On this episode of Conversations with Changemakers, we speak with Jonathan Freeland. While some of you know Jonathan as my long-time Associate, he is best known as a musician and songwriter based in Nashville, TN. What you may not know is Jonathan's artistic and entrepreneurial journey: from early training at the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts to professional training at the Joffrey Ballet School and Point Park University. After graduating and working in musicals like West Side Story, Million Dollar Quartet, and Carousel, Jonathan was also always writing music and performing with bands.  If that wasn't enough to keep him busy, he was also constantly focused on developing one of his many creative skills: photography, graphic design, website design, and product design—including his now shelved but delicious Day Dreamer Coffee Company. I wanted to have Jonathan on to speak about creativity—particularly sharing some behind-the-scenes on releasing his genre-breaking “Emo Country” music. He released his first solo EP, “Young & Proud” in 2018, and the title track was placed at the top of the Alternative Press' “New Alternative” playlist on Spotify. He's since released 9 singles featuring artists including Less Gravity and Kevin Jordan of This Wild Life and a self produced live album. 19. Expose the elephant in the room

As I mentioned yesterday in Tip#18, as someone who is looking to build your thought leadership - be mindful of the tactics you follow as you continue to build your reputation as a trusted authority.   It matters. Rather than following the same ol ‘hack this' and ‘hack that' visibility tactics - focus on the insights, hindsight, and foresight that only YOU can bring to the conversation through your years of experience and knowledge. Because it's the wisdom and knowledge YOU bring through longevity in your industry that matters! Showcase THAT as you build your thought leadership collateral. Another way to do that is to:  Expose the elephant in the room.  What is a mistruth or a mistake that your ideal client is not aware of and perhaps is something other providers in your industry are still teaching? Address it and share what your ideal clients should be doing instead.   One of the elephants in the room for me when it comes to helping businesses start their podcast – is the fixation on the number of downloads their podcast is getting. I'm sure you've heard the term Vanity Numbers – where people get caught up in the number of likes and shares and comments, and when it comes to podcasting the number of downloads. So, instead of focusing on Vanity Numbers – I encourage people to focus on and build Reputation Equity – because Reputation Equity is bankable, whereas Vanity numbers are not.  What do I mean when I say Reputation Equity is bankable – well this entire 30DaysToDistinction Challenge covers important insights and tips on how to build your reputation as that trusted authority. And, when you've got a reputation for bringing valuable insights and a reputation of delivering results – people hire you.  It was building Reputation Equity with my podcast – Ambitious Entrepreneur Show that saw several people message me and ask if I would consider selling my podcast after I announced I was stopping production. That's the Reputation I had built over the years for that podcast and compelled people to reach out and enquire. Cheryl Giovannoni is CEO of The Girls Day School Trust (GDST), a cohort of 25 independent schools that encourage girls to learn without limits. With alumni including Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham Carter, Afua Hirsch, Miriam Margolyes, and Mary Beard, among many others, the Trust schools look to develop character beyond curriculum and individual progression for each of its students. The GDST was founded in 1872 by four pioneering women and Suffragettes, Mrs Maria Grey, her sister Miss Emily Shirreff, Lady Stanley of Alderley and Miss Mary Gurney. They believed that girls should be entitled to the same academic education as their brothers. Today, with 19,000 students and almost 4000 staff, the Trust has doubled down on its commitment to work with future generations of women who will change the world for the better, for us all. Cheryl joins Michael on Change Makers to discuss the education landscape in the UK today, the power of learning to shape lives, and leadership lessons from her career in advertising as well as education ahead of her speech at the National Coalition of Girls Schools' Global Forum in Boston, next week.

“What is it we need to do as a society to lift up our most vulnerable population?” asks Niambe McIntosh, daughter of Peter Tosh and fierce advocate for prison reform, cannabis legalization, and justice everywhere. Peter Tosh is the legendary Grammy Award-winning reggae musician and, along with Bob Marley, founding member of The Wailers. Known for the passionate political and social messaging in his songs, Tosh was tragically killed during a home invasion in 1987 when Niambe was only five-years-old. Today, Niambe is head of the Peter Tosh Legacy & Brand and founder of the Peter Tosh Foundation, where she carries on her father's message and memory. In 2017, her brother Jawara was incarcerated for cannabis possession in New Jersey. After a brutal attack in prison led to Jawara's death, Niambe threw herself into the world of prison reform. 16. Authenticity is NOT a buzzword

Ever heard the saying ‘Marketers ruin everything?" EVERY Tom, Dick, and Harry (sorry to all of the Tom, Dick, and Harry's out there – no offense to you) however just making my point that every sadly unscrupulous marketer under the sun – jumps on the bandwagon overusing something so much – that it can become tarnished.  An example where that happened recently was a technology platform I invested in, it was still in Beta with a promise to be an incredible solution. However, unbeknownst to the developers, there were a handful of people who had been using the email system to send out so many unsolicited emails the developers had to shut the entire email system down for months and months while they sorted out the issue of being black listed. It was terrible and a great example of how marketers – especially the unscrupulous marketers ruin everything.  Another example is when certain words and phrases are used. Personally, I despise the word ‘hack' and ‘Hack this and hack that' I would hear that word over and over on my podcast – years ago to the point I'd cringe every time I heard it.  Now one word that has been used and (in some instances) overused and abused is the word ‘authenticity,' marketers talk about authenticity when they were anything but authentic in their approach and with their marketing.  For me the word ‘authentic' is integral. My leading Brand Archetype is Explorer and the Explorer is all about pioneering the discovery of our truth. So, words such as unique, individual, and authentic are words that express what I stand for, and what I help people with – helping them identify what's unique and authentic for them and helping them bring that out into their marketing and content.  So, for me Authenticity when it comes to your personal Brand (and my background in personal branding) is integral. This is why one of my core personal branding principles is Authenticity is NOT a buzzword – it's paramount.  Because the opposite of authenticity is fake, which is why I cringe when I hear other marketers tell their clients – just make up a story. Just fake it. Yuk! You're a change-maker and change-makers don't fake things, they don't lie.  Instead, being authentic means being genuine and being REAL. The real deal!   So, over to you. Finally, some optimism for future generations! First, in Australia, the massive success of the so-called ‘teal' female candidates, who are not aligned to either of the major political parties, but have essentially swept to power across a number of states. This, along with long-awaited Labour victories…Does this mean the climate wars are over in Australia? We dialed up Dean Bialek, lead negotiator and legal advisor to the world's island states (AOSIS) in negotiations that led to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change and current Head of Policy & International Strategy at CWP Global, to give us a quick update on what this major swing in Australian politics means for climate! And for our main interview this week, we sit down with Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales. Her role is linked to the Welsh Government's 2015 Wellbeing and Future Generations Act, which requires public bodies in Wales to think about the long-term impact of their decisions. Described by the Big Issue Magazine as one of the UK's leading Changemakers, her interventions have secured fundamental changes to land use planning policy, major transport schemes and Government policy on housing - ensuring that decisions taken today are fit for the future, and especially future generations in Wales.
