NASA's Orion spacecraft is on course for its return to Earth on Sunday, Dec. 11. The spacecraft made its second and final close approach to the Moon at 10:43 a.m. CST Monday, Dec. 5, just before its return powered flyby burn, passing 80.6 miles above the lunar surface. The burn, which used the spacecraft's main engine on the European-built service module, lasted 3 minutes, 27 seconds, and changed the velocity of the spacecraft by about 655 mph (961 feet per second). It was the final major engine maneuver of the flight test. “Orion is heading home! Today the team achieved another momentous accomplishment, flying Orion just 80 miles from the surface of the Moon. The lunar flyby enabled the spacecraft to harness the Moon's gravity and slingshot it back toward Earth for splashdown,” said Administrator Bill Nelson. “When Orion re-enters Earth's atmosphere in just a few days, it will come back hotter and faster than ever before – the ultimate test before we put astronauts on board. Next up, re-entry!”

DaVinci Challenge Princess Aliyah Pandolfi created the non-profit Kashmir World Foundation to integrate art, science, and technology for sustainable projects that transform social and economic structures. One of these projects is the DaVinci Challenge: Build a Drone Workshop, which helps students see robotic aircraft from a broader perspective. The workshop trains students and teachers in the design, fabrication, customization, and operation of small robotic aircraft. In this blend of science, technology, art, engineering, and math (STEM/STEAM), students learn about 3D printing, integration of robotic systems, and flying techniques as they build a quadcopter or hexacopter in an actively engaging hands-on and innovative workshop. In the first three days of the workshop, participants build a drone from components, then set up and test them. The fourth day is Flight Day where students perform ground testing and flight check and conduct first flights. At the awards ceremony, participants receive a Drone Operator Certificate. We attended a Flight Day on December 22, 2016, at the Northern Virginia Community College Loudoun Campus, and recorded a number of interviews: High school senior Michael C. Kronmiller discusses using UAVs for avalanche search and rescue in Nepal. For more, see his website Bullis-Kanjirowa STEM. Danny (age 12), Andrew (age 13), and Matthew (age 13) prepare their drone for its first hover. On the field with the boys' mothers as their sons made their first hover. Princess Aliyah Pandolfi talks about her projects: the overarching Kashmir World Foundation, the Wildlife Conservation UAV Challenge, which supports counter-poaching drones, and the DaVinci Challenge. Fadwah and Kitty talk about using drones in the STEM club at Langley High School to increase student involvement. You can provide financial support for this group through Computer Science teacher Susan Huebsch, 703-287-2892. Past workshop graduates Kevin Goth, his son Ben Goth, and Rob Klaus talk about their UAV project that utilizes a Raspberry Pi. Rich Hanson, Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs, AMA describes why the DaVinci Challenge is important to AMA, and to society. Santiago Makes Final Preparations Rich Hanson (AMA) and Princess Aliyah Pandolfi Preparing for First Flight After Flight With Danny, Matthew, and Andrew Santiago Gets His Drone Operator Certificate from Aliyah Pandolfi and Rich Hanson News FAA mulls ditching drone registration advice The FAA's sUAS registration rules should be released shortly. Reportedly, “sources familiar with the matter,” say the FAA might deviate from the Task Force recommendations and impose a $5 registration fee. Also, retailers would be more deeply involved in the registration process.
Flight Day #29 is nearly complete, but high winds in Elko, NV forced The Flight to stop one leg early. Upon landing in Salt Lake City, Michael Combs had officially piloted the Remos Light Sport Aircraft over 17,000 miles! Salt Lake City is the 119th stop and Utah is the 44th state. While at the airport, another weather check revealed that The Flight would be delayed due to a developing rain system in Northern Utah. This may cause The Flight to be grounded for several more days due to high winds that are once again forecase in Nevada. In this episode, you can hear the rain falling in the background as Michael describes the flight from Las Vegas to Salt Lake. What was it like to finally see Hoover Dam from the air? Listen and find out how incredible this journey is.
Flight Day #25 brought Hope One back to the home base in Denton, TX one last time for a photo shoot, and to regroup before setting out to fly the last 8,000 miles of this historic journey. The flight was not without problems though as an unexpected storm loomed on the horizon and Hope One experienced the second flat tire of the nose wheel. In this episode, Michael shares Ten Things that he learned while attending the AirVenture Airshow. What were the fans of The Flight like? What was it like to fly into Oshkosh for the first time? What does he really think the future of aviation holds? Find out the answers to these and other questions in this episode recorded on the day before The Flight for the Human Spirit continues on its trek to Alaska.
