Just a spoonful of shopping makes the bombs go down the bombs go down the bombs go down. War is an active loss of our memory of the Earth. The pilots and crew of bombers are sighting the ordinance into the side of the Earth and losing their Earth Love. But you and I paying for it? What are we losing? Consumerism's wars have saturation advertising on one end of families on fire on the other. The bombing of the Earth breaks our own memory of being within the world of the Earth. Our shopping attacks memory, too, while selling the past as false nostalgia. Stop Shopping, Stop Bombing.

This week's episode is all about shopping bans and the no-spend trend. This month our social media feeds have been flooded with one thing: people swearing off shopping. Like, really swearing it off. We see everything from no-spend months, to shopping bans, and even boycotts. And we get it. After the consumerist frenzy of the holidays, that pull towards simplicity or a “less is more” approach almost feels…. revolutionary. We've been covering this topic for years, and this "new" trend is like seeing an old friend get a new haircut and a different outfit. It looks like it's changed, but it's got the same good bones. In this episode, we explain why cutting off all spending has become so popular, the hidden psychology behind it, and whether it's a genuine path to financial health or just another form of deprivation disguised as wellness.Takeaways:Shopping bans aren't a one-size-fits-all solution. They can be helpful for some, but can also backfire if not approached thoughtfully."Abstinence-only" approaches can lead to deprivation. It's important to address the root cause of our spending. We have a consumption problem. The story about the clothing donations after the California fires highlights the scale of this problem. It's about being intentional, not restrictive. We share a “glass of water effect” metaphor to help you reframe your relationship with spendingListen to the full episode for our 3-step approach to cutting back on spending. 2024. What the Hell happened? This was the year that rushed up at us like a freak storm. This year, all the eco-systems were fully committed to the Sixth Extinction, and so are we. 2025. We awake from a deep sleep and change completely. Our bodies are ecosystems, too, knowing the Earth. This is a wild party we can't refuse. Our clothes are tearing, and the wind is peeling away our walls. We searched, but we found that our logical thinking was gone. We must find our love. Make the Earth's storm more wild? In this conversation Sheryl McCarthy talks to Reverend Billy and Savitri D, co-founders of the Church of Stop Shopping and the Earth Church. The Earth Church in New York's Lower East Side, combines performance art with activism. Initially a critique of consumerism, it now focuses on environmental justice, climate change, gentrification, and social issues. The church's services blend music, theater, and preaching to inspire direct action and community engagement. It also provides support to marginalized groups, including migrants, and promotes social change through local activism.
For this BCR recording we were at the Hollow Nickel Bar in Brooklyn NY. Why a hollow nickel -- check out their website. We had a wild, funny and crucially important conversation about the work of the Church of Stop Shopping with Rev. Billy and Vera Anderson, They had just finished their Saturday morning "Earth Riot" radio show at WBAI.Rev. Billy is an enactment of activist actor and writer Billy Talen; he leads the Church of Stop Shopping -- a New York City performance community preaching the imminent 'shopocalypse' when the world ends due to rampant and unholy consumerism. And Vera Anderson was on Bar Crawl Radio when we were out West with the Nevada Desert Experience's 60 mile Peace Walk to the entrance of the Nevada Nuclear Test Site -- See BCR #219. Vera is a musician and a mental health advocate in NYC and Las Vegas and she is on the board of the Nevada Desert Experience and Pace e Bene advocating for nuclear abolition. Hosted on Acast. The Earth is everywhere all the time, it's you and me and the ideas, pixels and bad breath that connect us. The Earth is in charge and what they (the Earth is non-binary, we believe in the Church of Stop Shopping) - what they are working hard at just now is something called the Sixth Extinction. In the Earth Riot Radio world this is what has replaced the nation state, religion and military. It is deep, extreme Evolution. Oh Earthalujah! Spare us! Give us a strange strength we have never known! And may we laugh till we die!

The Earth gives us the gift of the Unknown, the fabulous Unknown, and we are humble for the first time. What are we to do? Tell us.

Amid Israel's war on Gaza and COP 23, we speak with Savitri D. and Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping, a good friends of The Indy that are always on the cutting edge of social movements.
First, we go to CUNY, the City University of New York. For the past months it's been a flashpoint in the battle over campus free speech during a time of war. At Hunter College on the Upper East Side, the campus has been roiled by the administration's flip-flopping on whether they will allow a film that's critical of Israel to be shown. And at Baruch College in Lower Manhattan, top officials there canceled a teach-in on Gaza by members of that school's history department. We are joined by Tami Gold, Professor of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College, Johanna Fernandez, Professor of History at Baruch College and author of The Young Lords: A Radical History and Safa Khan, a student at Baruch College. Then, this week, diplomats, world leaders and a small army of fossil fuel industry lobbyists have gathered in the United Arab Emirates, or UAE, for the 28th annual U.N. climate summit. There's no sign that progress will be made on reaching new agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stabilize soaring global temperatures. We are joined by Tefa Galvis, a member of the eco-socialist working group of the NYC chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. Last year, the eco-socialists were a key part of a coalition of groups that persuaded the New York state legislature to pass the revolutionary Build Public Renewables Act. Lastly we speak with Savitri D. and Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping, a good friends of The Indy that are always on the cutting edge of social movements.
When faced with a challenge, a soldier will always come up with some sort of solution to make the system, process or piece of equipment work. It may not be an elegant solution or a good use of time, but they will find a way to make it work. Lori Mongold and Andrew St. Laurent are doing everything in their power to make sure soldiers don't have to find workarounds to disconnected systems, at least in the force management world. They are the chief and deputy chief of the office in the Army staff charged with fixing how the service creates and manages units. Their solution revises processes and replaces fifteen legacy systems with one new information technology system, the Global Force Information Management Operational Environment. They join host Bob Bradford in the studio to explain the bureaucratic journey required to move the global force management process from the industrial to the cognitive era.
So many young people come out of their very young years looking the polluter generations in the eye. They make basic things clear about survival and right and wrong. Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase is the most obvious of our climate criminals. We don't have that many gangsters at his level. He puts his trillions behind the fabulous profits made by putting carbon into the air. He killed the Paris Climate Agreement. And now, after this summer's science fiction scale disasters, we know our activism must somehow articulate what people like Dimon are doing. We haven't done that yet. We need to OUT the poisoners. How? Well, the Church of Stop Shopping goes into the big Chase banks in Manhattan, and we dance on their desks....Do you have a better idea?

These two artists passed on within days of one another last December, and it seems like yesterday. They were dear friends of the Church of Stop Shopping. Hamish was best known for his band The Clean, and John for his Afro-Dixie Mixtapes. Ambitious artists could wish to leave for the world such luminous gifts. But “....our little life / Is rounded with a sleep." We can't know whether what we make will survive. All we can do is give to those who follow us our songs, and our stories, for justice, love, and peace. That's what John and Hamish did and continue to do every day. Love-a-alujah!
In This Episode: Tinsley shares how she knows which trends to invest in and which ones to skip (AKA: we're talking denim SKIRTS.) Tinsley also shares her philosophy around adapting to certain trends. Dallion goes off on a tangent about jeans (which was triggered by the denim skirt convo.) We talk - making smart choices on a budget. Tinsley makes a really good case for why we need to stop shopping on sale. We close it out by sharing our latest buyers remorse stories.
We have Actual Reality and we have a lot of Virtual Reality in this episode too...We have to know the difference...We live in a highly mediated mindscape, with the immersion in corporate marketing the fundamentalist ritual practice of ordinary living in America. In our Earth Riot this week our show of the Actual is a preaching by Bertha Lewis in the year of Occupy Wall Street. She addresses the "Church of Stop Shopping" during the struggle to keep Walmart out of New York City. That effort to keep the slayer of neighborhoods out of the city did succeed, and Bertha's activist was a crucial driver of that resistance. And isn't Bertha hilarious?

Learn more about Paths to Understanding at https://www.PathsToUnderstanding.org Join the Paths Network at https://www.PathsNetwork.org Although money spent on gifts during the holiday season increases yearly, one in five Americans now seeks to spend less. The founder of what is called The Church of Stop Shopping is hoping to expand that trend...and not just during the holiday season. This week on Challenge 2.0, we continue to explore the work of the man known as Reverend Billy...and why he believes our future is dependent on spending less, not more.
Learn more about Paths to Understanding at https://www.PathsToUnderstanding.org Join the Paths Network at https://www.PathsNetwork.org Shopping malls have been called cathedrals of consumption...advertisers acolytes of excess. At no time is that more evident than during the Christmas season. Holiday spending drives 41% of Americans into debt. That behavior has many critics, but one man has made it his mission to convince us that the cost extends well beyond a single holiday season, well beyond our bank accounts. His work is the focus of this edition of Challenge 2.0-Reverend Billy, and the Church of Stop Shopping.

The rapacious shopping economy has been our devil for 20 years in the Church of Stop Shopping. But that doesn't matter. Because this week the zombie tsunami crashes on us all. The News from the Natural World in this Earth Riot episode is breath-taking in the finality of it violence. And meanwhile we shout Earthalujah!!! ...because we are grateful that life evolves, and our dead bodies are released into the sky as flowers and Chestnut-sided Warblers.... Earthalujah!
easy ways to cut your shopping addiction
We get a needed sermon from Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping about their new “Earth Church” in a former bank building on the Lower East Side. Billy insists if we're going to survive the climate crisis, we will need soon need an Earth-centered cultural revolution.
First, we commemorate Michael Lardner, founder and driving force behind the Marxist Education Project who died last Wednesday at 68. He hailed from a family of Michigan autoworkers and came to New York as a young man to work on the grapes boycott called by the United Farm Workers. In that same era, he helped found the New York Marxist School which became the Brecht Forum. When the Brecht Forum closed down in 2014, Michael stepped into a moment of great sadness and disappointment and launched the Marxist Education Project. We look at the ongoing struggle to unionize workers at starbucks franchises across the US. Starbucks Workers at 316 stores in 36 states have filed to unionize despite starbucks' aggressive anti-union campaign. So far, 201 Starbucks stores in 32 states have won union elections. Just 40 stores have lost an election. In retaliation, Starbucks has been union-busting. Among other tactics, they have fired worker-organizers and sometimes even closed down stores. Austin Locke, a key starbucks organizer, was fired from starbucks on July 5 just five days after his store on Starbucks at Ditmars Blvd and 31st Street in the Astoria, Queens won their union election 7-4. He speaks with us about his experience and updates us on the union fight. Advocates for the Build Public Renewables Act get another chance to make their case tomorrow. On Thursdays New York State Assembly will host an unprecedented mid-summer hearing on the BRPA. If passed and signed into law, the bill would greatly expand New York's public power system and the state's use of renewable energy sources. To discuss this, we speak with Sarahana Shrestha. She recently knocked off a 13-term State Assemblymember in her Hudson Valley district while running on the promise to fight for public power. Finally, we get a much-needed sermon from Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping about their new “Earth Church” in a former bank building on the Lower East Side. Billy insists if we're going to survive the climate crisis, we will need soon need an Earth-centered cultural revolution.
