I had a great time talking with Bridget Shirvell about her new book Parenting in a Climate Crisis; A Handbook for Turning Fear into Action - I may have gotten a little excited when she was talking about the contents of the book, knowing there was a chapter about activism... Bridget is a freelance writer, and has done pieces for Martha Stewart and PBS, Conde Nast and New York Times, and others about food, travel and the environment. Having her own young child inspired her to write the book, to prepare young people to take on the world that we leave, by teaching the love of nature. From her website: "In this urgent parenting guide, learn how to navigate the uncertainty of the climate crisis and keep your kids informed, accountable, and hopeful–with simple actions you can take as a family to help the earth.Kids today are experiencing the climate crisis firsthand. Camp canceled because of wildfire smoke. Favorite beaches closed due to erosion. Recess held indoors due to extreme heat. How do parents help their children make sense of it all? And how can we keep our kids (and ourselves) from despair?"You can find all of Bridget's incredible work (and her book!) at her website here: https://breeshirvell.com/She's also on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/breeshirvellSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) You may be thinking "what makes Kurt Avery have a heart of gold?" You'll have to listen to this conversation, because it's hard to put into words how quietly wonderful Kurt is. And if you're not wondering that, then let's get to the quiet part-Kurt is the CEO of Sawyer Products, and if you do any outdoor activities, you're familiar with the brand; they make water filters for your water bottles, sunscreen and first aid products for hiking and camping. They are THE name for the most effective products. But did you know that Kurt and Sawyer Products has provided water filters for the military stationed abroad? And that they are donating THOUSANDS of water filters to countries that have had high illness rates due to lack of clean water, and to places that have experienced natural disasters? Kurt also wrote a book called Sawyer Think; How A Small Company Disrupts Markets and Changes the World, and I haven't read it yet, but I feel pretty confident that it will only confirm what I've heard from him about his charity work.I've never really been a camper or hiker, but I'll definitely be sure to support Kurt and Sawyer Products any way I can. I hope you enjoy this conversation! You can find Kurt's company Sawyer Products here: https://www.sawyer.com/Their Instagram page is here: https://www.instagram.com/sawyerproducts/They're on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/people/Sawyer-Products/61563796295518/The company Linkedin page is here: https://www.linkedin.com/company/sawyer-products/posts/?feedView=allSawyer's YouTube channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/c/SawyerProducts/featuredAnd on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@sawyerproductsSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Poor old Johnnie Ray.Actually, I wonder what the heart wrenching vocal superstar of the fifties made of his starring role in the biggest selling single of 1982, thirty years after his own chart topping run? Did anyone ever ask how he felt watching the footage of his younger self in the video for Come On Eileen intertwined with Kevin's dungaree festooned Emerald Express on a London street corner. Perhaps, as he was famous for doing, he cried. I hope Mr Rowland at least sent him a thank you note. So, welcome back to 1982!Were you there in those now gone days of pop perfection? Did you dance in the ra-ra skirt to Duran Duran at the school disco? Did you shed a tear as The Jam called it a day on the new Channel Four pop weekly The Tube, even though Paul knew well(er) what the next chapter held for his newly formed council. Or perhaps the Smash Hits of over forty years ago exist for you in playlists and radio schedules discovered since. Either way, the NOW Yearbook (and Extra volume) welcomes you with a neon smile to bring together over 140 hits, memories, misses and otherwise that sum up a stellar twelve months of pop. And as 1981's steely electronic winter defrosted, a new pop was emerging. Duran, Spandau, Culture, Club, Wham!, Haircut 100 and a dazzling cast of many more were turning the colour back up on their (three channel) TV sets. Whilst the technology that gloriously gave us the new romantic sounds of 1981 was still driving the decade forward, suddenly we were taking ourselves, well, a bit less seriously. Pop was fun again as seen in the ever evolving, cheerleading extravaganza that was Top of The Pops. The charts were indeed alive to the possibilities of much more. Trevor Horn's hit production machine was digitising our delights with the sounds of ABC, Dollar and even the Appalachian hip-hop of Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals. Seventies survivors such as Hot Chocolate, Roxy Music, ABBA, Marvin Gaye and others were upping their game and embracing - gasp - synthesisers! And you know what, it was sounding and looking (thanks to glossy videos) AMAZING.And across the pond in the US of A? Well, we were importing them our own brand of fabulous pop and they were sending us ROCK in the form of Steve Miller, Survivor and J Geils - but even that was, well, shiny and new. What was indeed going on?To quote Smash Hits (snip!) editor David Hepworth, there were, he said, “no patterns” to pop in 1982. Join chief editor of electrictyclub.co.uk Chi Ming Lai and author of 1984: The Year Pop Went Queer Ian Wade as we dive back into a fascinating twelve months of pop as chronicled in the NOW Yearbook 1982. Amongst many other things, discover which star(s) were upsetting the Musician's Union, find out more about the language of Smash Hits and how we need it more than ever, why old was the new New, learn about the NEXT BIG genre that you need in your life (Elegant Futurism!), why Germany was giving us EVERYTHING, and discover what Haysi Fantaysee were really up to on TOTP (if you dare!).The 1982 Yearbook - Hi Fidelity indeed! Have you ever felt confused or conflicted about organic food labels? I know I've said something like if I have to choose between organic from far away and in plastic, or local, I'd choose local; and I'm sure I've had dirty looks. It's just gotten confusing. And it costs almost half as much as regular foods, so I've wondered if its really better... So this week I'm talking to Linley Dixon of The Real Organic Project, to help us (me) better understand what it all means.Linley works for The Real Organic Project, and also is the Co-Host of The Real Organic Project podcast AND is a small organic farmer, so I feel like we're in capable hands. The Real Organic Project is an extra certification that is free, once the USDA Organic certification is attained. And Linley explains that for us so well!I love Linley's stories of working into her current farm - as I'm in a similar search, I was glued to her words. The Real Organic Project website has a database of growers they work with that you can look up your area to see who's participating - that's very helpful. Her message she hopes you'll take away: "how to find good food and grow good food for yourself."Check out https://realorganicproject.org/ and the podcast with the same name to learn ALL about organic food!Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Lauren Connolly is a person I relate to so much. She had me as a guest on her podcast Wildly Unplug, because we found out that we both recharge by being outside. Lauren has a very personal story about burnout, and how turning to nature brought her the fulfillment she was needing. She is an artist; she paints and is a photographer, a podcaster, and now she's added Author to the list of accomplishments! Her book is called Wildly Unplug, just like the podcast. She says about her book: "Wildly Unplug — A Creative Guide to Reconnecting with Nature, which offers inspiration, journaling prompts, and simple ways to unplug from the digital world and reconnect with what truly matters. It's a journey of overcoming burnout by reconnecting with nature through art, nature journaling, and conservation work. Be Your Own Shaman is the title of Jane Barlow Christensen's book she co-authored with her son, teaching people how to identify, harvest and use the medicinal plants found all around us. It is beautiful, hard cover book, full of pictures to make identifying as easy as possible.Jane talks about how her own father taught her and her siblings to recognize and appreciate the plants that are often already available in our yards to help support the human body. She tells a story about riding in the car with the family, and her dad pulling the car over and getting everyone out of the vehicle to show them a plant on the side of the road - I have the best vision of this in my head!I'm so interested in all herbalist work, and it's exciting to learn about the medicinal plants in our own yard growing wild, and the ones that are considered "weeds" by many. Jane's book talks about the best time to harvest and best ways to use the plants, which is super interesting! I encourage anyone who is even remotely interested in medicinal/helpful plants, to check out this book and episode - Jane has studied plants her entire life, and has so much wisdom to share. You can find Jane's website here; there's also an online catalog of herbal supports and supplements: https://barlowherbal.com/She's on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/barlowherbal/She's also on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/barlowherbal/On Thursdays Jane does a special segment on Youtube, but has a TON of helpful stuff here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtq9uAZnU8ay7y2e8Xl2mGQYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) She is just so inspiring when she talks about all things eco-friendly! First The Good Spark Shop, where she curated the best products around; checking ingredients and labels for you, so there's no questioning quality and origin. And now with travel essentials as EverFar; this is actually a line that she created - and making it a legit brand (launching in just a couple weeks)! Lisa is also organizing a group of like-minded folks to meet up and talk about what we can do to help the climate situation we're in. If you're interested in the group, you can find info about it and join on the website easily."Intentional, Eco-conscious choices create a ripple effect of goodness." "It's too easy to get overwhelmed - too much information, too many "shiny object" vying for our attention (and our dollars). Change starts with small. Change starts with where you are NOW, move slowly and at your own pace to where you want to be."These are both her quotes. I had so much fun, and learned a ton from this conversation with Greg Peterson of the Great American Seed Up and the Urban Farm Podcast! If you've been listening for a while, you know that podcasters are great conversationalists, and can be very entertaining - Greg is no exception! Greg's podcast has about 900 (nine hundred!) episodes since the end of 2015!Greg has been on a mission since he was 15 years old to figure out how to fix the broken food system, and has been running the Great American Seed Up out of Arizona for several years; kind of like a buffet for seeds - thousands of people attend in person each year, to stock up on seeds. He says seeds are expensive to buy when you buy from a store, mostly because of the pretty packaging, so they simplify it, and you can buy in bulk. *You can also mail order seeds, FYI* In my head, I've been trying to imagine what the event looks like, to have bulk seeds for thousands of shoppers...The first soundbite I posted to promote this episode gave me chills - he said this: "I am the person on the planet responsible for transforming our global food system." WOW! And this is the message he hopes you will take away from this conversation: "The most important thing that we can be doing right now is figuring out where our food comes from and how to grow our own. And that starts with having seeds and knowledge to grow food." He also says that 20% of our gardens should include pollinator-friendly plants - that's a great piece to start with! You can find all things Greg Peterson at https://www.urbanfarm.org/ and https://greatamericanseedup.org/They're also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/urbanfarmu?igsh=MXZpNzhmbzdrd3Nndg%3D%3DYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) When Sam Baker approached me about talking about the product he represents, worm casting tea, and also mentioned that WiggleBrew has tested and discovered that earthworms can actually "EAT PLASTIC," it was a no-brainer- I couldn't wait to hear more about that! As a big fan of worm compost (vermicompost), I was very excited to promote the crap (pun intended) out of WiggleBrew, and Sam didn't disappoint. He was talking to me from an Agriculture conference in Chicago, where he presented WiggleBrew, and mentioned he felt over dressed, because he wore a business suit, and the others were dressed more comfortably. But I hope the folks there really heard him like I did- "A team of recent college grads is making a fertilizer from worm poop that row crop farmers are using instead of the toxic stuff. Along the way, they discovered that earthworm microbes can also be used to break down plastic!"This feels like game changing information to me - I mean, the real game changer would be less plastic being produced, of course, but to have earthworms eat it, and then produce fertilizer?? WHOA--From WriggleBrew's website: "it's not all poop jokes and worms over here- there's a more serious reason we're doing this all- more serious than saving habitats. Malnutrition that stems from mineral fertilizer use on crops makes up about 4% of child deaths around the world right now. Mineral fertilizers, like a certain TikTok famous houseplant fertilizer, does not let plants uptake (eat) the micronutrients that we humans need from our food: like zinc, iron, and magnesium. Makes the plants more susceptible to disease too."Check out WriggleBrew's website: https://www.wrigglebrew.com/Find them on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wrigglebrew/and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PRAGWriggleBrewYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPzJEBVwHWJzbmc15QN5TcQand on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@wrigglebrew_officialYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I had a whole different idea of where this conversation would go with Geeta Sidhu-Robb, and I am thrilled to have been wrong about that! I was so happily surprised at the direction, talking about taking your power back, and how menopause is a GIFT to women, because for possibly the first time in our lives, we are forced to put our own needs first - and that was definitely not a thought I had about menopause...Not too long ago Geeta was a newly divorced mom of 3, homeless without a solid plan. Today she is the Founder of WCorp, helping businesses worldwide to certify as supportive to women in many aspects, and has now spoken at the United Nations TWICE and won an award as a thought leader and empowerment coach!Geeta also hosts a podcast called Activate Yourself, and it's nice to have her voice more available to keep in the empowered frame of mind. After speaking with Dr Marlene Siegel, more than ever, I want to clone her and help every caring pet parent get the best possible health care for their fur and feathered babies. If you're a pet parent like me, you've probably wondered from time to time if you're giving the best care to your pet. Dr Siegel will set things straight, from her 40 years of experience studying and treating different animals, and heartbreaking and heart warming stories. Dr Siegel always knew she would work with animals, but didn't expect what happened when her daughter was young on her horse to change her veterinary practice forever. Her business (she sells food and supplements because it may be hard for some of us depending on where we live) is called EvoLove Adventures, and you can find all her offerings and education on her website below.Dr Siegel grows her own food forest to offer the healthiest, cleanest, most nutritionally dense foods to her own family - animals included, and explains what she's growing, and why we should be, too. She talks about the chemicals and contaminants in our food and WATER that we take in, and the virtually 100% cancer rates as well as other health issues in pets, and how we can avoid the heartbreak with her 6 Keys to Health and Healing Pets Naturally (free E Book available on the website!) and her Empowered Pet Parents Course. The message she wants people to take from this: "There is a proven path to healing. The Empowered Pet Parent Course gives you the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take back control of your pet's health.  Address the Root Cause, Not Just Symptoms. Support detoxification. Reduce inflammation. I loved meeting Brittany Hansen so much; it was such a gift spending time with her because she is a very well-rounded person! Brittany lives in Idaho with her spouse and children on 1/3 acre, and she is homesteading - or as she calls it Micro-homesteading, but it is totally effective! And some cool tips for city folks were shared, because she is using every inch of space, and has created a sharing community where she is, so she can access locally grown or made items, and offer some in return. We get to learn about raising QUAIL! I've heard of quail here and there, but have I actually seen a quail? Nope. Tasted their eggs? Nope again. Brittany's kids have an allergy to chicken eggs, and learned that quail eggs can be a good option, so she is raising her own quail to feed her family! (Check out my promo posts for this episode, because Brittany shared pictures with me!) I've been told since talking with her that quail might be a way around zoning with chickens, too...Brittany is immersed in the sustainability world - She is Co-Owner of Viiision, which, my understanding, is like a PR for companies to share their transparency of sustainability progress so that customers will see them to support them (Brittany, please correct me if I'm too far off!).AND, since we talked, she has started her own podcast, called "Who's Going to Fix This?" Talking about world issues, and who is taking the steps to make change happen. Brilliant! Only a couple of episodes in, and I'm hooked!Brittany's message she wants you to remember from our conversation: "If we want to change the world we have to lead with that change. If you want more sustainability adopt little changes that interweave that into your life until it becomes a part of you." Y'all, this is very personal, and I'm so happy to have some of my closest friends join me to chat up our special place, Growing to Give. Growing to Give is a climate-friendly, volunteer-driven, nonprofit farming operation in Brunswick, Maine, that grows certified-organic vegetables for donation. I invited my friends Karin Sorensen, Robin Knight and Mary Aveno to help me to chat up our favorite non-profit where we all had the honor of helping to grow organic produce to donate to local food pantries to offer some highly nutritious produce to our less food secure neighbors. We all met there, and became fast friends, and more like family in the same purpose. We missed each other when we were absent, and celebrated every day we were together, and we did some great work (they still do, but Karin and I moved away), and have helped to grow and donate over 100,000 lbs of food! There are several other volunteers at Growing to Give - too many to gather for an episode and everyone get a word in, but that's how the magic happens.Growing to Give began as a dream of property owners Patty Carton and John Newlin in 2015, and 2017 was the first year officially growing, and Robin and I were the first 2 volunteers with Theda, the OG Farm Manager, with 1 Rimol greenhouse, and now it's a well-oiled machine of hundreds of volunteers annually, several hoop houses for growing, as well as farm skills workshops, elderberry workshops, and an annual Farmyard Jam fundraiser. I have to say, I was so impressed with myself for getting through this conversation with sensation in my toes - I'm a total baby talking about blood and stuff, and I expected to have a hard time with it, but I was too interested to get queasy, I guess. Even the 2nd time listening to edit, it was still so fascinating! Feeling very lucky that Melissa Meadow crossed my Instagram feed. This opened my eyes to a ton of new information that's available.Melissa Meadow started her career early, and has been in the funeral home business since she was very young, evolved into being a mortician, and has tons of wisdom to share that we might not know about. I had only heard the phrase green burial in the last few months - let alone water cremation and others... AND I thought that cremation was more environmentally friendly than burying a whole body, because it took up more space - boy was I wrong about that! This is why I wanted to have Melissa on the podcast; in her words: "There are options that are better for the environment and align with those wanting transparency and options." I love that she shared so many new options! Have you already made plans for when you die? I had when my mom passed away, but that was in Maine, where I don't live anymore, so I have to plan again- and now I have more information to make a more informed decision. It may sound morbid, but it's an important topic, I think. The more you have planned out, the less traumatic your death will be - speaking from some experience...I hope you take some good info away from this conversation - I know I did!You can find Melissa at her website https://www.themodernmortician.com/ (there are so many helpful resources here!)Her Instagram page, where I found her, is both fascinating and entertaining: https://www.instagram.com/the_modern_morticianShe's also on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@the_modern_morticianAnd lastly on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/@The_Modern_MorticianYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at https://www.janebolduc.com/Podcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and check out her awesome art projects. He talks about ways that adding native plants will improve the land, and bring in beneficial insects and birds, and other critters, and the magnitude of those positive changes. All from just planting a few native plants! A small effort for huge and lasting results! He also talks about the personal project he's working on, Tierra Linda Park, that he's experimenting and bringing back to life using natives, and the results already are truly awesome!Christopher's own words of what he wants you to take away from this conversation from his guest form: "The solutions to many of our big problems are simple and fast in the scheme of things. Dave and Milt jump back to February 21, 1976, to explore the Billboard Top 10 hits. The duo analyzes songs ranging from ELO's 'Evil Woman' and the Eagles' 'Take It to the Limit' to disco classics like Donna Summer's 'Love to Love You Baby' and Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing.' They introduce a playful segment featuring AI-generated Milt as a quizmaster. Songs are substituted, moments from TV and film are highlighted, and nostalgic stories are shared, all culminating in Paul Simon's classic '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover' being crowned the top hit of the week.   Topics   01:14 Listener Shoutouts and Feedback 06:48 Spotify Troubles and Legal Issues 08:33 Time Travel to February 21st, 1976 21:08 Top 10 Songs Countdown Begins 41:51 Neil Sedaka's Unique Chart History 42:55 Debating the Song's Intro 43:19 Neil Sedaka's Career Resurgence 44:29 Exploring Other Chart Oddities 45:07 Nirvana's Unplugged and Other Remakes 47:03 Neil Sedaka's Kids Songs 48:10 Parody Songs and Phone Industry 50:50 Eric Carmen's All By Myself 58:26 Barry Manilow's I Write the Songs 01:04:53 AI and Music Trivia Challenge 01:16:07 The Miracles' Disco Hit 01:22:46 The Groove and Horniness Vibes Continue 01:23:34 Germany and TV Show Recommendations 01:24:29 Donna Summer's Breakthrough 01:24:59 The Extended Dance Remix Revolution 01:25:38 The Controversy and Impact of 'Love to Love You Baby' 01:31:35 Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing' 01:38:38 Rhythm Heritage and TV Theme Songs 01:44:00 Paul Simon's '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover' 01:53:07 Recap and Reflections

Crystal McLain and I go back a few years, and she's been a great source of much needed "woo" in my world, and that has saved my bacon what feels like a million times. So I'm sharing one of my personal sustainability resources here... Crystal is a licensed Massage Therapist slash podcaster - her podcast has the same title as this episode. Her episodes are easy to listen to and forgiving. And I'll say it until I die, she has the cutest giggle. I personally am afraid of being seen as an imposter of someone who has their crap together, but she has magical powers and can see right through it. She's kind and has gentle suggestions to help. You'll see!I've shared her reels on Instagram several times, because they are exactly what I needed to hear, hoping it would reach someone else, too. Do you have a "woo" person, or practice in your life, to keep yourself in check so you can keep on keepin' on? Send me a message and let me know what/who yours is. Feel free to let Crystal know, too - she'd love it!Crystal's message she wants you to leave with: "YOU have the power to create a healthier, empowered, and more fulfilling human experience."You can find Crystal on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@crystal_mclain_creative?lang=eAnd on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/crystalmclaincreative/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at https://www.janebolduc.com/Podcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and check out her awesome art projects.
