Celebrating Halloween, this special episode dives into the indie horror-comedy Booger, an unconventional story that combines grief, body horror, and dark humor. Director Mary Dauterman, editor Kyle Moriarty, and lead actor Grace Glowicki share the creative and logistical challenges they faced bringing this unique film to life. From crafting a cat-human transformation story inspired by loss to the collaborative spirit on set, they reveal how to keep indie film projects grounded in vision, even on a tight budget. Mary Dauterman is a director and writer making her feature debut with Booger, a horror-comedy that blends humor and body horror to explore themes of grief. With a background in illustration and advertising, Mary brings a unique visual style to her work, making her voice distinct in the indie film scene. Kyle Moriarty is an editor known for his collaborative approach to indie projects, often working closely with directors to capture unique tones and pacing. His work on Booger helped shape the film's unsettling, humorous edge, bringing out the full impact of its horror-comedy fusion. Grace Glowicki is an actor and filmmaker acclaimed for her physical, transformative performances. In Booger, she brings the role to life through meticulous body language, channeling both horror and humor in the character's journey of transformation. In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins speaks with Mary Dauterman, Kyle Moriarty, and Grace Glowicki to discuss: The inspiration behind Booger, blending dark themes with horror and humor How the 2020 lockdown shaped the film's themes of grief and loneliness Mary Dauterman's transition from shorts to her debut feature film and what that entailed The creative approach to body horror, from prosthetics to unique camera techniques How editor Kyle Moriarty's previous collaboration with Mary Dauterman influenced the edit's tone and pacing Grace Glowicki's physical preparation for the role, embodying the character's transformation Managing DIY effects on a low budget Memorable Quotes: “Writing it during lockdown and writing it being like super isolated, these themes of grief and loneliness started creeping in.” (04:18) “I decided to storyboard the entire film all the way through, which was crazy, but I'm really glad I did it because I think I could pay attention to certain things like: how does the film feel visually?” (12:12) “Our specialty lenses were called a lens baby, which is kind of like a lens with an accordion and you can push it all around and the focus falls and it looks really unsettling.” (14:06) “The biggest challenge was we were shooting like July into August and turns out prosthetics melt.” (24:48) “It's a little bit like the more seriously we take her cat behavior and transformation and just all that grossness… the funnier it is.” (30:52) “I was getting these poster designs that I was like, what? No. I'm going to do this myself. So I went a little nuts.” (46:20) Resources: Booger on IMDb Follow Mary Dauterman on Instagram Mary Dauterman on IMDb Mary Dauterman's website Kyle Moriarty on IMDb Kyle Moriarty's website Grace Glowicki on IMDb Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com Learn more about your ad choices. The definitive exploration-told in revelatory detail-of the writing, recording, and release of John Lennon's celebrated and magical fourth solo album Mind Games, and the era that inspired it.Described by Yoko Ono as "ahead of its time," Mind Games is a breakthrough album from John Lennon in which he employs a Plastic Ono Band comprising the cream of the crop of New York session musicians-a fan favorite that remains a cult classic ever since its first release on October 29, 1973. This insightful and beautiful book presents handwritten lyrics, letters, artworks by Lennon and Ono, and previously unseen photography alongside their firsthand commentary about the lyrics, songs, and album artwork, as well as contributions from the musicians, friends, engineers, and key figures involved in the making of this landmark album. Mind Games was the product of an exceptionally turbulent time for the Lennons. While Nixon and Hoover were attempting to have Lennon deported, John and Yoko endured endless litigations and as the popular press turned on them once again, they bravely rose above it all, continuing their campaigns for non-violent peaceful protest to end the war in Vietnam and for equal rights for women. It was also an exciting time when they both re-embraced mysticism and magical thinking. In this sumptuous volume, text and images from the key players are woven together to reveal not only the details behind the creation, recording, and release of this groundbreaking commercial and skillfully crafted recording, but also to shed new light on a period of transformation and experimentation for Lennon and Ono. The original album will be re-released to coincide with the book, a completely remixed and reissued 6 x CD / 2 x BluRay digital edition of Mind Games, together with two deluxe Mind Games boxsets, bringing the album to a new generation of listeners. "Lavishly illustrated. The most interesting aspect of the book to students of Lennon's music is undoubtedly the inclusion of lyrics from his songs of the era, usually accompanied on facing pages by the former Beatle's handwritten drafts, with guitar chords indicated and his comments on the song's inspiration. A detailed look at an important chapter in the life of one of the iconic artists of the late 20th century.- Kirkus ReviewsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

For this episode, the second of November 2023, I spoke with director, producer and editor Jeremy Coon.Jeremy was the producer on the 2007 film Napoleon Dynamite. But I spoke to him in his editor director capacity about the new documentary “A Disturbance in the Force', which I was lucky enough to see at the UK premiere in London last week. The documentary chronicles the story behind the bizarre and legendary Star Wars Holiday Special. The 1978 TV special full of growling wookies, odd dance numbers and a “revisit” of sorts to the cantina, run be Bea Arthur usual and awkward appearances from the main cast of Star Wars. This is a shorter than usual episode, but I wanted to get it out to you before the documentary is released on 5th December So here is my conversation with Jeremy Coon, director and editor of Disturbance in the Force. I hope you enjoy it.All the linksThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5530733/advertisement
A suspenseful, riveting portrait of the lengths people will go to gain freedom, BEYOND UTOPIA follows various individuals as they attempt to flee North Korea, one of the most oppressive places on Earth, a land they grew up believing was a paradise. At the film's core are a mother desperate to reunite with the child she was forced to leave behind; a family of five — including small children and an elderly grandmother — embarking on a treacherous journey across the Yalu River and into the hostile mountains of China; and a man of God on a mission to help these desperate souls. Leaving their homeland is fraught with danger — severe punishment if caught and possibly even execution — as well as potential exploitation by unscrupulous brokers. Family members who remain behind also may face retribution. Yet these individuals are driven to take the risk. Gripping, visceral, and urgent, BEYOND UTOPIA embeds the viewer with these family members as they attempt their perilous escape, palpably conveying life-or-death stakes. The result is a singular, illuminating, and unforgettable experience. Director / Editor Madeleine Gavin joins us for a conversation on how she was able to plug herself into the network of incredibly brave people, those willing to risk the consequences of escaping from North Korea and those willing to risk their lives helping them, putting herself in harms way and whether she fears retribution for her spectacularly compelling work. "Beyond Utopia" had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received universal acclaim and won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary Competition. It has now since gone on to receive four Critics Choice Documentary Award nominations, including Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, and Best Editing for the film's director and editor, Madeleine Gavin. It is truly one of, if not the best, documentary of 2023. Madeleine was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the film which involved a lot of risk, pre-planning and is an ongoing issue for those still trapped in North Korea and seeking escape today. Please be sure to take a listen and check out the film, which will be playing in limited release on November 3rd. Thank you, and enjoy! With special -- and returning! -- guest Daniel Strange, Anna and Derek chat about lucid ghosts, the whisper mystery and so much more during their discussion of the perfect summer flick Field of Dreams (1989). Connect with '80s Movie Montage on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram! It's the same handle for all three... @80smontagepod.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/80sMontagePodTwitter: https://twitter.com/80sMontagePodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/80smontagepod/Anna Keizer and Derek Dehanke are the co-hosts of ‘80s Movie Montage. The idea for the podcast came when they realized just how much they talk – a lot – when watching films from their favorite cinematic era. Their wedding theme was “a light nod to the ‘80s,” so there's that, too. Both hail from the Midwest but have called Los Angeles home for several years now. Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. It is a point of pride that most of their podcast episodes are longer than the movies they cover.Daniel Strange first established himself as a unique comedic voice as the Director/Editor of "Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis", and has gone on to a varied career: directing 100+ commercials, writing video games ("Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions"), producing shows ("Written by a Kid", "KISStory"), even giving a presentation about his animated short, "Scary Smash," at Walt Disney Animation.

It's just doing a magic trick all day long.” [20:43] “It's better to swing and miss than not swing at all.” [33:06] “I was completely convinced that it would happen and that it would absolutely never happen.” [56:20] Mentioned Resources: Connect with Kabir on Instagram More about Kabir Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! Today on Art of the Cut, we speak with writer/director/editor Brett Morgen about his film “Moonage Daydream” about the iconic artist, David Bowie. This is no simple biopic. It's a rich, philosophical montage connecting Bowie's life and work with the culture that he is both affected by and speaking into. This interview came from numerous requests from Art of the Cut fans who loved the masterful editing of this film. Brett Morgen is known for directing biographical documentaries like Jane - about the extraordinary life of Jane Goodall, Cobain: Montage of Heck, about the life of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain, and The Kid Stays in the Picture, about the legendary Paramount producer, Robert Evans. Morgen has also directed the pilot of the series When the Lights Go On, and episodes of 30 for 30 and Runaways among other feature film and TV projects.

With special -- and returning! -- guest Daniel Strange, Anna and Derek discuss where each fall on the Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg director debate, Diane and Steven having the healthy relationship we all want and much more during their chat of the supernatural classic Poltergeist (1982).

Also, you won't want to miss her advice on how to get started in and navigate the business as it is today.

Martha Mitchell was the outspoken wife of Nixon's attorney general John Mitchell. The press called her “Mighty Mouth.” She was one of the first people to realize Nixon was connected to Watergate and she told anyone who would listen. Some believed her, others called her crazy and a drunk. And when she went missing for a few days, she claimed The Whitehouse was behind it. Director/Editor Anne Alvergue and Co-director Debra McClutchy join us to talk about about their new film called "The Martha Mitchell Effect" that tells her story.

This week we had the amazing privilege of interviewing award-winning documentary director and editor Erin McGoff. I (Mckenna) have been following her on TikTok for a while now so it was a bit of a surreal experience for me. We talked about everything from film industry tips, to high school stress, to feminism and how hard it is to be female in the industry (stop with the "Let me help you with that camera" comments. We're probably stronger than you.) Erin gave us some really helpful advice regarding high school, college, and life and we definitely recommend you listen to hear them as well (Spoiler: the trick is to look on the bright side and stay motivated... but she put it into better words than we did). Also, this episode will be painfully relatable for anyone interested in the film industry. What's your favorite premiere pro crashing story?
