Send Julie a text!!Sisters Jen and Julie Orchard of Royal Guernsey Creamery are a buttermaker and a dairy farmer, respectively, who produce small-batch, artisan butter using cream from their own herd of Guernsey cows.  The self-named "Butterettes" are 7th generation diary farmers that make four types of artisan, European-style butter. Jen & Julie started Royal Guernsey Creamery in 2020, and by 2023, they got the blue ribbon and grand champion title at the Wisconsin State Fair for the best butter in the Dairy State.Making butter is a 20-hour process that takes over two days to accomplish. Together they make 400 pounds at a time. They do everything from churning the butter... to creating the round, tube-shaped units... to packaging over 800 units in special foil. Both Jen and Julie stepped away from their family roots as dairy farmers to pursue other careers. Jennifer left a 15-year career in biotechnology to return to the family farm. Julie has more than 20 years of marketing experience working with clients in the field of animal health. They both came back to their family farm where they decided to start their business together. ** Random cow facts: Cows are wonderful creatures that love affection, have individual personalities, and enjoy interactions with their caretakers. Brown-and-white Guernsey cows today represent just 1% of the U.S. cattle population. (Versus the Holstein cows, which are black and white.) If you're going to raise them, you use their milk for something other than pooling it with other milk to maintain its quality.Jen & Julie Orchard - GuestsRoyal Guernsey Creamery IG accountRoyal Guernsey Creamery websiteJulie Berman - Podcast Host & ProducerJulie Berman's LinkedIn Profile@womencooljobs (Instagram)www.womenwithcooljobs.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I absolutely LOVE being the host and producer of "Women with Cool Jobs", where I interview women who have unique, trailblazing, and innovative careers. Since that time, I have worked in different areas of healthcare and gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in Wholistic Wellness. It's time to talk about Mean Girls, Echo, Lessons in Chemistry, Saltburn, Slow Horses, and superhero burnout. But Kevin can't do it alone so he's joined by Jen this week and our special "High School Experience" correspondent, Sydney.  The show starts right away with Jen and Sydney talking about the new Mean Girls Musical Movie. It's a great review and Sydney brings some fantastic insight, especially with regards to the music side of things. Both Jen and Sydney enjoyed the movie but they do differ on some parts so that sparks a lively conversation. Before jumping into Echo, Kevin quickly drops some numbers on just why superhero burnout might be a thing at this point. The sheer amount of product in our face in the last decade is staggering. That being said, he really enjoyed Echo and wants everyone to give it a go! Back to Jen and Sydney and they quickly cover Lessons in Chemistry starring Brie Larson. They really enjoyed that and even it's heavy early twist. They recommended it to Kevin who, at the time of this posting, has in fact started to watch it! Next up, Kevin catches us up on a show that should have been on everyone's radar a few years ago, Slow Horses. It's a British spy series on Apple TV+ starring Gary Oldman and it's really a great watch. There are 3 seasons on Apple TV+ now and it's been renewed for seasons 4 and 5 so now is a great time to dig into it. Kevin and Sydney take a walk on the animation side, really quick, covering the new Scott Pilgrim, One Piece, and Avatar the Last Airbender. Jen then starts to chat about Saltburn, only to have Sydney drop the bomb that she watched it, too!! But that's a good thing because we get two perspectives on it. This is another one that Kevin will have to get to ASAP.  As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Welcome back to another episode of our For the Love of Conversations series with one of Jen's best loved friends, author, speaker and podcaster  Kelly Corrigan. Both Jen and Kelly have seen strong beliefs give way to new beliefs, and old beliefs be tested by time and experience. It's a wonder to learn as you move through the world, even if those lessons are hard won and hands down, a ton of them are. It's a beautiful and redemptive thing to take a step back and level the playing field you are on–in whatever season of life you're in–and see if everything that makes up “you:”  all the stories you tell yourself about your life and other people and what happened to you and even about your own self–that composite of what you believe. And take heart in knowing  that your beliefs don't have to remain the same forever– they can grow and change with us. Jen and Kelly go deep into what beliefs they hold dear, how the truth that binds us might look a little different than it used to for all of us, and the comfort they find in a community that lives with a sense of curiosity and how to keep that alive for every phase of our beliefs.   * * * Thank you to our sponsors!   Rothy's | Get $20 off your first purchase at rothys.com/forthelove.    KiwiCo | Get 50% off your first month plus free shipping on any crate line at kiwico.com using code FORTHELOVE.    Betterhelp | Get 10% off your first month at betterhelp.com/forthelove.  Thought-Provoking Quotes   “I think we're built to evaluate instantly friend or foe. I think that's our evolutionary nature, but we're not on the Savannah anymore. We can take a minute to make that judgment. In fact, the longer we can hold off on making that judgment, maybe the more interesting people and stories we'll be able to consume in a lifetime.” – Kelly Corrigan    “None of us have everything exactly right because that's not a thing. There's no such thing as always right or always wrong. I just think we would become so much more interesting as a people if we were able to humbly take in a person's differing experience, or opinion, or worry. Those are the people that I want in my life right now. Those are the ones.” – Jen Hatmaker    “We can all love each other and not believe the same things. That's just not a requirement.” – Kelly Corrigan    “Is your version of faith making you kinder, is it making you more loving, is it making you more humble, is it creating peace around you, is it good to other people? That's a kind of faith I can get behind. If it's making you mean, and angry, and hateful, and scared, that needs reexamining.” – Jen Hatmaker  Kelly's LinksWebsite  Instagram Kelly's Podcast, Kelly Corrigan Wonders    Books & Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeKate Baer  Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's InstagramJen's Twitter Jen's FacebookJen's YouTube

We also cover how we got out of it: being present, giving yourself permission and sitting with reality, among other things. If you have other resources you can add to this, please share! Resources we mentioned: Counseling/therapy - finding a counselor who specializes in EMDR Books by Geneen Roth: 1) Breaking Free From Emotional (or Compulsive) Eating 2) Feeding the Hungry Heart 3) Women, Food and God 4) When Food is Love: Exploring the Relationship between Eating and Intimacy 5) Appetites: On the Search for True Nourishment 6) Take Back Your Life: Ending Your Obsession with Food Book: French Women Don't Get Fat References: Our Healthy Habit Series, #1 about Nutrition (complete with pictures of the figure competition I referenced - yes, next to last, girl next to me placed first https://musicstrong.com/healthyhabits1/) John Meadows - Multi-Olympia competitor @mountaindog1 on IG Our Multi-Vitamins: Jen's: Oxylent Angela: Source of Life Posts referenced: Set your macros for fat loss Angela's recommended supplements Another blog post from Angela as she was navigating these waters this blog post references coming out of "other people telling me what to eat" (dealing with lack of structure) rebelling against rules and Lyle McDonald's book "Flexible Dieting" (it's SANE).

In our second book club, Jen and Sarah Jane follow some dharmic threads through the ancient Taoist text the “Tao Te Ching” by Laozi and enjoy the poetic language used to, somehow, beautifully illuminate something that cannot be defined. The Tao is the source of everything and the way of life, and this text invites us to align ourselves and our lifestyle with the natural order of things. In their discussion, Jen and Sarah Jane focus on just a couple of themes: effortless action (wu wei), as well as Taoism’s Three Treasures: compassion, frugality, and humility. Both Jen and Sarah Jane’s teaching practices and offerings have been informed by years of study and practice in Yin Yoga, which is based in Taoist energy practices. Their appreciation for the text, the lineages it has birthed, and the teachers who transmit its teachings is great. If it has been years since you read the pithy 81 chapters that constitute this metaphysical classic, or you haven’t yet picked it up, you won’t want to miss this.  As Skillful Means Podcast heads into a partial summer break (though Jen and Sarah Jane will continue adding guided practices to the podcast feed), you are invited to also drop into simplicity inspired by advice both practical and profound of the “Tao Te Ching.”Tao Te Ching Translations Used in this Episode"Tao Te Ching Online Translation" is Derek Lin and Lama Surya Das’s “Tao Te Ching: Annotated & Explained.” https://taoism.net/tao/tao-te-ching-online-translation/“Tao Te Ching” translated by Gia-fu Feng, Jane English, and Toinette Lippe: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780679724346"Tao Te Ching" translated by Wikisource: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Translation:Tao_Te_ChingOnline ProgramsJen leads Yin Yoga teacher trainings and is offering a 35hr Yin Yoga & Taoism virtual course in June 2021. This week our special guest is contemporary romance author Suzanne Winslow. Suzanne has just released her debut book, Burned (Smoke and Fire Series Book 1). The book is very well written, and a sweet story about second chances and blended families. Suzanne is a fairly new reader of J.D. Robb's "In Death" series, but has some great insights to share! We discuss how Eve and Roarke started their own families, first Roarke with Summerset, then Eve with Feeney and Mavis. Eve and Mavis' relationship puzzles AJ...but it makes perfect sense to Suzanne. We all love Peabody, but who doesn't? Jen feels like McNab is one of the most underrated characters of the series. Both Jen and Suzanne love Baxter, and may have to fight over him, while AJ much prefers Jake Kincaide, (but that's a bit of a spoiler). Eve has a good mother figure in Mira, and we all love how Eve has a bit of a crush on Mr. Mira. For Roarke, the sad part is that he doesn't seem to have many friends. he has Richard and Elizabeth, but they are not around much. So we're so happy that Nora gave Roarke a whole big biological family in Ireland. We also all love Brian Kelly. We also talk about how their family circle is growing with Mavis and Leonardo's daughter, Bella, and discuss the ever present question of "when are Eve and Roarke going to have a baby?" Suzanne brings up Summerset as Roarke's father figure...the character we love to hate. Undeniably, Summerset and Roarke have a special and unbreakable bond. We do think that despite everything, Summerset and Eve really do like each other. After all, Eve did advocate for Summerset when he had a broken leg and wanted the cat. Jen as a lifelong Michigander, is thrilled to find out that Suzanne's whole "Smoke and Fire" series is set in Grand Rapids, which is where Jen lives! AJ is in Southern California, and she and Suzanne talk about the gorgeous Temecula Valley wine country! Look for Suzanne's next book, "Bailout," to be released in January 2021 on Amazon. This week we pivot a bit and tackle a serious topic: grief and loss. Death is something that none of us are immune to or exempt from. Whether it's a spouse, a parent, a job, divorce; loss shows up whether we want it to or not. Our very own Jen gets interviewed about her experience losing her Mom and then Dana interviews her friend Leah, who lost her husband and her best friend this past year. Both Jen and Leah share what gets them out of bed in the mornings and their strength for those suffering deep loss. They also give suggestions of how NOT to help, especially what not to say, and how to support your loved ones when they experience loss. Losing someone we love is hell, and life keeps moving even when it feels like it shouldn't. Our hope is that this episode can offer a little of that very thing to those who need to hear it...hope.

Her educational background is a Master’s degree in Strategy and Innovation from AUT University. Jen has worked with over 100 purpose-driven businesses in Europe, New Zealand and Australia and has led an impact investing initiative that supported mission-driven entrepreneurs towards their first capital raise.Jamin’s professional career was mostly spent in the field of helping people develop health and resilience. He was the director of three leading organizations and has worked with over 15 000 people from diverse communities all over Australia and North America. In 2016, they co-founded Mountains and Marathons in order to help people who are motivated, curious and want to take their career to the next level while making a positive impact on society. They offer transformative leadership programs centered around preparation and completion of challenging physical feats that involve some of the world’s most beautiful places. For 6 months, they provide their clients with physical training, mindset coaching, and community support. The main goal of the programs is to help people develop courage, clarity, and confidence which they will later use to take the next big step in their life and career. So far, they’ve been to San Francisco, conquered the Great Wall of China and climbed Mont Blanc, with mesmerizing projects involving Everest and Melbourne on the way. Both Jen and Jamin have taken the path of inspired evolution, dealing with challenges and adversity head-on, coming out the other end transformed and determined to help others do the same.Connect with Jen:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenniferziegner/?locale=en_USFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jennifer.ziegner.1Website: http://mountainsandmarathons.world/Connect with Jamin:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamin-heppell/?originalSubdomain=auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jamin.heppellWebsite: http://mountainsandmarathons.world/Jen’s and Jamin’s Story of Inspired EvolutionJamin was running three independent companies and they were all focused on social change and community development. He found himself in a situation of constantly giving, day in, day out, spending little to no time to replenish his energy and take care of himself.“To use the analogy of your cup being full before you can then give to others, I was just continuing to take from the reserve tank more and more.” - Jamin HeppellEven though with intentions in mind, by not taking care of his own personal mental health, Jamin ended up in a dark place, feeling burnt out and depressed. Through introspection and reflection, he was able to come up with a very insightful observation. He realized that his own choices were the cause of his problems, but rather than dwelling on this thought and beating himself up about it, he understood that his choices have the power to take him out of this place and give him the opportunity to transform.“There were two questions… “If I were to live my most values aligned life, how would my life be different?” And then the follow-up question to that was: “If I could do anything in the world right now, what would I be doing?” - Jamin HeppellIt just so happens that the answer to his question was “running marathons and climbing mountains all around the world.”Jen and Jamin met a little after Jamin had the idea for Mountains and Marathons. Her first impression was that it wasn’t something she’d be interested in.“I grew up as a super unfit child, I’ve never done any sports and earlier in my life I’ve made up this whole identity of “I’m a person who can’t do much, physically”, and never ran more than a 5k.” - Jen Ziegner But when she realized that the narrative of not being an athletic type was her own creation, she also felt that she could do something about it. Similarly to Jamin, she used the realization of her own contributions to the problem in order to fuel and empower herself to overcome it. The whole story coincided with her feeling unchallenged in her professional life. To a sense, you could say that Jen and Jamin were their own first clients. The Imposter Syndrome“Where this got created from is such a place of a deep inquiry.” - Jamin HeppellThe imposter syndrome is defined as “a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a “fraud". Even though the evidence of a person’s competence is clear to everyone else, they remain convinced that they don’t deserve what they’ve achieved. Jamin lists constant confrontation of the imposter syndrome as one of his deepest personal adversities. Every day he challenges the notion of being undeserving by reminding himself of the values and all the good behind the work he and Jen are doing.“It’s usually when I’m not feeling good or when the bad stories are coming up and all the stories that are holding me back, it comes from a place of comparison.” - Jen Ziegner Jen takes us further on our exploration of the imposter syndrome and shares her insights regarding why and when are these irrational thoughts most potent. The main weapon both Jen and Jamin are wielding to preserve themselves from being affected is centered with the idea that their work is reflecting their deepest values. By always having that safety line, they are able to draw strength from it and successfully deal with bad thoughts.A Message of Inspired Evolution“It really is about creating an adventurous opportunity to really transform your life from one stage to the next in whatever context that is.” - Jamin HeppellJen’s and Jamin’s inspirational story is one of creating experiences through choice and choosing your identity beyond its limitations. The programmes they’ve created are comprised of courage and in their foundation are calls to action. Inviting us to take action in our lives and make that transition no matter how afraid we are. By doing so we will find that:“On the other side of fear is nothing but possibility.” - Jamin and Jen See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

She shares her invaluable insights on this episode of #InTheArena, and it’s a conversation you don’t want to miss. Listen now! @Iannarino Click To Tweet #1 - Why do you need to pursue your own leads as a sales leader? Most salespeople enter into the business wanting to make a difference, either in their own life or in the lives of others. Why is it, then, that so many salespeople sit back and seemingly wait for marketing to send them quality leads? You cannot afford to rely on others to make your career happen, and you have to be diligently working on securing your own top leads. Start talking with everyone you meet, and don’t hesitate to act because you’re waiting for the “perfect lead” to appear that simply doesn’t exist. #2 - What can you do to become a better networker? Networking can change your life if you let it, but great networking is not about quantity. The ultimate goal of networking should always be about making quality connections with people who can either send you business referrals or add value to your life. How can you make those types of connections? Start by being specific and targeted in the meetings and groups you pursue. Then, become a value-provider for the people you meet. You can’t expect quality results from new connections if you don’t first convince them you’re worth building a relationship with. No matter what market you’re involved in, the temptation to make excuses for poor performance is always present. Making better sales starts with taking responsibility for your action - and inaction. Both Jen and Anthony believe in the power of a great mindset and attitude when striving for selling success. Take 10 minutes and identify your top excuses that you tell yourself and your boss. Then, figure out ways to crush those excuses. The minute you stop making excuses is the minute you start making better sales. #4 - How can you become the CEO of your territory? If you aspire to become the CEO of your sales territory, you can’t spend all your time analyzing every decision. Company CEOs take action and implement strategies daily - they don’t overthink everything. This is a deep dive episode of the Tech of Business podcast! Today we're showcasing a couple of key tech decisions I've made with my clients recently. The goal of today's episode is to understand a bit more the role of software decisions in business. Last week, Sam and I were in Las Vegas on vacation since our girls were away at summer camp. While we were there, I went live on Facebook once from the pool deck… and this livestream was titled “Tech itself isn't sexy… but what you can do with a great tech stack is…” And we're continuing that conversation right now… In general, I'm tool agnostic... I'll work with just about any software service that has come across my desk even if I believe that there is a better option out there. Everything that tech can do for businesses (and hobbyists and non-profits) is incredible… In isolation the tech itself is just not fun to explore and implement. It's a chore and something that most folks would rather outsource and say “Just tell me the best option for xyz…” That's really what I mean by tech being so “un-sexy.” When I come to you with the exact right piece of technology for the next phase of your business, the idea of new technology is sure to evoke some aspirations and optimism. And a second later, for most businesses, there is also a distinct dread or lack of emotion which comes from knowing that there will be a learning curve, immediate outflow of cash and likely integration issues when it comes to fully bringing this new tool into the fold. And, whether you're a solo entrepreneur, have a small team, run an agency or are getting ready to franchise your operations… similar issues creep in. This is a time where I don't believe the 80-20 rule applies. There is a distinct advantage to fully implementing the new tech rather than getting minimum viable functionality out of it. Because the sexy part comes in the last 20%. Let's dig into a couple of recent clients of mine and how we made tech decisions that are right for their business now and to carry the required amount of weight into the next chapter of your business. Both the client stories are revolving around taking payments – because we all like to make it easy for our clients and customers to buy from us. My client Jen has a thriving Thinkific site. She has dozens of courses on the platform, is offering completion and continuing education certificates on some of the courses and has recently brought on additional instructors. She also has some of the courses available for affiliate promotions. Initially, the built-in payment system on Thinkific was all she needed. But as she built out the school, she felt that her needs may have outgrown the system and we began to look at additional payment portals and mechanisms for managing the greatest needs. Let's break it down. Jen's students need to be able to purchase her courses Jen needs to pay her instructors when each of their courses is purchased. This will be at one of two rates, depending on if the student purchased through the instructor link or not. Jen needs to identify affiliate-initiated transactions since compensation agreements are in place with influential parties in her industry. Jen needs to have split pay and recurring payment options available and where the student can manage their credit card on file Jen needs this to be easy since she doesn't have a full-time accounting department Both Jen and I are familiar with ThriveCart which looked like a great option for providing the functionality that Jen was seeking… And I go crazy for setting up integrations and finding the best right solution, selfishly I wanted ThriveCart to be the right solution for Jen because it would mean a ton of the work that I love to do. But we cannot jump into tech blindly, so we weighed the benefits and drawbacks of the built in Thinkific payment system against ThriveCart with the specific lens on ease of use for Jen and her team.     I really wanted ThriveCart to be the right solution for her, because I imagined so many other things we could do – including upsells, downsells and add-ons. But when we put our heads to the problem that we were solving, the answer became apparent that using the built in Thinkific solution was a better option for selling the vast majority of her Thinkific courses. ThriveCart sounds sexy… it's a great interface and creates an enjoyable payment experience but in truth it's simply a mechanism for taking payments and managing affiliates. And when we looked at it, what we really needed was something that did that job without a lot of overhead for Jen and her team. Had we implemented ThriveCart fully, more work would be required for every new course, every new affiliate and every new instructor. So, we put ThriveCart on the shelf. And it's a huge weight lifted off both of our shoulders. The upsides of ThriveCart do not outweigh the costs of implementing and maintaining it for Jen's core business. In Jen's case, the rationale for looking at ThriveCart was a bit of shiny object and possibly FOMO but as you'll see with the next client story, the simple and straightforward payment processing inside Thinkific is no necessarily enough to fulfill the requirements. This next client is Stephanie. She and her company are in Canada and need to charge tax on top of course prices. We wanted to find a sexy solution that included a magic button to charge the exact right amount of tax and track it seamlessly. But there isn't a magic button and the solution was totally not sexy – we cobbled together a solution that would help their team sell their courses and report tax right, every single time. The solution we came up with is to use Thinkific for course delivery with Zapier for student enrollment. Student purchases are done directly on their WordPress website using a custom plugin that I wrote. This plugin uses Stripe for payment processing and overlays Taxamo for tax calculation. And the Taxamo transaction became the Zapier trigger to enroll the student. Here is a diagram of the components and how they work together: It's a lot of moving parts and while each component has a specific job, and this is what I mean when I say that tech isn't sexy. Nobody likes to run or support a many step process unless there is no alternative. Just as with Jen, Stephanie and I didn't come to this solution lightly. We evaluated Taxamo against other tax-charging tools and determined that for her needs, Taxamo was best. At the outset both Stephanie and I knew that we would be able to create a solution that would meet the goals and provide the desired purchase and enrollment experience. I had hoped it would take fewer hops across the web and far fewer hours to setup, but when we flipped the virtual switch and started processing live customer transactions, there was nothing better! There are a large number of software solutions that can work to help you with compliance, streamlining and automation. The key point that I hope you take away from today's conversation is to clearly identify why you are looking to add a new piece of software to your tech stack and also understand how to determine if it is the next right choice for you and your business goals.   Are you looking at bringing in a new software or tool to your business? I invite you to book a tech strategy session with me. It's at https://techofbusiness.com/strategy-session/ Together we'll be able to determine how, when and if to add to your tech stack. More snow was expected in KC today, so it's a cold #TheShowKC. The first half hour has Truta trying to figure out a child's tongue twister based on Sixpence None the Richer...which we figure out later was "sing a song of sixpence." Entertainment News brought us the story of the Oscar Stealer. Someone brings up being voted Most Likely To Succeed. We wonder if anyone on The Show made those lists. Both Jen and Truta's schools did not do them, and Joey didn't make the cut. One texter's kid was voted Most Likely to Join the Army -- and he's going to when he graduates! Jen's dad was voted Most Likely to use a flip phone, and that has us reminiscing about our first cell phones. The Vent Line opens with thoughts on people who don't use their blinkers, people who take enormous amounts of selfies, and the WIND! Haha - that was a good one. Nobody on The Show likes the Bachelor, but we heard last night's finale was particularly cringeworthy, so we dial up our Bachelor expert - Natalie Rush from the afternoon show who fills us in all of the Arie goodness. We'll have to watch again tonight on Round 2! See you tomorrow!

Real-life married couple, Serafina Palandech and Jen Johnson are the founders of Hip Chick Farms. They make organic, transparently sourced, chef-inspired frozen chicken and poultry products that are loved by kids. Their products have no preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, or fillers in their products and the founders care about the animals. This is more than just a product. It’s a different way of doing business. This family company had humble beginnings a few years ago, while facing huge challenges just two years in, that would make most people quit the business. Now they’re doing great, expanding business in new ways and in new regions, and literally impacting an entire industry. Serafina and Jen invited me to their farm in Sebastopol, CA, located in the Sonoma Wine Country. It was a perfect setting, to truly see how animals are part of their everyday life. And just wait until you hear the variety of animals they have at their home. In our conversation, we discuss why this couple created a chicken company, the challenges and what got them through them, how their local community played a large role in learning the business, the evolving purpose of their company, discrimination and visibility, and loads more. Both Jen and Serafina are smart and driven, and they’re also full of charm — and this easily comes through in the interview. We laugh a lot, and it just flows. KC102.1 was nominated for a major award and none of us can afford to buy tickets for the banquet to see if we win. B&B Theatres presents the new movies feature and this week we talk Baywatch and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Truta compares himself to Zac Efron and The Rock. Casi Joy from the Voice joins us in studio to talk about her upcoming tour and performance in Kansas City. Like Truta, she was late getting going because her alarm failed her. We rope Casi into playing the Shazam game, which is Truta's new favorite game show. For a second it appeared as if no one would get anything right. More entertainment news and then Jen and Truta discuss the new Netflix show The Keepers, which is about a nun. Both Jen and Truta went to Catholic school and both either fainted or puked in church. Jen and John were encouraged by medical professionals to abort Jackson after he was diagnosed with encephalocele.  They chose to carry him to term and thrilled they did. Jackson is now a thriving two year old who is proving doctors don't always know best.  Proving medical professionals wrong The worst birthday ever Jen and John went in for an ultrasound on John's birthday.  After the ultrasound tech was acting weird Jen recalled, “I just kept asking ‘is everything okay?’ She was acting quiet and just kept saying ‘The doctor will come in and talk to you.’..Then the doctor came in..he pretty much drew out the picture and told us that if we did continue our pregnancy, our baby would either terminate itself and not go to full-term, or he would have no quality of life if we continued.” John added, “That was tough with everything going on and every doctor saying ‘Oh you should terminate your pregnancy’ it was kind of a tough thing because we had our other daughter Jacelynn with no problems.  Then we tried so hard to get pregnant with him, and it was my worst birthday ever.” Jackson had an encephalocele on the back of his head Despite what they had been told, Jackson was thriving when he was born. They had anticipated him to be transferred to Primary Children's Hospital, Jackson however, stayed in the well unit the entire time.   After he was born, it was discovered he had some other issues.  Jen shared, “He was born with an encephalocele on the back of his head.  It did have a little bit of cerebellum in it that was removed...at seven weeks.  We found out that he had skin tags on his ears, and one of his ears didn’t develop.  When they looked at his underdeveloped ears, they also looked at his kidneys. He has a horseshoe kidney and a transverse liver.  He has five spleens. He also has a pacemaker.” What does that all mean? An encephalocele is a sack of fluid that can form on various parts of the skull.  It happens when the skull doesn’t fuse properly and parts of the brain protrude out.   A horseshoe kidney is when the kidney fuses together at the base and forms one kidney in the shape of a ‘U’.   “The hardest thing is dealing with everybody else’s negativity” Even though Jackson has several medical issues, John said hearing the negativity surrounding Jackson has been the toughest part.  He said, “It was basically us against the world mentality pretty much because everyone was so negative.”   Jen and John were repeatedly told by several medical professionals as well as some family members that their decision to not terminate the pregnancy was not smart. He was supposed to be a vegetable John shared what happened at an ultrasound, saying, “They told us at the ultrasounds, ‘Only two of his limbs are moving, so he might have had a stroke inside the womb that has paralyzed half of his body.’..pretty much since he’s come out, it has been nothing but positive, positive, positive.” Both Jen and John agree that having Jackson in their family has been nothing but joy.  Jen stated, “..everyday he smiles. He wakes up happy. He is probably the happiest kid, always having a smile on his face.  He is loving. He always gives big kisses. I would just say his spirit is so sweet.” John added, “No matter what, everything he does is always positive.  No matter what he goes through, he’s always positive..he brings everybody together..he makes everybody smile.  You don't ever see anybody sad with him.” Advice for other parents It was easy for Jen and John to share what advice they would give other parents if they were in a similar situation.  Jen said, “I would just show you my son and tell you not to terminate, to continue, and seriously recognize the power of prayer..he is hitting almost every milestone.  He is a little delayed, but he will be walking soon..he crawls and climbs” John said, “If you feel like it’s in your best interest and the best choice for your family to go along with terminating, then that’s on you,
