This week on The Social Circus, I'm joined by the incredible Denise Duffield-Thomas – bestselling author of Lucky Bitch, Get Rich, Lucky Bitch, and Chill and Prosper. Denise is a leading voice in money mindset and has supported over 10,000 students through her signature Money Bootcamp. She's a Hay House author, mum of three, and proudly calls herself a lazy introvert – which totally aligns with her “chill and prosper” approach to business. In our chat, we dive into the beliefs and blocks that hold women back from charging what they're really worth. Denise shares her own story, practical mindset shifts, and why running a successful business doesn't have to mean hustling harder. This episode is your permission slip to receive more, stress less, and start building your abundant life – on your terms. Key Takeaways: Your pricing reflects your mindset, not just your market. You don't need to hustle to be wealthy – chill can work too! Money blocks are sneaky – awareness is the first step. Repetition and simplicity can scale your success faster. Abundance starts with permission – from yourself.

Send us a textIn this episode of Embrace Midlife, I'm thrilled to bring you part two of my insightful conversation with the wonderful Denise Duffield Thomas. This episode is truly special as we delve into Denise's fascinating money archetypes theory, which can be a game-changer in understanding our financial habits and mindset. I've always aimed to support midlife women through the ups and downs that come with this stage of life, and Denise's insights are incredibly powerful in this mission. We kick off with an honest admission about a little mishap: I didn't record our initial interview, but thanks to Denise's backup, we're able to share this valuable conversation with you. Denise explains the different money archetypes, such as the Accumulator, Alchemist, Celebrity, Connector, Maverick, Nurturer, Romantic, and Ruler. She breaks down their strengths and weaknesses, illustrating how knowing your archetype can help you make better financial decisions and live a more fulfilling life.During our chat, Denise uses real-life examples to show how these archetypes play out. We talk about everything from handling money more sensibly (even if it might mean facing analysis paralysis) to embracing one's creativity and the challenges each archetype might face. Whether you're someone who saves every penny or you find yourself constantly getting stuck in the ideation phase, Denise offers practical advice on channeling these tendencies into strengths rather than setbacks.Denise also discusses her personal journey and how she integrates her top archetypes into her daily life. We explore essential topics like setting personal boundaries, finding balance, and understanding our intrinsic motivations versus societal expectations. I find Denise's perspective particularly enlightening, especially how she uses her archetypes to manage her business and personal life effectively.Towards the end of this episode, we talk about the importance of accepting and loving all parts of ourselves. Denise shares a moving story about accessing her nurturing side during a video shoot, which brought her to tears. It's a beautiful reminder of how powerful it can be to embrace every facet of our identity.

Denise Duffield-Thomas, money mindset mentor and bestselling author of "Get Rich, Lucky Bitch," joins us for a transformative conversation about removing the invisible blocks keeping you from financial abundance.Money conversations remain taboo for many—especially women—yet addressing our complex relationship with wealth is essential for creating the life we desire. Denise shares how our unconscious language patterns and beliefs about money (like casually telling her daughter "money is dirty") create subtle but powerful barriers to our success. With compassion and humor, she guides us to recognize these patterns through curiosity rather than self-blame.For those tired of toxic hustle culture but skeptical about passive manifestation, Denise offers the refreshing middle path of "chussel"—chilled hustle—finding your path of least resistance while still taking meaningful action. She debunks the myth of setting a "critic-proof price" that everyone will find reasonable, encouraging us instead to establish energetically aligned pricing that creates a fair exchange. What sets this conversation apart are the practical, actionable techniques anyone can implement. From creating "sensory anchors" throughout your environment (like scented candles, meaningful jewelry, and strategic screen savers) to personalizing manifestation based on your dominant senses, Denise provides a toolkit for embedding your goals into everyday life without requiring perfect consistency. Her approach acknowledges we're all human—sometimes cleaning bathroom sinks when we should be working—while offering compassionate strategies to maintain focus on what truly matters.Whether you're an entrepreneur setting prices, a corporate employee seeking a raise, or simply someone wanting a healthier relationship with money, this episode delivers profound insights with immediately applicable techniques. As Denise reminds us, we're working for both our eight-year-old and eighty-year-old selves—and neither would want fear to hold us back from creating the abundant life we deserve.Connect with Denise:https://www.denisedt.comhttps://www.instagram.com/deniseDT/

EEK!Nartarsha Bamblett on Intuition and IdentityOne of the exercises was to practice gratitude for the good and the bad, and I shared with the conference room that I am grateful that I created conference, and I am grateful for the financial loss of the first one, AND the fact that I kept running it from there.Emma Veiga-Malta on Unleashing your Inner CreativeI realised that I had been treating creativity as a reward for good business behaviour, rather than embracing it as part of the process. Interestingly, I used to do that with self-care and rest - treat it as a reward, rather than a necessity.Denise Duffield-Thomas on Money Mindset The big insight was seeing how my sense of responsibility for others can create a feeling that more financial success will just create more responsibilities - possibly a reason why I have had an income plateau for the last few years. Interesting!Leonie Dawson's Channelled Message - You are GoldenOne of the things I keep remembering from Leonie's presentation was that birds don't sing their morning song, and then check to see how many likes they got. They sing for the joy of it. They sing because that's what they are made to do. That's part of their identity.Lisa Twohig on Audience ConnectionThe big take-away insight for me came from Lisa's workbook question - What's the easiest way for me to spend more quality time with my audience?I'll be playing with some new strategies, and reminding myself that quality time is a priority - because I absolutely agree that it is!Rebecca Saunders on Going NarrowIt was powerful to hear once again that reminder that niching is super-important - it gives you the opportunity to go deep with your audience, and to get more specific with your messaging.Clare Wood on Cash Flow with ConfidenceThe more consistently you use a system, the more likely you are to stick with it - so I have shortened the intervals on a bunch of things to see how that works, and already it's made a big difference. And don't forget - GET YOUR 2025 TICKET!Let me know your thoughts via our Text FanMail!

Welcome back to Alchemy for Authors and Happy New Year! In this solo episode I share some of the manifestation practices I use to get clear on my writing goals, and set myself up for an inspired and successful writing year. Some of the topics I discuss include: ·       Why the Law of Attraction won't work without Action. ·       Why not getting what you want is sometimes better than getting what you want. ·       The questions you need to reflect on as one year ends and another begins. ·       Why your “Writing Why” has nothing to do with money. ·       Why your “shoulds” can signal misalignment and a tendency towards people-pleasing. ·       How incremental upgrades and sexy new underwear can propel you towards living your best life now. ·       The anchor and mantra I'm using to achieve my goals this year. ·       How decluttering can be a powerful first step in manifesting your desires. ·       Why the hardest and most important thing I'm going to do this year is scheduling downtime. ·       And why adopting the phrase “I get to…” is a powerful trick for getting dumb things done. This juicy episode of Alchemy for Authors is jam-packed with resources for making 2024 your best writing year yet. Do you ever find yourself moving your own goalpost? I've been thinking a lot about this concept for the past few months and trying to notice how often I self sabotage by doing it! It's a dangerous thing because it immediately has us thinking we are less successful than we really are. In this episode, I want to help you find some guardrails for yourself so you can protect your goals. I'm a big believer in taking the time to write them down. Not only will this help you remember them, but if you're remembering them, you're less likely to move your goalpost!  Each year, I reserve time on my way home from Balloon Boss Summit to intentionally think about and set my goals for the following year. I love this timing because I'm always so excited about the possibilities after Summit and I use that excitement to plan the next year of my business. I utilize a physical planner to write down my goals and break them into smaller chunks, but at minimum, I suggest a little goal hack I learned from Denise Duffield Thomas and I share it in this episode. Now the biggest reason I find myself moving my goalpost is due to shiny object syndrome. I'll see a new trend pop up on Instagram, for example, and I'll think that I need to divert my attention there instead of following the plan I had already laid out for myself. Then at that point, I'm not fully committed to either goal! To eliminate those shiny objects, I've decided to unfollow or mute some of the accounts that tempt me to change my plan. If you find yourself scrolling and suddenly feeling down about where you are with your business, I encourage you to do the same. My next tip is cliche, I know, but I'm trying to really dig deep into it this year; it's the phrase “define your why”. It's so easy to default to your children or family as your “why”, but I'm forcing myself to look at it in terms of what my “why” is as a creative business owner. To be the most creative? To grow a team? To be the one to make a lot of decisions? To work just enough to pay the bills? These are hugely different purposes so it's important to understand this about yourself as you set your goals for your business. Now, more practically, here are a few other things I'm doing in 2024 to keep myself from moving my own goalpost, and I share more details in the episode: Pre-planning my promotions by quarters Scheduling and focusing in on my biggest annual jobs Deciding which annual jobs I don't want to take again Scheduling vacations (personal and working vacations)! Creating a list of ideas for later I really hope this episode helps you find ways to stay true to your goals in 2024, and I'd love to hear what they are! And from the UGlu Hotline this week, we get a question about doing #allthethings and being everywhere when it comes to social media. In this episode, I am joined by the amazing Lien from The Big Exit, who will be talking all about your business exit plan. Lien and I met at The Rose Farm with Denise Duffield-Thomas last December, and we had some really amazing conversations about exiting businesses. As someone who has a personal brand and a few products that could potentially be sold off in my business, I had never thought about preparing my business for exit in advance. I always thought I would just cross that bridge when I came to it. But Lien and I had such fascinating conversations that I just HAD to invite her onto the podcast, because I think a lot of us just assume that we're going to be running our businesses forever and we're never going to want to leave it. However, even if that's the case, there are still some things that we can do to ensure we're building the foundations of our business and getting everything really solid. Lien also shares her free quiz to help you determine whether your business is ready to be sold, and provides you with some actionable steps to help you work on your business exit plan. This episode is such a juicy one. I go deep with my friend and original money mentor Denise Duffield ThomasGet ready for a wild ride as we discuss everything from money blocks, (Denise shares really openly and really authentically about her own money blocks) to perimenopause and pole dancing. So if you are up for a really juicy conversation, then this is the one for you.I would be utterly delighted and grateful beyond words if you would (if you're not already) subscribe, leave a review, and share. Please tag me, @suzy_ashworth, when you post on social media so I can share in the love.Highlights 09:23 What would I do if I really, really truly, truly could choose? And that was the question that came up for me about a year or so ago. And so we decided to sell our house to downsize things, all this kind of stuff. But I made that decision. I was like, so stoked. But then the House took six months to sell. And in that time, I really got clear11:42 Am I broken? I know that everybody has that thought and that fear when they they're like, this is the thing that I want, and it's not happening21:18 I'm curious, like, how much of your own book are you reading when you have these realisations? Like, oh, I've told the whole world, this is what they need to be doing. And and I'm looking at my own life and be like, oh, I need to do this too.Quotes"My new philosophy has to be 'all of my projects are profitable'”"Denise: during Covid my recurring money block came up, which is I am responsible for everyone.""I want people to be just as excited when they hear I'm putting an event on as people are when they hear that Glastonbury is releasing their first lot of tickets.""There's a level of empowerment like that sexiness actually isn't for anybody else. The first step to a successful podcast journey is understanding your listeners. From thinking that people don't want to hear from you, to making intros that make your listeners skip the episode, to creating hours-long content that gets heard by one because you've never looked at your analytics, there is so much that podcast hosts never considered and that will make or break the podcast experience. This episode will cover 10 secrets that you need to know about listeners in order to make podcast decisions that will help grow your business. Ready?Understanding when to follow-through, and when you can break promises you made to listenersYou can even break a promise to your listeners and still maintain their support, as long as you remain authentic and true to your core promise. It's not about the medium or specifics through which you deliver your promised, but the fact that you do deliver on the what.Listeners are human after all, and they're reasonable - being honest and truthful about your circumstances will sometimes further your relationship with them, as it shows a more vulnerable side of you!The Impact of Show Notes on DownloadsShow notes can be a tricky aspect of podcasting. While detailed show notes may provide a thorough understanding of the episode's content, I believe that they may also decrease the number of downloads, as listeners might opt to read rather than listen. By no means I'm saying that you should forgo accessibility by not offering transcripts or closed captioning), but you should understand that doing show notes that are too thorough will impact listener behavior.A single superfan can bring you a small crowd of listeners - for free!A single superfan can be a catalyst for your podcast's growth. Remember that as you're podcasting, your content is helping a single person and while they may at some point ‘graduate' from your content, they didn't forget about you. Podcast listeners WILL buy from you - when they're readyEdison Podcast Metrics measured podcast listener habits in 2020, and they found that weekly US listeners 34% bought products and services advertised in podcasts. In 2023 that number rose to 46%, which is highly encouraging when you're a business owner using your podcast as a business tool!Only 10-20% of your listeners will actually reach out online It's a shocking truth, but it's a low number that most hosts struggle with too! Podcast listeners truly need a strong incentive to reach out. If you're skeptical, just think about the amount of podcasts that you consume every single week, and the amount of times you actually reached out to the podcast's host - you'll likely believe me now! We all have these beliefs and ideas that we've picked up over the years and taken them on as "truths" without ever really questioning where they came from or whether they still serve us and our business. In today's episode, I'm sharing my own beliefs that I needed to change to grow my business to where it's at now.- Why trading time for money means that you're working harder NOT smarter.- How trying to control the outcome can zap your creativity (and your energy).- Why avoiding failure by over-planning and overthinking can actually slow down your success.- Why learning to become more comfortable with uncertainty creates space for ideas and creativity.- How to avoid getting stuck with finding the "right vision" and instead focus on what you want and how you want to show up in your business.Episodes mentioned:- Ep #467: Denise Duffield-Thomas on money mindset, launching and scaling to a multi-million dollar biz by doubling down on one product. I've always lived in organized chaos - are you the same?! But what I'm beginning to notice is that the organized parts of my life (like my actual balloon storage) are making the less organized parts of my life really stand out... and sometimes in a painful way. I've decided I need to find a more consistent and systematic decluttering process, not only for the physical, but for the mental and digital stuff of life, too. And while I'm not as concerned about the appearance of the physical clutter, I am seeing ways that it's hurting my functionality. Bit by bit, I've been losing floor space to work in. And I'm seeing how it's not only annoying to not be able to find things, but it's costing me time (and therefore money) and is also becoming somewhat hazardous. If you need some motivation to start your own decluttering process, I'll share (again) some thoughts of Denise Duffield-Thomas. She says that it's hard to attract larger jobs if deep down, you don't feel like you can actually fulfill them. And this is exactly what keeps me motivated to follow through with my decluttering. In the episode I also share a couple of more practical tactics I'm using to help me declutter my inventory and free up shop space... things like tracking the types of bases I use most, better storing my centerpieces, etc. Moving on to the mental and digital decluttering... this can really get out of hand if you let it! I'm so thankful that 17hats takes care of organizing all of my customer files, but some other things that I'm focused on decluttering digitally are: email & newsletters my computer desktop social media Dropbox / Google Drive phone apps As you listen you'll hear how excited I get about decluttering this digital stuff, because it's cleared up that much mental energy for me. I can't recommend it enough! Stay tuned on Instagram as I share the progress in my shop decluttering! And I hope this episode gives you that "permission" to finally get rid of some of those things you know you should have!     RESOURCES MENTIONED: 50% off your 1st year of 17hats  Balloon Suite  Havin' A Party Wholesale (save 5% with code BRIGHT)  Balloon Boss Summit & BalloonCoach.com   Ep. 142 - Convention Experiences | Steven of FLOAT & Balloon Designers  Ep. 102 -  Product Development | Lilly from The Creative Heart Studio  ____________________________ Support the show / join the book club  50 Ideas for Email Marketing | Join the Bright Balloon email list   planner | courses | templates  @thebrightballoon  The Bright Balloon on YouTube

139. Procrastibranding and placeholder marketing

The Bright Balloon

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2023 27:32

Today I want to share with you two concepts I learned from Denise Duffield-Thomas in her book Chill and Prosper, and they address how we can get past convincing ourselves that we aren't ready for the next step.   First is procrastibranding, where we tell ourselves that we can't: buy business cards because we don't have a website yet; or advertise for the next season because we haven't decided on our sales packages. There are so many ways that we can convince ourselves not to move forward! Instead, lean in on her second concept of placeholder marketing that will help you take some action. I actually just went through this procrastibranding - placeholder marketing situation with my Glow Retreat!   I kept feeling like the website had to be more built out, I needed more Instagram posts, I needed a better schedule, etc. but I was just too excited to announce it that I went for it anyway and was so delighted when it sold out on the first day. (Thanks again to everyone who signed up - I'm so incredibly excited to see you there!)   After I saw that happen it opened my eyes to some areas I've been procrastibranding in my balloon business, too. Things like: marketing the new props I get marketing for graduation season moving some things around on my website   And I'll tell you, once you start rolling with your placeholder marketing and discovering that you can succeed with it, those decision-making powers start to trickle out into the rest of your business, too! So, what do you do from here? First, know that everything is temporary. You can change it when the time comes. And your "placeholder" marketing might just do the job! Chances are, nobody will be looking that closely at your logo or your business card, etc.   Force yourself to take some action now so that you have the opportunity to improve them later. You won't make much money in your business if you're stuck in non-action.   What are some other ways we procrastinate in our businesses? Maybe you avoid putting systems like pricing guides or color charts in place, that you know will help your customers, but are afraid will box you in. That was me for so long but once I created these items I couldn't believe the difference in how much more quickly I was able to book my jobs. I'm also certain that the color chart has saved me tons of money because I don't need to chase every new color that comes on the market.   As you're listening and discover something that you've also been avoiding, I hope this episode motivates you to take action on at least one thing… today! Let me know!
