Today I set down with team Savage. Geoff Speyrer, Kat Carrier, Noel and Josh Voigt.Geoff served 12 years in the Army as a combat engineer and Infantryman. Upon returning home he had a tough time adapting to civilian life and he turned to addiction. Geoff was also given medication from the Army that adversely affected his health. He developed compartment syndrome and had to have a muscle amputated out of his leg leaving him with paralysis in his left foot. Geoff didn't realize or understand what PTSD and TBI was until he was so deep into addiction and selling drugs that he didn't even know how to ask for help nor did he really want it. For the next 13 years Geoff would suffer with addiction, battling suicide and being a fugitive for five and a half years. Then one day he decided to quit playing the blame game and take back his life. He started investing hard into his body and fitness and started to share his story that impacted many lives. Through his new found purpose he educates, inspires, entertains and builds communities that show up in realist and rawest ways. Kat Carrier - Mechanical engineer by day, Nutrition Coach by passion lives in Houston, TX with her Husband, Grant, & pup, Flapjack. She found her passion for both nutrition education & endurance sports after finding an outlet for her mental health & losing 60 pounds herself. Kat has completed several half & full marathons, 12 triathlons, including 3x 70.3s and 1 full Ironman.Noël is an ultra-marathon runner who has completed 14 official marathons, and ultra races ranging from 50km to 100 miles. She currently works as a Clinical Health Coach working primarily with the diabetic population. She also has a Kinesiology Degree with an Exercise Science Emphasis, and holds a Health Coach Certification from ACE. Noel has four beautiful dogs that she runs with daily. Josh is currently the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning at Emory and Henry College in Virginia. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA with a Kinesiology Degree with a Strength and Conditioning Emphasis. Imagine this scenario. You're 30 pounds overweight, and in fact you've been overweight pretty much all of your adult life. Perhaps you've lost some or all of this weight several times in the last 25 years. The times you've tried dieting have been awful. You were constantly hungry, you were cranky, and a few weeks into it your sleep started to deteriorate, only making matters worse. You started to despise the treadmill. But you stuck with it through sheer determination and willpower. And you lost the weight and finally got to return to some sense of normalcy. But a year later you are right back where you started. And perhaps you start the cycle all over again. You feel frustrated and defeated, perhaps you've internalized your inability to permanently lose this excess weight as your personal failure. But you've decided that this time is going to be different. New year, new you. Instead of following a diet you found online, or one that a friend suggested, you've hired a nutrition coach. And this nutrition coach isn't cheap, but they have a great reputation and track record of helping people achieve long-term sustainable weight loss. And three months into this program you've been dieting and keeping up with your exercise. Nothing crazy, you're a bit hungry some days, but it's manageable. Your workouts are three weight training sessions a week, as well as one cardio session a week, and on the other days you've gotten in the habit of going on long walks with your dog. You feel great, and you realize that you're halfway to your 30-pound weight loss goal. But then on your next check in call you coach tells you that they want you to stop dieting. In fact, they are going to increase the amount of food that you eat each day. Wait… what? Increase the amount you eat each day? But… won't that cause you to gain weight. Your coach informs you that yes, you'll likely see some weight gain, but just a little. And now you're thinking hold on… I'm paying my coach to help me lose weight – not gain it back. What's the deal here? I was doing so good. I'm halfway to my goal. Why in the world would I want to backtrack now? Your coach patiently explains that you're moving into a reverse dieting phase tat will las for the next 15 weeks. And you're thinking to yourself – reverse dieting – what is this BS? I'm here to lose weight – not gain it back!I've wanted to do an episode on reverse diets for a while now – what they are and why you might consider them. And one of the foremost experts on this subject is Holly Baxter. Holly is a 2x Natural World Champion Fitness Model and has a Master's degree in Dietetics, is an Accredited Dietician, is a fitness educator, and along with her husband Layne Norton were early pioneers in field of reverse dieting - and they even wrote the definitive book on the subject titled The Complete Reverse Dieting Guide.

We want to share a powerful analogy with you that may FINALLY give you that light bulb moment when it comes to metabolic resistance…. Imagine you are your dream car, whatever make and model it is. You start to notice that you aren't getting the gas mileage you used to… now what? Do you jam the pedal down to the floor hoping if you go faster, the gas mileage won't matter? This leads to more and more issues, the car redlines, breaks down, and now you're stuck with a beautiful car on the outside that can't drive anywhere. This is exactly what you are doing to your body when you have metabolic resistance. You push harder, slam more caffeine, become more and more reliant on cortisol and adrenaline, and eventually flatline with so many internal issues. We want you to slow down... One of the first tools that we tend to gravitate towards when we've committed to a weight loss program is some sort of cardiovascular exercise, like jogging, peloton, boot camp classes, and/or some sort of circuit-style training. Many of us have this perception that if our heart rates are elevated, if we're sweating, and we're out of breath, then we're burning more calories and therefore, burning more fat. Unfortunately that's simply not the case. Indeed, we may be burning more calories during that specific bout of exercise, but of more significance is how our body actually responds to the increase in calorie expenditure. If I wasn't to go in there, what other choice I'm going to have? No one's doing any intervention here so I need to do it for myself. Even though I craved someone just to tell me to stop.” “I think communication is huge. And then just asking him for his support. And I was like, "For now, do you mind not drinking?" He wasn't really a drinker anyway. If he drank it was because I was, and so he never drank at home. Still, he doesn't drink at home, if he does, which is rarely. So he's very supportive in that aspect.” “Just meeting other like-minded people, because alcoholism is very isolating. You feel like no one else feels the same way I do. And I think just going somewhere that everyone felt the same way, you're like, wow, I'm really not alone. That really helped, and having that community. And then also going to group classes, meeting other moms, other stay-at-home moms, other working moms, that helped tremendously. It's like you have that support. Rather than being alone, isolated, then you have support.” Questions I asked Beth include: “You're a champion for alcohol addiction recovery - tell us more about your story and experience with alcohol. Tell us more about the parallels and similarities related to food addiction and those stuck in the weight loss-regain cycle.” “What are two or three of the most common mistakes your clients are making, that, if quickly fixed, make a huge difference in their ability to achieve sustainable results?” “You describe yourself as a champion for personal growth: what does this look like for you and why is it important for everyone, especially moms listening?” “You've gone from stay-at-home mom to full-fledged life-changing business owner - how do you still make the time for yourself?” “You and I both know there's an abundance of BS in the health and fitness industry. Can vegans participate in endurance sports at the same level as their non-vegan counterparts? What are some of the challenges they face? We answer these questions [and more] in today's episode. Vic Johnson is a sports nutrition coach for outdoor athletes, working primarily with trail runners, cyclists, triathletes, skiers and other mountain athletes. There's a discouraging tell-tale sign of metabolic resistance many clients come to us with and we don't want you to be in the same boat... Me and my team of metabolism specialists have helped almost 1000 women fix their slow metabolisms. And from that we've learned how to very quickly identify when someone is “metabolically adapted” meaning their metabolism has slowed down in order to ADAPT to diets and/or undereating. This might be you if you have ever done any named fad diet like weight watchers, optavia, beach body, keto, paleo… and you didn't just do it the one time, lost weight, and then keep the weight off for life. If you've done a fad diet more than once because you regained the weight, or even worse you have done multiple different fad diets, then it is highly likely that you are metabolically adapted. Sure, you might see some results at first but the fact that you're losing /regaining the same weight over and over is going to put you in a place where you can't lose anymore weight no matter how hard you try. If you haven't done any fad diets, you tend to forget to eat meals or you don't feel very hungry during the day and accidentally under-eat, then you also are likely metabolically adapted. The test is if you are eating low calories and you are NOT consistently losing weight, then you are metabolically adapted. I had a consultation with a nice girl who has been eating 1300 calories for over a year, on top of doing burn bootcamp 3-4x week, and she's actually GAINED weight. I could tell her right away that she is metabolically adapted.
