In this episode of Your Week with St. Luke's, Pastor Jenn continues the Change Makers series by exploring the parable of the Good Samaritan through a fresh lens. She challenges us to shift from passive belief to active discipleship—starting right where we are. Drawing on scripture, historical context, and insights from theologians, Pastor Jenn reminds us that mercy is more than a feeling—it's a costly, boundary-breaking action rooted in love. Just as the Samaritan came near, risking comfort and safety to care for a stranger, we too are called to see those in need right in front of us and act with compassion, regardless of differences. True change, she says, begins when we let mercy—not fear or prejudice—define our faith and choose to be a neighbor to those God places in our path. The challenges they face extend beyond scaling a business or managing operations; they wrestle with the pressure of delivering meaningful social change while also keeping a wary eye on their bottom line. That's why Caroline Diehl MBE, Founder and CEO of Social Founders, has dedicated herself to supporting the well-being of the people behind these organizations. She's not focused on the nuts and bolts of business planning or marketing. Instead, Caroline is building a global network that supports founders themselves, giving them a space to connect, decompress and recharge. As Caroline explained on today's episode, “It's amazing how some of the most experienced and brilliant social founders in our network still say that they feel lonely. They feel that they can't talk really openly to their board or to their management team. They can't constantly dump on their partner back at home. And they love the idea of connecting with other founders.”She's quick to note that the ecosystem for social impact founders doesn't match what's available to tech founders. “If you're a tech founder, you're on to a good thing. But if you're a charity founder or a social entrepreneur, it's pretty tough. And there's not much support for the actual founder.”Caroline's approach is all about founder well-being. Social Founders doesn't duplicate what others do. Instead, they partner with organizations offering practical business help, like the UK's School for Social Entrepreneurs, while focusing on the founder's mental and emotional health. “We're there for the well-being of the founder, which in turn helps that founder be a better founder,” Caroline said. The double bottom line—delivering both social impact and financial sustainability—adds another layer of complexity. Caroline captured this tension: “Sometimes you can create more social impact without having to focus on the money all the time and vice versa. If you're focusing on the money all the time, then you end up just maybe selling lots of mugs or stickers or something and not doing enough social impact.”Changemakers need not go it alone. Social Founders offers a global community, recognizing the value of peer support and connection. If you're building a social enterprise or founding a charity, consider joining the movement at socialfounder.org. You'll find a group of like-minded leaders who understand your challenges—and a network designed to help you thrive.tl;dr:Caroline Diehl MBE founded Social Founders to support the well-being of social enterprise and charity founders. She highlights the loneliness and unique pressures founders face, especially balancing impact and financial sustainability.Caroline emphasizes building networks over business advice, prioritizing emotional and peer support for changemakers. Her superpower, positive energy, has fueled her success and resilience across multiple impactful organizations.Listeners are invited to join Social Founders' global network for community, inspiration and support. How to Develop Positive Energy As a SuperpowerCaroline described her superpower as “positive energy.” She explained, “Whoever I'm talking to, whether I'm meeting some grand poobah running some big company or the people that I really love who are the grassroots founders and changemakers, or whether I'm just on my own… I can call on a superpower inside me of positive energy and make that happen.” Even during difficult times, when doubt creeps in, Caroline channels this positive energy to keep moving forward, whether she's running marathons or building impactful organizations.Illustrative Story:After founding the Media Trust and Together TV, Caroline started Social Founders from scratch, with no investment capital and little personal financial security. She had to convince funders, opinion leaders and founders from diverse backgrounds to join her network. Despite being “not young anymore,” she relied on her positive energy to inspire and mobilize others. Caroline shared that much of her energy comes from the people she meets—like a renowned Japanese dancer who supports people with learning difficulties through dance, or a young entrepreneur in Japan helping formerly incarcerated youth start businesses. These encounters continually fuel her own drive.Actionable Tips for Developing Positive Energy:Focus on your love for your mission and your passionate belief in the change you want to make.Keep reminders—like sticky notes with meaningful messages—visible in your workspace.Connect regularly with the people you aim to help; their stories can renew your motivation. When energy is low, spend time outdoors: go for a walk, bike ride or simply get fresh air.By following Caroline's example and advice, you can make positive energy a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileCaroline Diehl MBE (she/her):Founder and CEO, Social FoundersAbout Social Founders: Social Founders is the global network for social impact founders - we connect, support and celebrate founders of charities, social enterprises and community organisations.Website: socialfounder.orgCompany Facebook Page: facebook.com/socialfoundernetworkLinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/social-foundersInstagram Handle: @social.founders Biographical Information: Caroline Diehl MBE is a highly experienced Founder, CEO, Chair and Entrepreneur working across the Creative Industries, Broadcast & Digital Media, Social Enterprise and Charity sectors. Climate change has led the Northern Rivers has been inundated by flood and flood threats, but it has also shown Australia - and the world - what it looks like to lead a community response to climate change. In this episode we talk with Rebecca McNaught, a community researcher on disaster response who shares with us how the community did respond to the extreme floods in 2022, and what all communities can learn from what they did.Bec has decades of experience in community-led climate work, having worked across the Pacific and the world before focusing on researching best practice in community strategies. She was undertaking field work when the 2022 floods began, and she helped lead emergency support with others in her neighbourhood before she finished her PhD documenting best practice. In this conversation she argues that big concepts like "climate change adaptation" and creating climate infrastructure are at their heart about building strong social bonds between people who can be there for each other when dialling 000 no longer works. For more on the Northern Rivers Community Resilience Alliance see here. For information on the University of Sydney's University Centre for Rural Health see here. For more on ChangeMakers check us out:Via our Website - https://changemakerspodcast.org (where you can also sign up to our email list!)On Facebook, Instagram, Threads - https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMakersPodcast/Blue Sky Social - changemakerspod.bsky.aocial & amandatattersall.bsky.socialOn X/Twitter - @changemakers99 or @amandatattsOn LinkedIn - Amanda.Tattersall Hosted on Acast. Vukosi Marivate helps to build scientific communities and networks for African researchers in machine learning and artificial intelligence. These include Deep Learning Indaba, an events and awards programme inspired by the siZulu word for gathering. Marivate, a computer scientist at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, says Indaba came about to “bring together the African community to strengthen machine learning, so that we can contribute, shape and ultimately be our own owners of these coming technologies.”Marivate also co-founded the startup Lelapa AI, inspired this time by the Setswana word for home. An early project for the company, which aims to be a home for the top AI talent and researchers in Africa, was to build natural language processing systems for Africa languages. There are more than 2000 of them, he says. The computer scientist, based at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, is the fourth researcher to feature in this eight-part Changemakers podcast series. It accompanies an ongoing Nature Q&A series that highlights scientists who fight racism in science and champion inclusion at work. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We know that our 'democracy' is, in fact, a kleptocracy that is not fit for purpose IF that purpose is the continuation of complex life on earth. The sociopaths who have stolen control show no signs of shifting to something that works, so it's way past time that ordinary people across all walks of life embraced the tools of participatory democracy and wrought the new system that we need - a new House of the People which would, finally, accrue power to those with wisdom and enact governance of, for and by the people and the planet. To do this, we need people who are intimately aquainted with these tools, who live them, breathe them, find joy and creativity in them and know how to share them in ways ordinary people understand. Our House is a collective that exists to do exactly this and in today's episode, we're talking to Katy Rubin and Oli Whittington, two of its core team, to find out what it does and how and why - and, crucially, where it could take us if we all jump on board. Katy Rubin is a Legislative Theatre practitioner and strategist based in the UK. She is founder of The People Act hub for creative civic practice. She works in partnership with local and national governments, advocacy organizations, and community groups to co-create equitable and innovative public policy through participatory processes that are joyful, creative, and inclusive. Katy is also a member of the Our House UK collective, a Senior Fellow with People Powered: Global Hub for Participatory Democracy, and a Senior Atlantic Fellow at London School of Economics, as well as former executive director of Theatre of the Oppressed NYC. Her Legislative Theatre work with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority was awarded the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy's 2022 award for Best Practice in Citizen Participation.Oli Whittington is the initiator and co-lead of Our House, drawing on his background in participatory design and democracy. Oli's work has focused on unpacking and addressing the concentration of power, including leading democratic innovation at Nesta, Shift Design's participation practice, and as a participatory designer in Arup's urban innovation studio.Together, they are working around all four nations of the UK to help bring the tools of participatory democracy to communities of place, purpose and passion. They are helping to facilitate local participatory processes with a view to creating National Charters for each Nation and then bringing people together to decide whether we want a united Charter for the whole of the UK or remain separate. To me, creating a governance system that is fit for purpose is absolutely essential to our moving forward through the pinch point of the Great Transition. If we can't find coherent, constructive, compassionate, courageous ways to work together, we're sunk—and while there might be courageous, compassionate people within the current system, the overall system is not any of these. So I dearly hope that by the end of this, you'll want to become involved. And if you're listening to this podcast as it goes out on the 16th of July 2025, you should know that there's an online event on the 18th which in an open invitation to anyone, anywhere who wants to start building an open democracy. Please do sign up, there's a link in the show notes. Rana Dajani studies epigenetics of trauma in vulnerable communities around the world. A molecular biologist based at the Hashemite University in Zarqa, Jordan, her research explores what genes are turned on and off through trauma and if they are transferred to future generations. In the second episode of an eight-part podcast series to accompany Nature's Changemakers in science Q&A series, collection, Dajani, a daughter of refugees, talks about some formative influences and how she now collaborates with Jordan's Circassian and Chechen populations, who were violently evicted from their homelands almost two hundred years ago. “I had a treasure trove in my backyard to discover novel gene risk factors for disease that nobody else had discovered, because of their very unique gene pool,” she says.Changemakers launched last year as a follow-up to the journal's Racism in Science special issue.Listen to launch editor Kendall Powell discuss the series' aims and objectives with Deborah Daley, global chair of Springer Nature's Black Employee Network. Today I'm sitting down with someone I've known for quite some time. Watching her grow, build, reinvent, and create from the inside out has been inspiring, and honestly, a little wild, in the best way. Cynthia Mensah-Neglokpe is the founder of clicqui and KORE. In this conversation, we talked about starting over, more than once. About what burnout really looks like when you're the one everyone counts on. And how community, when done right, can quite literally bring you back to yourself. You'll hear how Cynthia went from managing luxury brands to building grassroots spaces in four cities, all while figuring out how to protect her energy and build something that actually lasts. If you've ever thought about creating something real, something that connects people and still keeps you whole. This one's for you.Let's get into it. In this episode of Let's Hear It, Eric sits down with two public interest comms powerhouses—Ann Searight Christiano and Angela Bradbury—who've just dropped what might be the most anticipated textbook in our field: Public Interest Communications Strategy for Change Makers. T Ann and Angela share how their years in the trenches at places like the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Public Citizen shaped this groundbreaking resource—and why storytelling, systems thinking, and listening (really listening) are the keys to actually making change. They discuss their “six spheres of influence,” the “back-of-the-envelope” strategy tool, and why being strategic isn't the same as shouting into the void (no offense to your latest TikTok brainstorm). It's a lively, insightful conversation filled with warmth, humility, and a generous dose of “finally, someone wrote this down.” If you've ever had a boss say, “just make it go viral,” this one's for you. Enjoy the episode—and if you love it, don't forget to follow, rate, and review. Your support helps others find the show (and helps keep us off TikTok, which we would suck at).

In light of the release of Victoria's landmark truth telling inquiry, we are re-releasing this important ChangeMaker Chat with Terri Janke, one of Australia's leading advocates for the recognition of Indigenous cultural and intellectual property. --------Terri Janke is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lawyer who uses the law to protect and advance Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property. As a Meriam and Wuthathi woman who grew up in Cairns in northern Queensland, for over 20 years she has crafted a set of legal instruments that allow for the protection of Indigenous Culture. From an Indigenous perspective, Culture is the embodiment of life, and it can be represented in anything from art to dance, from bones to research. She is well recognised across Australia for her work in protecting Indigenous Culture using a series of True Track protocols that enable Indigenous Culture to be recognised as intellectual property. Here she explains her journey and how she found the law. She explores her ICIP principles and then applies them to the process of research, and in particular Country-based ‘placed-based' research. This is a powerful conversation for non-Indigenous listeners as Terri generously shares an Indigenous perspective on Culture that is very different to white understandings of culture. For more about Terri's work you can visit her website – https://www.terrijanke.com.au/. My friends McArthur Krishna and Anne Pimentel (authors, BYU grads, advocates for those on the margins) join us to talk about their important new book (at Deseret Book and Amazon) called “Changemakers: Women Who Bolding Built Zion” The podcast/book covers important topics: How revelation is “scattered” How women led changing the Church Institution with Primary and Relief Society How most of the change we can impact is in our local area around culture Anne's racial awakening—and her desire to help people of other races feel belonging The “Back Yard Principle” Supporting those who leave the church Why McArthur and Anne (knowing all the complicated issues) stay in the Church Why McArthur hopes the Church her daughters are raised in is different than the Church she was raised in—and how we should embrace change Importance of personal authority If you are looking to improve church culture to better create Zion so more feel welcome, I encourage you to read/share this book. It has real-life stories and perspectives/principles to help each of us. I wish I had read a book like this a long time ago. I encourage everyone to listen to the podcast, read the book—and share with others. Thank you, McArthur and Anne, for your needed work in our community. Honored to have you on the podcast!
