The Honest Cost of the Best Chocolate w/ Jerry Toth of To'AK Chocolate

My guest is Jerry Toth of To'AK Chocolate, a luxury chocolate brand. Jerry studied economics at Cornell University and was a Hansard scholar at the London School of Economics. After very briefly working as an investment banker, he switched gears and relocated to South America in his 20s and then nomadically roamed the continent for several years, working as a foreign correspondent first for Adbusters magazine and taking other odd jobs. But during that time, he witnessed an era of unrestrained economic growth, an ecological decline in Latin America, and he ultimately set out on a mission to demonstrate what sustainable economic development can look like in real life. In 2007, Jerry laid roots in the Pacific Forest of Ecuador, where he co-founded a rainforest conservation organization called TMA, and created multiple rainforest preserves, became a food forest farmer, resurrected an ancient cacao variety from the brink of extinction, and launched this luxury chocolate company called To'AK, and is now building a regenerative cacao growers association across a 100 ,000 acre conservation corridor. Jerry's work has been featured in hundreds of media outlets across six continents, including National Geographic, Forbes, Vice, Smithsonian Magazine and Modern Farmer, among others... Were you into Cursed Objects before it was cool? Like Grandpa Simpson remembering the war, this week Dan and Kasia are holding a seance for those perennial whipping boys and girls, the hipsters – and recalling the green remembered hills of artisan beards, cereal cafes and small-batch trucker hats. Kicking off with a revisit to seminal, frequently painful 2005 sitcom Nathan Barley, we ask whether it is possible to make a defence of hipsters? Isn't it a better world when people are enthusiastically pursuing their own mad little niches and styles – even if their moustaches look a bit daft? Why do hipsters get blamed for gentrification instead of property developers? Why did Adbusters blame them for the demise of the counter-culture? And what about the future: does the word mean anything anymore, when they sell flat whites in Costa? Are we ready to declare the hipster officially dead, and have we identified the assailant: the influencer?  If you enjoyed this episode please join our Patreon!! ** ONLY £4 A MONTH TO SUPPORT YOUR FAVOURITE CULTURAL HISTORIANS - AND GET 25+ FULL BONUS EPISODES AND A CURSED OBJECTS STICKER PACK!** Theme music and production: Mr Beatnick Artwork: Archie Bashford

It's been a while since we've talked about Kalle Lasn. He is  one of the most dangerous leftists in the world and runs an organization called Adbusters. When we look at things like Fani Willis being allowed to get away with perjury we must ask ourselves, what does culture jamming look like in this case? Examining news coverage and commentaries about human population passing 8 billion on November 15, we unpack the reasons far too many of us avoid discourse about human overpopulation. Why are we tap-dancing around the very dialogue needed so people around the world can make informed, responsible family-size decisions? We conclude the guilt many feel about their privilege is actually hurting those who don't share our fortune. Also, find out why Black Friday was really bleak, and how TV networks refused to run Buy Nothing Day commercials. Plus, should Dave get over his obsession with phantom power and wall warts? Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, nature and magic and the wilderness have always influenced and inspired the themes, concepts, and settings of my writing. Because of the unique status of British Columbia being Unceded Indigenous Territory, and the immense diversity and presence of Indigenous cultures and communities in everyday life, understanding the intersecting voices of my settler and Red River Métis backgrounds are elements I explore throughout my poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. His articles and interviews have been published in the New York Times, Skeptic, Adbusters, The Ecologist and High Times. He is also on the editorial advisory board of the journal Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry, and he is on the medical and scientific advisory board of the National Center for Youth Law. He is also an editorial advisor for the Icarus Project/Freedom Center Harm Reduction Guide to Coming off Psychiatric Drugs as well as a member of MindFreedom and the International Society for Ethical Psychology & Psychiatry. Dr. Levine and I talked about how he sees ADHD from a bird's eye view, how tension is really the driver of an ADHD diagnosis and how parents need to start questioning - and at times resisting - illegitimate authorities. Well, I'm sure you might be asking "How do I know that an authority is illegitimate?" Listen in for yourself to hear how to think for yourself and how to recognize when authorities lack transparency and true interest in the mental health of our children when it comes to ADHD. Vacunas, tercera dosis, compras y navidades. - Entrevista al presidente Comité Empresa IASS, José Luis Gutiérrez. Carta abierta de José Luis Gutiérrez. Me avergüenzo de mi consejera. Nunca me había pasado. Me da mucha vergüenza ajena.

I am excited to be speaking to Paul Kingsnorth in this episode. Paul and I talk about the challenges that society faces and how we got here this journey encompasses education, capitalism and we discuss how the old stories warn us of such times. Paul is deeply insightful as always and it is good to speak to someone who wears his heart on his sleeve. https://www.paulkingsnorth.net Paul Kingsnorth is an English writer who lives in the west of Ireland. He is a former deputy-editor of The Ecologist and a co-founder of the Dark Mountain Project. Kingsnorth's nonfiction writing tends to address macro themes like environmentalism, globalisation, and the challenges posed to humanity by civilisation-level trends. His fiction tends to be mythological and multi-layered. After travelling through Mexico, West Papua, Genoa in Italy, and Brazil, Kingsnorth wrote his first book in 2003, One No, Many Yeses. The book explored how globalisation played a role in destroying historic cultures around the world Kingsnorth's second book, Real England, was published by Portobello Books in 2008. In this book, he reflected on how those same forces of globalisation affected England, his own country, in the homogenization of culture. This was Kingsnorth's first successful book, resulting in reviews by all major newspapers and citation in speeches by both David Cameron and the archbishop of Canterbury. He has contributed to The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, Daily Express, Le Monde, New Statesman, London Review of Books, Granta, The Ecologist, New Internationalist, The Big Issue, Adbusters, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 2, BBC Four, ITV, and Resonance FM. His first novel, The Wake was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Folio Prize, shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize, and won the Gordon Burn Prize.Film rights to the novel were sold to a consortium led by the actor Mark Rylance and the former president of HBO Films Colin Callender. Kingsnorth's second novel, Beast, was published in 2016 by Faber and Faber and was shortlisted for the Encore Award for the Best Second Novel in 2017. His third novel, completing a loose thematic trilogy beginning with The Wake, will also be published by Faber. Announcing the deal, Faber's editorial director, Lee Brackstone, said: "We are welcoming to Faber a writer who belongs in the tradition of past greats like William Golding, Robert Graves, David Peace and Ted Hughes. His sensibility sits comfortably with theirs and his literary achievement could well go on to be their equal. He is that good". It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective and author of the recent book Remake the World: Essays, Reflections, Rebellions, to discuss the 10-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. Then Sam and Emma are joined by Heather Digby Parton, proprietor of Hullabaloo and contributing writer at Salon.com, to wrap up the week in news. Astra, Sam, and Emma dive into the start of the Occupy movement, ten years ago today, as a response to the call issued by Adbusters and the failure of the US Government to provide any reciprocity or repercussions for the 2008 financial crisis. Astra reflects on the initial general assemblies and working groups that worked to determine why they were there and what their demands should be, as well as the skepticism that they'd last beyond the first night with the mass police presence in NYC. They expand on this discussion, exploring how the role of police brutality served to somewhat bolster the public view around the movement and helped jumpstart the spread of the movement well beyond just NYC or even the US, even serving to turn the political tide against the Clinton neoliberalism. They discuss the diversity of ideology in the movement, even if it was driven by an anti-establishment ethos, and how that served to help create this open and strong picture of the 99%, before wrapping up with how the movement was eventually forced out of Zuccotti Park and looking at the lasting impact on the progressive left Occupy ultimately had. Then Digby comes on to chat about what we have learned from the CA Recall, particularly in terms of boosting turnout by running against Trump no matter the election, and she, Sam, and Emma also cover the role of the centrist Dems within he general infrastructure shenanigans going on in Congress. Then in the Fun Half, Ronald Raygun calls in to chat about pegging tactics and Sam's wood, Jake from the Bay Area talks appealing to liberals, Ben Shapiro struggles with California not being Texas, and Clarence Thomas offers some incredibly weird words on the new role of the SCOTUS, plus, your calls and IMs! While law enforcement touts the benefits of cell site simulators, today we will talk about the negative impacts, as well. While the actual impacts are not documented due to secrecy, we have to wonder whether Stingrays could interfere with critical communications like 911 calls, for example. We also must understand that any tool can be used for good and for evil, by the "good guys" as well as the "bad guys". In an effort to bring more transparency, Cooper created Crocodile Hunter (a reference to Steve Irwin, who was tragically killed by a real-life stingray). Cooper explains how it works and how anyone can make one. And finally we'll talk about why it's so important to get out there and fight for more transparency. Cooper shows us what a difference this can make in your community with two very different situations in two US cities. The single easiest way to track someone today is using their cell phone. We have them with us at all times and in order for them to work, they must be tracked by the cell phone network. When law enforcement wants to identify people at a protest or hanging around a particular area, they could take the time to get a warrant to present to multiple cell phone providers. Or they could simply bring in a portable, fake cell site. Any cell phones in the area will reveal their location to all nearby cell sites, and the owners of those phones will be none the wiser. The use of cell site simulators (often known by a particularly popular model called a "Stingray") is heavily shrouded in secrecy. Even their very existence was denied for years. Today, we'll talk with a man who has made it his mission to uncover the use of such devices. We'll talk about how they work, why they're so hard to detect, and the broader implications of their use by police and sheriff's departments with little to no oversight. Kalle Lasn is a bit of a hero. You can tell that if you read his books Culture Jam and Meme Wars, or from his legendary magazine, movement and media foundation Adbusters. But really, the best way to get to know him is in this interview from around 2009. Drabs, Lau-Lau and Jonty discuss the interview (and therefore consumerism, mental health and the ecological crisis of capitalism) from a Christian perspective in this episode. They also drink a reasonable amount of terrible beer and have a few laughs.  Kalle's commentary and ideas are prescient and still depressingly relevant today. His thoughts on faith and particularly Christianity are refreshing and challenging to evangelicals and post-evangelicals alike.  Follow Beer Christianity on Twitter: @beerxianity and find us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube and Stitcher.  All Beer Christianity shows and info available at http://beerchristianity.libsyn.com  Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came to teach us a better way to be while reconciling us to God and each other in a way we could never do without Him. Neala Schleuning is the writer behind "Artpolitik: Social Anarchist Aesthetics in an Age of Fragmentation." The book has been a huge inspiration to us at Bank Job headquarters, and as its central theme it explores the relationship between aesthetics and ethics, and charts the destructive energy modernism brought to bear on meaning in art. 4-7 mins Dan and Neala first discuss Plato and Aristotle who put forward the idea that 'the good, the true and the beautiful' should sit right at the heart of aesthetics, in other words art should be 'meaningful'. Poets were banned under Plato as they stirred people up! Ethics is about guiding us collectively, modernism is about individualism, the romantic artist. Art becomes 'art for art's sake.'8-15 mins Their discussion then moves on to a very brief overview of the 20th century and the challenges to modernism - movements insisting on bringing politics back into the conversation. Neala says politics is ethics under another name. They then discuss the First World War, Dadism and Situationist International and the Lettrists, touching on Guy De Bord, who Neala thinks is one of the great lesser sung geniuses of the 20th century. The society of the Spectacle.16-20 mins - start to talk about Chris Marker, The Matrix and They Live, films which reveal the Spectacle as introduced by Neala in the last section.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJC4R1uXDaELooking 'beyond the Spectacle'. Neala talks about this as a 'control system'. Dan likens this to advertising, 'the production of desire' which connects to Neala's term 'capitalist aesthetics'. 21 -27 mins A brief chat about Schumacher - 'Small Is Beautiful' and the Buddhist Economics and what that is meant to be. Situationist International inspired 68 uprisings as well as groups like Adbusters. 'Another world is possible.'27-31 mins we discuss the new mass media - social media - and the politic art and memes that are shared.34-40 mins on optimism amid a world with Trump and Johnson. But is it a great time for progressives? We talk about the necessity of taking action and not just talking. "That's how you create another world, you actualise it, you don't wait for a great leader, you get together with other people."40-47 mins we begin to discuss a new book Neala is writing discussing the Anthropocene, human activity on the geological record, it's not theoretical. She's very interested in the 'dark side of the sublime' Timothy Martin and The Hyper Object. We wrap it up!

The crisis of our time People have very little political power beyond voting on election day. Current governing structures are incapable of changing the world and solving the big problems that we face, such as the climate crisis. The solution is to form a social movement – perhaps through revolution – that can make good decisions and achieve its goals, such as win elections, take sovereignty, and maintain power. A notable example is the Five Star Movement in Italy, which directs policy and takes control away from elected representatives when they violate the core principles of the movement. The limitations of contemporary protest Occupy Wall Street did not achieve its goals of ending the power of money over our democracies or give more power to the 99 percent. However, it did reveal that both the strategy of street protest as well as the way of protesting are broken. In addition, current activist culture is producing consensus-driven activism that is looking for incremental change and reform within the existing system. A true activist used to be someone who stands outside of the status quo and is not afraid to go against a movement’s consensus. The nature of social change A strong theory about how social change comes to fruition revolves around structural forces beyond human direct participation, like an economic crisis. This argues that it’s the combination of the crisis and people in the streets that achieves change. Two more ways of thinking about effecting change are subjectivism and theurgism. Subjectivism believes that change is a process that happens within us. When we change the way we are, then we transform how we see the world. Theurgism believes that social change and revolution are a process of divine intervention, by forces that are completely outside of our control. Is Democracy what we're fighting for, as anarchists? In episode 47 of the Ex-Worker Podcast, a contentious debate between Clara and Alanis on this topic sets the stage for an upcoming, in-depth engagement with the topic of Democracy. In addition, we clean out our backlog of listener feedback, clarifying our trash-talking of both the Bay Area and Adbusters in past episodes, as well as hearing from a listener in Australia about various online resources for finding out what's happening with anarchist and anti-fascists in the land down under. NYC Anarchist Black Cross provides us with thorough political prisoner updates, and we share a review of the book Huye Hombre Huye, available from Little Black Cart. As always, the episode is bookended with global news updates, plus prisoner birthdays, a whole slew of upcoming anarchist bookfairs and other events and more. {March 16, 2016} -------SHOW NOTES------ New York Anarchist Black Cross (NYC ABC) is doing a fantastic job of keeping us updated on political prisoners and prisoners of war. If you're looking for a comprehensive overview of political prisoners in the US, you can check out their new Illustrated Guide to Political Prisoners. It's got detailed info on all their cases including up to date mailing addresses plus tips on writing to prisoners; it's a great overview if you want to support radical prisoners but aren't sure where to start. Dr. Mutulu Shakur, a longtime black liberation prisoner who helped Assata Shakur escape to freedom, was supposed to be released from prison in February… but his release was denied at the last minute. He'll be facing the parole board later this spring. Here's a link to a statement he wrote explaining the situation with more info on how to show support. Supporters have also launched a new website at MutuluIsWelcomeHere.com to gather stories describing his the positive impacts he has made and to organize solidarity events leading up to his parole hearing. Former Black Panther Maliki Shakur Latine will also be heading to the parole board in April, and he's collecting parole letters; check out justiceformaliki.org for details. Supporters of Brandon Baxter (one of the Cleveland Four, anarchists active in the Occupy movement who were entrapped in an FBI plot) are doing a small fundraising campaign right now to help with costs to get him some visitors in his new digs at FCI Terre Haute in Indiana. Brandon hasn't received any visitors since his sentencing, and he's never had a in person visit since his arrest. He's about 11 hours away from his supporters who plan to visit and they need to raise some money for a car rental. They're only a couple of hundred bucks short, so even if you can throw in a few dollars it'll make a difference. Any donations not used for this trip will go into the general fund to support the Cleveland Four getting visitors. To learn more about their case, check out cleveland4solidarity.org or listen to Episode 17 on Conspiracy. Eric King, an anarchist from Kansas City accused of an alleged attack on a politician's office, has accepted a non-cooperating plea deal for a ten year prison sentence; after time served, he's got eight and a half years left to go. On top of this, the facility where he's locked up CCA is now on lock-down, and Eric has been put in solitary confinement. Please take a few minutes to send Eric a postcard or letter to remind him that folks are thinking of him. Eric King 27090045 CCA Leavenworth 100 Highway Terrace Leavenworth, KS 66048 Former earth liberation prisoner Daniel McGowan will be in court on March 15th in Washington, DC to support the Center for Constitutional Rights' case against the Federal Bureau of Prisons' “Communication Management Units.” The CMUs are experimental prison units that impose severe restrictions on prisoners' communications, both within the prison and with the outside world. If you're in the DC area and you want to show some solidarity against a particularly vicious form of repression - one that has primarily targeted Muslims and political radicals - you can find the info on our website. On March 23, Tyler Lang has his sentencing hearing for his charges under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act for releasing thousands of animals from a fur farm. If you can be in Chicago, please attend the hearing to show support for Tyler. It is important that on this difficult day for Tyler that he feel surrounded by love and solidarity, and that the judge see that Tyler is part of a community that is there for him. His co-defendant Kevin Olliff was sentenced to three years, which with time serve means he's only got about three months left to go! J ay Chase of the NATO 3 has one more pretrial hearing in Chicago on March 23rd - actually at the same time as Tyler Lang's sentencing hearing, though in a different courtroom, before he goes to trial on April 11th. Supporters ask anyone to come out who's able and to continue sending Jay support through letters or mailing softcover books. Stay posted on updates at freethenato3.wordpress.com. Solecast, the excellent anarchist podcast we mentioned at the end of the listener feedback, can be found on it's website here and on iTunes. We highly recommend that you check it out! As we mentioned, anarchist in Belgium are facing repression and prison time for alleged property destruction related to a long struggle against the construction of a Maxi-Prison in Haren. A little more information about the struggle and information about how to send money or otherwise show solidarity can be found here. Our listener Cut Snake wrote in response to our request to send us a list of blogs and websites that publish news of interest to anarchists and antifascists from Australia. This should keep us all busy for a while: DISACCORDS ANARCHIST AFFINITY MELBOURNE ANTIFASCISTS REZZA ANTIFA SLACKBASTARD MELBOURNE ANARCHIST CLUB FTP ZINE MELBOURNE ANARCHIST COMMUNIST GROUP BLACK ROSE JURA BOOKS MUTINY ZINE Huye Hombre Huye, the book we reviewed on today's chopping block, is available from little black cart on their website. The material from our theme segment today was inspired by the new 10-part Crimethinc. Feature critiquing democracy. It's not posted yet, but when it is it'll be up at crimethinc.com. And don't forget to stay tuned to the podcast for our upcoming audio version, plus more information about how to plug into reading groups. The theme segment also mentioned and quoted from another piece called ‘Breaking with Consensus Reality,' from the zine Terror Incognita, released in the U.S. around the time of the Occupy movement. From March 18th to 20th in Athens, Ohio, Appalachia Resist! will host an action camp in to connect environmental justice and social justice efforts in the Appalachian region. Here's how they describe themselves: Appalachia Resist! is a small group of rural activists who use direct action as a tactic to resist the fracking industry in our region. We work and live in a rural working class community that is predominant white. We see that struggles for environmental justice and the ongoing fight for racial justice are linked. We want to articulate that link and find concrete ways to work together to push back against a system that brutalizes and sees as disposable the bodies of low income rural people, people of color, gender nonconforming people, women, native, and undocumented people. Mentioning all these people together should not be a way of erasing difference (this is not “all lives matter”) but a way of seeking actual solidarity based on mutual liberation. This is a monumental task, and we are definitely not experts. But we think it's important and necessary. They're encouraging regional activists working on racial justice, anti-rape culture, prison solidarity and prison abolition, environmental justice and anti-extraction, and other struggles to take part. In Seoul, South Korea, the Anarchist Film Festival of Hannam-dong will open March 24th through 26th at “Take Out Drawing”, an art space standing in defiance of gentrification in downtown Seoul. On April 23rd at Stone Mountain, outside Atlanta, Georgia, there's a big white supremacist rally planned, and anti-fascists around the region are gearing up to shut it down. Check out the website alloutatl.com for more info on the mobilization; it articulates some shared principles that address some of the nuances of diverse anti-racist mobilizations in a particularly thoughtful way. The anarchist book fair season kicks off in earnest in April, with book fairs in Zagreb, Croatia on the 8th through 10th; Dublin, Ireland on the 15th and 16th; Sheffield, UK on the 23rd, Oakland, California on the 26th, and Bristol, UK on the 30th, followed by Bern, Switzerland on May 6th and 7th.
