Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
Thanks to those of you who completed the recent survey on how I can serve you better, some changes are coming to the YPM world! While most respondents said they loved the length of the episodes because they appreciate how much detail we can get into in that time, a number of people said they had trouble finding the time to listen to longer episodes, as well as share them with others. Our long episodes aren't going anywhere; I love being able to truly understand an issue and have deep conversations with experts. But I hear you that it can be hard to find an hour to listen! That's why I'm going to start creating summary episodes. This first one summarizes the last two episodes on the topic of video games - both the conversation with @TheGamerEducator Ash Brandin, and my narrated episode on what children learn from video games. You'll get my take-home ideas from both episodes in less than 12 minutes! If you're starting to see the deep learning that children are doing while they're playing video games and want to support them in having more of these kinds of experiences…but without using screens all the time, the You Are Your Child's Best Teacher workshop will help you. We'll help you learn how to use your child's questions and your observations about their interests to support them in deep, intrinsically motivated learning. You'll learn: Learn how to use your child's interests as a jumping off point for deep, self-driven learning Show (to yourself and others!) that your child is engaged in complex, multi-faceted learning Reimagine what learning looks like (it can be exciting and fun, and not something you have to bribe your child to do!) Understand your values about learning so you can do activities that are aligned with those values Be and believe you can be your child's best teacher - whether or not your child is in school We'll get started next Wednesday, so click the banner and sign up now! Jump to Highlights 01:26 Introducing today's episode 02:06 Balancing kids' screen time is a gradual process of sharing responsibility and making adjustments based on their abilities. 03:35 Children are drawn to video games because they meet needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. 03:54 There is no strong evidence that video games cause violence. 05:27 Children can learn about cultural issues like misogyny and violence from video games and other media. 07:19 Video games allow children to actively engage in learning by exploring unique systems and strategies, similar to real scientific thinking. 08:41 Children develop creativity and persistence through video games. 09:18 Invitation to the free You Are Your Child's Best Teacher...
Not a lot of people get to hang out in the Chamber at the Manitoba Legislature besides elected officials, except if you are among the 'nerds' (their word) who participate in Youth Parliament Manitoba (YPM) which takes place for 5 days every year between Christmas and New Years. We get two perspectives in this episode - one from first-time attendee, grade 11 student Loquin Warkentin, and the other from a YPM veteran Lien Huynh. Bonus content: Loquin talks about his experience as lead in the school play.
I hosted a virtual Christmas party in my membership program, Your Platform Matters (YPM). At the party I encouraged a writing exercise: Christmas Reflections. I asked these writers to close their eyes and go back in time to a warm and wonderful Christmas memory from their childhood. Rather than trying to capture a big, sprawling scene, I asked them to zero in on a detail. Using the one-inch frame Anne Lamont talks about in Bird by Bird, they narrowed their focus to a detail that they could see, smell, taste, touch, or hear. We captured those multi-sensory, concrete, specific details in words and phrases, dropping them in the Zoom chat. What a quiet, creative gift it was to share those memories with each other, to go back in time, to reflect...to write. After the party sendoff, I assembled the snapshot memories (with their permission) to create a free verse poem: Christmas Reflections Popcorn captured on strings strung on the tree,Mom, sis, and I around kitchen table, molding memories out of salt dough ornaments.Snowed in with guests, ice skating on the road, fluffy snowflakes falling on faces, magic in the night sky. Carols around the old upright piano—the twinkle in his eye bounced off his rosy cheeks as hisfamily sang the familiar tune.Pinecandlelightblack hairsparkling crystal necklacegreen silkreaching and hitting the high notes. Candles glimmered in hands lighting evening darkness. The lonely ceramic clown tucked in the Nativity scene—family humor nestled amidst the holy.I bend pipe cleaner arms around tree branch—the hand-crafted felt mouse smiles back at me.In the midst of the darknesswe sat in the puddle of light from the tree. Wrapping paper rustling in the night.Excited anticipation waiting at the top of the stairs, kitchen breakfast smells wafting up to us:bacon, sausage, cinnamon buns.We tiptoed down the stairs, our slippers silencing our steps.Cookies set out for Santa—only crumbs in the morning.Fireplace crackling—Santa's in the kitchen!Afraid of men with beards, I was assured thatSanta Claus was gone. Shiny blue bicycle.Silver blue-tinted ball ornament. The young girl looking back at methrough the ornament's reflectionwas full of joyful smiles.Surrounded by the rapidly torn wrapping paper—utter delight. My fingers swiftly undid the twist tiesso I could stroke the loop braidsof my doll come to life from my favorite books. Are we there yet? rang from the backseat.Grandma's house full of warm laughter.Wrapped in blankets on the floorplaying the Authors card gameand Monopoly—the world was clear and bright. Try it! Take a moment to try this yourself. Close your eyes and capture that one-inch square of a warm and wonderful Christmas memory from your childhood. Share it in the comments below. I want to go back in time with you to see, smell, and hear your Christmas reflection. We so enjoyed the magic of creating this in community. I hope you find your writing community, as well. You're always welcome to be part of Your Platform Matters! Merry Christmas from the writers of YPM—and from me! ________________________________
We continue to celebrate Changemakers throughout Women's History Month with Ciara Iglehart, creator of Your Pace Matters and a Brand Ambassador for Black Girls Run. Ciara talks to us about how joining a running club has led to so many positive changes - from encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle for women, to facilitating positive conversations to bring women from various backgrounds together in sisterhood. Ciara also details how YPM and BGR have empowered long-term and positive changes on her communities, not just locally, but nationwide. Lastly, we learn about Ciara's "rock bottom" moment: what led to it, what helped pull her out, and how it has had a lasting effect on Ciara prioritizing her mental health.
Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
In this episode we do something we haven't done before - talk with podcast listeners who aren't parents yet! Kellie and Jon are an amazing couple living in Tennessee. Kellie is a bit of a planner (by which I mean that during her Ph.D program Jon noticed Kellie was getting stressed about when they were going to have a baby, so she led them through a four-hour planning session factoring in the baby's birth and ages at likely dates for her to enter post-doctoral programs and fellowships and landed on February 2021 as the optimal time to conceive - so they started trying in February and she got pregnant in February!). Jon, by contrast, is a go-with-the-flow kind of guy. He's the kind of person who just knows everything is probably going to turn out OK without needing to worry about the details too much. He already knew Kellie was going to be a great parent, while she was much less convinced - although now she knows that babies drink milk rather than water, she's off to a running start! Kellie devoured all the pregnancy podcasts she could find (my favorite is the https://pregnancypodcast.com/ (Pregnancy Podcast) - host Vanessa basically does the same thing I do here at YPM for the pregnancy stage) and then moved onto the child development podcasts, which is how she found YPM - and she was drawn to the research-based information she found here. Jon describes the whole experience as an “uncertainty sandwich” - there was a lot of uncertainty in the beginning about whether and when they'd be able to have a baby: “and then it really certain really fast!” And after that it became uncertain again as they looked to figure out what life with a baby would be like. If you're expecting a baby or have a child under the age of one, the Right From The Start course can help you to find the right path forward for you. We'll help you navigate sleep, feeding, play and development, what we communicate to our babies through the ways we interact during routine activities like diapering and dressing - and so much more. But beyond the knowledge, you'll also find an amazing community of like-minded parents who are on this journey with you - so you'll feel less alone, and more able to cope with the challenges you face. Co-hosts, Noreen and Gennifer, are joined by Carla Blaha, Psychic Medium to talk about the different “Clairs,” (the ways we receive intuitive information through sight, sound, touch, taste and smell).Carla offers fascinating facts and anecdotes about how each of the various “Clairs” works for all of us. You’ll hear YPM superfan Beth share a powerful example with her moving story of the message she received when “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones played on the radio. Carla receives her own healing and breakthrough revelation upon listening to Beth’s story. Disclaimer: Everything we share here is for educational purposes. We asked an FDNY lieutenant how he deals with unrelenting stress, and we’re sharing what he revealed. Have you noticed a spike in undeniable real-life stress over the past weeks? We thought so. Our interview with our mindful, meditating first responder was already scheduled when the world flipped and froze, so we all Zoom’ed in from our quarantined corners for a powerful conversation recorded from our couches and closets. We're honored to bring you our Serenity Now Special Episode, featuring an FDNY lieutenant and OEM first responder in the YPM family. He’s literally part of Noreen’s family; it's her brother Gene O’Donnell — aka g.o.d. Gene completely inspires us from our Corona-daze with his take on showing up consciously and compassionately to ourselves and others when the Unpredictable confronts us. In YPM style, we tilt the philosophical scales towards fun when Gene shares some seriously hilarious stories and the sibling smartasses can’t hold back.Because, hey, we’re here to remind you that life still shines bright beyond the clouds!
