This week on Truth to Power, we get you ready for the Primary Election here in Louisville taking place on Tuesday, May 19th (with early voting already underway!). Back on the evening of April 14th at Central High School, a Candidate Forum was held for Louisville's first-ever non-partisan Mayoral race. Eight candidates vying to become Louisville's next mayor participated to discuss their priorities and values. For the first time this year, the races for Louisville mayor and Metro Council are nonpartisan. Louisville Public Media, the Louisville Urban League and WDRB collaborated on this public forum to hear from candidates for mayor. Unlike in past years, every mayoral candidate will appear on all Jefferson County ballots in a nonpartisan section. The two who receive the most votes will move on to the general election in November. Kenya Young, the President and CEO of Louisville Public Media, co-moderated this Mayoral Candidate Forum with Gilbert Corsey of WDRB. All active candidates were invited to participate and eight did. Since then, one participant, Jeff Yocum, bowed out of the race. Two other candidates – Bill Wells and JusAustin Lane – previously withdrew. The candidates introduced themselves to the live audience at Central High School and responded to questions on a number of topics including affordable housing, data centers, police, public safety and business and development. Candidates from across the political spectrum attended the forum, and many were united in their criticism of incumbent Democratic Mayor Craig Greenberg, who did not attend. The resolution was voted down 3-2 on January 28th with the promise that slight revisions would be made. This bill was brought back yesterday by City Attorney General Rob Bonta with a rewrite making sure that law enforcement was protected in notifying ICE when people are arrested for crimes.   This bill debate centered around El Cajon's cooperation with the federal immigration enforcement. Local law enforcements involvement with federal immigration enforcement had been limited in the past because of the California Values Act. The purpose of the California Values Act was to protect the safety and well-being of all Californians by ensuring that state and local resources are not used to fuel mass deportations, separate families, and ultimately hurt California's economy. The reality was hamstringing our local law enforcement from doing their jobs of protecting the people. This New resolution, Mayor Bill Wells said, “isn't about going after illegal immigrants in schools or business just for being in the country illegally, but we're clear that we want to notify ice when people are arrested for crimes.  Amid much opposition Mayor Bill Wells argued that most residents support the resolution, citing 57% of El Cohon voters who backed Donald Trump in the 2020 election. This week Dr. Bob welcomes the Mayor of El Cajon, CA and Congressional Candidate Bill Wells.  Bill was one of the few politicians that stood up for Constitutional Freedoms during the COVID lockdowns, making his city in San Diego County a safe haven for personal liberties while neighboring cities lashed out at citizens who did not comply with totalitarian mandates.He is full of great ideas to bring to the national stage as he runs for a US Congressional seat.After recieving his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Wells spent years in the Mental Health field in positions ranging from clinician to senior executive.  More recently, after spending 10 years as the Mayor of El Cajon, Bill Wells is ready to take his experience and American values to Washington DC.

He was selected by his fellow Council members to serve as the Mayor Pro Tem during 2009 and 2013. In October of 2013, the Mayor of El Cajon resigned and Wells was appointed to serve out the rest of that term as Mayor. He was then elected as Mayor of El Cajon in November of 2014. In 2013, Mayor Wells was awarded the San Diego County Republican Party Elected Official of the Year. He has been a mental health professional, working mostly with the severely mentally ill, in both clinical and administrative roles. Additionally, Mayor Wells teaches classes at a local college. In this interview, Brian and Bill discuss the recently imposed state-wide mask mandates in California, why Mayor Wells is not enforcing the mask mandate in his city of El Cajon, what it is like being openly Christian in political office, the importance of weighing the evidence for yourself and making your own health decisions, and the harm of surrendering common sense and reason to party ideology.
