And here's the thing that's really freaking me out. It's set in Marseille in France in 1940. The US hasn't even entered the war yet. And everywhere they go, there is only terrible coffee. Over and over, the main character drinks undrinkable coffee or brown water standing in for coffee. And I know this is not nearly as bad as the bombings and the arrests and the people being ripped from their families but even the rich people in this book have to drink terrible coffee. To keep reading I'm Worried About the Coffee visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. This is Episode 444Song: Java JiveImage by Nathan Dumlao via UnsplashTo support this podcast:Give it 5 stars in Apple Podcasts. The National Children's Alliance (or NCA) is a Washington, D.C.-based network of almost 1,000 Children's Advocacy Centers (or CACs) across the United States. These centers offer crucial services to children affected by abuse, providing them with a safe space to share their stories and access a diverse team of professionals, from health practitioners to law enforcement. CACs have trained nearly 1.6 million people in child abuse prevention, and last year alone, CACs served over 380,000 children. But with this year's $600,000 cut to the Victims of Crime Act funding, CACs now face dire challenges. In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Teresa Huizar, CEO of the NCA, to discuss what these cuts mean for CACs and the vulnerable children who rely on them. We explore how these centers operate, the impact of the funding loss, and various child abuse-related topics. Teresa's insights emphasize why advocacy and support for these centers have never been more urgent.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod Cover photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash. You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. […]

The cultural story of money that we all live in has opened up all kinds of opportunities for trade and exchange in the world. And at the same time, the story is easily one of transaction rather than relationship, of fleeting contact rather that the weaving of deep reciprocal obligation and care, of efficiency, mechanism and convenience over the vulnerability and gifts of connection and reciprocity and community. Is there a way we can live in the story of money in a way that binds us into the gathering of life? This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about how we find our way back to living relationship when the story of money might isolate us and have us feeling separate from one another. It's hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Here's a link to the details of the new Thirdspace Leading from Essential Self programme which we talked about in the previous episode and which is is coming up soon, and to our year-long Professional Coaching Course which begins in June 2022 Turning Towards Life is hosted by Thirdspace. Find us on FaceBook to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google and Spotify. Here's our source for this week: Sometimes to accept is also a gift. The anthropologist David Graeber points out that the explanation that we invented money because barter was too clumsy is false. It wasn't that I was trying to trade sixty sweaters for the violin you'd made when you didn't really need all that wooliness. Before money, Graeber wrote, people didn't barter but gave and received as needs and goods ebbed and flowed. They thereby incurred the indebtedness that bound them together, and reciprocated slowly, incompletely, in the ongoing transaction that is a community. Money was invented as a way to sever the ties by completing the transactions that never needed to be completed in the older system, but existed like a circulatory system in a body. Money makes us separate bodies, and maybe it teaches us that we should be separate. Rebecca Solnit, from 'The Faraway Nearby' Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash

Hello to you listening in Alexandria, Virginia!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Growing up in a family of 9 I remember a never-ending stack of dishes, cups, bowls and silverware to wash and dry. There was also the never-ending whining about whose job it was to clean the dishes. Eventually our parents caved and bought a dishwasher.Did you know there is a right way and a wrong way to stack items in a dishwasher? Who knew? Dishes face this way, cups face that way, silverware goes like so. Each person had their own system doing it all differently. I imagine that scenarios like this go on in most homes and work places. But different does not mean wrong! “Don't ever think that just because you do things differently, you're wrong.” ~Gail TsukiyamaStory Prompt: When have you done something differently only to be told it was wrong? What happened next? How does that experience show up in your personal or business life today? Write that story!Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, including Android, Amazon Music and Audible and join us next time! This week on rabble radio, journalist Wayne MacPhail interviews Deirdre Pike, of the Hamilton Alliance for Tiny Shelters. Hamilton has found itself in the middle of a housing and homelessness crisis. The Hamilton Alliance for Tiny Shelters, or HATS, is a new project inspired by Kitchener's ‘A Better Tent City,' to serve as a temporary solution to the housing crisis in Hamilton by providing small homes for people in need. In 2020, the City of Hamilton released a report which set a framework on ending chronic homelessness by 2025. But this goal can't be achieved without concrete plans and real community action. That's where HATS comes in. Pike is a senior social planner at the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton. Pike speaks with Wayne MacPhail about the challenges the project has faced so far. They discuss what the community has to say about the project, and what services will be available to people who will occupy these cabin community living spaces. “The way things are moving, we're not sure if 2025 is going to be a goal that's met in terms of ‘the end of homelessness,'” Pike says. “If it is, then that should mean small communities like this [The Hamilton Alliance for Tiny Shelters] are temporary and would fold up. But in the meantime, we're making sure that people don't live like this next winter … This is really an opportunity to have people live with some dignity and, probably for the first time in many years, an experience that this is their own place.” If you like the show please consider subscribing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your podcasts. Racism in the United States as well as other countries continues, not just through overt public discourse, but also in its overall system - in housing, banking, schooling, policing, etc. These policies especially affect African-Americans, as well as indigenous people and other people of colour. As Dr. Robert C. Smith, professor emeritus of political science at San Francisco State University explained in his 2010 book Conservatism and Racism, and Why in America They Are the Same, policies that racially discriminate at ground level have found a home in the last half century in the Conservative movement. This has been their means of winning elections and supporters, from Barry Goldwater to Ronald Reagan, from Richard Cheney to Donald Trump. Even progressives have supported policies that end up hurting African-Americans and other minorities in the USA. It's not just what you say, but the end result of your actions that can constitute racism. And after decades of conservative policies on housing, jobs, policing, incarceration, the war on drugs, etc. have disproportionately impacted African-Americans. Can this ever change? Will progressive movements that are anti-racist in nature win the day instead? Listen in to find out! Dr. Robert C. Smith Bio: Robert C. Smith is professor of political science at San Francisco State University. An honors graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, he holds a master’s degree from UCLA and the Ph.D. from Howard. He is author or co-author of scores of articles and essays and ten books including Race, Class and Culture: A Study in Afro-American Mass Opinion; Racism in the Post-Civil Rights Era: Now You See It, Now You Don’t; We Have No Leaders: African Americans in the Post-Civil Rights Era; African American Leadership; Contemporary Controversies and the American Racial Divide; Conservatism and Racism and Why in America They Are the Same; John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama and the Politics of Ethnic Incorporation and Avoidance, What has This Got to Do With the Liberation of Black People?: The Impact of Ronald W. Walters on African American Thought and Leadership and Polarization and the Presidency: From FDR to Barack Obama. He is former associate editor of the National Political Science Review and general editor of the State University of New York Press African American Studies series. He has taught African American politics and American government for more than thirty-five years. Professor Smith is co-author of a leading textbook in the field (American Politics and the African American Quest for Universal Freedom) and the Encyclopedia of African American Politics. He is currently writing a biography of Ronald Walters, his mentor and longtime Howard University professor who he argues is the most consequential African American political scientist of the last half century. In addition to his teaching and research, Professor Smith appears frequently on local and national radio and television programs analyzing American and African American politics. In 1998 he was recipient of Howard University’s Distinguished Ph.D. Alumni Award. In addition, Dr. Smith's book, From the Bayou to the Bay: Autobiography of a Black Liberation Scholar was published earlier this year by SUNY or State University of New York Press. And - exciting news! - later this year Dr. Smith's book How Character Shaped the Trump Presidency will be published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash

Stepping in when life seems a mystery. A conversation about time, with Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This week we talk about how we might understand the mystery of being human. So often both of us find ourselves in a place of real confusion, and it's tempting while there to treat the confusion as something wrong - either with life or with ourselves. We know this is true of many other people too. But there are bigger narratives to step into when life seems a mystery, or when things are breaking down around us and within us. One powerful and stretching source of different perspectives is the 13th century Zen teacher Dogen. Our source for this week begin's with Dogen's suggestion that we are all a kind of 'time', and follows with some questions and interpretation by our friend and colleague James Flaherty. Turning Towards Life is a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash It hurts to hold back and play small. Find out how you may be holding back and how to stop it right now. Are you playing small in life? Do you hold back from speaking the truth, voicing your opinion, asking for what you want? Also, have you ever felt the pain of feeling insignificant? In this episode Cara shares her own battle with playing small and how she's doing her best to shed this unhelpful, and often destructive habit. Especially relevant is an inspiring quote by Marianne Williamson that is fueling her motivation to stop playing small. "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." How Playing Small Hurts What does it feels like in your body, heart and mind to play small? Furthermore can you notice what gets constricted? Are you willing to experience where you hold tension when you feel insecure? On the other hand, what does it feel like to let it rip, to be big and brave, bold and courageous? Lastly, cannot expect "being big" to just happen. We can't expect others to do the work for us. The first step to changing is to look at how you play small. Observing is the key to shifting behavior. Where do you play small? What does playing small feel like in your body, heart and mind What does it feel like to play big? In addition, If playing small hurts you then consider stepping into today open and available to be guided by your deepest intelligence, your brilliance. Remember that as you let our own light shine you unconsciously give others the permission to do the same. When we are born, we are blinded to the truth of good and evil. Even if we are good in behavior, we are still ignorant of what is good and evil. We don't know the difference between good and evil until we come to the knowledge of what good and evil is. Therefore, we are born blind of the knowledge of good and evil until good and evil is revealed or taught. It is Jesus who brings us into the knowledge of the truth and delivers us from falling into evil as we pursue righteousness in Him. It is Jesus who brings us into the light and the life of truth so that we do not sin. It is the Holy Spirit who convicts us as we come into the revelation knowledge of true life so that we come out of the sin that brings death. Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash.
