Send us a textOn nearly every previous episode of You, Me and An Album, Al has invited a guest to introduce him to one album he doesn't know well (or at all), but this week's guest talks about seven of his favorite albums. Mike Montgomery, who owns Candyland Recording Studio in Dayton, Kentucky, and is a member of R.Ring and Ampline, suggested 11 possible albums to discuss on this episode, but he and Al weren't able to narrow the list down. So Mike talks about seven of those albums (noted in the rundown below). Not only were they unable to settle on one album from Mike's list, but Mike also suggested that Al introduce him to some of his favorite albums. From Al's short list of eight albums, he decided to discuss three of them on this episode, bringing the total albums featured up to an even 10.Mike explains how his love of skateboarding led him down a musical rabbit hole that ultimately brought him to several of the albums on his list. Al talks about his tendency to immerse himself in a single artist's discography, and how that led him to discover several of the albums that made his short list.Mike also discusses his Nervous Verbs solo project and the debut Nervous Verbs album Pony Coughing, which will be out on February 28. He explains why he decided to not record his Nervous Verbs songs with his other bands and talks about some of the musicians he collaborated with for this project. There are several places to keep up with Mike and his bands on Instagram, and they're all worth a follow!@candyland_recording_studio@nervousverbs@r.ringsings@amplinegramAl is on Bluesky at @almelchior.bsky.social. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "Deep Sea Diver" theme with the more recent nautical film Underwater (2020). This movie was much better than the critics gave it credit for, but it still wasn't perfect. There was a great sense of atmosphere and the special effects and cinematography were very well done. I also appreciated the references to Alien (1979) and the works of H.P. Lovecraft. I gave this film a 7/10 for having a unique narrative arch and a good cast, but it just fell short on greatness and lagged around the halfway point. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our "Deep Sea Diver" theme with the body horror creature feature Leviathan (1989). This film is an almost carbon copy of other films like Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) but with a deep sea tilt to it. It also has an interesting twist on the monster, with it being a sort of intellegence consuming mutated fish. I gave this film a 7/10 for being consistently entertaining and boasting a great set design as well as high quality practical effects, but with some characters that don't age very well and a lackluster climax, it could have been a little bit better. Being a strict fitness enthusiast, food connoisseur, and cigar aficionado Sal is no stranger to the Good and Evil in our lives. His origin story began with food industry work and a love for how it brought everyone together.
In Call Me an American, Captain Cao's triumphant journey of sacrifice and perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds, speaks to the enduring power and promise of the American dream. Deeply relatable and unapologetically honest, Captain Cao shares hard-fought lessons as a war refugee, combat veteran, and political candidate to remind readers that the fight to preserve our Republic begins with the same uniquely American values which are under attack today. From failure to humility, from faith to victory, Call Me an American, is an anthem to the imperfectly exceptional country that provided him refuge from the destruction of communism. From his childhood growing up in sub-Saharan Africa to his years fighting to preserve life as a Naval Officer in Special Operations, Captain Cao refutes the insidious narrative that the American dream is no longer accessible or achievable. Instead, he uses his gift of storytelling to expose the lies threatening meritocracy, equality, and individual liberty. Telehealth - Taliesin Grid a 2023 single on Very Famous. Telehealth is the Seattle-based project of Alexander Attitude (Deep Sea Diver, Brian John Appleby) and Kendra Cox (Lemolo) that make Devo-esque synthscapes targeting capitalism and the absurdities of our modern world. Their debut album Content Oscillator was released in March and specifically delves into Alexander Attitude's transition from musician to architect and back to musician, after discovering his disillusionment with their utopian visions and the aesthetics of sustainability which consequently became a tool for developers to sit comfortably within a political domain that is essentially capitalist and centrist. Our Song of the Day “Taliesin Grid” specifically hones in on this idea. “Straight line, black suit /Just when you see it, start to move /Not made, great men /Stuck in repetition,” Attitude declares in monotone over arpeggiated synths. He continues on, “A name that still survives /Dank Lloyd Wright /Architects they come, yeah /Architects they go /But materials finite.” Content Oscillator features production from Trevor Spencer (Valley Maker, Spirit Award, Deep Sea Diver, Chastity Belt) and mastering by the legendary Ed Brooks. UNDERWATER ALIENS not of EARTH abduct DEEP SEA DIVER during OPEN WATER exploration and DISCOVERY One woman, heading top exploration studies into the unknown waters deep in the Norwegian Sea, seeks assistance in finding missing diving partner who was taken by what appear to be underwater alien life forms. Not wanting to take traditional routes to find this man, as most would consider him long gone, she reaches out to the unconventional for help in initiating communications, and to make sense of where her partner is and what has happened.
Host Luke Burbank and announcer Elena Passarello remember the things we were better at as children; celebrated poet Kaveh Akbar explains how learning Farsi as his first language shaped his poetic sense of the English language; writer Danielle Henderson (Feminist Ryan Gosling) unpacks her memoir The Ugly Cry and how her iconoclastic grandmother helped forge her own fiercely independent path; and indie rock group Deep Sea Diver performs "Impossible Weight," the title track off their newest album.
Welcome to Tape Op's DISCussion, where we call our friends and music community notables to talk about their favorite records. For this episode we chat with Deep Sea Diver's Jessica Dobson about David Bowie's 1980 release, Scary Monsters. Enjoy! Sponsored by JBL Professional jblpro.com/en-us
One of the strangest things I've ever witnessed happened on a body recovery mission.
When this week's guest, producer/audio engineer Paul Mahern, discovered 'Easter Everywhere' by Texas psychedelic rock band 13th Floor Elevators in the early 80s, he was a punk rock loving musician (Indianapolis Indiana's Zero Boys) looking to expand his musical horizons. He got all that he bargained for and more with this wonderfully dense, expansive and mind-blowing record by a band - led by Tommy Hall and Roky Erickson - that went all-in on their spirituality-through-psychedelics ideals. "You're moving, keep climbing...leave your body behind." Songs featured in this episode: I've Got Levitation (live, 1967) - 13th Floor Elevators; Vicious Circle - Zero Boys; Forecast - Diane Coffee (feat. Deep Sea Diver); Lucifer Sam - Pink Floyd; You're Gonna Miss Me - 13th Floor Elevators; Night of the Vampire - Roky Erickson; Slip Inside This House, Slide Machine - 13th Floor Elevators; Monkey Island - Powell St John; She Lives (In a Time of Her Own) - The Judybats; She Lives (In a Time of Her Own) - 13th Floor Elevators; Let's Spend The Night Together - The Rolling Stones; Nobody To Love - 13th Floor Elevators; D.C.B.A.-25 - Jefferson Airplane; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue - Bob Dylan; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, Earthquake - 13th Floor Elevators; I Look Around - Rain Parade; Things'll Never Be The Same - Spacemen 3; Dust - 13th Floor Elevators; Think (Let Tomorrow Bee) - Sebadoh; I've Got Levitation, I Had To Tell You - 13th Floor Elevators; Sweet Virginia - The Rolling Stones; Universal Soldier - Buffy Sainte Marie; Postures (Leave Your Body Behind) - 13th Floor Elevators; Earthquake - Butthole Surfers
