Send us a textThe 15th March 2025 marks International long covid awareness day, this year is also the five year milestone of the pandemic. For many it will also be reaching their personal 5th year of living with long covid. Kerry and I wanted to mark this milestone with a very organic chat about where we are now, what we would like people to know and understand. We reflect on our personal journey's, the millions of people (of all ages) whose lives have been affected and changed. The losses and the gains in the form of a large and supportive community, we discuss how in the darkness and uncertainty the ME community reached out to let us know we are not alone. We discuss lack of understanding, the continued challenges however we also wanted to celebrate the amazing professors, scientists, consultants, doctors, advocates, charities and support groups, and our families and friends that are by our sides. We discuss the impact chronic conditions have on those we love. We celebrate and thank everyone who stands in solidarity and while this is not an anniversary or something any of us wanted, it is an opportunity to shout louder, have our voices heard and make sure none of us feel alone. #solidarity #onedayatatime My Links:Long Covid clinic -Dr Binita Kane & Julie Taylor; Email: info@thelongcovidclinic.co.uk for more information Episode sponsor; Turnto - This is a brilliant app, a one stop shop to support anyone living with, caring for or supporting and additionally professionals working with people living with Long Covid and or MECFS - please mention The Long Covid podcast n the "how did you hear about us" section, thank you https://turnto.ai/download?utm_source=link&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=livinglongcovidpodcastLinktree:https://linktr.ee/joulestXhttps://twitter.com/julieTa58407536Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/livingwithlongcovid/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/julie_livingwithlongcovidPlanners:https://amzn.eu/d/9v9MP4vReturn to work planner:https://amzn.eu/d/1QVK8zn Well being planner:https://amzn.eu/d/a1Safxc

Almost half of the people who come to Pieta for help are dealing with self-harm, and most of them are under 25. Self-harm is most common among teenagers and young adults. October 9 is commemorated as National Ageism Awareness Day. The National Center to Reframe Aging works to end ageism by advancing equitable and more complete story about aging in America according to the Executive Director, Trish D'Antonio. “What's most important here is that we're raising awareness, because one of the things we've learned in our work, in our research, what we learn is that people aren't aware of ageism. It's one of those things that people just accept. And one of those things that it's not only how people we talk about how we define ageism, it's not only how people might interact with others, “said D'Antonio. The PA Council of Aging provides advice to the governor and department on suggestions on how to plan and provide service for older adults. Velma Carter-Dryer is a member of the PA Council of Aging. She also is a retired social worker. “There's always had always been a bias regarding older adults seeking help in a behavioral health field. Well, a lot of times they didn't hear about different treatment options. They weren't involved in clinical trials. I mean, there were a number of things that we could see. People were always didn't have always had access to even preventive care in that field. And I saw that in health care as well. So, I know that there are many things that we can be doing. And I think the work we're doing with the state plan, what aging the aging in our way, is one of those opportunities to really focus in on ageism and how we can do things better, “said Carter-Dryer. Through experience and research, D'Antonio and Carter-Dryer also learned ageism can occur in every age group. “people have heard comments like, she's too young to run that program. She just finished college. Yeah, well, that's not true either. She might be like a really great leader in a room, Right? And she can run that program just as much as we hear he's too old. He'll never pick up that technology. And it's like him. If you teach him, he will learn just like everybody else does. So like, think thinking about that and that intergenerational work. We know that that's a way to really combat ageism across the life course, “said D'Antonio. “The students learned a lot about what life experiences have been for the older adults that they connected with and these students also. Many of them decided that they wanted to work in the field of gerontology because they had such a positive experience. That doesn't happen all the time, but we really need to capitalize on those opportunities because you will find what's unfortunate is one of those other ageism issues is that geriatrics, gerontology are not those areas where people get paid a lot of salary. They're not a specialty. So people drive too. But that's where we need more people working in the areas. Things will be different, “said Cater-Dryer.      Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep. 63 National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day 9/26 – revisiting my interview from Sept. 2021 with Inspector Steve Hough co-creator of Blue H.E.L.P.To mark the four-year anniversary of my podcast I'm taking a look back and reposting a few episodes from the early days with content and issues that remain relevant today. This is about the tragedy of officer suicide, not just the loss of life, but how that loss of life is regarded. We are all keenly aware of the devastating frequency with which we see reports of yet another officer who has taken his or her own life. For many of you, these losses are not news reports – they are personal and painful. As I said when I aired this interview in 2021, I want to draw attention to this issue and the support that does exist to prevent suicide and do what small part I can to honor those we have lost. So, for National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day on Sept. 26, I'm reposting this interview with Inspector Steve Hough who along with Karen Solomon and Dr. Jeffrey McGill founded Blue H.E.L.P., a non-profit organization committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who have been lost to suicide and to supporting their families and loved ones. It is the only organization in the country that collects LE suicide data. Blue H.E.L.P. also works to de-stigmatize mental health and job stress issues and connects officers to wellness and treatment programs. Blue H.E.L.P. is the organization that in 2020 designated Sept. 26 as National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day. At Blue H.E.L.P.'s website https://bluehelp.org/ you can find important information on services; stories of family members who have lost their LEO to suicide; the Honor Wall recognizing the service of those officers; and information on what you can do for National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day.Blue Help is part of First Help which extends the same honor and services to all first responders and military veterans lost to suicide. This month, First Help unveiled Heroes Memorial Park in Rockwall, Texas which features the monument they are creating on which the names of all first responders and military veterans lost to suicide will be etched. Here is a link with more information:https://1sthelp.org/memorial-park/And one programming note, this originally aired as I said in 2021 when we were in the midst of the pandemic; Covid for that period was taking more lives than we were losing to suicide.
