Table tennis hits London and the podcast this week, as the city hosts the World Team Table Tennis Championships and Table Tennis England CEO Sally Lockyer joins the show. The Championships which include 64 men's and 64 women's teams are competing at two London venues, the Copper Box and Wembley's OVO Arena over the next fortnight. Lockyer has been front and centre of the preparations, heading up the joint venture that is responsible for organising and staging the tournament.She discusses what's been keeping her up at night as the championships - the centenary edition - get underway and assesses what the legacy might be, as Table Tennis England looks to a digital transformation that aims to further engage its membership and more casual ping pong participants. Lockyer also assesses the wider challenges smaller national governing bodies are faced with, and assesses China's role as a table tennis superpower. She also takes us behind the scenes on the trade mission to China and Japan, led by Keir Starmer and the UK government, she joined earlier this year, to showcase table tennis and its status as a soft power tool.

Finally a review of the Table Tennis movie. The two things that stand out, this is one Safdie brother going solo on this film after the mighty one-two of Good Times and Uncut Gems, and I've not been kind to the "Marlon Brando" of our age, Timothy "Baby-Cham" Chamalet. He does actually give a very good performance here, and it's a fine film - but it's not in the same league as Uncut Gems and could easily have been an hour shorter. The Ron Howard of Safdie movies.

Send us a textSteve Claflin's life in racket sports is one of resilience, reinvention, and passion. A former nationally-ranked table tennis champion and Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Steve's competitive career was nearly ended by a devastating knee injury and infection in 2002. After years of rehabilitation, he found his way back to the game in 2010 through hardbat ping pong, a slower, strategy-driven version of table tennis that relies less on explosive movement and more on stamina and tactics. What began as a chance substitution at the U.S. Open turned into a second career. In 2022, Steve founded and became Chair of the International Classic Table Tennis Federation (ICTTF), which now organizes world events across Mexico, China, and Brazil. At the 2024 World Cup in Mexico City, he earned a silver medal in the Over 55 Championship. Today, Steve continues to champion ping pong globally, proving that active aging means adapting, competing, and thriving.

Judy Hoarfrost has wielded a paddle as far back as she can remember, but it was apparent when she won her first National Championship at the age of 12 (Junior Girls) that she was destined for a life in Table Tennis. In this episode of Pickleball Fountain of Youth, host Steve Paranto dives deep into Judy's historic, Hall of Fame role as a Table Tennis pro, her recent introduction to pickleball and her success in bringing her incredible skills from Table Tennis to the pickleball court.  At just 15 years old, Judy was the youngest member of the US National Team competing at the '71 World Table Tennis Championships in Nagoya, Japan. She was a member of the “Ping Pong Diplomacy” Team that made history in 1971 when they toured China and met Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. She was many-times a US Junior Champion, 2-time US Senior Champion, a 3-medal winner of the Pan Am Games, and 2-time Oregon Champion for both Men & Women. In 2020, Judy was introduced to pickleball and connected with her future Mixed Doubles partner, Pickleball Hall of Famer Steve Paranto. Just 2 years later she would win gold in Women's Doubles 65+ 4.5 at the 2022 USA Pickleball National Championships.  Judy was inducted into the US Table Tennis Hall of Fame, as well as the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. She is the owner of Paddle Palace, which sells all things Table Tennis.
