Welcome to the first guest episode of Navigating Menopause After Cancer. In the last two episodes, I shared why the podcast has entered a new chapter and reflected on the power of stories: how they help us navigate uncertainty, create connection and remind us that we're never alone.Today's conversation is a really beautiful example of exactly that.I'm joined by Michelle and Becky, two incredible women diagnosed with anal cancer back in 2024.I learned on a previous episode on anal cancer (episode 209) that anal cancer is often surrounded by stigma, shame, embarrassment and silence. It's a cancer that simply isn't talked about enough. And treatment for anal cancer can also induce menopause - so we have to talk about it!Yet despite receiving the same diagnosis at almost the same time, Michelle and Becky's experiences were very different.Michelle openly shared her diagnosis but struggled to find someone else living with anal cancer who truly understood what she was going through.Becky found support from others with anal cancer from the very beginning, but didn't feel comfortable telling many of the people around her she had anal cancer, choosing instead to say she had bowel cancer.Together, they share an honest conversation about diagnosis, treatment, menopause, intimacy, identity, stigma and why sharing our true stories matters. One of my favourite parts of this story actually happened away from the recording. After meeting Michelle in person, I introduced her to Ali who had previously shared her own anal cancer story on this podcast... and something rather special has grown from that connection.Episode Highlights:00:00 Intro04:01 Finding support after cancer diagnosis11:19 Dealing with surgical menopause13:22 Post-treatment challenges and loneliness19:17 Rebuilding confidence after cancer22:01 Adjusting to life after stoma surgery23:59 Dealing with radiation side effects28:56 Discussing anal cancer stigma33:01 Connecting with others on TikTok40:06 Cancer treatment challenges and recovery45:06 Returning to fitness after radiotherapy47:49 Finding support during cancerLinks:Find Michelle & Ali's new anal cancer support here: The Brave Behinds https://www.instagram.com/thebravebehinds/?hl=enMacmillan Anal Cancer Support Forum: https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_types/anal-cancer-forumAli Stripling's episode: Beyond the Pink - Anal Cancer, Menopause & Awareness Day: https://youtu.be/V0_5MedxjKw?si=QB-i9XO1uWhQ1MwfThis podcast episode was supported by an unrestricted grant from Incyte Biosciences. "If I could give you one thing for Fibromyalgia Awareness Month, it wouldn't actually be awareness… it would be your life back." - Tami Stackelhouse Fibromyalgia Awareness Day and Month can feel emotionally complicated. Awareness matters. Better research, education, and medical care matter. But at the same time, constantly explaining yourself, proving your symptoms are real, and revisiting painful experiences can be exhausting for people actually living with fibromyalgia. In this special 2026 Fibromyalgia Awareness Day episode, Tami shares a personal message to the fibro community about why awareness matters, why many people with fibromyalgia are already more than aware, the long gap between research and real-world patient care, why a lack of answers is not the same thing as a lack of options, and why improvement is absolutely possible. On this episode of The Menopause and Cancer Podcast, we're marking Anal Cancer Awareness Day (21 March) by shining a light on a cancer that is often misunderstood, stigmatised, and rarely talked about.Anal cancer is caused by HPV, just like cervical cancer, yet it doesn't receive the same awareness or open conversation. It might not feel as “pink” or as socially comfortable to talk about as breast cancer. It's not a cancer that gets glossy campaigns or big awareness drives. There's often stigma. There's embarrassment. There's silence. And that silence can leave people feeling incredibly alone.I'm joined by Ali, who shares her honest experience of being diagnosed with anal cancer; what treatment involved, the physical and emotional impact, and how it affected her confidence, menopause and sexual wellbeing. We also explore an important question: can treatment for anal cancer induce menopause?Pelvic radiotherapy and chemotherapy can affect ovarian function, sometimes triggering sudden or early menopause. We discuss what that means, and whether HRT or local oestrogen may be options. This episode is about inclusion. It's about making sure everyone — regardless of cancer type — feels seen in menopause conversations. If you've ever felt that your cancer isn't the “right” kind to talk about, this episode is for you.Episode Highlights:00:00 Introduction04:33 Cancer Diagnosis: Fear and Isolation12:15 "Stage 3 Cancer Challenges"14:32 "Breaking Stigma Around Cancer"23:22 "Menopause, HRT, and Cancer Journey"27:07 Burnout, Anxiety, and Menopause Journey30:36 "Pelvic Radiotherapy: Long-Term Impacts"36:01 "Barbie Butt: Finding Joy Amid Struggles"41:38 "Menopause, Cancer, and Support Gaps"About our guest Ali:Ali Stripling is a qualified Menopause Wellness Practitioner who was diagnosed with Stage 3 anal cancer in October 2024. Peripheral Artery Disease is more prevalent than most cancers — and often deadlier when missed. Yet it is still underdiagnosed, misunderstood, and too often treated in silos. On this episode of The Heart of Innovation, hosts Kym McNicholas and Dr. John Phillips, Interventional Cardiologist, sit down with Dr. David Dexter, Vascular Surgeon at Sentara Health, who was named the Global PAD Association's Multidisciplinary Team Leader of the Year through the Global PAD Impact Awards. This PAD Awareness Day — observed the third Saturday of every February during American Heart Month — we are talking about why leg health is heart health. PAD is not just a leg problem. Blocked leg arteries are a warning sign for heart attack and stroke. And patients deserve a coordinated vascular care team — not fragmented care. In this conversation, we break down: • Why PAD is more common than many cancers — yet still diagnosed too late • The danger of treating patients in silos • What a true multidisciplinary vascular care team looks like • How cardiology, vascular surgery, podiatry, wound care, and primary care must work together • Why "Sock It to PAD" and Red Sock Day matter during American Heart Month • What patients should demand from their care teams Too many amputations are preventable. Too many heart attacks have warning signs in the legs first. It is time to connect the dots. If you or someone you love has leg pain when walking, numbness, wounds that won't heal, diabetes, kidney disease, or a history of smoking — this conversation could save a limb and a life.

What if maternal health goals expanded beyond "alive and healthy"? In honor of Maternal Health Awareness Day, Debra Pascali-Bonaro invites us to imagine a world where pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care are not only safe but also deeply respectful, emotionally whole, and infused with comfort and pleasure. In this moving solo episode, Debra shares her personal connection to the origins of Maternal Health Awareness Day—beginning in her home state of New Jersey—and explores how far the movement has come, and how far we still must go. With maternal mortality rates rising across the U.S. and nearly 80% of pregnancy-related deaths proven preventable, Debra calls us to collective action: to hold ground, raise our voices, and reclaim maternal health as a human right. From advocacy and policy to embodied care and global collaboration, this episode invites you to consider: what does it mean to move from surviving to thriving with safety, love, and pleasure? In this episode, you'll learn: The origins of Maternal Health Awareness Day and its urgent mission. Why systemic inequities—not personal failures—drive maternal mortality rates. How safety, equity, and pleasure are biologically connected in birth. The protective power of respect, love, and support during birth and postpartum. Practical advocacy steps for expectant parents, birth workers, and allies. Stories like Colin Powell's pro-Jewish stance (due to a Jewish family's kindness) and Mark Twain's truth quote illustrate the trait's power. Key themes include:Essential for Existence: Without remembrance, society collapses, as lending, business, and relationships fail (Deuteronomy 8:11) (0:33–2:30).Loyalty and Prevention of Harm: Recalling benefits curbs ingratitude and harm, as in the Chofetz Chaim's story of vivid childhood memories (2:30–4:44).Practical Applications: Remember pledges, confidences, debts, and Hashem constantly (Psalms 16:8). Awareness days are a starting point, but the real work is in the daily conversations, the stories, and the connection that happens when we talk openly about our lived experiences.I share what it's been like to grow up with CP, the range of experiences within the condition, and why no two stories are alike. I talk about how I've learned to own my story, from being self-conscious about my walk to showing it daily on video, and how I've chosen to stop using humor to hide pain. Living with CP has taught me perspective, resilience, and gratitude for independence, even while dealing with what's likely chronic pain every day.If you live with CP, or know someone who does, I hope this episode encourages you to share your story. What happens when survival meets the unexpected reality of a rare disease? In September 2024, Taylor Coffman first shared her powerful story on The Life Shift. After giving birth to her daughter, she experienced a life-threatening emergency that revealed a rare disease called atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). Her survival came against all odds, and her journey from patient to advocate continues to inspire. To honor aHUS Awareness Day, this replay brings Taylor’s story back to the forefront: How a childbirth emergency uncovered a rare and life-altering diagnosis Why patient empowerment and self-advocacy can make all the difference What resilience, gratitude, and motherhood taught Taylor about living with purpose Replay this conversation and share it to help raise awareness for aHUS and rare diseases that often go unseen. The Communication abilities in Children with Genetic Conditions study collected parent-reported data on communication ability from 113 families and direct speech and language data from 33 children. Data collection has now closed and research reports are in preparation for the three most successfully recruited conditions; KBG syndrome, SYNGAP1-related disorder, and differences in MED13L. While the study was initially open to a wider group of single-gene conditions, it was only possible to recruit full data sets and large enough samples to produce high quality research reports for these three conditions. While not all of the data collected from families will be included in the research publications, all of the data provided by families has been extremely valuable to the study. Where permission has been given, anonymised data will serve as valuable pilot data to support future funding applications for research on relevant gene conditions. We thank all families for their valued time and participation in the project. Further updates will share our research reports as they become available. With best wishes, Harriet and the Communication abilities in Children with Genetic Conditions study team.”   PRESS  JJ in MD https://www.linkedin.com/posts/curesyngap1_syngap1-curesyngap1-activity-7331703029949267969-7AeK/  Stories #34 with Jo Ashline https://curesyngap1.org/podcasts/syngap1-stories/  Warriors Santiago, Axel and Issac! https://curesyngap1.org/syngap-warriors/  Cafe SYNGAP1 with Dina from NY https://curesyngap1.org/podcasts/cafe-syngap1/dina/  NL45 https://mailchi.mp/curesyngap1.org/make-a-splash-for-syngap1-awareness-45   FUNDRAISING Sprint Blog is Epic https://curesyngap1.org/blog/sprint4syngap-raises-over-200k-for-syngap1-in-5th-annual-fundraiser/ MDBR just happened Four team members raised $15,795 so far.
