best ways to uphold this standard is to seek help and advice from those who have more experience and education than us. This is where receiving criticism comes in. It can be difficult and this week, I will be discussing the importance of taking criticism and why it is a life skill with Yona Rapport. “As a community growing each year, it's important that we all uphold similar standards of practice. There is a balance to be had between rigid but flexible, steadfast but open to improvement, respecting the ‘experts' but always thinking critically so that we never find ourselves blindly following this guru or that. We cannot let perfection be the enemy of the good; almost all progress graphs have hills and valleys from day to day. Learning is messy because humans are messy. Our job is to seek people who help us to zoom out on that graph and verify the steady up-trend of progress over time.” – Yona Rapport Yona Rappaport, CPDT-KA, KPA-CTPYona is the owner and operator of Science at Play Dog Training, Behavior and Gear, Health Department Behavior Technician at Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA, social media manager for Humane Dog Training Advocates and Shelter Playgroup Alliance volunteer. This week pet trainer Mikkel Becker shares how she combined her passion for animals and serving people to create a business that teaches both pets and people how to communicate and understand fear, anxiety, and emotional issues. Listen in as we break down the pressures of continuing a family legacy, carving your own path through your passions, and why pets and their owners have more in common than you might think. “Pets communicate continually with us is through their body language. We need to not punish our pet for telling us how they feel, but give them coping strategies. Our mental and emotional health are very similar.” – Mikkel Becker About Mikkel: Mikkel Becker is a certified trainer, dog behavior counselor and the lead animal trainer for Fear Free. From early life it was undeniably clear that Mikkel’s number one focus was always going to be animals. Mikkel’s childhood consisted of two joys; horses and dogs. Her training career started early with help from her childhood dog, a Wire Haired Fox Terrier named Scooter, who delighted in fun games like running in the opposite direction when called, leading the neighborhood bark patrol and terrorizing other dogs in a blaze of terrier fueled fury. But, where frustration created what could have been rifts the size of the massive holes Scooter dug in the yard, pure love was able to bridge those gaps and create a wiser, more resilient child and dog who together became grand champions in 4-H obedience. Unlike many children her age, Mikkel traded sports and other hobbies to instead chase after blue ribbons at horse shows and memories on trail rides. Her special passion was taking horses who were deemed less suitable by others and revealing the true champion inside. In pursuit of formal animal training education, Mikkel graduated from the rigorous San Francisco SPCA Dog Training Academy with Jean Donaldson (earning a Certificate in Training and Counseling; CTC), the Karen Pryor Academy (becoming a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner; KPA CTP), the Purdue Dogs and Cats Course, and Mikkel shadowed Dr. Nicolas Dodman at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Mikkel’s favorite educational experience was providing enrichment and positive reinforcement guidance to orangutans at Jungle Island in Miami. Along with her growing knowledge, Mikkel achieved other certifications, including becoming a Certified Behavior Consultant Canine (CBCC-KA), a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) and a Certified Dog Behavior Counselor (CDBC).Locally in the Seattle area Mikkel is the dog and cat behavior counselor at Homeward Pet Adoption Center, resident trainer for veterinary behaviorist, Dr. Wailani Sung, and a trainer at Doggy Haven Resort. When it comes to home life, Mikkel’s four legged pug kids were eventually joined by a now seven year old daughter, Reagan, who is blossoming into her own rights as a trainer (Reagan’s current passion project is taming farmyard chickens and goats and pursuing ambitions to run an animal rescue and become a veterinarian like her Papa, Marty). Today, Mikkel’s family lives in in a country getaway space outside of Seattle along with the family’s cherished pug genius, Willy who charms guests with his arsenal of tricks and delights in giving his version of wet willy’s with his surprisingly long, frog-like tongue. Mikkel recently co-authored “From Fearful to Fear Free: A Positive Program to Free Your Dog from Anxiety, Fears, and Phobias” with Dr. Marty Becker, Dr. Lisa Radosta and Wailani Sung. Before she became a dog trainer, Jenny Efimova was working human trauma survivors for a living. Her job involved being empathetic and meeting people where they were. It wasn't immediately obvious to her that a lot of the lessons she'd learned at work could be applied to someone in her home who was suffering: Her dog. Her young rescue, Larkin, was increasingly afraid to go out on walks in her neighborhood. The first professionals she worked with told her she was the issue: She wasn't “confident” enough with her puppy, and he thought he was the boss. It didn't feel right to her, and the suggested methods didn't work. In fact, they felt like they were making matters worse. Then she started working with a trainer who explained how to use positive reinforcement in training, and it was a behavioral game changer for her and her dog Larkin. This led her to become a certified dog trainer herself, through the Karen Pryor Academy. Today she trains online and in Brookline, MA. She also runs an Instagram account Annie and Jenny discuss the challenges that come with cultural expectations of how both dogs and dog owners should behave. They confront the popular idea that if you are not a stern leader with your dog, you are spoiling them, and consider whether there has been any cultural shift in changing the conversation about what it means to be a compassionate dog owner. They also discuss how interspecies relationships and examining our expectations of our pets can help us learn to be more humane and compassionate in general. This week, Jessica Benoit joins Tabitha to discuss cooperative care. Cooperative care involves training an animal to not only tolerate handling and husbandry procedures, but to be an active, willing participant in these experiences. The animal either gives consent by performing a behavior or is easily distracted by food during a veterinary procedure. Many animals feel fear, anxiety, and stress at their veterinary visits and with husbandry procedures. Cooperative care techniques provide animals with some choice and control which decreases fear, reduces stress, and increase comfort for the animal. Cooperative care gives the animal a voice and a choice and a way to say, “no, not right now” or “I'm not comfortable”. Empowered choice of the animal met with respectful actions of the handler builds the animals trust in the handler and in the care process itself. By having your animal become a willing participant of their own care, their confidence will increase, thus increasing their tolerance of future handling and veterinary care. Jessica and I discuss what is cooperative care, benefits of cooperative care, applications of cooperative care in the veterinary setting, and more! Also, keep an eye out for future cooperative care online and in-person events from Jessica (CVC Animal Training) and I (Chirrups and Chatter)About our guest:Jessica graduated from the NAIT Animal Health Technology program in 2010. She is a Registered Veterinary Technologist and the co-owner of Companion Veterinary Clinic, a Fear Free Certified Practice in Alberta, Canada. She is a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Behaviour, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner. Jessica is also a Fear Free Certified veterinary professional, trainer, and speaker. Jessica developed the training and behaviour program at Companion Veterinary Clinic in 2013, developing curricula for dog training classes, kitten classes, trick training, and offering private training and behaviour modification sessions. Jessica enjoys educating and sharing her knowledge through speaking engagements which include Doggone Safe presentations for children, guest lecturing for post-secondary institutions, providing client education seminars as well as continuing education events for veterinary professionals. Some dogs really freak out about loud noises. Unfortunately, too often, new dog owners learn this on a day when scary sounds abound: July 4th. Annie talks to fellow trainer, Cheryl Gfrerer of Giffy Dog in St. Paul, MN, about her personal experiences dealing with a sound-sensitive rescue dog, and together they discuss protocols and practical approaches to helping dogs who are triggered by fireworks and the like. Listen Now New Bill Addresses Pets During Divorce In Pennsylvania, former attorney and now state Rep. Anita Kulik has introduced H.B. 1432, which would establish the new areas of concern for judges to consider when deciding guardianship of a pet in divorce cases. If the bill passes, the judge would be allowed to consider: whether the animal was acquired prior to or during the marriage; the basic, daily needs of the animal; who generally gets veterinary care and social interaction for the animal; who deals with local and state regulations, such as licensing; and who has the greater ability to financially support the pet. Listen Now Why Is My Female Dog Humping? Usually humping is associated with male dogs, but humping is also very common amongst female dogs. Some girls will hump toys or other objects, some hump air, others hump other dogs or even people. We talk with Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Chair of The Association of Professional Dog Trainers Nick Hof, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, KPA-CTP, CSAT, to answer some of your most commonly asked questions about female dogs and humping. Listen Now Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Pet Food Company A federal judge has dismissed a multi-million-dollar lawsuit filed against Ainsworth Pet Nutrition (which is owned by Smucker's) for alleged false and deceptive advertising of its Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food. The suit claimed Ainsworth's labeling of Rachael Ray Nutrish, as natural food for dogs was false, deceptive and misleading. Independent laboratory tests found Glyphosate, a chemical weed killer such as RoundUp, was present in the products. The judge said, "The presence of negligible amounts of Glyphosate in a dog food product that do not have harmful, 'toxic,' or 'carcinogenic' effects is not likely to affect consumers' decisions in purchasing the product and is thus not material." Then for the same reasons, Judge Stanton dismissed the breach of warranty claim ruling, "A reasonable consumer would not interpret the label 'natural' as warranting that the products contain no amount of Glyphosate." Positive reinforcement and positive methods are not only effective when training and teaching our dogs, but it is equally as effective in our other relationships. Whether it's relationships at work or school, in a marriage, in a partnership, when dating, with your friends, with your family, with your neighbors, etc. I think we can all agree that we'd enjoy these relationships the most when positive methods are the ones we are relying on. San Choi, KPA-CTP joins me to discuss this topic and bring awareness to the fact that how we train our dogs can help us learn how to better communicate with others around us. Laura Donaldson, is a PhD, CDBC, KPA CTP and the owner of Four Paws, Four Directions Dog Training & Behavior Consulting, LLC at https://fourpawsfourdirections.comThe episode will focuses on THE IMPORTANCE OF RELAXATION FOR PUPPIES (& ALL DOGS). Topics covered include mat training for puppies, calming enrichment activities and the cognitive as well as emotional underpinnings of the RELAXATION RESPONSE that we want to teach our puppies.TEN WAYS TO HELP YOUR DOG LEARN TO “REALLY” RELAX ON A MAT!1. Do not use a clicker or other excitatory marker with mat training – if you want to use a marker, use a CALMING one like “Niiiiice,” or “Gooooood,” said in almost a subliminal tone of voice.2. Do the “Be Still/Reward Nothing” game on the mat. No movement, not even a wagging tail.3. Every time you place a treat down on the mat (because we're feeding the mat, not the dog), ask your dog to TAKE A DEEP BREATH. The sequence would be:Calming Marker -- Ask the dog to TAB -- Place treat on the mat4. Give your dog a LickiMat spread with baby food, squeeze cheese, xylitol-free yogurt or even an overripe banana on his/her mat. There is science & hard data backing up that calm repetitive licking induces both a physical & neurochemical “feel good” sensation that is very soothing.5. Do some massage with your dog on the mat.6. Do Tellington TTouch Ear Slides with your dog on the mat.7. Give your dog a stuffed, frozen Kong on his/her mat.8. Dogs use social mimicry to interpret their environment, so if the human stands by the mat and practices relaxed, deep breathing, dogs will often imitate what their human is doing.9. Have your dog on their mat & plug in a pheromone dispenser nearby.10. BE CALM & RELAXED YOURSELF AND CHANCES ARE THAT YOUR DOG WILL BE (MORE) CALM & RELAXED!!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/puppytalk)

Irith reached out to me after we recorded with a few more ideas of ways to expose your puppy (or young dog) to more things: - Dress up in costumes to help your puppy get used to people looking different. - Use decorations, etc., to set up a socialization adventure in the yard. - Put different things around your home as socialization adventures indoors (e.g., let the vacuum cleaner sit out, set an automated toy to walk across the floor, etc.). Basically, be creative! Try to introduce them to as much as you can, little by little, and let their reaction be your guide! In this episode I chat with Grisha Stewart, the founder of the well known protocol for reactive dogs, Behavior Adjustment Training. We talk about how BAT has evolved, when it can be incredibly useful, and how it can be integrated with other strategies for other problem behaviors, such as when a dog is showing true predation, or as we call it in the episode, when a dog is actually having fun.AggressiveDog.comAggression in Dogs ConferenceAbout Grisha:Grisha Stewart is an author, international speaker, and dog trainer based in Oregon, USA, who specializes in dog reactivity.
