Send us a message. We open with Daniel Arnold's new book You Are What You Do from Loose Joints — the sequencing, the blank pages, the editor's role — and end up on a harder question: what happens when you spend a decade on something and the first question someone asks is "what's next?" We talk through Josh Safdie's account of finishing Uncut Gems and why that question lands like an insult, and whether there's also something honest, even useful, about just moving on.That leads into the photo walk question: can you actually make work when you're with other people, or is this a medium that demands solitude? We use it as a way into what we think is genuinely missing from the Omaha creative scene — not talent, but the kind of competitive pressure that only comes from being around people operating at a high level and taking it seriously. We draw a line between community (people talking about ideas) and scene (people making work and raising the floor for each other). We also get into the difference between finding something valuable and making something from nothing, what it actually takes to own the label of photographer or writer without feeling like you're lying, and why "what's the point?" is the specific thought pattern that keeps you consuming instead of working. The answer, more or less: momentum is the point. -AiSupport the show If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. We appreciate and try to read all of them. Ross Brodar joins The Film Situation for a wide-ranging conversation about filmmaking, New York stories, and the strange overlap between cinema and real life. Ross has worked as a locations manager on acclaimed films including ANORA, MARTY SUPREME, and projects with directors such as Sean Baker, James Gray, and Josh Safdie. In this episode, Ross breaks down the art and logistics of location scouting, transforming real-world environments into cinematic spaces, and collaborating with visionary directors and production designers. The conversation also dives deep into Ross's gripping documentary The Linchpin of Bensonhurst, which chronicles the unbelievable life of Dominic Montiglio, a Vietnam veteran, artist, singer, and former associate of the infamous DeMeo crew tied to the Gambino crime family. Ross shares how he met Dominic by chance, ended up living with him for years, and spent over a decade documenting his life story. Along the way, Zef and Ross discuss New York in the ‘80s and ‘90s, CBGB's, Roseland Ballroom, collecting money for Sicilian fish markets, and why some true stories are ultimately stranger than fiction. Ross also shares one of his favorite movie scenes of all time: the iconic “Tears in Rain” sequence from BLADE RUNNER.   Hosted by Zef Cota * Website for Ross' documentary: THE LYNCHPIN OF BENSONHURT: The Dominick Montiglio Story https://www.dominickmontiglio.org

Send us Fan MailWe're back with a full review of Marty Supreme, one of the most talked-about Oscar-nominated films of the year — and honestly, one we'd been looking forward to digging into since the nominations dropped. We break down everything: Timothée Chalamet's career-redefining performance, the Safdie Brothers' meticulous directorial vision, the stunning period authenticity of the set design, and what makes this film feel like something genuinely different in the current landscape of hustle-driven storytelling. The conversation covers the real-life influences behind the film, the themes of ambition and dreaming big that run through every scene, and what makes Josh Safdie's solo direction so compelling: a meticulous, choreographed visual style that gives Marty Supreme its distinct energy. We also get into the supporting cast, some surprising cameos, and what A24's continued awards success means for the kinds of films that are getting made and celebrated right now.We don't agree on everything — the ending sparked some debate — but both of us came away feeling like this was one of the stronger entries in this year's Oscar class. If you haven't seen Marty Supreme yet, this episode will give you plenty of reasons to change that. And if you have, we think you'll find a lot to agree with — and maybe a few things to push back on.We also spend some time in the back half of the episode talking about the broader state of cinema: what AI means for the future of filmmaking, how marketing shapes public perception of prestige films, and why we still believe a great year at the movies is worth celebrating. All 10 Best Picture nominees this year are worth your time, and Marty Supreme is near the top of that list.Support the showOh Brother Podcast:Support the Show!

Dave takes us through the latest on the Iran War and what it means: nothing! We're still trying to figure out if we'd like to get drafted and die in Iran, or stay here and die of Measles. More importantly, Brendan has a bone to pick with the fellas for not appreciating his one-word message in the group chat: cloacular. These philistines don't understand true art when they see it. Chatmogged. We are unfortunately discussing Glenn Beck again, and his good pal AI George Washington. General Sloppington makes some very interesting insights into the current situ-haha just kidding. He makes a bunch of mouth sounds that resemble coherent sentences as Beck drools in awe. As they say online “this must hit so hard if you're a dumbass”. Finally, we discuss Marty Supreme. Once again, Josh Safdie brings us a tense, grimy NYC thriller with stunt casting and parts that have no business working, yet do anyway. Case in point: Mr Wonderful from Shark Tank plays a major role and knocks it out of the park. May we humbly suggest a starring role for Senor Wonderful in a Harry S Truman biopic? Finally, we round things up with some Oscar prognosticating. Please do not bet on our favorites, unless you win and then you have to give us a cut. By reading this sentence you have agreed to the above terms. Thank you.

2025 was a big year for film. Theaters drew people in for a wide variety of stories. Moviegoers saw thrillers like Paul Thomas Anderson's “One Battle After Another” and Josh Safdie's “Marty Supreme.” They saw the returns of beloved characters with James Gunn's “Superman” and James Cameron's “Avatar: Fire & Ash.” They embraced the strange with “Bugonia,” the romantic with “Materialists” and the tragic with “Frankenstein.”But, as has been increasingly the case in recent years, droves of moviegoers also showed up to films with heavily religious themes.Faith based studios and directors produced a variety of faith-forward movies with family-friendly animated movies like “David“ or “Light of The World” and more mature films such as “Guns and Moses” or “The Last Rodeo. But faith also appeared in many religiously unaffiliated Hollywood films, such as the latest installment of the “Knives Out” franchise which focused on the murder of a controversial catholic priest and Ryan Coogler's “Sinners,” which explored the clashes of spirituality and conventional religion. As the Oscars are fast approaching this weekend, Religion Unplugged's Culture Editor Jillian Cheney and Film Critic Joseph Holmes sat down with public intellectual and theologian Paul Anleitner. Paul is the President and CEO of Goodmakers, and the author of “Based on a True Story: Vibe Shifts, the End of Deconstruction, & the Reboot of Meaning,” which comes out this summer and is available for pre-order now. Jillian, Joseph and Paul talk through the spiritual and religious themes of some of this years' most beloved Oscar Nominees including “Sinners,” “Train Dreams,” “One Battle After Another” and “F1.”#oscars #goodmakers #podcast #paulanleitner #traindreams #sinners #f1 #onebattleafteranother

Harry and Daniel are joined by writer Leigh Stein, author of the novel If You're Seeing This, It's Meant for You, to unpack the ambition, anxiety, and Jewish bravado pulsing through Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie.Rather than simply treating the film as a sports drama, the conversation zeroes in on Marty as a driven artist figure — obsessive, self-mythologizing, hungry for greatness, and constantly performing his own legend. What does it mean to chase excellence not just as an athlete, but as a Jew carrying history, insecurity, and defiant pride on his back (and sometimes around his neck)?Leigh brings her sharp cultural lens to questions of ego, survival, and spectacle — including Marty's provocative swagger and the ever-lingering communal anxiety: Is this good for the Jews? Is Marty a symbol of resilience, a caricature of excess, or both at once? It's a lively, searching conversation about ambition, representation, and the thin line between self-invention and self-delusion — with plenty of ping-pong metaphors along the way.Marty Supreme Movie TrailerMarty Supreme on IMDbLeigh's LinksIf You're Seeing This, It's Meant for YouLeigh Stein on InstagramLeigh Stein on SubstackConnect with Jews on Film online:Jews on Film Merch - https://jews-on-film.printify.me/productsInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/jewsonfilm/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jewsonfilmpodYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@jewsonfilmTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@jewsonfilmpod

Degen Oscar season comes to a close as the boys grapple with seeing younger versions of themselves in Josh Safdie's 'Marty Supreme.' Andy kicks it off with a sprawling degenerate tale as he recalls the time he went to extreme (illegal) lengths to buy a replacement bass guitar part, which led to him relying on the greatest skill he had: playing claw machines. Then the fellas discuss a movie that some may see as standard Safdie running against time ridiculousness, while the guys see decisions that were emblematic of their chaotic plate-juggling youths as they realize they once lived the Marty Supreme lifestyle. With impeccable set design from the '50s, a wondrous score and needle drops from the '80s, and dialogue from present day the film takes place in post-WWII NYC but is of an indefinable era. Besides Timothée Chalamet powerhouse lead the movie is littered with non-actors, recognizable character actors, and a slew of stunt casting heavies. Afterwards, the guys rank the anti-heroes from Safdie movies, and make a case for why Marty is more sympathetic than his sociopathic behavior would have you believe. Because if you haven't risked it all by spinning too many plates, and over-promising to people around you in your 20s then you never experienced the Degen lifestyle.

Our Oscars Run continues this week on We Drink & We Watch Things with the most over-caffeinated and divisive contender in the race: Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme. This isn't just a sports movie; it's a chaotic, 1950s-set "ping-pong nightmare" that plays like a heist film where the only thing being stolen is glory. Pour yourself our cocktail of the week - The Hydrator - because this movie doesn't let you breathe for its entire 149-minute runtime. This week, we talk through Timothée Chalamet's electric, polarizing performance as Marty Mauser, a spindly, obsessive table tennis hustler who treats every match like a life-or-death battle for his own soul. We examine the film's unique, frantic energy - reminiscent of Uncut Gems - and analyze Gwyneth Paltrow's stylish return to the screen as the glamorous, world-weary Kay Stone. We also highlight the incredible supporting work of Odessa A'zion, who brings some much-needed humanity to the chaos as the woman Marty leaves in his wake. It's a discussion about the toxic drive for the American Dream, the absurdity of professional ping-pong, and whether Chalamet's "anti-hero" swagger is enough to finally nab him that Best Actor statue. If you're tracking the Oscar race with Mackenzie or just want to hear us debate whether a movie about a "sociopathic screwball" can actually win Best Picture, this is the episode for you. We're blending our awe for the film's kinetic style with our usual casual banter, making this a high-speed highlight of our Oscars Month journey. Sim. Genial? He also shares how collaboration across every department shaped the film's emotional power.“Anamorphic can be very minimal… The important thing is the way it renders closeups; it makes people bigger than life, like black and white does… The real old classic anamorphic of the fifties—I wanted to go back to this feeling… Anamorphic is like a magnifier. If the movies you're seeing lately feel like they were assembled by a committee rather than a creator, you're looking at the wrong side of the lens. We are dusting off a classic format today, leaning into the kind of raw film breakdowns we used to live for. The spotlight is on two heavyweights: Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme and Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. Both of these pictures have just locked in Best Picture nominations for the 2026 Academy Awards, and it feels like a signal fire. After years of franchise fatigue and focus-tested safety, we are looking at a lineup that suggests great, uncompromising cinema is finally clawing its way back to the center of the frame. Fair warning: we aren't holding anything back here, so consider this a total spoiler warning. We are going deep into the structure, the endings, and the technical magic tricks that make these films work: from the anxiety-inducing rhythm of Safdie's 1950s ping pong subculture to Anderson's mastery of the long-lens Mojave car chase. This year's nominations feel like a turning point, a collective realization that the audience is hungry for movies that challenge them rather than just pat them on the back. It's a look at why the "cavalry isn't coming" for Hollywood, and why that might be the best news we've heard in decades for anyone who actually cares about the craft of visual storytelling. //links// Monstrous Moonshine > Marty Supreme Trailer > One Battle After Another Trailer > Original Ending of Marty Supreme >   This episode is sponsored by: Center Grid Virtual Studio Kitbash 3D (Use promocode "cggarage" for 10% off)

Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. The "Schmoovie" of the week is "Marty Supreme," starring Timothée Chalamet (who also co-produced), Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher. It was produced and directed by Josh Safdie, who also co-wrote the script, alongside Ronald Bronstein. Like the very Jewish film it is, it arrived to the world on December 25 and so Borschel-Dan had to make a rare outing into a Jerusalem cinema. She brings back the unique impressions from an Israeli crowd watching this utterly Yiddishe story set in 1950s Lower East Side New York -- especially how they reacted to Holocaust references. Hoffman, who recently interviewed director Safdie about the film for Vanity Fair, gives us the inside scoop on the crazy cast of characters that flesh out the "junkyard Jews" at the heart of the tale. The pair keeps the conversation very general -- no spoilers! -- for the first half of the episode, but then get Talmudically into the weeds for the second. Hear about our very first unreserved top-marking "not bad" from both hosts on this week's The Reel Schmooze. Whether he's playing billiards or table tennis, a successful hustler requires no small amount of charisma, something Timothée Chalamet's ping-pong pro undeniably has in Marty Supreme, though it's of a decidedly different flavor than that of Paul Newman in The Hustler. Whether that charisma translates to a character we want to root for as he makes a mess of his own life, as well as those of the people (and one unfortunate dog) around him, is up for debate in our discussion of Josh Safdie's new anxiety attack in movie form. Then we pit Marty's game against Fast Eddie's as we move into Connections to discuss the magic and morality of hustling, charismatic liars and the women who are drawn to them — even when they can see right through them — and whether these men chasing victory on their own terms, and at the cost of everything else, is inspirational or pitiful. Then in Your Next Picture Show, Scott sticks up for The Color of Money, Scorsese's Hustler sequel that can't quite best its predecessor, but still has plenty of swagger all its own.  Please share your thoughts about The Hustler, Marty Supreme, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
