Yesterday's Sports is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.EPISODE SUMMARYMuhammad Ali and Larry Holmes called him the hardest puncher they ever faced, harder than Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Mike Tyson. Randall Tex Cobb said: “He hit so hard you felt it in your ankles.” The man they were talking about was Earnie Shavers.Once when George Foreman was asked who the hardest punchers he ever faced were, George responded, “Gerry Cooney, Ron Lyle, and Cleveland Williams.” When asked why Earnie Shavers wasn't on that list, George responded, “I never fought Shavers, thank goodness!”Actor Sylvester Stallone once got a taste of the punching power of Shavers when he invited Shavers to audition for the role of “Clubber” Lang. While Stallone was sparring with Shavers, Earnie, not wanting to hurt him, was hitting Stallone with soft jabs. After a few minutes, Stallone said, “Show me something real Earnie.” So, Shavers let him have it, punching him once near the liver. Stallone later said: “Earnie nearly killed me. I went straight to the men's room and threw up”.....You can read the full blog post here.YESTERDAY'S SPORTS BACKGROUNDHost Mark Morthier grew up in New Jersey just across the river from New York City during the 1970s, a great time for sports in the area. In the early 1960's, the U.S. Army developed a new way of moving troops into and out of strategic locations. It was called Air Cavalry and operated under the theory that moving forces by helicopter was faster and more precise than driving them or having them jump out of airplanes. One of the earliest and best known Air Cavalry engagements was at Landing Zone X-Ray during the Battle of Ia Drang in November 1965. Young Earnie Savage was part of Bravo company in the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry of the 1st Air Cavalry Division. Shortly after landing at X-Ray, his platoon was cut off and the two highest-ranking member of the platoon were killed. That suddenly left him in charge, surrounded by the enemy and trying to keep any other men from being killed. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Savage tells us about the platoon getting cut off, how he adjusted to being in command, his strategy for holding off the enemy for many hours until they could reconnect with other American forces, why he did not get very nervous in combat, and much more.Savage also tells us about going right back to the fight shortly after surviving this ordeal and what it was like to train new members of the battalion after many of his friends completed their tours.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA is good, actually, published by Amy Labenz on November 28, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The last year has been tough The last year has been tough for EA. FTX blew up in the most spectacular way and SBF has been found guilty of one of the biggest frauds in history. I was heartbroken to learn that someone I trusted hurt so many people, was heartbroken for the people who lost their money, and was heartbroken about the projects I thought would happen that no longer will. The media piled on, and on, and on. The community has processed the shock in all sorts of ways - some more productive than others. Many have published thoughtful reflections. Many have tried to come up with ways to ensure that nothing like this will ever happen again. Some people rallied, some people looked for who to blame, we all felt betrayed. I personally spent November-February working more than full-time on a secondment to Effective Ventures. Meanwhile, there were several other disappointments in the EA community. Like many people, I was tired. Then in April, I went on maternity leave and stepped away from the Forum and my work to spend time with my children (Earnie and Teddy) and to get to know my new baby Charley. I came back to an amazing team who continued running event after event in my absence. In the last few months I attended my first events since FTX and I wasn't sure how I would feel. But when I attended the events and heard from serious, conscientious people who want to think hard about the world's most pressing problems I felt so grateful and inspired. I teared up watching Lizka, Arden, and Kuhan give the opening talk at EAG Boston, which tries to reinforce and improve important cultural norms around mistakes, scout mindset, deference, and how to interact in a world where AI risk is becoming more mainstream. I went home so motivated! And then, OpenAI. I'm still processing it and I don't know what happened. Almost nobody does. I have spent far too much time searching for answers online. I've seen some thoughtful write-ups and also many many posts that criticize a version of EA that doesn't match my experience. This has sometimes made me feel sad or defensive, wanting to reply to explain or argue. I haven't actually done that because I'm generally pretty shy about posting and I'm not sure how to engage. Whatever happened, it seems the results are likely bad for AI safety. Whatever happened, I think I've reached diminishing returns on my doomscrolling, and I'm ready to get back to work. The last year has been hard and I want us to learn from our mistakes, but I don't want us to over-update and decide EA is bad. I think EA is good! Sometimes when people say EA, they're referring to the ideas like "let's try to do the most good" and "AI safety". Other times, they're referring to the community that's clustered around these ideas. I want to defend both, though separately. The EA community is good I think there are plenty of issues with the community. I live in Detroit and so I can't really speak to all of the different clusters of people who currently call themselves EA or "EA-adjacent". I'm sure some of them have bad epistemics or are not trustworthy and I don't want to vouch for everyone. I also haven't been part of that many other communities. I am a lawyer, I have been a part of the civil rights community, and I engage with other online communities (mom groups, au pair host parents, etc.). All that said, my experience in EA spaces (both online and in-person) has been significantly more dedicated to celebrating and creating a culture of collaborative truth-seeking and kindness. For example: We have online posting norms that I'd love to see adopted by other online spaces I participate in (I've mostly stopped posting in the mom groups or host parent groups because when I raise an ...

What do backpacks for the homeless, a late 70s Chevy Nova, and a "Sausage Grind" have in common? Earnie Taylor of Chester Lodge #281 in Virginia, that's what! Brother Earnie joins us to talk about how he's been able to apply his skills of bringing people together for various charitable projects to building Odd Fellowship in the Jurisdiction of Virginia. One of the current projects he discusses is the effort to help a lodge in a town far away be able to meet in their hall again after years of not doing so. Along the way we gain some invaluable insight into how lodges can come together and "bundle their sticks" to build stronger communities and stronger lodges. The Shoutout goes to Wisconsin Lodge #14 of Janesville, Wisconsin for their excellent work of holding activities in the community which raise the profile of Odd Fellowship. For the Odd Podge, Toby talks about the recent trove of listener emails, Ainslie shares the insight from his newly-acquired District Deputy Grand Master's handbook, Mike talks about the fancy magazine he receives from another of the groups he belongs to, and Earnie gives a little more of his wisdom.

Trauma is an experience that several of us experience, but we never know how it will impact us in our adulthood. For mothers that carry that trauma with us and continue to repress it, it can show it's ugly head without us having any control over it. I had the pleasure of interviewing my mother, Earnie, and I listened to her share her story of abandonment from her own mother, physical abuse from her grandmother and first husband as well as becoming a first time mother at a young age. From this story I find that it's important for us all to take inventory of what we feel like we're carrying with us that shows itself in the way we parent. And to remember that counseling is always an option to help us heal. Vancouver Whitecaps hit the training pitch for the first time in 2016 and AFTN was there to bring you all the action! Well, all the audio. As players new and old try and make a lasting impression on 'Caps coach Carl Robinson, he'll just be hoping that one or more of his strikers can put the ball in the back of the net on a more consistent basis. We chat with two of those strikers, both of whom have been linked with moves away to pastures new this offseason, Jamaican international Darren Mattocks and Erik Hurtado. Mattocks talks about those transfer rumours, finding his international form at club level and his new found maturity and perspective as a soon to be father, while Hurtado tells us about his loan period in Norway and trying to come back and crack the 'Caps gameday squad. If both players hang around, they'll have a new striker's coach, with former Welsh international Robert Earnshaw announcing his retirement to take that position along with becoming head coach of the U14 Residency team. We chat with Earnie about his decision to retire, his coaching path, the challenges ahead, what he hopes to bring to the U14 team and a lot more. And there's still time to hear from Christian Dean about trying to unseat the centre back pairing of Waston and Parker and making an impression of his own, along with some of the big stories from the first week of preseason camp. Have a listen!
