There are a lot of stories about the financial challenges facing schools right now: Seattle School District has a $100 million budget gap they need to close and they're going to be shuttering schools to make ends meet.  Bellevue School District also closed schools to shore up its budget last year. Other districts are looking at million dollar shortfalls and considering school closures or ending programs.  But Marysville School District is facing a particularly challenging landscape. "They have a critically declining financial condition," said Washington State Auditor Pat McCarthy. Her office reviews the finances of all 295 school districts in the state. Their report on Marysville's finances made headlines when it was published last week. McCarthy compared Marysville's situation to Vader School District, which dissolved in 2007 because of severe financial problems. Francesco Restuccia from  Kings College London takes me on a journey through different types of batteries, and what fire challenges relate to them.We discuss how the batteries burn, and how internal systems (Battery Management System) influence that behavior. From the size and type limitations to the potential perils of a cell thermal runaway, the fire spread in the whole batteries, and feedback loops that we need to understand to create safer systems. We'll also shed light on the contrasting battery lives of consumer electronics, laptops, and cars, as well as some challenges in the second life of batteries.In the final leg of our journey, we will tackle the complex world of modeling batteries and their management systems, touching on the challenges of over-constraint equations and calculating heat release rates from off-gassing.

Pretty much everyone you talk to these days has some emotions related to the country, gun control, global warming, or the war in Ukraine with an awareness of being overwhelmed. What isn't reliably there is the question, Do I want to care for this emotion and How can I navigate in the world with some positivity? Robert and Dave will continue their focus from last week with specific challenges unique to the anxiety, fear, anger, and terror many of us are experiencing in response to the dire problems facing the planet and the increased authoritarianism in the world today. If more people were committed to what their needs were and not committed to their emotions, it has the potential to start the stepping stones to stop war and start much needed contemplation. Instead of being dominated by our emotions, we would be dominated by our wisdom and our hearts. Robert continues to use The Introspective Guides as a tool to navigate a path towards integrating what challenges us individually. Starting with caring for ourselves, and our loved ones and then exponentially moving our concern outward into our communities, country, and the world. It can feel easier to avoid and not to be aware of, what some people would call burdensome work, but it is through this journey our most fulfilled selves become accessible.
