Joined on this episode by the one and only Tom Richardson, retired FDNY Chief of Department!Chief Richardson walks the walk, serving 42 years with the FDNY, rising through every rank to lead as the top uniformed officer in the busiest fire department in the nation. A lifelong firefighter, he's been a volunteer in Deer Park since 1978 (serving as Chief of Department there in 1999-2000 and 2009-2011) and currently serves on the Board of Fire Commissioners. He holds a Master of Arts in Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School - Center for Homeland Defense and Security, along with extensive leadership training including the FDNY Advanced Leadership Course, Fire Officers Management Institute, and West Point's Combating Terrorism Center. We're going deep into leadership in the fire service - everything from command presence, to the critical importance of trust in the firehouse and on the fireground, building crews that operate with implicit authority (no constant micromanaging), the make-or-break role of the first hoseline, staffing and response challenges facing the volunteer fire service, and effective communication with the troops. Hard-earned lessons from the highest levels of command, and practical wisdom that applies to every firefighter and officer out there. As always, the live audience one hundred percent light this one up with questions, and we go wherever the conversation takes us. Eileen Bellew joins Anita and Mel to talk about the sudden death of her husband, John, on January 23, 2005 also known as "Black Sunday," one of the deadliest days in FDNY history. Her husband, FDNY firefighter John Bellew, was one of six firefighters trapped in a Bronx apartment fire. The day became known as "Black Sunday" because three FDNY firefighters died in two separate fires that day.In the years that followed, Eileen found herself navigating not only grief but also civil and criminal court proceedings, raising four children, and trying to make sense of a tragedy that became front page news of the New York Times. She later wrote the memoir After John Jumped, chronicling the experience and everything that came after.Eileen speaks candidly about the debilitating anxiety that followed John's death and the feeling that if she could just stay vigilant enough, maybe she could prevent another disaster. As a parent, she struggled with the fear of being caught off guard again, always scanning the horizon for the next terrible thing. She also shares an observation that many widowed parents will recognize immediately: when her children lost their father, they lost parts of their mother, too. Grief changed her capacity, her energy, and her ability to show up in the ways she once had, adding another layer of loss for the entire family. For more info about Eileen, her book, and the future film based on John, visit: https://eileenbellew.com/ Support the show

Stay connected with us at americangroundradio.com, on Facebook, and Instagram. You're listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for May 26, 2026. We open with New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani's plan to seize properties from so-called negligent landlords and transfer them to tenant or community ownership — and we explain exactly why this is not a housing policy, it's a blueprint for ending private ownership in New York City. We walk through the deliberately manufactured cycle — impose rent controls that make maintenance financially impossible, wait for the slumlords those rent controls created to fall behind on upkeep, then seize the properties they could no longer afford to maintain — and explain why this is not a bug in the socialist playbook, it is the feature. In our Top 3, U.S. and Iran negotiations continue as American forces struck Iranian boats laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran fired missiles at U.S. ships, those missiles were shot down, and the U.S. destroyed the launchers. President Trump says progress is being made and suggests the end state should include all Arab nations joining the Abraham Accords. Then Texas voters headed to the polls for the Republican Senate runoff between incumbent John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton — with Trump backing Paxton but Paxton carrying the baggage of an impeachment, an acquittal, and his wife filing for divorce citing biblical reasons in the middle of the campaign. And a federal three-judge panel blocked Alabama from using its current congressional map — creating a collision between the 2023 Supreme Court ruling that required a minority-majority district and last month's ruling that struck down racial gerrymandering as unconstitutional. Our American Mamas Terry Netterville and Kimberly Burleson tackle why there are no good teen TV shows anymore — which leads directly into a conversation about Euphoria, the Sidney Sweeney show that markets itself to teenagers while featuring content that is essentially soft-core pornography. We talk about whether Sweeney will one day regret the roles she accepted, whether the show's director is deliberately using her to make a political statement, and how decades of progressive cultural influence in Hollywood have normalized things on screen that no parent would allow in their home. In our Digging Deep segment, we push back on the left's Memorial Day weekend obsession with George Floyd — and use the data to make the case that the income inequality, incarceration disparity, and educational gap the left attributes to institutional racism are explained far more powerfully by a single variable that has nothing to do with race. We lay out median income, two-parent household rates, high school graduation rates, and incarceration rates broken down by race — Asian, white, Hispanic, and black — and show that the rankings are identical across every single category. The highest-earning, lowest-incarcerated, highest-graduating group in America is also the group most likely to be raised in a two-parent home. We call it what the data actually shows — two-parent privilege. And we make the case that no amount of government spending or racial grievance politics will fix an outcome problem that is actually a family structure problem. We also cover Trump's perfect annual physical exam — and note with some sadness that there are people in this country actively rooting for him to have failed it. We contrast that with how those on the right responded to Joe Biden's declining health — not with celebration, but with concern for the country. For our Bright Spot, a Gold Star widow named Cheryl Ann Shaw posted on social media asking if anyone visiting Arlington Cemetery over Memorial Day weekend would take a fresh photo of her husband's grave — Staff Sergeant Alan W. Shaw, killed in Iraq in 2007. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard — who is stepping down from her position to care for her husband who is battling a rare form of cancer — saw the post, drove to Arlington, placed a coin on Sergeant Shaw's grave, and posted the photo herself. She didn't have to. She did anyway. Mrs. Shaw responded that seeing Gabbard standing there brought her to tears — and thanked her for saying his name and reminding her there are still people in this country who have not forgotten the cost of freedom. We also note that even after losing their entire military infrastructure, Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khomeini is still posting death to America and death to Israel on social media. And we close with off-duty FDNY firefighter Travis Langan, who saw a woman trapped in a flooding Tesla on Jackie Robinson Parkway during flash floods in New York City, jumped on the roof, and pounded through the sunroof with his bare hands until he could pull her out. She said God sent her an angel. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. “Behind every heroic firefighter, there is a man that has many, many different lives that we should be honoring also.” – Eileen Bellew, FDNY widowWe welcome Eileen Bellew, author of After John Jumped, for a deeply moving conversation about surviving profound loss, mothering through grief, and finding hope after tragedy. Eileen recounts the heartbreaking events of January 23, 2005, known as Black Sunday, when her husband John, a dedicated FDNY firefighter, lost his life in the line of duty. She shares the agonizing hours of uncertainty, the moment she said goodbye, and the challenges of facing unimaginable PTSD with four young children.Navigating grief in the public eye, Eileen describes trying to protect her children's innocence amidst intense media scrutiny, endless ceremonies, and the ongoing pain of public memorials. She discusses the multi-layered aspects of widowhood—how it altered her very identity, changed her approach to motherhood, and left her grappling with PTSD, anxiety, and the daunting question: “How do I rebuild?”Key takeaways from this episode:There is no right way to handle tragedy or grief—every decision is raw and personal.Support often means simply sitting in the muck with someone, rather than trying to “fix” their pain. The loss of a spouse can mean losing parts of yourself, but over time healing and resilience do grow—even if it takes years.Remarriage is not a replacement but a new chapter. You can love again while holding your lost loved one close.Eileen's journey is also chronicled in her memoir, which began as a legacy for her kids and grew into a beacon for others facing similar paths.Learn more about Eileen Bellew, her book, After John Jumped, and the upcoming Black Sunday movie at eileenbellew.com.Get the "Who Am I Now?" Somewhere along the line, somebody looked at Draw Fours and said, “You know what this family game needs? //The Wire//2300Z April 30, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: TERRORISM CONCERNS REMAIN IN UNITED KINGDOM. UKRAINIAN TARGETING OF RUSSIAN OIL INFRASTRUCTURE CONTINUES. OIL MARKET REMAINS VOLATILE AS GULF WAR REMAINS STAGNANT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----  -International Events-Lebanon: The ceasefire has mostly collapsed, with fighting resuming between Hezbollah and the IDF. Several FPV drone strikes have targeted Israeli armor in the border regions of Lebanon over the past few days, and Israeli forces continue to mandate the evacuation of the newly created "buffer zone" south of the Litani River.United Kingdom: Counterterrorism policing operations have continued in the wake of the Golders Green attack yesterday, with authorities confirming that the suspect who conducted the stabbing is of Somali origin. The individual has been identified as Essa Suleiman, an individual who had previously been arrested for stabbing two police officers back in 2008. After this incident, he was incarcerated and a flagged as a potential terrorist threat under the Prevent program in 2020. At some point he was released and/or escaped the mental institution he was confined to, before conducting the stabbing yesterday. This morning, the national terrorism threat level was raised to SEVERE, meaning that further terror attacks are highly likely.Russia: Ukrainian targeting efforts throughout the nation have increased over the past few weeks, as Ukrainian forces pivot to targeting Russian oil terminals and refineries. The Lukoil petroleum refinery in Perm was hit overnight, along with the Tuapse Refinery on the Black Sea coast.Analyst Comment: This pivot to targeting Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant (POL) facilities began in earnest last October, after a prolonged period of stagnation along the various front lines. As the war has been going on for a long time now, these targeting efforts received little attention outside the various communities observing the war. From Ukraine's perspective, these targeting efforts are perfectly reasonable, but for the rest of the world, the timing of this is going to cause an already tenuous oil market to increasingly be threatened. With the Middle East oil markets severely stifled by the Gulf War, the footnote that Russia is one of the largest producers of energy in the world has become a rather important detail. Russian oil refineries being blown up by the Ukrainians, while President Trump has alluded to the war continuing for some time, is almost certain to have follow-on effects which will (in the short term) drive up costs for nearly everything.-HomeFront-New York: This morning an explosion was reported at a residence in Queens. The incident began after one suspect (who has been identified as Anrup Parasram) attempted to break in to the residence, where his wife was living. A domestic disturbance developed, which involved the suspect attempting to conduct a stabbing attack. As authorities arrived on scene, the suspect barricaded himself inside the structure, before setting the house (and himself) on fire. A few moments later, the house exploded, possibly due to the suspect filling the home with natural gas. So far only minor injuries have been reported among responders, and the suspect remains "unaccounted for" per the FDNY.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Yesterday Brent crude futures briefly jumped to $120/bbl upon the news of the strategic situation regarding the war in the Middle East. In addition to the UAE announcing their departure from OPEC, diplomatic efforts to end the war are stagnant at best and President Trump has indicated that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will be in place on more of a long-term basis. Yesterday, a post was made on President Trump's Truth Social account referencing a "nonnuclear deal". Though the meaning of this is not perfectly clear (and thus can be interpreted in any numbe

Dave goes on a classic rant about ads vs Patreon, breaking down the cost to “25 cents a day,” before spiraling into plans for DopeyCon — including a long-shot idea to book Steve Jones during the CBGB Festival. A voicemail delivers pure Dopey chaos: a listener recounts taking acid, drinking, and shooting whiskey bottles in his basement, ultimately blowing apart his finger with a ricochet and attempting to cover it up using an angle grinder. The episode then pivots to a legendary Dopey story from Bill Blaber. After falling deep into crystal meth addiction, Bill describes wandering New York City in full paranoia, convinced AOL was responsible for ruining his life. This leads him to break into a building, climb to the roof, scale a water tower, and pass out inside. He's rescued by the FDNY, greeted by news cameras, and somehow avoids jail by fabricating a story — landing instead in a psych hold. Dave calls it one of the greatest Dopey stories ever before transitioning into an interview with Michael Imperioli, who discusses his early acting career, Goodfellas, working with Scorsese, and the infamous glass-breaking stunt that landed him in the hospital. In this episode of EMS One-Stop, Rob Lawrence travels to New York City to sit down with Lillian Bonsignore, the 37th Commissioner of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY). A 30-plus year veteran who rose through the ranks of EMS — from EMT in the South Bronx to Chief of EMS and now Commissioner — Bonsignore brings a ground-up understanding of the largest fire-EMS system in the United States. She reflects on stepping into the role as “walking onto a fast-moving train,” immediately confronted with major incidents, severe weather and system pressures, while simultaneously building her leadership team and setting direction for the future. | MORE: ‘We have to right the ship': FDNY commissioner doubles down on EMS pay parity The conversation explores the unique structure of FDNY, where the Commissioner operates as the executive leader “almost like CEO of the company,” while operational command sits with the Chief of Department. Bonsignore is clear-eyed about the scale and demands of the system: over 2.2 million runs annually, with 1.6 million EMS-related, reinforcing her long-held position that EMS must be treated as an essential service with appropriate funding and career pathways. Drawing on her experience leading through the COVID-19 pandemic and responding on Sept. 11, 2001, she emphasizes resilience, communication and presence — being visible in stations, honest with staff and committed to supporting those who “leave their own families behind to go serve a stranger.” Bonsignore also addresses criticism of her appointment directly and without hesitation, framing it as a misunderstanding of the Commissioner's role and the realities of modern emergency response. She underscores that FDNY is both fire and EMS, and that her career — spanning 9/11 response, pandemic leadership and decades of frontline service — positions her to lead the entire enterprise. Looking ahead, she speaks to the need for infrastructure investment, workforce stabilization, mental health support, and the thoughtful adoption of technologies such as AI and body-worn cameras. As FDNY approaches the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and the nation's 250th year, her focus remains clear: support the workforce, strengthen the system, and prepare the department for the next generation of service. Key quotes from Commissioner Bonsignore “Walking into a position like this is like walking onto a fast-moving train.” “I understand the ground level challenges that go on because I lived them.” “The commissioner is the administrative level, almost like CEO of the company.” “We're responding to over 2.2 million runs a year … 1.6 million of those runs are EMS-related runs.” “We have to stabilize our system … it's time that EMS is finally treated as an essential service.” “I will always tell you the truth. You may not like my truth, but I will give it to you.” “The decision of a first responder is to leave their own families behind … to go serve a stranger.” “They are literally your heroes … they will put their lives on the line for you.” Episode timeline 01:10 – First 100 days as Commissioner — “fast-moving train” 02:30 – Career journey and EMS roots shaping leadership 04:30 – Workforce trust, credibility and lived experience 06:30 – Pay parity and EMS as an essential service 09:00 – Structure of FDNY — Commissioner vs. operational command 11:30 – Setting direction and stabilizing the organization 13:30 – Relationship with the Mayor and political leadership 17:30 – Addressing criticism and misconceptions 19:30 – Leading through COVID — scale, innovation, mutual aid 23:30 – Morale, resilience and leadership presence 26:30 – Recruitment and retention challenges 30:30 – AI and future innovation in EMS 32:30 – Behavioral health response and BeHeard program 36:30 – First responder mental health and support systems 38:30 – Violence against EMS and workforce protection 41:00 – Body-worn cameras and transparency 43:30 – 9/11 reflections and legacy 50:30 – Commemoration planning and future outlook Enjoying the show? No verification of the poster's identity surfaced, and the claim remains unsubstantiated—with media and investigators treating it as an unverified tip rather than a credible leak.  Iran, Patriotism, Fed-Up White Working Class, Fighting Authoritarians, Will He Run for Office? Opening Day and A Little Yankees Red Sox Smack Talk. FDNY vs NYPD Hockey! Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff chops it up with Dropkick Murphys fiery and beloved frontman Ken Casey for a high-energy, no-BS conversation about patriotism, protest, and pushing back on authoritarianism at home and abroad. From Red Sox–Yankees trash talk and World Series rings to Ukraine, ICE, Iran and Trump, Ken explains why the band has spent 30 years standing with workers, veterans, cops, firefighters and immigrants—and why staying loud now is a moral obligation, not a branding choice. The Dropkick Murphys are loved and respected worldwide. And if you don't know them already, after this episode, you'll understand why.  Ken and Paul dig into how Trump and MAGA captured huge parts of the white working class, how the “algorithm” changed people we thought we knew, and why courage from artists can help millions find the off-ramp from Trumpism without having to become Democrats. Ken breaks down the power of the No Kings protests happening nationwide this weekend, the possibility of a general strike, and what real patriotism looks like when billionaires, racists and would‑be kings are calling the shots. And, if the “No Kings” protests need a new name.  They also go deep and keep it real on parenting through dark times, the mental health toll of nonstop crises, the healing power of community at shows and in the streets—and if Ken will ever run for office. Or serve as US Ambassador to a place he loves deeply. You gotta watch/hear this.
