This week we continue our "Mann Movies" theme with the highly underrate crime thriller Manhunter (1986)I was absolutely blown away by how precendental and trend setting this film is. Based on the book that introduced the iconic serial killer Hannibal Lector, Manhunter lays the foundation for the massive crime thriller genre that would blow up in the 90s and early 2000s. I gave this film a 9/10 for offering a perfect 80s score, some of the best cinematography I've ever seen, and A-class acting all around. I'm so far very impressed with Michael Mann's early films. Anthony Hopkins has defined the popular conception of Hannibal Lector and, by extension, the erudite serial killer. But before The Silence of the Lambs there was Manhunter (1986), Michael Mann's thriller featuring the first appearance of Dr. Lecter (or Dr. Lecktor, as his name is spelled in the film). Mike loves it for its shots of men brooding over bodies of water as they make decisions and finds it “the most Michael Manliest” of the director's output; Dan thinks the setup is great but that the film becomes unruly and less tidy than the genre demands. There's a lot of bickering in this one, although both agree that Brian Cox is terrific. Manhunter is an adaptation of Red Dragon, Thomas Harris's 1981 bestseller. Disney had already created an impressive catalogue of witches by the time the company embarked on its first feature length film, so it came as no surprise their first feature length film antagonist would be a witch. I continue to interview guests on my podcast, Your Intended Message. Please tune in because it's the podcast about communication in business. Your Intended Message. Sometimes the guest says, thank you for having me. Yuck, I didn't have you. There are two ways to interpret this phrase. You were either - duped or eaten. The past tense of have is had. If you were had, that usually means you were cheated. I didn't cheat you. The other interpretation of have is eaten. What did you have for lunch? A hamburger. It was delicious. What did you have for dessert? A crème Brule. Who did you have yesterday? That's a relevant question for Hannibal Lector. Remember Hannibal the Cannibal. He could answer, I had a census taker along with a nice chianti and fava beans. I suppose that the ghost of that census taker could say, “Thank you for having me. Trust that I was delicious” Stop saying thank you for having me. It's gross. It's not as well known as Jonathan Demme's “Silence of the Lambs” but it stands out in its own special ways with some genuinely creepy and memorable performances. We're talking about Michael Mann's third feature film from 1986, “Manhunter”. It stars William Petersen, Tom Noonan, Dennis Farina, Joan Allen and a criminally underrated performance by Brian Cox as “Hannibal Lector”. Go watch this.
