From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the FDNY deploys beach Gator units at area beaches, which are staffed by EMTs trained to respond to emergencies on the beach. These units work in partnership with the FDNY Drone Unit, FDNY Fire Companies, the NYPD and New York City Parks Department lifeguards and can more easily navigate the beach and through crowds in their small, specialized vehicle. New York City's beaches are especially crowded during the warm summer months, and Independence Day weekend 2024 was no exception. Just after 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, Station 47's beach gator unit sprang into action when five swimmers in a closed section of the beach were caught in large swells and a rip current, slamming them into the Beach 91 jetty as they struggled to say afloat. In this episode, EMT Saverio Bosco and EMT Andrew Ochtera join us to discuss this rescue operation and what a “day at the beach” is like for members working at one the busiest beaches in the city. Captain Randy Li hosts.

Since 2022, New York has experienced more than 800 fires sparked by lithium-ion batteries, leading to 30 deaths and more than 400 injuries. The sudden explosion of battery incidents led FDNY in 2023 to form the Lithium-Ion Task Force, a specialized unit dedicated to addressing the growing threat of fires caused by batteries, particularly those used in e-bikes and e-scooters. Today on the podcast, we talk to John Orlando, the FDNY fire marshal who led the Lithium-Ion Task Force until recently. We chat about the causes and scope of New York City's battery problems, the work of the task force, and how other departments and jurisdictions can work together to achieve similar results, even without FDNY's considerable resources. Over the past several years, lithium-ion batteries have become increasingly common. Most people are now familiar with the fire risks associated with the batteries used in e-bikes and scooters, devices that have tragically contributed to 34 fire related deaths in New York City since 2021, as of the date of publication. But, the presence of lithium-ion batteries goes far beyond micromobility. They're found in everything from electric vehicles to large grid-scale energy storage systems, some of which are being installed in urban environments within the five boroughs. In this episode, Battalion Chief Jason Cascone hosts a comprehensive discussion with FDNY Chief of Safety James Canty, and Hazmat Battalion Chiefs Ray Coyle and Matt Quinn about why lithium-ion batteries can be volatile, how to safely operate at fires involving them, and mitigating them on the fireground.

In this inaugural episode of the Chief's Cadence, Chief Shane Wheeler sits down with FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito to explore effective leadership approaches in fire and EMS services. Drawing on over three decades of experience in one of the nation's largest departments, Chief Esposito shares how leadership demands more than just command. It requires adapting styles to fit individuals and situations. From the decisive authority needed on an emergency scene to the empathy and authenticity crucial for team trust, they break down autocratic, transformational, servant and authentic leadership. They also discuss navigating generational differences, the value of honest feedback through personality assessments, and how new leaders can earn credibility without rushing change.
40 years of combination experience with 27 of those being served with the FDNY. Retired Capt of Ladder 123. Mike started as a volunteer with Hailsite Fire Department in NY. Going career wasn't on his mind as Mike was making very good money as a heavy machinery rigger. It wasn't until a friend told him about career civil service that Mike then transitioned to being a Police Officer for a stint then moved on to Firefighting which the rest of his career speaks for itself. I throughly enjoyed listening to Mike speak about his career and different viewpoints within the service. But the most important topic he spoke on is making sure we as Firefighters have our own “Household” in order before worrying about everything else with our careers.
Be sure and join us with our special guest FDNY 39 year veteran, Battalion Chief Danny Sheridan He joined the FDNY in 1986, worked in some great companies, and with his extensive career with the department, I don't know, maybe has one or two great stories to share. 30 years of combination experience, 3rd generation Firefighter. A Lieutenant with the FDNY on a truck company in East Harlem & creator of Top Floor Tactics podcast. Mickey's indoctrination into the fire service was during a time America as a whole were more united than ever. When you hear Mickey speak there's no denying the love he has for the profession. Fireman can sense BS a mile away. When one finds their true calling, they discover a sense of purpose and direction in life, often associated with a deep passion or talent they feel drawn to. It's a vocation that provides meaning and fulfills their inner sense of identity. This realization can be a profound and transformative experience. And Mickey Farrell exemplifies just that. Jerry starts with the sounds of the Knicks beating the Celtics. Knicks fans shut down seventh avenue and even the FDNY got involved turning on the sirens. After the game, Jalen Brunson said there's nothing to celebrate yet. Gio and Jerry know the series is over but Boomer isn't saying that just yet. Gio thinks John Franco is training Matt Harvey to go to every single sporting event in NY.

We are joined this week by former FDNY firefighter/paramedic Vincent Johnson. Vinnie comes to us from Disaster Medical Solutions and a former FEMA USAR team in New York. He and Dr. Joe Holley share information about USAR medical specialist operations training for USAR docs and paramedics.
On May 1, 2024, FDNY members in Brooklyn responded to a fire that would challenge even the department's most experienced fire ground commanders. What would initially appear to be a minor roof fire involving an awning in front of a supermarket, quickly escalated into a serious multiple-alarm fire, ultimately involving five structures and requiring the equivalent of an eight-alarm assignment to bring under control. Deputy Assistant Chief Joseph Duggan and FDNY Chief of Special Operations Malcolm Moore join host Battalion Chief Jason Cascone for a conversation.
On this week's episode of Excelsior Journeys: The Road to Creativity, host & producer George Sirois sits down with fellow author Andrew Serra. While the two share a passion for storytelling, Andrew's journey to get into writing is a far different, much more eventful path. Andrew has been a lover of storytelling for most of his life, but he has also lived most of that life in one of the greatest collection of heroes in this country: the New York Fire Department. After being on the NYFD for over twenty-five years, eventually retiring as the Captain of Ladder 20 in SoHo, Andrew fed his love of writing in the Historical Fiction genre and also wrote the 9/11 memoir Finding John. To find out more about Andrew, including his historical fiction debut "Hell's Hundred Acres," click HERE.Excelsior Journeys: The Road to Creativity exists primarily as a platform for creatives of all kinds (authors, filmmakers, stand-up comics, musicians, voice artists, painters, podcasters, etc) to share their journeys to personal success. It is very important to celebrate those voices as much as possible to not only provide encouragement to up-and-coming talent, but to say thank you to the established men & women for inspiring the current generation of artists. If you agree that the Excelsior Journeys podcast serves a positive purpose and would like to show your appreciation, you can give back to the show by clicking HERE.
2nd generation Firefighter with 14 1/2 years of service with the FDNY who retired out of Rescue 3 and life member with Haverstraw Volunteer Fire Department in Rockland County NY. Jeff was one of 6 members that were forced to make a difficult decision on January 23, 2005 on what is known as the Black Sunday Fire. 2 of those members were killed instantly one passed away 6 years later and the 3 who survived would forever have their lives changed. Later on that day another Firefighter Richard Sclafani was also killed at a separate dwelling fire. The thing about surviving tragedy while a traumatic event can significantly impact a person, it doesn't fully encompass their identity or future potential. Acknowledging the impact of a tragedy is important, but it's also crucial to focus on the present and future, and to not let the past define the person's identity. Reaching out to trusted friends, family members, or professional help can be very beneficial during and after a tragedy. I would like for the listeners to hear Jeff's story and the strong message he has behind it. In this profession don't ever think “It can't happen here.”

Your "Little t" Traumas Matter, Too"Have you ever felt an inexplicable wave of self-doubt, a hesitation in speaking up, or an unshakable fear of rejection—without fully understanding why?" These subtle yet powerful feelings may be rooted in "little t" traumas—those everyday wounds that seem small on the surface but quietly shape how we see ourselves and interact with the world. Nearly every woman has experienced these moments, often dismissing them as insignificant, yet they accumulate over time, influencing confidence, relationships, and emotional well-being.In this episode, we uncover the hidden weight of "little t" trauma, how to recognize its impact, and, most importantly, how to begin the journey of healing with hero and therapist Jen Baumgold. Jen is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist who specializes in trauma treatment. She is certified in EMDR and works with clients to help untangle the knots of trauma while finding a path toward healing and resilience. After graduating with her master's in social work, Jen began her career at the New York Fire Department counseling service unit, where she worked until 2016. During her time there, she provided crucial mental health support to FDYN members and their families. In addition to her private practice, Jen is an active member of the Fair Field Trauma Response team, a volunteer alliance of mental health professionals committed to aiding first responders and the local communities in healing from trauma, tragedy, and stress. From a young age Joel knew he was destined to become a Firefighter following 3 of his 4 brothers who were volunteers. Joel started out with Alexandria FD moving up the rank of Lieutenant before deciding to switch departments after 9 years. The move wasn't easy but well worth it after listening to Joel's experiences and the individuals who he had the pleasure of working along side with. My favorite quote from Joel is “Company Officers have to be proficient in everything he expects his members to do.”
In this episode of the FDNY Pro Podcast, we welcome Captain Bevonia Harrison of Station 38 in Brooklyn. With a nearly 20-year career with FDNY EMS and time in the U.S. Navy Reserve, Captain Harrison discusses her lifelong commitment to service and her passion for giving back in some of the busiest neighborhoods in the city. She explains how important it is to her to make an impact in a community that's not far from her childhood home, especially during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
45 years of combination experience. Retired Deputy Assistant Chief of the FDNY who has held many ranks within the organization including Chief of Fire Academy, Training & Safety. Currently Managing Director of the First Responder Center For Excellence which focuses on addressing crucial issues like firefighter cancer, mental health, and suicide. Frank started out as a volunteer Firefighter following after his brother. The FDNY was never on the radar but the individuals within the East Farmingdale Volunteer fire department changed his mindset when they would discuss different calls and aspects they experienced while on the job. And with that Frank applied at a young age, got on with the greatest Fire Department in the world and the rest was history. Frank attributes his success to the friends and mentors he surrounded himself with. One of my favorite quotes from Frank is “ You can fool the spectators but not the players.”
