Hello to you, Marilyn, listening in Hancock, New Hampshire!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington, this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Wednesdays on Whidbey—this final day of the old year—and your host, Diane Wyzga. Shoveling Snow With Buddha by Billy Collins"In the usual iconography of the temple or the local Wokyou would never see him doing such a thing, tossing the dry snow over the mountainof his bare, round shoulder, his hair tied in a knot,a model of concentration. Sitting is more his speed, if that is the wordfor what he does, or does not do. Even the season is wrong for him.In all his manifestations, is it not warm and slightly humid? Is this not implied by his serene expression, that smile so wide it wraps itself around the waist of the universe? But here we are, working our way down the driveway, one shovelful at a time.We toss the light powder into the clear air.We feel the cold mist on our faces. And with every heave we disappearand become lost to each otherin these sudden clouds of our own making, these fountain-bursts of snow. This is so much better than a sermon in church,I say out loud, but Buddha keeps on shoveling. This is the true religion, the religion of snow, and sunlight and winter geese barking in the sky,I say, but he is too busy to hear me. He has thrown himself into shoveling snowas if it were the purpose of existence,as if the sign of a perfect life were a clear drivewayone you could back the car down easilyand drive off into the vanities of the worldwith a broken heater fan and a song on the radio. All morning long we work side by side,me with my commentaryand he inside the generous pocket of his silence, until the hour is nearly noonand the snow is piled high all around us;then, I hear him speak. After this, he asks, can we go inside and play cards? Certainly, I reply, and I will heat some milkand bring cups of hot chocolate to the tablewhile you shuffle the deck, and our boots stand dripping by the door. Aaah, says the Buddha, lifting his eyesand leaning for a moment on his shovelbefore he drives the thin blade againdeep into the glittering white snow."My New Year wish for you: As the old year folds onto itself and the new year dawns I wish for you that your everyday activities, even the very simple tasks, bring humor, contemplation, and a sense of magic in the ordinary. May you find your way on the path following a compass heading of True North. May the love you seek wend its way to you. Julie Colombino-Billingham was working in disaster response 15 years ago, and was in Haiti after the earthquake of 2010. She never went back. She fell in love with the resilience and kindness of the people, and started a business with them called Deux Mains (two hands), making sustainable, fair trade leather bags and accessories - and also school shoes for students that they sell to churches and ministries to distribute. These beautiful bags are sold in Nordstrom! During the time she's been working with the people of Haiti, Julie's interviewed residents and documented her time, and launched her memoir earlier this month - it's called From Loss to Legacy: How a Fashion Business Rose from Haiti's Rubble. All book proceeds will go to REBUILD globally, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting poverty in Haiti through education and job training.Julie wants to relay the message of the power of our purpose - that our purchases make a global impact.Deux Mains website is here: https://deuxmains.com/pages/our-story-2Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/deuxmains_official/Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DeuxMainsDesigns/They're on Pinterest here: https://www.pinterest.com/deuxmainsdesigns/Julie's TedX Talk is here: https://youtu.be/XE76NResiUcSend me a message!Support the showLike this episode? As everyone is seeing their electricity bills rise, the opportunity to speak with Our Power Maine came up. I'm speaking with the Executive Director Seth Berry, and Policy and Communications Fellow Isabelle Winstead - just days after they succeeded in pausing what seemed to many as a huge increase in Maine's CMP (Central Maine Power) rates. It's historic to halt the monopoly of a utility like this, and they are very happy to share why they are so passionate about helping Mainers to have other options. And don't feel left out if you're not in Maine - Our Power is in several states, and even if not, you can reach out to Our Power Maine and they'll get you in touch with someone to help.Seth and Our Power Maine are focused on transparency and energy democracy, and with good reason. He brought up the Halloween storm of 2017, and I said I started saving all the electric bills I received after that storm, because CMP sent me 3 bills in 1 month. We talked about Maine Community Power Cooperative (MCPC), and breaking the monopoly that CMP has with Maine's energy. MCPC offers up to 20% savings for CMP customers. This conversation was enlightening and encouraging, and I hope you'll reach out to them, to learn more about how we can take our own power backOur Power site: https://ourpowermaine.org (remember, you don't need to be a Maine resident to ask questions!)They're on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/ourpowerme/On Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/ourpowermaine/And Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/company/our-power-maine/Another resource is https://www.efficiencymaine.com/Send me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Y'all, sometimes things just fall into place, and the chance to talk with Annamarie Pluhar is definitely one of those! As I'm in the process of selling my VA house and looking for a new place to live, and knowing that to grow food for more than 1 will take more time and energy than I have, partnering with folks feels like it needs to be part of my plan (always was, but less for the financial aspect), but then enters Annamarie into my world with all her experience and wisdom...Annamarie has been sharing housing for years, and has created a guidebook of things that are helpful if you're planning to share space. She shows how sharing housing is a way to live sustainably, happily, and with greater ease. You can find Annamarie's website here: https://sharinghousing.com/ (find her book, Sharing Housing: A Guidebook for Finding and Keeping Good Housemates here)She's on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/sharinghousingcommunity/And on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/SharingHousing/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are off on a magical adventure to the North Pole! We watched the 2004 film from Robert Zemeckis, The Polar Express. We are curious, if we exhibit signs of doubting the existence of Santa Claus, does that mean we too can be whisked away by some version of Tom Hanks to be proven wrong? If that's possible, then Santa who? What Claus? That might not have been why our Hero Boy had his suspicions, but it sure as heck worked out well for him. He got to drink the tastiest hot chocolate ever! He made new friends! He met the real freaking Santa Claus! Live from NABPAC's annual holiday luncheon, between hot chocolate refills and holiday cheer, we reflect on what makes this PAC community unique.
When I was approached by Brett Aldrich's team, I wasn't quite sure how the conversation would go - if it would be something you would be interested in; but maybe this convo was more for me than you? I booked a visit with her, at least! You'll hear me fumble my way around what I thought Ayurveda was (clearly I'm wrong), but Brett's practice is absolutely fascinating to me! Did you know about Ayurveda before today?Brett's practice is located in Maine, but she offers virtual visits as well, which is how my appointment will be the day before this airs! She touched on the topic of elements, which I've never heard of (not like the table of elements), and I had too many questions to let it go - so I've got an hour and 1/2 with her to get caught up. To quote Brett: "Just as the earth is made up of natural elements, so are we." She also said this: "sustainability begins within ourselves."My takeaway: what we take into our bodies matters - it either helps or hinders, and if we understand that and take notice of our body's response, we may just have an easier go of life. That's not really new info to me, but the delivery was everything to me. I'm so looking forward to some extra time with Brett and learn about my elements, and how to live better with that info! I hope you learned something new in this conversation, too!You can find all things Brett here: https://seedthespirit.com/She's on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/p/Seed-The-Spirit-LLC-61575858674934/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Amy, JJ and Robbie try A LOT of hot chocolates to find the best one in Fargo/ Moorhead. Here's how it shook out: Tied for first - Vampire Penguin and Caribou, Tied for third - Northstar and Kwik Star, in the middle, a legit pick - Moonrise Cafe and at the bottom of the list, in no particular order (and probably more on the cocoa side) - Koda, Starbucks and Sifted and Sweet Baking Co. I was first introduced to Clara Schroeder through recent podcast guest Brittany Hansen, knowing that I would love talking with Clara - I'm super grateful to Brittany for that!Clara is an Eco Therapist who has been working with big companies like Microsoft, Women in Cloud, Aura, and Insight Timer, and more. Clara recently published ReNature: How Nature Helps Us Feel better and Do Better, and she's here to talk about that, and about what EcoTherapy is. Her goal is to help people to deepen the connection to the natural world so they can find well being, hope and resilience. One of the things Clara said was "When you love and care for yourself with intention and sustainable action, you are loving and caring for the earth." And to quote another recent podcast guest Vince Aiello, "We are nature," so that makes so much sense, right?I loved getting to talk with Clara - I hope you enjoy it, too!You can find all things Clara here: https://www.claraschroeder.com/She's also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/livingwithclarity/She's on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/clara-schroeder-ma/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) This conversation is a little heavier than most, but it's so important to talk about. I can honestly say I knew almost nothing about West Virginia before I came across these ladies, but I can't say that anymore. Julie Eisenberg and Babette Hogan are here to talk about their first documentary together that just debuted called Running for the Mountains. "This is about politics and keeping our water and air safe, requiring political action; and keeping West Virginia safe is of national importance. "Running for the Mountains" exposes some of the toxic structure that allows the polluting of our commons. Step up and into politics!" (Babette's words)I'm not going to try to describe the film; it's too complex (Babette said it in 1 sentence, but I didn't write it down), but I can say I honestly learned a ton about the WV lifestyle and people, and the direction the political climate has been heading, and it makes me both sad and scared - and also SO proud of those who are fighting. Babette and Julie have spent a good part of the last 15 years researching, following people and stories, and filming in WV, and they have seen a lot to have strong feelings about. I didn't finish the film the first time through- I literally turned my phone OFF because I got so mad. But I was expected to finish it, so I watched again. These ladies did a wonderful job of catching so many personalities and opinions through this film that you really feel protective of the people. And they need that, and deserve that. Super grateful for this education from Julie and Babette! Target and Starbucks have partnered to create an exclusive frozen peppermint hot chocolate available only at Starbucks cafes inside Target stores nationwide. This episode, Sponsored A&M Consumer and Retail Group, Mirakl, Ocampo Capital, Infios, and Quorso, explores why this seemingly small move could signal Target's merchandising mojo is returning. Chris loves this idea, calling it "smart merchandising that leverages a true differentiation point." Target Circle 360 members get 24-hour early access. While the impact may be small potatoes compared to Target's larger challenges, it's exactly the kind of creative thinking Target used to do well. Anne highlights an additional experience: select Target stores are featuring weekend hot cocoa bars where kids can customize drinks creating memories and driving foot traffic. Both hosts wonder if this could become Target's next "pumpkin spice latte" moment. Producer Ella agrees this is brilliant... adding a Starbucks drink to her hand means even longer browsing time in Target. I hope you love this conversation with Vince Aiello as much as I do! I found Vince by chance on Instagram - or maybe he found me? I forget. But I love his business Fire and Foraging, and we struck up a conversation and I invited him to talk on the podcast, and I'm SO glad I did! Vince is a nature guide in Wisconsin, and is a real pro! I learned so much - he talked about fire adaptive species and fire ecology; we talked about invasive EDIBLE plants to help plants thrive, and how humans share 80% of DNA with trees (did you know that? I sure didn't). Some of the species we discussed are dandelion, of course - how every part of the plant is beneficial, also Dames rocket and Queen Anne's Lace. Speaking of edible plants, do you recognize the mushroom on this episode's art?I also learned from Vince that there's a Mid West Wild Food conference, and that he's worked with Alexis Nikole (The Black Forager on Instagram - she's so great!) a few times!Vince says "You are nature," and his goal is for people to connect with their local environment. And he's doing that - one nature walk at a time.Vince's website is here: https://www.fireandforaging.com/Here's his Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/woods_treker/He is also a writer - here's an article of his: https://driftlessareamag.com/unicdn/2022/04/04/driftless-the-beautifully-unglaciated-area/**(the mushroom is Chicken of the Woods!)Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I loved learning about Kimberly Haley Coleman and Globe Aware- an award winning short term volunteer abroad program available in 26 countries. I didn't know this was a thing, but I'm so glad it is! You can travel abroad to learn about a new place, help people and find purpose - this sounds like my kind of vacation! Tropical destinations, cooler weather, far away, or closerby, there's something for everyone. Kimberly says they can teach the kills; they just need kind, willing people, to offer short term support - solo, or as a group!Kimberly previously worked in Aerospace, and several High-level tech jobs - we talked a little bit about people sending their lost loved ones' ashes to space to be released when she mentioned it. This isn't quite as far off from her previous careers as it might sound, but I'll let Kimberly talk about that in the episode. When I asked Kimberly what message she'd like you to remember from this conversation, she said this: "It is inspiring and meaningful to engage in thoughtful service abroad" Kimberly has been working in the international field since 1990, so she's got her finger on the button of what is needed; and she is committed to everyone having a meaningful experience - on both sides of the service. You can find all things GlobeAware here: https://www.globeaware.org/They're on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/globeaware/?hl=enAnd Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/globeawareYou can see what these intentional vacations are like on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GlobeAwareSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Good stories told badly as we take bickering to the level of an Olympic sport, and get deep into the true nature of crockery with the truly ying and yang of Kyoto jazz joints.
This conversation with CEO of Dip HairCare Kate Assaraf was so fun for me, because 1: it's Dip shampoo bars, and if you've listened to the podcast for a while, you've heard me talk about shampoo bars, and 2: we're talking about an exciting collab with Kate/Dip and GoGo Refill, my refill store back in Maine that I love. They've done a few collabs together, but this November 13, Kate is debuting GoGo Refill's very own exclusive shampoo bar scent, and they'll both be at the South Portland GoGo Refill store to celebrate!Kate's big message is to shop local - especially with the holidays coming up, but in general, consider shopping small and local when we can. Nobody is perfect, but we can try to be support local when it's possible, and keep the currency circulating locally - it also creates a relationship...We talked about Kate's product ingredients, and one of her secrets she's keeping to herself, but another is that she has 20+ years in the beauty industry, and she uses some of the highest quality, science-backed ingredients in the most expensive shampoos - so you're not missing out by using a shampoo bar!Dip has been awarded best hair care and doing good for the planet AND has been recognized as an Oprah favorite! Please don't forget to go to GoGo Refill in S Portland, ME on November 13 for the unveiling of Dip's exclusive shampoo bar scent Coastal Maine Pine!Find Dip headquarters here: https://dipalready.com/Dip's Instagram page is here to follow : https://www.instagram.com/dipalready/Wherever you're on socials, look up Dipalready .We talked about my fave refill store, GoGo Refill- shop sustainable products here: https://www.gogorefill.com/We also talked a little bit about Guster, and the program that Adam co-founded to bring water refill to concerts - here's more about the program https://reverb.org/artist/guster/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I loved learning about Lindsey Turnbull's life in activism! I did an episode with Laura Marston of GoGo Refill way back in episode 10, I think... Anyway, it's been a while since we've talked about the cool things about refilleries. Lindsey is the owner of From Here To Home Essentials, a really cool home based refillery in Maryland and Washington DC - and she offers DELIVERY for busy folks, even! Like Laura of GoGo Refill, Lindsey is more than a shop owner - she's an educator and activist; always a "crunchy granola treehugger" are her words... Have you been to a refillery? I think they're the most fun place to try new things and get as much of something as I want - or just a sample to try something new! From Here to Home Essentials offers shipping for non-liquid items. In 2019 she applied for a 3 day boating adventure to research litter in the ocean and was surprised to be accepted, and was also surprised at what she took away from just 3 days on a boat, and that experience launched her into From Here to Home Essentials.Lindsey is very passionate about recycling - and recycling properly, so that it's effective, and she has a lot to say about plastics - buckle up! It's important to know... We talk about recycling rates, plastic types and what we can do to help correct the recycling situation. You can find Lindsey ad her shop here: https://www.fromheretohomeessentials.com/And on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/fromheretohomeessentials/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I learned so much speaking with Kelsey Green about digital minimalism! I've heard about more and more people removing themselves from social media, and the thought seems overwhelming at times, but at the same time knowing there's some addiction (where's my phone? I need my phone handy! What if someone can't reach me? Have you had any of those thoughts?), and we've probably all heard the phrase "loneliness epidemic," right? I've been very cureious about it--In comes Kelsey L Green - she works at the intersection of community, strategy, and accountability, helping people stop stalling and start building lives that truly light them up. She offers a free 24 hour technology free challenge twice a month - which is a great test of our focus - both of how much we're focused on technology, and how much focus on life we can have without it. When we talked, I hadn't done the challenge yet, but I've since done it - I admit I did probably 98% (I talked to my sister on the phone), but otherwise, I made it!Here's more info on the 24 hour screen free challenge here: https://www.kelseylgreen.com/screen-free-sunday-challengesShe talks a lot about Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism book - she has been studying this to grow her own practice - look for that wherever you buy/find books.Kelsey hosts an accountability mastermind called Summit in Six - here's a link to info on that - Summit in Six is a high-accountability mastermind for women creators and entrepreneurs who are done circling their ideas and are ready to make their move.Find all things Kelsey here: https://www.kelseylgreen.com/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) What began on a cold November night with a simple cup of hot chocolate and some open ears grew into a vibrant, inclusive space where young people, often misunderstood by schools and society, found a place to be themselves. In this episode of Mind the Kids, ‘Home fae Home: Hot Chocolate Helping Trauma' we step into the heart of a community transformed by compassion, creativity, and co-design. Join host Mark Tebbs as he meets the passionate team on a remarkable project; Charis Robertson, Anne McKechnie, Gary Kennedy, and Lindsey McIntosh—experts from diverse backgrounds including community development, clinical psychology, architecture, and design. Hear how the Hot Chocolate Trust in Dundee — a grassroots organisation that for over 25 years has offered refuge and belonging to young people often on the margins. Through a remarkable collaboration between youth workers, trauma-informed psychologists, architects, and designers, this episode explores an inspiring journey of transforming a historic church building into a sanctuary designed by the young people themselves. Using innovative and playful methods, the team engaged these youths in the co-creation process, listening deeply to their stories, needs, and visions to shape a space that truly feels like their own. Hear the stories of small moments that sparked big change — from impromptu pancake parties to spray paint workshops — and discover how trauma-informed practice goes beyond therapy to embrace community, trust, and empowerment. This is about creating safe spaces that honour identity, choice, and belonging, where healing happens naturally through connection and creativity. Whether you're a youth worker, mental health professional, designer, or simply someone who believes in the power of community, this episode offers a deeply human perspective on how to listen, engage, and build environments that help young people not just survive, but thrive. Y'all, I'm feeling like a million bucks sharing this conversation with you that I got to have with Amanda Leland, Executive Director of the Environmental Defense Fund... I'm still pinching myself! Amanda became a member of the EDF when she was 13, so she's been training to be Executive Director for a few years!Amanda just published Sea Change: Unlikely Allies and a Success Story of Oceanic Proportions, with James Workman - it published September 30! It tells the story of how fishermen, scientists, and environmentalists set aside their distrust and their differences to forge an unlikely alliance to help solve the overfishing crisis in our oceans. It was exciting to hear her talk about it!Amanda has Maine ties, growing up in Massachusetts and visiting every summer. She has a Masters Degree in Marine Biology from UMaine, and has a very different Maine experience than I've had, so you know I loved hearing about it... She also worked as a marine mammal zookeeper!I asked Amanda to talk about what EDF does, too: they are a global nonprofit organization tackling climate change — the greatest challenge of our time. Their bold, game-changing solutions are people centered. Their goals are stabilizing the climate, strengthening people and nature's ability to thrive, and supporting peoples' health - very important work!Learn more about EDF here: https://www.edf.org/You can learn more about Sea Change here: https://prbythebook.com/experts/james-workman-and-amanda-leland/EDF on Instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/environmental_defense_fundAmanda's own Instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/avleland/On Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/EnvDefenseFundTikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@envdefensefundSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Y'all, in over 3 years, I can't remember doing a full episode on the OCEAN! Until now - Andrew Lewin is a total ocean geek - in the best way! He grew up far from the ocean, but watched Jacques Cousteau shows and was OBSESSED. He has a Masters in Marine Biology, and hosts the How To Protect the Ocean podcast and co hosts the Beyond Jaws podcast. How To Protect the Ocean has over 1800 episodes! He was recording 5 episodes a week for a bit; now it's only 3 a week (plus a job)... and he's hosted the podcast for 10 years! His podcast topic is ocean conservation, and the reasons and ways we can protect the ocean.Andrew's message he hopes you'll keep with you: "You can live for a better ocean by learning about the ocean and making small changes in your lifestyle to protect the planet." We talked about recycling and mindfulness, so many things, really - My favorite takeaway from this conversation, besides 1800 episodes and recording 3 days/week - Andrew said "conservation is collaboration," and I was all done - that made me think, and it felt like a mic drop for me. Think about that for a moment - what does that phrase mean to you? Let me know, please - I'd love to hear from you!Look for Andrew Lewin's awesome podcast How To Protect the Ocean here: https://www.speakupforblue.com/podcastHe's on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lewinandrew/You can find him on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/howtoprotecttheocean/He's on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@speakupforblueSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I learned a lot about wardrobe management in this conversation with Julia Dietmar! I had a totally different idea of what Open Wardrobe was going into this convo, but she set me straight. There are so many ways to use Open Wardrobe, developed by Julia. Her goal is to cut down on overconsumption of clothes by digitizing, which is very cool! you have your entire wardrobe handy, so when you go shopping, you already know you have 4 white tops and 3 pair of black pants, etc. OR you can pull up your wardrobe if you're shopping to see how a new red top would fit in - how many combos you can make, to make it feel worthwhile... There's also an option to get your fave clothing items REPAIRED!The last company Julia worked with is called ThredUp; it's an online consignment and thrift store where you can buy and sell high-quality secondhand clothes. But she started in software programming, and just always loved fashion, so she's combined the two, which is brilliant! Julia's aim with Open Wardrobe is to empower fashion consumers with mindful dressing, and I'm here for that!Julia is offering a 30% discount for my listeners when you set up an account with Open Wardrobe - just enter code GroundedYou can find Julia and Open Wardrobe here: https://www.openwardrobe.co/Julia's also on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/openwardrobeofficial/And on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/openwardrobeofficial/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Lights, cameras, color action! This week on Wisdom from the Wardrobe, we kick things off Hollywood-style with a red carpet rundown of the 2025 Emmy Awards, who wore what, which looks wowed, and the standout style moments that had our stylist team talking. From fashion hits to near misses, our “In the News” segment proves that awards season always delivers plenty of wardrobe wisdom. Then, we trade sequins for swatches and dive headfirst into the Pantone Color Institute's Fall/Winter 2025/2026 palette. Think zesty Lemon Grass, cozy Hot Chocolate, sultry Damson, fiery Poppy Red, and dreamy Lyons Blue plus the seasonless classics like French Roast and Mauve Wine. According to Pantone, these shades strike the perfect balance between casual ease and subtle elegance. But did our team agree? Was the palette muted… or more? Tune in as we unpack the palette's “poetic nuance,” debate which colors bring drama vs. snooze factor, and share stylist approved tips on what unexpected hues to pair them with. Whether you're plotting a fall wardrobe refresh, styling for impact, or just love geeking out on fashion forecasts, this episode is your colorful guide to autumn/winter style trends. Happy Styling.
Oh my goodness, this conversation with Megha Patil made me wish I had a young girl in my family! Megha describes Happy Lilliput as "Exquisite Celebration Attire" - can you just picture that? Megha said growing up in India birthdays are a BIG DEAL - like sometimes thousands of guests to celebrate you, and very fancy clothes. She was fascinated by fashion; she went to design school, and was frustrated by the waste that she saw, so she decided to design her own patterns and clothes. And boy oh boy, has she made an impact! I really encourage you to check out my Social media post from September 22, or follow her website link below - I'll be sharing a few photos of Megha's team in India, and I snagged a photo from her website so you can see one of the incredible dresses they make. She is so proud of her team, and the pride they all have in the work they do. Happy Lilliput isn't just about sustainable Celebration Attire, but also supporting the super skilled folks in her home country, and the difference her business makes in their lives. Megha talks about how women are encouraged to stay home in India, and how flexible work schedules are, so that people are able to take care of their lives AND bring some money home and help to support their family, and also how big of an impact having some work has had on the team and their families.I just loved learning about this process, and all the things that Megha is up to. This conversation with Ali Waks Adams was soul feeding for me- I love talking to people who are passionate about helping to solve food insecurity, and Ali is on the board of Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program (MPHCC) in my hometown of Brunswick, Maine, and she's sharing some of the things that they're doing that have been working to feed the people of Maine. (I said Maine, not just Brunswick - Ali says they feed people from 14 out of the 16 counties in Maine!) We talked a little about the people who volunteer (over 500!) and the people receiving from MCHPP as well. We both cried a little...MCHPP opened in 1983, and has grown in strides every year; to serving 1.2 MILLION meals in 2024, and now have a professional community kitchen to offer to local businesses and a 2nd building to hold donated food, just acquired 2-3 years ago. MCHPP receives extra foods from several farmers, and Growing to Give, where I volunteered, offering their clients fresh, healthy food to add to the shelf-stable foods from grocery stores. I've delivered several times from some of the roles I've held through work and volunteering. MCHPP hosts regular fundraisers - there's an exciting one coming up on September 24th that's put on by local chefs and with donated food that's organized by Ali! Ali moved to Brunswick from NYC and Philadelphia, and in order to meet her neighbors, she started volunteering at MCHPP, and fell in love with the people she served. She is a professional private chef; her business is called Balaboosta, and she has sure made a name for herself! Balaboosta's tagline is "a boutique catering company in Mid Coast Maine, sometimes it's fancy, sometimes it's cozy, always delicious." She is very passionate about feeding people, and it shows in everything she does! You can learn all about MCHPP at their website: https://www.mchpp.org/MCHPP is on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/midcoasthungerpreventionprThey're on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/MidCoastHungerPreventionProgramAnd on Linkedin here: Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Keith Bearden is the CEO of Alter Eco, a sustainable chocolate company. Under his direction, Alter Eco isn't just delivering delicious chocolate and granola; it's doing so with a mission that aligns perfectly with people who are looking for better options. Keith's initiatives in regenerative farming and sustainable packaging are reaching a broad audience. Alter Eco does more than purchase from growers, they provide the plants and encourage regenerative practices, which has made a huge difference in the quality of product AND the region, as we just discussed last week with greening cities, the biodiversity makes such a difference! The trees provide some shade from the intense sun, and the lower plants keep the ground more moist for the trees - it's a beautiful symbiotic relationship where everyone benefits.Keith is very proud of the company, and talks openly about the work they do. I grabbed this from their annual Regen Report for 2024: "Regenerative agriculture has been and will continue to be a major focus for us. Y'all, I hope you love this conversation with Joshua Harrison as much as I did - I was glued to what he was saying! As we talked in the middle of a hot hot summer afternoon, his plan is to cool our paved, blazing hot cities, in the simplest of ways. He has decades of research and experience to prove it works. Joshua started asking about solar energy in the 70s (incredible story!), and never stopped! He has a center for education (the Center for Force Majeure) and is Co-Founder of a retail business (Leaf Island). He is based in NYC, and has installed several green roofs already, with great success. I just love this so much - utilizing the flat roofs in the city; growing plants or food, lowering heating and cooling costs AND bringing the neighborhood temperatures down? That sounds like a no-brainer to me - everyone wins!I grabbed this from Joshua's website about the Center for Force Majeure: "The Center for the Study of the Force Majeure brings together artists and scientists to design ecosystem-adaptation projects in critical regions around the world to respond to climate change." I think that's so beautiful!Joshua's center website to learn more: https://www.centerforforcemajeure.org/And Leaf Island Green Roof Project: https://leafisland.org/Joshua is also on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/josh-harrison-b303996/ypFyih2p4g7ECJgC7PLlSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I got to meet Patrick Kelly this past January at Podfest, and we talked about doing this episode then - timing was just weird, but I think maybe it was just meant to happen now... Pat is the host of The Produce Industry Podcast and also runs The Produce Industry Network, on the side of his actual produce business and family life... I've said so many times that we should know where our food comes from, and I've talked about my jam business, and how I picked my own berries to feel better about the fruit I was using, and I'm so glad to have had the chance to get from the industry that I was doing things the hard way (that's SO me). I learned so much from this conversation - Pat has been working in this industry for 25 years, and before that, he heard all about it from his dad, so he KNOWS. He set me straight on a couple of things, and gave a good overview of what the industry is really like, and it is wild! It takes a real passion and energy to work in an unpreserved food world - always hustling to make sure food isn't wasted, and I'm glad that Pat is there! The Produce Industry Podcast is exactly what it sounds like - all things produce, which, for me, at least, is fascinating. And the network puts out 5 episodes each week, so there's something for everyone. I just finished listening to their segment on The Lewellings, which takes place in the early 1800s and involves so much US history - they had the first commercial nursery in Iowa! You'll have to listen to his podcast to hear more--You can find The Produce Industry Podcast wherever you listen to or watch podcasts, or at https://app.theproduceindustrypodcast.com/ You can find Pat on Linkedin hereOr on Instagram hereSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Recorded on a Monday at the Palm Street Studio. Everyone is getting pickled with the pickled vodka. JTK's wedding is coming up soon and we joke around a bunch and make plans. Alternative energy is shady as hell and what is truly the motivation? We finally get to the top 5, which is favorite concession stand items at sports events. The podcast goes off the rails and the Pirate Water also kicks in. Booths in restaurants are the worst, especially for larger people. Ban the fixed booth! Make good choices!
MaryEllen Lundy has thought of everything, it seems, with An Eco-Organized Approach downsizing! It's inspiring to hear her talk about how circular her system is, from cleaning out to rehoming belongings, and everything in between. She shares a few stories that show just how much thought and care goes into her projects, which makes sense, considering she is entering someone's home and personal space, and helping them let go of things they've held tight to- it takes a very special personality to handle the deep emotional ties that some folks have to their belongings (I'm one of those people - things hold memories for me because my brain doesn't recall well without help), and gently assisting with the removal, or cleanout. MaryEllen has already put a ton of thought into a project before removing anything from the home, like what types of items can be fixed up. or repurposed, donated to a school, community program or a retirement home, or as an absolute last option is landfill. She works so hard to not have landfill be that optionWhen I asked MaryEllen about a message she hopes you'll remember, she said this: "Did you know every item in your home, in your life really…has its own lifetime? Its own beginning, middle, and - thanks to an Eco Organized Approach, end."You can find all things MaryEllen and An Eco-Organized Approach here: https://anecoorganizedapproach.com/She's on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/anecoorganizedapproach/And on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/AnEcoOrganizedApproachSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Maxx Cumby McGee has been planning the Gott Street Blues clothing brand since the 90s when she was one of a very few women in the construction world - life just delayed it. Maxx's story is both hillarious and eye opening; how she started in modeling at 19, and got into construction by making friends with the CEO of Anheuser-Busch, and showing up on her first day with a pink toolbox and men's work clothes that nearly got her injured because there were no women's work clothes. This is a longer episode, but I'll bet it goes by quicker than you expect, because Maxx is very entertaining, and this story about fashion for the workplace is fascinating! If you asked Maxx what GottStreet Blues is about, she would say,"Clothing for women doing physical labor, clothing that was made with women in mind, getting past vanity sizing, meeting comfort with functionality and fit for women specifically." We talk about this a lot because it's been a real issue for her at work, and it affects others today, as more women are entering the trades for work. GottStreet Blues is a sustainable clothing company for women who work in the trades - or women who have trouble finding clothes that really fit (raising my hand). Maxx's message she wants you to remember: "Trust yourself, you can do anything, anytime, at any age." I had a great time talking with Bridget Shirvell about her new book Parenting in a Climate Crisis; A Handbook for Turning Fear into Action - I may have gotten a little excited when she was talking about the contents of the book, knowing there was a chapter about activism... Bridget is a freelance writer, and has done pieces for Martha Stewart and PBS, Conde Nast and New York Times, and others about food, travel and the environment. Having her own young child inspired her to write the book, to prepare young people to take on the world that we leave, by teaching the love of nature. From her website: "In this urgent parenting guide, learn how to navigate the uncertainty of the climate crisis and keep your kids informed, accountable, and hopeful–with simple actions you can take as a family to help the earth.Kids today are experiencing the climate crisis firsthand. Camp canceled because of wildfire smoke. Favorite beaches closed due to erosion. Recess held indoors due to extreme heat. How do parents help their children make sense of it all? And how can we keep our kids (and ourselves) from despair?"You can find all of Bridget's incredible work (and her book!) at her website here: https://breeshirvell.com/She's also on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/breeshirvellSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) You may be thinking "what makes Kurt Avery have a heart of gold?" You'll have to listen to this conversation, because it's hard to put into words how quietly wonderful Kurt is. And if you're not wondering that, then let's get to the quiet part-Kurt is the CEO of Sawyer Products, and if you do any outdoor activities, you're familiar with the brand; they make water filters for your water bottles, sunscreen and first aid products for hiking and camping. They are THE name for the most effective products. But did you know that Kurt and Sawyer Products has provided water filters for the military stationed abroad? And that they are donating THOUSANDS of water filters to countries that have had high illness rates due to lack of clean water, and to places that have experienced natural disasters? Kurt also wrote a book called Sawyer Think; How A Small Company Disrupts Markets and Changes the World, and I haven't read it yet, but I feel pretty confident that it will only confirm what I've heard from him about his charity work.I've never really been a camper or hiker, but I'll definitely be sure to support Kurt and Sawyer Products any way I can. This week's episode exemplifies the difference between Neil and Dave.Neil reads the British Journal of Psychology to research his incredible facts. Dave reads the paper in which he got his fish and chips.Nevertheless, Dave‘s fishy facts will wow you but not as much as the story of the Irish man who named a fruit and invented hot chocolate. Neil reveals how the price of a bottle of Coca-Cola remained the same for more than 70 years and greatly excited Dave with his talk of 40-foot container standardisation. Add to this the sexual tension of a seed travelling through an armadillo's alimentary canal and you've got yourself an episode. To listen to Dave on the radio check outhttps://www.todayfm.com/shows/dave-moore-1499732 To see Neil on his current tour check outhttps://www.neildelamere.com/britain-achilles-neil-tour-datesPresented and Produced by Neil Delamere and Dave MooreEdited by Nicky RyanMusic by Dave MooreArtwork by Ray McDonnell Hosted on Acast. I was thrilled to get to talk to Jeremiah Jancik, because I've ALWAYS got questions about energy. Maybe too many? Jeremiah is an Energy Consultant, and we're talking about installing solar panels, heat pumps, insulation and doing energy audits - all things home efficiency - which he has decades of experience in. In his 12 year career he's performed over 4000 energy assessments! Now he's focusing on training new people and consulting, and doing virtual solar inspections. He wants to help you learn how to save energy in your home while staying comfortable, and lowering your carbon footprint at the same time. Jeremiah also talks a little bit about the book he wrote during the pandemic titled After Oil 2047. I didn't know 2047 is an actual deadline in the industry! You can find all things Jeremiah Jancik on his website here: https://www.jeremiahjancik.com/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Have you ever felt confused or conflicted about organic food labels? I know I've said something like if I have to choose between organic from far away and in plastic, or local, I'd choose local; and I'm sure I've had dirty looks. It's just gotten confusing. And it costs almost half as much as regular foods, so I've wondered if its really better... So this week I'm talking to Linley Dixon of The Real Organic Project, to help us (me) better understand what it all means.Linley works for The Real Organic Project, and also is the Co-Host of The Real Organic Project podcast AND is a small organic farmer, so I feel like we're in capable hands. The Real Organic Project is an extra certification that is free, once the USDA Organic certification is attained. And Linley explains that for us so well!I love Linley's stories of working into her current farm - as I'm in a similar search, I was glued to her words. The Real Organic Project website has a database of growers they work with that you can look up your area to see who's participating - that's very helpful. Her message she hopes you'll take away: "how to find good food and grow good food for yourself."Check out https://realorganicproject.org/ and the podcast with the same name to learn ALL about organic food!Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)
