WOKE WEDNESDAY: Dilbert goes for the ESG-ugular, What Would Jesus Buy, Vivek's "shareholders", and Barry Diller
Welp, it looks like we have a Christmas miracle, everyone: We found the lamest fucking documentary ever made. That’s right, we watched What Would Jesus Buy? so you don’t have to! Join us as we fly off the fucking rails, becoming bona fide capitalists strictly in spite of this terrible movie, despite its agreeable message. Pour yourself a tall glass of eggnog and vodka (as Jen would make it), kick back, and tune in as we discuss the length of Brokeback Mountain (the book), living in Orange Julius, the shameful lives of poor children, and all those other things that bring you holiday cheer. Oh and also, fuck Morgan Spurlock.
Christmas is creepin' and the Documenteers hit the seasonal theme in this week's episode as Jonni and Bob Sham tackle a holiday warning in Rob VanAlkemade's 2007 documentary about Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping. It's "What Would Jesus Buy?" and it's free to view on Reverend Billy's YouTube channel. Good to know you don't have to buy a movie about holiday consumerism. Nobody seems to think Reverend Billy is wrong, but how well is this message being communicated in this film? Will Bob stop his holiday bitching? Maybe next week. Let's go to the mall! Then we can get escorted out of the mall by armed security! Then we dry hump the shrubs at Wal-Mart headquarters! We apologize on behalf of good taste for songs used in this episode, but what the hell do you expect? It's a Christmas themed episode. Bob's just trolling himself, really. You get it, right? Right? Keep on Doccin'®
Listen in as ArtsCultureBeat talks with spitfire actor, writer, and producer Reverend Billy Talen of Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir and Choir member and activist Dragonfly (aka Miss Justice Jester). For nearly two decades, performance artist Reverend Billy has staged protests in the style of Evangelical sermons passionately agitating against wide-ranging sins such environmental exploitation, commercialism, and police brutality. He's been an NYC mayoral candidate, the subject of the documentary "What Would Jesus Buy?," and he's been arrested more than 70 times, most recently at a Black Lives Matter protest at Grand Central Terminal. He's joined by Dragonfly , longtime Choir member and activist, a leader in the Ferguson protests. Her hug of a Ferguson riot cop in front of the police station, which was a mutual hug, was seen by many millions, picked up by AP, "New Yorker." Now, just before the launch of Reverend Billy's “Faster, Monsanto! Die! Die!” world tour, Reverned Billy and Dragonfly talk to ArtsCultureBeat’s Vanessa Quirk and Yashica Dutt about activism, acting, and the blurry line between playing and becoming a character.

Activist Cinema Episode 6 - What Would Jesus Buy? (2007) is a documentary that follows Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping on their North American tour in the month leading up to Christmas 2005. As we head into the capitalist orgy of Black Friday and the holiday shopping season, this film works as a great antidote to the consumer frenzy that is about to be unleashed. Also, it is available free on YouTube (as of this posting). Rev. Billy and Nehemiah are both currently (11.24.13) facing a year in prison. Please follow this link to sign a petition for their charges to be dropped. [Click to Listen]

Will You Be Saved From The "Shopocalypse" This Christmas Season? Pacifica Radio offered its listners a bit of "salvation" in the form of a recorded live performance by Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping. The performance took place in New York City on November 4th, 2007 at the Highline Ballroom. Reverend Billy and his choir proselytized against consumerism, which they claim stifles the uniqueness of our lives, and told their audience that they believe that, "if we 'back away from the product' - even a little bit, then we Put The Odd Back In God!" A sermon by Reverend Billy anchors the performance with a critique of "born again" fundamentalist religion, which he claims inevitably leads to violence. He gives homage to our "first births" and encourages his audience to re-connect with their innate questioning nature. This program was produced for Pacifica Radio (www.pacifica.org) by Jon Almeleh and Ursula Ruedenberg. Mixing and editing was done by Jon Almeleh and Bill Wells. Doug George provided technical assistance. For information about Rev. Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping, go to www.revbilly.com. An interview with Rob VanAlkemade the director of What Would Jesus Buy? and Savitri Durkee the Director of the Church of Stop Shopping (as well as the artist-wife of Reverend Billy. What Would Jesus Buy? follows Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir as they go on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse: the end of mankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt. Bill Talen (aka Reverend Billy) was a lost idealist who hitchhiked to New York City only to find that Times Square was becoming a mall. Spurred on by the loss of his neighborhood and inspired by the sidewalk preachers around him, Bill bought a collar to match his white caterer's jacket, bleached his hair and became the Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping. Since 1999, Reverend Billy has gone from being a lone preacher with a portable pulpit preaching on subways, to the leader of a congregation and a movement whose numbers are well into the thousands.
