Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. This week, the team takes our listeners -- and our boss -- up on their recommendations. After Borschel-Dan asked listeners for their favorite stand-up comedians, we received a deluge of responses. We decided to launch our stand-up tour with "Modi: Know Your Audience," which is available freely on YouTube. While both had heard of the very Jewish performer, this was their first-time watching a full-length show. Next, we discuss "The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel," which is now streaming on Netflix. The documentary sheds light on the origins of the still-hot band and focuses on its original guitarist Hillel Slovak. Born in Israel, gifted guitarist Slovak was the catalyst that brought both bassist Flea and lead singer Anthony Kiedis to the music world. For our duo of reviewers, it was a chance to revisit their high school soundtrack. Stick around to see who got the "oy," the "meh" and the "not bad" marks in this week's The Reel Schmooze. Maya Jade Frank joins the podcast to share the fascinating journey of a career that began with a serendipitous audition for her sister's project and led her to the Broadway stages of Evita and Mary Poppins. She opens up about the unique experience of growing up on the road with the 25th Anniversary National Tour of Les Misérables, where she balanced three hours of daily schooling with visits to historical monuments and backstage "Docu-drama" marathons. Maya discusses the transition from being a child actor in New York to a Disney Channel star in Los Angeles, reflecting on how her supportive, non-theatre parents helped her stay grounded while she pursued a "normal" college experience at USC. The conversation dives deep into Maya's impressive ability to merge her creative passions with a sharp business mind. Beyond her current starring role as Zoe Murphy in the South Florida premiere of Dear Evan Hansen, she reveals the inner workings of her digital media company, Mangoes and Bubblegum, and her work as a global Pilates instructor. From her "morning jump around" ritual to early 2000s pop punk to her dreams of performing Shakespeare at the Globe, Maya exemplifies a modern multi-hyphenate artist who prioritizes physical health and analytical data just as much as her vocal warm-ups. Maya Jade Frank is a New York City native whose extensive credits include the Broadway revival of Evita, the final Broadway cast of Mary Poppins, and the 25th Anniversary National Tour of Les Misérables. She received a Daytime Emmy nomination for her work on Nickelodeon's History and Heritage and appeared on Disney Channel's Bizaardvark. A graduate of the University of Southern California and the Royal Academy of Music in London, her recent stage work includes Next to Normal and the UK revival of Be More Chill. Tech has looked unstoppable thanks to AI winners—but a huge part of the market is telling a very different story. In this episode, Simon and Dan break down the brutal valuation reset hitting SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) stocks, with many major names down 30–50%+ despite still-solid underlying businesses. They explain the classic “moats” that made SaaS so powerful—switching costs, ecosystems, and data—and why AI agents and LLM-driven automation are now challenging the seat-based pricing model that many software companies depend on. The discussion moves through a rapid-fire list of well-known SaaS names to unpack what’s driving the drawdowns, where the market may be overreacting, and where the risk of disruption is real. Bottom line: some of these stocks may be turning into genuine value opportunities—but the old playbook may no longer apply, and investors need to underwrite what the business looks like 2–5 years from now, not what it used to be. Reageren? PREVIEW — Bob Zimmerman — Russia Exploits Starlink on the Battlefield. Bob Zimmerman analyzes how the Ukraine war has extended into low-earth orbit through contested control of Starlink satellite communications infrastructure. Zimmerman documents that although SpaceX has publicly supported Ukraine through satellite access denial to Russian military forces, Russia has systematically acquired black-market Starlink terminals, enabling operational control of reconnaissance and attack drones throughout the conflict zone. Zimmerman characterizes this persistent technological challenge as a significant strategic problem that U.S. officials and Ukrainian military command are actively attempting to resolve through terminal tracking, signal disruption, and device authentication protocols, representing an emerging domain of space-age warfare previously unanticipated in terrestrial conflict planning. 1941
From X-Rays to Motion Pictures: Expanding the Photographic Medium — Anika Burgess — Burgess traces the expansion of photographic technology beyond conventional image capture. She examines Alice Austin's intimate and playful photographs documenting her social circle with candid authenticity. The discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Röntgen was rapidly branded as "the new photography" or "shadow photography," adopted swiftly for both entertainment and medical diagnostic applications despite practitioners possessing no understanding of severe radiation hazards. Burgess concludes with Paul Martin's candid street photography using concealed cameras hidden within top hats and Eadweard Muybridge's sequential motion studies, which directly enabled the invention of motion pictures. 1903 FRANCE

In this episode of TSFS, I dive into the intriguing Netflix documentary "Amy Bradley is Missing," discussing the theories surrounding her mysterious disappearance from a cruise ship in 1998 and the emotional impact it has had on her family. I also address the latest gossip about "Sister Wives," confirming that Kody and Robyn have not been fired and that Season 20 is set to air this fall. On a personal note, I share my journey as I navigate my pregnancy, including the ups and downs I've experienced. Additionally, I touch on the legal drama involving Blake Lively and Perez Hilton, as well as the ongoing Coldplay cheating scandal.
