Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a brand new theme of "Middle Aged Godzilla" where we cover Godzilla films from the 80s and early 90s, starting with The Return of Godzilla (1981)!This film was a "return" to form for Godzilla films after the silly direction the franchise went during the 60s and 70s. Despite some predictibly bad human stories, this film had an amazing second half that really showed up! I gave this film a 7.5/10 for bringing moody Godzilla back and doing a good job at honoring the original film while also brining in some new techniques and techonology to update the franchise. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "Deep South Horror" theme with the disappointing but gory Lucio Fulci film, The Beyond (1981).I wanted to like this film alot more, but the story was simply too nonsensicle. I gave this film a 6/10 for some great practical effects and a really intersting premise, but for simply not delivering any kind of coherent plot of story which left much to be desired. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our "Deep South Horror" theme with the Kate Hudson vehicle, The Skeleton Key (2005)This movie may have lack scares and Hudson's character may have been way too pushy (almost unrealistically so) but I gave this film a 6.5/10 for providing some amazing Deep South vibes, and having a great hoodoo ghost mystery concept. The vibes were there, the spooks were not, but overall I'd recommend. This month for the Movie News Podcast I'm running solo but Matt should be back with us next month! Lots to cover this month from Predator: Badlands to a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Sequel so listen to the episode to find out all the details!
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a new theme of "Deep South Horror" starting with the very topical vampire film Sinners (2025)As it turns out, Sinners is every bit as good as everyone is saying! I gave this film a 9/10 for blending craft, histroy, and good storytelling so well that this film has earned itself the "instant classic" description. I only wished it was a little longer, which is saying alot for a 2 hr. 17 min. movie! For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are sadly finishing up our "Aspad Spookers" theme with the Sam Raimi ghost mystery The Gift (2000)! This movie did a great job of giving the small town, deep south aesthetic and there were plenty of good supernatural spooks to boot! I gave this film a 7/10 for being a fun mystery with lots of good characters and an A class cast list! I only wish the narrative was more focuses and the scares were more effective. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews
Welcome back to Flim Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our Aspad Spookers theme with the unfairly maligned Gothika (2003)! Despite having a terrible score from both critics and users on IMDb, this film pleasently provided me with all the "gothic" atmosphere I could have ever wanted, and a fun spooky murder mystery to boot! I gave this film a 7/10 for its good performances and creative cinematography/set design despite falling flat in the end and being prone to plot holes. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews
Welcome back to Flim Haven Reveiws!!! This week we are starting a new speical theme of "Aspad Spookers", named after my lovely fiance, with the 1999 Kevin Bacon ghost/mystery Stir of Echoes. This movie hit all the main points that a good ghost story should with some fun unique aspects like being set in Chicago and Kevin Bacon's great performance. I gave this film a 7/10 for everything I mentioned above, with the caveat of a story that meandered a bit and some mediocre script writing in the second half. All in all, I still very much enjoyed the film! For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "70's Neo-Noir" theme with the Robert Mitchum vehicle, Farwell, My Lovely (1975)I rather enjoyed this mostly by the books noir tale. It paid homage to many of the classics of the 40's while also providing enough quality on its own to make it worth your time! I gave this film an 8/10 for its great direction, set design, and terrific performances, espically from Mithcum. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are celebrating two years of the podcast as well as the life of legendary actor Gene Hackman by reviewing his Neo-Noir film Night Moves (1975)!I was both impressed and underwhelmed by this film. It was competentantly made and expressed all of the great hallmarks of an anti-detective film, but its story was also dry and compared to last week's episode, Chinatown (1974), it simply pales in comparison. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for giving great service to its genre, great acting from Hackman, and an interesting narrative, that while drive, did deliver, even if its delivery wasnt as good as Chinatown's. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a new 70's Neo-Noir theme with one of the most famous Neo-Noir film's of all time Chinatown (1974). As it turns out, there is a reason this film is so highly regarded...its amazing! I gave this film a 9/10 for its perfect blend of craft, storytelling, and on-screen performances. Jack Nicholson is amazing, the camerawork and score are incredible, and the setting is beautifully threaded throughout the entire film. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "Bloody Western" theme with the action packed If You Meet Sartana...Pray for Your Death (1968). This film was more professionally made then last week's Massacre Time (1966) but somehow that made it even more boring, since it was missing lots of the fun quirks that Fulci's film had. However, the action was much better and there was still tons to enjoy in this convuluted but atmosphereic Spaghetti Western. I gave this film a 6/10 for having a super high kill count and lots of fun gadgets to enjoy, but having an overstuffed plot that was too dry and boring. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing our Bloody Western theme with the famous Spaghetti Western film Massacre Time (1966). This movie was certainly a step down from The Wild Bunch in terms of blood effects and general quality but there were still things to enjoy, even if it was for the humor of its ridiculousness. I gave this film a 6/10 for being entertainingly bad with some flashes of brilliance in the action choreography and practical effects that may have been a smidge a head of its time. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews for the 100th Episode!!!! Thank you to all of you who have stuck with the show this entire time and welcome all who are just now tuning in! This week we are starting a new Bloody Western Theme with one of the most famous and violent westerns of all time, The Wild Bunch (1969)This film was all about the peaks and valleys: moments of tremendous actions followed by long bouts of exposition. While that made the film feel boring at times, the highlights certainly outweighed the low points and I gave this film an 8/10 for its innovative action choreography and use of practial effects. Welcome back to Film Haven Reivews!!! This week we are closing out the "Night of the..." theme with an all time classic! Night of the Living Dead (1968)Other than some narrative pacing issues and some annoying characters, this film holds up surprisingly well, still providing some creepiness and tons of spooky atomsphere. I gave this an 8/10 for being the first zombie movie and still be very entertaining. Lots of great cinematography and a wonderful leading man in Duane Jones. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing our "Night of the..." theme with the cult comedy classic Night of the Creeps (1986)I was pleasantly surprised by this hilarous teen horror parody as it went beyond silly humor and actually made for a decent film as well. I gave this movie an 8/10 for being subtely self-aware but also exceeding in all of the aspects of the horror genre that it was actively poking fun at. Great practical effects, good storyline, fun hokey acting, and grand finale. I highly recommend. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we will be starting a new "Night of the..." theme while also branching into a whole new era for Film Havens with our first (sort of) video episode! This week we are starting off the theme with Night of the Comet (1984). This movie was frankly a disappointment. What was supposed to be a fun and punchy satire, ended up being a sometimes clever snoozefest. I was so bored I literally started falling asleep halfway through. I gave this film a 5/10 for having some redeemable qualities and some truly clever humor, but not deliever the promised goods and becoming ultimately forgettable. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "Anime Bucket List" theme with the wacky and reality warping Paprika (2006).This was a visually stunning and impressively displayed film and its premise was hard to follow but in a way that made the journey fun and not tiresome like it could have. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for providing a unique experience while maybe not having quite as much substance as the previous movies in this theme. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our "Anime Bucketlist" theme with the legendary sci-fi masterpeice Akira (1988)This movie, like the last review, deserves all the credit it is given for it is not only groundbreaking in terms of craft and animating skill, but also in story and substance. I gave this movie an 8.5/10 for being beautiful, intriguing, and cinematic, if not just a tad too convoluted. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are starting a new "Anime Bucketlist" theme where I watch some of the most well regarded animated films of all time. This week we are diving into the extremely sad Grave of the Fireflies (1988).Equal parts beautiful and crushing, this movie was an experience I will never forget, even if right after watching it, I wanted to. I gave this film a 9/10 for its gorgeous imagery and heartwarming story, as well as its existential importance and its reflection on life and death. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reivews!!! This week we are finishing up our Walter Hill: Origins theme with possibly his most famous film, The Warriors (1979).This movie is an icon and now after watching it, I can see why. There is tons of memorable imagery, with the various different gangs being displayed and the grimey but intriguing setting of 1970s NYC, and there's also a great plot structure with the titular Warriors having to try and escape the city while every gang in the Bronx is trying to take them out. I gave this film an 8/10 for having tons of great style and memorable moments, with the only caveat being a slight drag in the narrative about halway thorugh. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our Walter Hill: Origins theme with the very cool and influential The Driver (1978). While this was certainly a very stylistic film, it was also pretty boring and that weighed down the enjoyement for me. It is certainly influential but that doesn't always mean it holds up amazingly. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for giving some great car chase scenes, flashes of brilliance in the cinematography, but stale characters that failed to fully entertain. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting the new "Walter Hill: Origins" theme with his directorial debut Hard Times (1975). There are no surprises with this film, but it offers everything you could want from a psuedo-southern western involving Charles Bronson cage fighting increasingly difficualt opponents. I gave this film an 8/10 for haveing a great setting, wonderful cosutme design, and a very straighforward but enjoyable narrative that kept me highly entertained throughout its length. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are concluding out "Ingrid Bergman" theme with the famous Alfred Hitchcock film Notorious (1946). While I very much enjoyed this movie, I found myself a little surprised at how high the critical ratings are. On imdb this film has a 100 Metascore and that seems a little overblown to me. However, I still gave this movie a 7.5/10 for being a highly entertaining spy romance and filled with some good camerawork and great performances from Bergman and Grant. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reivews!!! This week we are continuing out Ingrid Bergman theme with the influential pychological thriller Gaslight (1944). I really appreciated this film for its authenticity and its accuracy in portraying psychological abuse. The film's narrative trajectory was fascniating to watch and resulted in a very satisfying conclusion. I gave this film an 8.5/10 for great set design, convincing acting, and a unique hook. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a new "Ingrid Bergman" theme with the WWII contemporary classic Casablanca (1942). I had heard this film was overrated but was pleasantly surprised to find that its actually a delightful film filled with incredible craft, convincing acting, and unique setting. I gave this film an 9/10 for its precendence and its ability to withstand the test of time. This film is simply timeless. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "Masters of Giallo" theme with the incredbily vibrant Kill, Baby...Kill! (1966)Bava has outdone himself again, with another beautifully shot, atmospheric masterpiece filled with mystery and witchcraft. I gave this film a 9/10 for bascially crafting the perfect October Spooker filled with foggy cemeteries, antiquated stone villages, and a creepy mansion to boot! I can't recommend this film enough. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing out "Masters of Giallo" theme with the enjoyable and mysterious Lucio Fulci film, The Psychic (1977).This film was much more enjoyable than last week's Deep Red, with a narrative that was consistently engaging and a score and cinematography that wasn't constantly taking me out of the film. I gave this movie a 7.5/10 for doing exactly what it set out to do, and providing some fun twists and turns, even if the film itself felt sort of by the books for its genre. It will certainly be the new standard for Lucio Fulci films I see in the future. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a brand new theme called "Giallo Masters" or "Masters of Giallo" one of those! And we are starting off with the very famous Argento classic, Deep Red (1975). A tale of two movies, this film both impressed me greatly and disappointed me deeply. The cinematography and kills were great, but the sound design and story arc left me heavily wanting. I gave this film a 7/10 for providing an uneven, but overall satisfying experience, and showing such incredible craft when it comes to the the camerawork and practical effects. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are going to finishing up our "Slasher Satire" theme with the very "fun" film Vicious Fun (2020). Very aptly named, this film is alot of fun and provides tons of laughs as well as a unique and engaging plot. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for giving great 80s vibes, making funny references to 80s horror and serial killers, and generally suceeding in everything that it set out to do. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our "Slasher Satire" theme with the very well made Tragedy Girls (2017)This film felt much more natural than last week's episode on The Final Girls (2015). There was geniunely funny moments and the humor felt baked in. The commentary also felt more substantive and the acting was also really well done. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for actually being able to pull off a solid horror/comedy and deserving to be called a decent slasher satire which are hard to come by! For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Flim Haven Reviews!! This week we are starting a whole new theme of "Slasher Satire" with the Friday the 13th Parody film The Final Girls (2015). I really appreciate this film's concept, being a sort of magic realist time loop movie where people get sucked into a movie, but unfortunatley the execution wasn't all the way there. I gave this film a 6/10 for not being funny enought to be a comedy, and not being R rated enough to be a slasher. It was ambitous but not overly successful in its aims which left me feeling fairly "meh" about it. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing out our "Obscure 80's Horror" theme with the cult classic Dead and Buried (1981)!This film was quite a plesant surprise for me as I loved the setting, the story, and the practical effects involved. It turns out that one of the biggest names in Practical effects and make-up worked on this film, Stan Winston, and it really shows! I also loved the foggy town vibes and the mysterious nature of the plot. I gave this film an 8/10 for being all around unique and enjoyable! For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews! This week we are continuing out "Obscure 80s Horror" theme with the very interesting film Prison (1987).This one was a true mixed bag, with a great setting and a very unique concept, but an "execution" that was so hit or miss that it muddied the waters too much. I gave this film a 6/10 for providing some cool spectacle and great acting (from at least half of the cast) but leaving a bad taste in my mouth by killing sympathetic charactrers and having a very unenjoyable antagonist. ALSO I was on another episode of The Movie Podium this week where we talked about the 1992 Batman Returns from Tim Burton! I'll put a link to the youtube video here and I HIGHLY recommend everyone check it out and follow their page! They're great! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfjLQwXjOdc

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week were are kicking off spooky season with a new theme of "Obscure 80s Horror" starting with The Gate (1987). I really enjoyed this film, its nothing crazy and it sort of feels like a one-off Stranger Things story, but that's what I liked about it! I gave this film a 7.5/10 for some great effects, some cool spooks, and perfect 80s horror vibes. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are finishing up our "Seasons Change" theme with the film An Autumn Afternoon (1962). This was Yosijiru Ozo's last film, and unfortunatley, its not really his best. It has all the halmark's of his unique style, but doesn't excell at any of them. I gave this film a 6.5/10 for being too similar to Ozo's older films, while not being as good, so while there were some redeemable aspects, mainly the main character's performance, the overall vibe of the film was off and I didn't get much out of it. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our "Seasons Change" theme with the much more anxiety inducing Early Spring (1956). This film was about an extramartial affair and so there was markedly more conflict and drama held within its narrative, which was both a blessing and a curse. I was less calmed by this film than last week's Early Summer (1951), but I was also more attentive to it. I definitley wasn't bored. I gave this film an 8/10 for still providing wonderful cinematography, an equally multilayered concept, and terrific acting. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a new theme called "Seasons Change" and we are kicking it off with the very pleasant Early Summer (1951). This film was so sweet and nice, I felt enriched by its life lessons and calming atmosphere. I gave this film an 8/10 for telling a beatiful story that shows a very human story of how generations handle the changing of the times and how life moves forward whether we like it or not. I was also on a podcast epsidoe recently and am going to post the links to both the spotify episode and the youtube video here in the show notes! Check it out! Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our Cyberpunk 1995 theme with the aggresively middling Virtuosity (1995). I had a fairly fun time with with this cop thriller made up to be a cyber thriller. Watching Russell Crowe play an "unhinged" AI amalgamtion of every serial killer known to man was a blast, it was just alot of the other parts that were a snooze. I gave this film a 6/10 for bringing some interesting additions to an extremely worn out genre. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our Cyberpuck 1995 theme with Hackers (1995). This film was lots a fun and suprisingly based in reality. While lots of the "hacking" was not very realistic, it was obvious that the creators knew what real hacking was and so the concepts were authentic, even if the actions were cinematically embelished. I gave this film a 7/10 for providing a fun look into the cyberpunk culture of the mid-90s despite having some pretty forumlaic plot points. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting off our Cyberpunk 1995 theme with the cult classic Johnny Mnemonic (1995). This film was a mixed bag for me. While providing some really fun and entertaining world building, it also delivered some terrible acting and generic plot elements that kept the film from reaching its full potential. I gave this film a 7/10 for still being highly unique and entertaining, depsite its obvious shortcomings. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reivews!!! This week we are concluding our Arctic Antics theme with the very detailed and well producted Scott of the Antarctic (1948). This film is a feast for the eyes, and if anyone has ever wanted to see what an arctic expedition entails, this film will show you step by step what it is like. I gave this film a 8.5/10 for its near documentary styled authenticiy as well as its impressive production design, emotionally engaging story, and great acting. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our "Arctic Antics" theme with the under the radar arctic survival adventure film The Red Tent (1969). While it didn't start off great, it doesn't take too long for this film to come into its own and offer a thrilling adventure filled with lots of tension and a fair amount of commentary as well. This being the first co-production between the Soviet Union and the West is also a very interesting and unique aspect of the flim that you can actually feel while watching it. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for entertaining throughout and offering up fun quanderies about leadership that gets audiences thinking a little too! Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a new theme of "Arctic Antics" with the aptly named well made survival film Arctic (2018).This film was very successful as far as survival films go. There was a very basic plot and almost no lines of dialogue, and yet somehow that made the film more engaging. I gave this film a 8/10 for its great pacing, interesting concepts, and emotional rollercoaster! Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "Spider" theme with the most middling entry in the bunch, Sting (2024).I hated ending on a movie that wasn't as good as the other two but, hey, that's how it goes sometimes. The biggest problem with the film was less than ideal pacing and critically bad acting from its lead, which sullied alot of the potential impact of the drama. I still gave this a 6/10 for being a solid creature feature and having a cool climax. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our "Spider" theme with the creepy crawly French film Infested (2023). This movie was surprisingly effective in producing scares and chills within a swarming spider creature feature. After last week, I had assumed spider movies would be better served as part comedy, but this film proved me wrong as it went completely straight and still was able to be very effective. I gave this film an 8/10 for having a great setting, and providing a tense claustrophobia ridden thirll ride that also had very geniune emotional notes from its characters. Great film all around! For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
