The school-to-prison pipeline is a complex and damaging system that disproportionately affects marginalized communities, particularly people of color. This pipeline refers to the policies and practices that push students out of school and into the criminal justice system, creating long-term impacts on individuals and communities. Quan Huynh, Executive Director of Southern California at Defy Ventures, exemplifies the power of second chances. While in prison, he discovered his entrepreneurial spirit and started Jade Janitors after his release from a 22-year prison sentence in 2015. Formerly incarcerated individuals face overwhelming challenges in education, employment, and housing, making fair chance hiring practices essential for their reintegration into society. By giving second chances, companies can help break the cycle of recidivism and create paths to stability and success. Following the election of President Donald Trump in November, California Gov. Gavin Newson, a Democrat, convened a special session of the state legislatures to “Trump-proof” California. At the top of the agenda is Newson's effort to prevent a Trump administration from deporting illegal aliens living in the state. “This is going against the rule of law and against the will of the American people” who elected Trump, Allison Huynh said of Newson's efforts. Democrats in California have “romanticized” sanctuary cities and even crime, according to Huynh, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and former Democrat. “We're just opening the gate and allowing all these illegal immigrants to come in, a lot of criminals, drug dealers, and it's all funded by George Soros and the cartels,” she said. A narrative has been perpetuated in California that justifies crime in the name of being kind to the poor, according to Huynh, but the reality is that “were basically frogs being boiled alive.” Huynh grew up in a Marxist Communist country until the age of seven when her family left Vietnam and moved to America, and says she is watching as her state embraces “full blown socialism.” Huynh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how Newson's actions are moving her state towards socialism, and if there is any hope left for California. Allison Huynh was a fundraiser for then-Sen. Barack Obama before he was elected president in 2008, but she now supports former President Donald Trump. Huynh (pronounced like “win”) and her husband were attracted to Obama's message of “hope and change” in 2007. “It was the hope and the image that he projected” that led Huynh to not only support Obama herself in the 2008 election, but encourage others to do likewise. As an entrepreneur and successful computer scientist in Silicon Valley in California, Huynh hosted fundraising dinners for Obama with tickets costing $50,000 a plate. But after Obama won the election and took office in 2009, Huynh says, disillusionment began to set in. A Vietnamese immigrant, Huynh says the disillusionment “started with Barack Obama and this lack of logic in terms of how he led,” but it didn't end there. Huynh calls diversity, equity, and inclusion “Marxist and doublespeak” because “equity is what you get when you work for something.” Equity is not won because of the “color of your skin” or “identity politics,” Huynh contends. “This doesn't make sense. It erodes away from what it is to be an American, right?” Asked why she is now supporting Trump, Huynh says that after meeting Trump, she found him “very open” to considering policies that serve tech entrepreneurs like her. Huynh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to share her story of disillusionment with the Democratic Party. Hosted on Acast.
