Welcome back to a new week, folks. Today is, February 8 and we are celebrating a National Holiday that, to be honest, seems a little strange to be celebrating in the middle of winter, no matter what Punsxutaney Phil said last week. Don't take it the way this sounds (or, perhaps, take this statement exactly as it sounds)… Go Fly a Kite! Because today, is National Kite Flying Day.Welcome to Talkocast's podcast, Everyday's a Holiday - no really, it is!Did you know that literally EVERY DAY is a holiday? I don't know about you, but I love having a reason to celebrate everyday. Whether it's your favorite food's day,  or something else totally random, happy holiday to you!Origins of this holiday are a little flighty, but it seems as though it may have originated in South America where kite festivals were held around this time of year. Which, would make much more sense as it'd be warm in South America in February.Kites, were first used in ancient China by their military over 3,000 years ago, dating back to around 470 BC. There's a lot of local lore about the origins of the kite, pointing to the way the wind affects the leaves fluttering on trees, and harnessing power in the sail of their boats. JThe earliest of kites were made from bamboo or reeds for the frame, with leaves, silk, and paper made the perfect sails. The lines were made from vines or braided fibers, and it became not just a military tool to guide ships or send messages, but for ceremonies providing offerings to the gods.Did you know that the longest kite measured 3,394 feet? The fastest kite had a record speed of 120 mph, and the longest kite trip ever recorded was 180 hours STRAIGHT!While most of you would need to bundle up in order to celebrate this holiday, it is a fun and colorful way to get outside.Let's go fly a kite, up to the highest height!Happy Holiday everyone, and I'll see you tomorrow.https://todayaholiday.com/national-kite-flying-day/Photo by Ana GG on Unsplash

There is honestly nothing better in my opinion than getting something in the mail. Even when I order something online - I get giddy when I open up the package. I even like to stagger my online ordering habits so that I always have something to look forward to opening. Weird, right? Well, turns out there's some science behind that philosophy by way of endorphins - and did you know that reaching out to your friends the old fashioned way is good for you, too? Those with stronger friendship networks are actually proven to live longer! No, I don't mean the number of friends you have on social media, I mean true friends. The concept of sending greeting cards dates as far back as 15th century Europe, with mass production of cards beginning in the 1860s. Hallmark, created by Joyce C. Hall in 1910, is the largest - and oldest- manufacturer of cards in America. While this holiday may have been created by the card companies - I may not be able to prove it, but it's a solid assumption, the fact is, this is an awesome holiday to celebrate. Pick out a personal card for a friend so that they know just how much they mean to you. I promise, you'll make their day, and You might just get one back!Happy Holiday everyone - and I'll see you tomorrow.https://todayaholiday.com/national-send-a-card-to-a-friend-day/Photo by Bundo Kim on Unsplash

Today's holiday is one that is actually celebrated on the first Saturday in February annually, which happens to be today - Saturday, February 6. It's time to put on the stretchy pajama pants folks, cause today eat ice cream for breakfast day!Perhaps like most wacky holidays out there, eat ice cream for breakfast day started out of pure boredom. It was the 1960s, and a Mother of 6, Florence Rappaport began this tradition on a snowy winter day in Rochester, NY. She decided that with the gray skies and snow, she needed something for her kiddos to look forward to. This holiday has actually become an INTERNATIONAL sensation, with confirmed celebrations from China to Israel, too!I'm so glad that this holiday is not limited to just kids, because it seems like every time I asked to eat ice cream for breakfast when I was a youngster, the answer usually went like this - when you're a grownup, you can eat whatever you want. Well, I sure wish I knew about this holiday back then, but at least I do now, so take that mom and dad! Banana splits for breakfast for all!If you want to be the coolest parent around, embrace this holiday! Tell your kids in advance about it and make it a big family celebration every year. This could be the beginning of a beautiful and delicious tradition. In the middle of winter in tough year, what better way to bring a smile to the whole family's faces than a a few scoops of ice cream with a fresh waffle? Or, enjoy my personal favorite, an affogato - which is espresso poured over ice cream.Count me in!Happy Holiday everyone - and I'll see you tomorrow.https://todayaholiday.com/eat-ice-cream-for-breakfast-day/Photo by Ross Sokolovski on Unsplash

Okay friends, it's Friday, February 5 and today's holiday is for the conservationists out there - to save water. It's National Shower with a Friend Day.While the creation of this holiday started perhaps innocently enough, it's a sure fire way to heat things up today. This national holiday began when a Colorado company called New Wave Enviro encouraged people to take showers with a “friend,” but with their marketing prowess, really meant its all-new shower filter. They had a pretty genius reason to get folks to shower with their new filter by stating “Your body absorbs more chlorine through the skin and lungs while showering than while drinking tap water.”Taking a shower with a friend is also simply put, responsible. A 5 minute shower alone uses 20 gallons of water! So on this day, you can save some chlorine intake and one of earth's most valuable resource by doubling up and scrub a dub dub. As far as instructions and ideas go on how to celebrate, probably safe to say I should leave it at that!Happy Holiday everyone - and I'll see you tomorrow.https://todayaholiday.com/national-shower-with-a-friend-day/Photo by Autri Taheri on Unsplash
