On this bittersweet episode, the All the Stuff gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, say Farewell, and share their takeaways from hosting this podcast. Lisa Carpenter begins by sharing her story regarding debt, and how, over the run of this podcast, she has been able to come to terms with it, do the work to get herself out of debt, and most importantly, into a new mindset. Jen also shares her big changes, including a rebrand of her podcast Financial Fluency, and her desire to talk about a lot more topics than just finances. She plans on focussing a lot more on her writing as well. On her side, Lisa Sharp summarizes that the issues we have in life are because we think we are the only ones. Being isolated and thinking it is just you, is so painful and so not necessary. Sharing our feelings with honest conversation is one of the biggest gifts we can give each other. Taking inspired action is great, and when it is time to let go, it is time… Thank you to all the listeners who took part in the journey that is “All The Stufff”. Are the cold, dreary days of winter giving you the blues? Today, the All the Stuff gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, share their thoughts on seasonal mood swings and how to manage them. When Lisa Sharp discovered she was suffering from S.A.D. she immediately started research to find out what could help the feelings of sadness and depression that come along with this ailment. Fish oil and a sun lamp proved extremely beneficial to her and helps her combat the effects of the gloomy weather. Lisa Carpenter lives in Vancouver where it is quite grey and gloomy from the months of November to February. She also suffers from S.A.D., and has a huge sun lamp to regenerate, along with vitamin supplements including vitamin D and omega 3s. She also recognizes that this time of year is a time where she has to up her self care and be as kind and compassionate towards herself as possible. Omega 3s, or fish oil, is extremely important in supporting your emotional health and moods both during periods of S.A.D., and PMS. Flax oil is also very beneficial and can be added to foods such a soups and salads. Lisa Sharp suggest a subscribe and save through Amazon so you never run out and use your timer or alarm on your phone to remind you to take it. Decluttering your environment is also a great way to clear out heaviness. While it is normal to have days when you feel down, if you spend days at a time feeling blue and are not motivated to do things you once enjoyed, you may want to see your doctor. Antidepressants may help you balance out your moods and allow you to enjoy life once again. Today, the All the Stuff gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, share their thoughts on mental health, and the ongoing stigma that keeps many from sharing their stories. In the entrepreneurial world, there is a common stigma that in order to be successful you have to act like you have everything together. Fact is, everyone struggles at certain times, some more than others, without exception. Rather than being vulnerable and authentic, many entrepreneurs only show the successful side of themselves and their businesses, and deal with their issues in silence. This keep them in a terrible loop of feeling ashamed, overwhelmed, and alone. In fact, statistics show that among entrepreneurs, a staggering 30% suffer from depression. Fact is, being open and honest about mental health issues with those that you trust, opens doors for fantastic conversations that remind us that we are never alone and it is not only OK, but cleansing to talk about it. And hearing (or speaking) the words “me too” can create strong connections that brings people closer together. With tax season looming ahead, the All the Stuff gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, share their thoughts on handling all the paperwork that comes along with owning a business. Paperwork can overflow, and cause great stress to people. In fact, Lisa Sharp shares how most people keep way more than they need to. For example, unless you are writing off electricity as a business expense, there is no need to keep years and years of utility bills. In fact many receipts can be destroyed after only a year, without any worries. There are exceptions, but now with online billing, history is available on the internet for a lot of things. Taking care of paperwork is really about self-care. It is time consuming, but not doing it can lead to lost documents and costly replacement fees, and intermingling of paperwork from different years, which leads to a huge mess that becomes overwhelming and causes people to not take action. Lisa Sharp’s Blueprint Program starts off with setting up a paperwork system that by the mere fact of having it, reduces stress and enhances your quality of life! Today, the All the Stuff gals Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, share their thoughts on handling disappointment when things don’t go quite as planned. Sometimes, even when you are doing everything you need to do, the end result is not forthcoming. Lisa Carpenter, who was fresh out of a launch for her program E.A.T. at the time of recording, offered this question: “Are you willing to keep moving through the discomfort of not knowing when you are going to get there, but having unwavering faith that it is coming?” In weight loss, as in business, and pretty much anything endeavor we undertake, time, tenacity and consistency is what gets us closer to our goals. Jen Turrell, an avid writer, shared a snippet from the book Big Magic, where a famous author was giving a talk, and at the end, a man stood up. This mad said he has been writing as long as he had, and despite trying and trying again, he had never had anything published. The author offered empathy, and then suggested that he walk away from writing. Go and live your life, he said, and then if you begin to miss it, and rediscover the passion that led you to start writing in the first place, go back to it. For Jen, it is the act of writing that gives her the greatest pleasure. She shared how she has dreams and goals of getting published and has three books in the works. Even if that never happens, she will still write every day. The passion has to be there before the expectation of an outcome does. Lisa Sharp offered this cautionary thought. In your face down moments, it is important to share with people who hold a safe space for you and will support you when things get tough and you are at your most vulnerable. It is much easier to fold and give up in those times. Seek out your support network - your cheerleaders and remember why you were doing it in the first place! Closing thought… The journey is the destination… It is important to make peace with the process and the stories we are telling ourselves about the process. And sometimes, we need to walk away from it in order to appreciate just how much the actual process, or journey makes us feel. Today, our ladies Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, share their thoughts on managing stress and anxiety when big changes come around. Currently, the US election and resulting change in power has created much change, and for Lisa Sharp, the dismantling of things that she holds dear. One of the things she undertook as self care was to unlike and unfollow anything in her Facebook feed that made her feel anxiety and stress. Instead of allowing the bombardment of news and social media, she now choose which ones to engage with, and limits the amount of article she reads. She emphasizes that self-care is even more important in times of change. Lisa Carpenter spoke of a difficult time in her life five years ago, when her husband went into rehab, and she thought her life was over. In order to be able to cope with this huge change, she learned to focus on what she did have control over - her health, her mindset, and her non-negotiables. She also learned that this change, however difficult, was necessary in order for things to get better. Her advice is for others to show up as best as they can for themselves, so they can then support others who need help. For Jen, the change in the country is bringing out correlations to her childhood, which was fraught with domestic violence and abuse. She feels that there are some hard-won rights that women have gotten used to, that are now in jeopardy, and that we have to fight back and stand strong for our rights. She is taking action, and although that makes her feel better, she recognizes that she does have to have boundaries and protect her sanity. Closing thought… When it comes to managing stress & anxiety with change, recognize where your feelings are coming from, what parts you need to address, and taking the opportunity to find out what you really need to heal within yourself. Be sure to share your thoughts with the The “All the Stuff” gals in their Facebook Group, a safe place to share and connect! Today, our ladies Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, share their thoughts on letting go of old habits and the discomfort of creating new ones. Lisa Carpenter, at the time of recording, was in the final stages of planning her Masterclass. During past launches, she had used anxiety as the fuel to get her through the planning, which was always at the last minute and on the fly. Needless to say this was extremely stressful, and she felt as though she had been swallowed whole by the end of it. She has had to change her approach, and now plans ahead and comes from a place of ease. The temptation to stray from the task at hand to check out Facebook, respond to a text, or whatever other “itch” is calling her, is a very real challenge. Putting her phone in another room, and clearing her calendar has allowed her to give herself the space she needs to do what she needs to do, in a timely fashion. Lisa Sharp, a notorious self-proclaimed procrastinator, shares that her last minute mentality is in fact a protection mechanism that she uses to not hold herself accountable for the success of her endeavors, because she puts things together at the last minute. Even though it is uncomfortable, it is the known variable, and her default. She shares that focussing on one thing at a time, and staying the course, allows you to accomplish so much more. She suggests using timers to keep on track and recommends them all the time to her clients. In the throes of writing her first novel, Jen Turrell is also very familiar with the issue of time wasting, and distraction from the task at hand. Writing is a long term endeavor that doesn’t have an immediate return on time invested, so being conscious of time management is very important. For her, social media can be a total waste of time. On the other hand, she also finds it to be very useful both to spread her message, learn about the goings on in the country and around the world that interest her. She has the 90 day year planner, and it really has helped her stay on track. She uses 15 minute increments to stay on task with a timer as well and has found she is much more productive that way. Having a daily theme is also helpful - i.e. Monday is planning day, Tuesday is Podcast/Promo day, Wednesday is Writing day etc. Closing thought… “Stay in the room, both literally and figuratively until you have done what you said you were going to do.” The “All the Stuff” gals invite listeners to join in the conversation in their Facebook Group, to share about their own struggles and wins dealing with bad habits. Today the “All the Stuff” gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, discuss Diet Fads, and how they don’t work. Over the years, the diet industry has rolled out all sorts of fads for weight loss, like low carb, low fat, gluten free, lactose free to name a few. These seemingly quick-fix solutions end up being unsustainable, and often extremely unhealthy. After all, as Lisa Carpenter mentions, both cocaine and broken glass are gluten free, but would you eat them? Listeners will hear how learning the basics, and making choices that support how you want to feel is the key to healthy weight loss and a healthy body. In fact, we can get so used to feeling poorly, that when we do start feeding our bodies properly, the change is remarkable. In a world where food packaging is riddled with marketing schemes, it is very important to read labels and understand what you are eating. Eating whole foods is truly the best way to care for your body, and helps combat digestive issues that are so often aggravated by refined processed foods. Want a safe place to share? Today the “All the Stuff” gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, share about Willpower vs Systems, and how one can fail you and the other can save you. When it comes to nutrition, in particular losing weight, using willpower without a system is a sure way to fail. Systems like food logging, food prep and support groups are much more effective in keeping us conscious and doing the things we need to do to achieve our goals. Willpower comes into play when you need momentary strength to resist things like cravings, but it cannot be the only tool you use as it is very volatile, and greatly drops off when exhaustion and boredom set in. Systems help take the decision making out of the process. Having too many choices, while exciting, makes things more difficult to manage, and leads to temptation. Planning meals, purchases and finances in advance takes the element of choice out of it, and helps to keep us on track. Listeners will learn how doing the things you don’t want to do and doing them first, helps remove the stress, and even though they can be uncomfortable, they usually don’t take much time, and have huge benefits. Are you doing what you say you are going to do? Systems can help! Be sure to come on over the the “All the Stuff” Facebook Group and share what you do in terms of systems and willpower in your own life. Lisa Sharp’s program The Blueprint Program is always open. Today the “All the Stuff” gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, share about the importance and celebrating yourself. When we take initiative to follow our intentions, and honour our “whys”, we need to stop and celebrate! Sharing our wins, even when thing are not perfect, is necessary to remind ourselves of the progress that we do make, and give ourselves permission to say “I did awesome!”. People routinely avoid sharing their wins in fear of appearing egotistical or bragging. As such, they have created these negative stories around allowing themselves to celebrate, and judge those that do so for themselves. This behaviour whittles away at our self-worth, and keeps us in a small place full of self-deprecating behaviour. Listeners will learn how in fact we all do need self-approval and support, and it is a skill that needs to be cultivated. When we celebrate ourselves which is a form of self-love, we soften our attitude towards ourselves and others as well. It isn’t easy to do, and requires keeping these thoughts top of mind. It also requires being able to receive, which is especially hard for women. Lisa Carpenter offers this tip: Write a list of 20 things to celebrate about yourself. If can be about anything that made you happy. Carry this list with you to refer back to when you are having a rough day. Another great tip is at the end of the day, write down three things that happened to you every day. Or better yet, plan to do three things every day that you can celebrate. It will change your life! Our gals share three of their own personal wins which you won’t want to miss! Come on over and celebrate your wins with our experts in the “All the Stuff” Facebook Group HERE. After the flurry of activities and overindulgences of the holidays, we usually greet the new year with an abundance of motivation to make the new year the best ever. However, so often, a few weeks into the new year, we lose that motivation, and give into old habits and behaviours that don’t lead us towards our “whys”. This leads us to believe that we have to “start over”... Today the “All the Stuff” gals Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, discuss this common behaviour. Lisa Carpenter offers the perspective that no one really starts over - you start from the place where you left off. And losing the judgement is something that is imperative as it does not serve anyone to dwell on something that has passed. Nor does it serve to bash yourself around in shame for overspending, overeating, or over-cluttering… Instead, focus on your “whys”, and move towards them and how you want to feel. So if things get out of control, and you start feeling less than stellar, you have to be willing to go through the “detox” symptoms, to get through it and feel better. Lisa Sharp discusses how having a plan to deal with the eventual discomfort will really help get through the transition towards your self-care. Listeners will also hear how having people around you with common goals helps keep you on track. Jen Turrell shared how the circle she shares with Lisa Sharp and Lisa Carpenter help her keep her goals of simplicity front and center, and in so doing, found her holidays were quite peaceful and relaxed. Today, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, discuss how past stories surrounding numbers have affected each of them in their belief systems, and what the repercussions have been in their lives. Like most of us have had or still have in one particular area or another, Lisa C. has had “stories” since childhood regarding her lack of understanding of numbers. She shares how a recent retreat and workshop on numbers using spreadsheets brought her a great deal of discomfort, and how staying with it helped her discover the unexpected truths that lay beyond her fears, in particular, regarding her business finances, and came out of it with a new confidence and awareness of where she is and wants to be. Both Jen and Lisa S. also share their thoughts and ideas, in this “something for everyone” episode. When one is fearful of something, be it numbers or otherwise, it usually means that there is a lack of confidence and knowledge combined with limiting beliefs which can inevitably lead to avoidance. The “All the Stuff” gals invite listeners to join in the conversation in their Facebook Group, to share about what makes them uncomfortable, and offer support to work through what they are avoiding. Today the “All the Stuff” gals Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, discuss the post Christmas excesses and how to handle them without guilt. Lisa Carpenter: Excess food can trigger overeating and cravings. Remove excesses as quickly as possible by sending it home with your guests, freeze leftovers, donating, or throwing it away. Avoiding making too much food, only what you need. Jen Turrell: Use gift cards on sales after the holidays for things you really want and use or cash them in. If you receive a new electronic that is replacing another older one, there are places that will accept old items for recycling. There are shelters that will accept wiped phones for women that are victims of domestic violence. Be vigilant with charges on credit and pay them off as quickly as possible. Lisa Sharp: Don’t hang on to gifts that you don’t need, use or like out of guilt. It’s ok to let them go. It is the sentiment that matters, not the item itself. You can return it, exchange it, re-gift it, or give to charity. Remember, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Listeners are encouraged to join in the conversation in the “All the Stuff” Facebook Group, to share their own post holiday clean up and purge. Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach: When it comes to holiday eating, do a weekly overview and plan ahead, considering parties and special events. On days you know you are going to indulge, be sure you are making good choices as well such as eating a healthy breakfast, getting in your healthy proteins, fats and veggies and drinking enough water. Pick your treats wisely - enjoy what you love, not EVERYTHING, and watch your portion sizes. Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert: Watch your alcohol consumption which not only has empty calories, but lowers your inhibitions and your ability to make good choices. Christmas will be back again next year! When you start holiday shopping and bring the items into the house, break down the boxes/packaging immediately, and have one place for all of the receipts. Stay in the holidays spirit, but avoid going crazy with the spending. Remember to focus on quality over quantity! Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women: Make a gift budget, and stick to it. Create a wish list for yourself and your children and encourage other family members to do the same, to simplify gift giving and ensure gifts are things people want and need. Plan ahead for party expenses such as hostess gifts (chocolates, wine, flowers etc), and plan potlucks. Remember what the holidays are all about! Avoid numbing out with food, debt and clutter. Instead, slow down, take care of yourself and enjoy spending time with family and friends. Fact is, aging is a natural part of life. However, there are things we can do to make these changes less impactful and enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle well into our elder years. Join the “All the Stuff” gals Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, as they discuss their personal experiences with aging and how they incorporate self-care to ensure that they too will enjoy healthy and vital golden years. In this episode of “All the Stuff”, our resident experts Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, explore the concept of “Self-Care”, what it really is (and isn’t!), and how it is absolutely non-negotiable for you. So many of us fall into the habit and unconscious behaviour of ignoring our bodies and just existing, only to wake up one day depleted, and feeling defeated. Listeners will hear how self-care is NOT selfish - and that paying attention to what they need to do to feel good, whatever that is, will only help support them in their daily lives and relationships with others. When it comes to investing in our homes, businesses, families and selves, most people either fall into either the “Just in Time” or “Just in Case” categories. Last minute, “Just in Time” investments of any kind (time, money, etc), can be very efficient, and create a streamlined system that is free of clutter and over-expenditures. But they can also bring stress and anxiety when there is a bump in the road that so often happens… As simple as not having enough toilet paper, or a key player on your team getting sick just before a big launch… On the flip side, “Just in Case” proponents are seemingly always prepared, which can lead to less stress, until the excesses become stresses of their own. Wastefullness, excess clutter and debt can all come out of over-zealous “Just in case” behaviours. Join our “All the Stuff” gals Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, along with Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach as they discuss and their own self-admitted tendencies and how they achieve a balance between the two. For many folks, “doing it all” defines their self-worth - they have each day filled to the brim with things to do for everyone and everything - kids, school, spouse, parents and family, work, community, you name it. And for these people, who are always running ragged and exhausted, there is no time for self-care and self-love. Instead, they “push through” the exhaustion, and become victims of their behaviour. The things that really light them up get put by the wayside and their health suffers. Join our “All the Stuff” gals Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women as they discuss how getting conscious of our “Stuff” is the first step in achieving freedom from the ball and chain we often create for ourselves trying to do it all. This episode has some great tips and tricks on how to say no to time spent on extraneous things and leave some space for the things that nurture us. Words are very powerful. The words that we tell ourselves every day become our truths, and dramatically and powerfully play a huge role in our lives. For many people, these words and stories are abusive - diminishing all that they are, and all that they could be. Is there something that you “treat” yourself to on a regular basis? Something that could quantifiably accumulate into a lot of money spent over the long term? Most of us do. But what are the driving forces behind buying the “latte”, or the lunch out, or any of the impulse purchases we so often make? Perhaps the day has not gone as well as you had hoped, and you are wanting to soothe bruised emotions, so the dopamine rush from buying the “thing” gives you the temporary lift that you are seeking. Or maybe you need some self-love and that gorgeous pair of Manolo Blahnik stilettos is calling your name. Join our “All the Stuff” gals Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, along with Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach as they discuss the what, where, why and how of the “latte effect” and junk spending. Learn what questions to ask yourself about your purchases and spending patterns so that you can become more conscious and avoid the potential undesirable consequences of the behaviour in the long term, and often in the short term as well. At one point or another in our lives, sometimes chronically, we try and control situations and others. This inherent human behavior, especially for women, is one of the most silently destructive as its effects creep up on us slowly over time, until the day when our physical and emotional selves can no longer take it… Fact is, trying to control when so many external factors are at play is a losing game for the controller. The more you seek control, the more you are out of control. It’s like hitting the breaks on ice… When we try to control, we completely let go of ourselves, our feelings and our self-care. The cumulative lack of sleep, good nutrition, exercise, and personal time and the resulting stress that this causes our emotional state and body, lead us to health issues, weight gain, clutter, financial chaos and literally losing touch with ourselves. Many of us are caretakers by nature, and in so doing, feel like we have to take on everything, and everyone. Why do we do it and how do we help ourselves? Join the “All the Stuff” ladies Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, in this impactful discussion that everyone can relate to in one way or another, and find out how to deal with controlling habits, both in situations and towards others, and learn to step away, gain perspective, take back your life and show up for yourself, while letting others walk their own path and live their own journey of life and learning. Today the “All the Stuff” trio, led by Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, have a thought provoking discussion on fear, and how our fears are deeply grounded in our emotions. More specifically, how fear can either paralyse us in self-doubt and unworthiness or empower us to grow when we face it head on. Listeners will discover how a community can offer a safe venue for becoming more conscious, and for sharing the feelings of shame that come up in all aspects of life - be they related to their financials, family, clutter, or body image. They will hear how such a community can help dissipate their shame as they see others going through similar emotions and situations, and find empathy towards others and ultimately, towards themselves in the process. Brené Brown, Research Professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work is a highly respected authority on shame, worthiness, courage and vulnerability, and can be found here: http://brenebrown.com/. Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, leads the discussion today on Perfectionism and along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer, and more specifically, how most people don’t even identify they are perfectionists or have perfectionist tendencies, and are unaware of just how much it plays a role in their lives. Listeners will hear how a seemingly positive trait can literally stop people in their tracks, and keep them from even starting something, for fear of not getting it just right… Our trio talk about their own experiences with perfectionism and how getting conscious of the voices inside themselves is the catalyst to acknowledging that perfectionism is in the room. With that awareness comes the ability to see how it is affecting their lives, and what they need to do to change their self-talk, and allow themselves to move forward.
