As Chucky said, "Didn't even get a franchise." So let's dig into why that happened in 2007's "Dead Silence" with otherwise reliable franchise-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell.
"Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children, only dolls. If you see her in your dreams, be sure to never, ever scream..." Cat got your tongue? Well, that's what happens when you piss off a 20th-century ventriloquist! Don't be a dummy and speak her name. And if you ever see the miraculous Mary Shaw, Dead Silence is the only way to speak kindly to her. Next movie: Blair Witch (2016) ————————————————————— We officially have merch! Welcome to CHUCKYVISION, a podcast about the horror franchise Child's Play and the main character, Chucky the Good Guy Doll. Split Picks is back to venture into dream worlds and nightmares from one of the modern master of horror's great franchises. Well, Split Picks aimed to record an episode every month this year. But things got busy, OK? So Jim Hickcox is once again in the host throne to field Split Picks' first international call. Terry Chiu (Open Doom Crescendo and Mangoshake director), and Mark Hanson of the Bay Street Video Podcast call in from Canada. Together, Split Picks heads into the Further to talk about the first two Insidious films. When Jim and Terry spoke earlier this year, Terry promised watching Insidious and Insidious 2 back-to-back was the ultimate cinematic experience. The narratives collide in ways that few franchises manage to achieve successfully. So everyone watched them as a pair and have gathered to report back to see if Terry's promises holds up. The creator of the Saw, Conjuring and Insidious franchises, plus Malignant and Dead Silence (and don't forget Aquaman and Furious 7), James Wan has earned his title as the most influential modern director of horror. With Insidious and Insidious 2, Wan follows a family that comes to realize their new house may be haunted. Along the way they encounter mysterious dream worlds, lost souls, and a team of paranormal experts who may help them escape their situation. Throughout, the crew debate Wan's standing in horror by diving deep into how his strengths — and his lesser tendencies — became so influential.

The house in Harrisville, Rhode Island is not clean. In fact it's filthy, lousy with supernatural yuck. That's bad news for whoever inhabits it, and no one's going to have it worse than the Perrons—father Roger (Ron Livingston), mother Carolyn (Lili Taylor), and their five daughters. When the otherworldly rumblings get out of hand, who they gonna call? In this case, it's the OG Ghostbusters, Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga). To say what happens next would be a spoiler, and we don't do that without a warning. But after our forays into James Wan's Dead Silence and Insidious, allow us to say that The Conjuring is a cool breath of delightfully fetid air. As a director, we can thank James Wan for the massively popular horror franchises called Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. But he's also had one of two stumbles at the box office. Case in point: Dead Silence! Big thanks to Alexandra Burwood (@obsessafilma) for suggesting this movie. PS: this episode is a bit shorter than usual, and it's my fault. We had an irritating audio glitch in the mid-section, so I had to cut about six minutes. To make up for it, Alexandra will be back soon to discuss a widely detested sequel that she likes. Hello and welcome listeners to Episode 226 of Journey with a Cinephile: A Horror Movie Podcast. In this episode, your tour guide, David Garrett Jr., moves into March and goes back into celebrating Centennial Club. The first feature is from 1924 and it is The Hands of Orlac. I'm pairing it with Stopmotion (2023). What I like here is that we have a silent film and form of animation that is used less. This double feature captures by-gone techniques. We also have leads descending into madness. Also on this episode are Mini-Reviews of The Evil of Frankenstein (1964), Dead Silence (2007), Bring It On: Cheer or Die (2022), Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986), brief review of Class of 1984 (1982), Blade II (2002) and an episode of The Twilight Zone. Mary joins Caitlin to talk about horror movies that deserve a second chance. These movies aren't necessarily "underrated" (because that means different things to different people, especially depending upon familiarity with the genre), but they're movies that got written off too soon. They deserve a second look; at least we think they do. Let us know if there are any you'd add to the list.

The Halloweenies take a quick post-holidays vacay to Raven's Fair to discuss James Wan's 2007 supernatural horror film, Dead Silence. Together, Dan Caffrey, McKenzie Gerber, Michael Roffman, and Justin Gerber discuss Wan's bleached out style, the muddled mythology, Donnie Wahlberg's scene-stealing performance, and, naturally, 2010's Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. NFL Security agent Lawrence Cutter's standard background check of number-one draft prospect Eugene Patterson should have been easy work. It was – until he learned of the animal sacrifice, and that was just the beginning of his unfortunate discoveries. It's past midnight in Memphis, and Cutter is on the run, trying to avoid the “Pitter-Patterson” of little feet. Following the unexpected arrival of a ventriloquist dummy on his doorstep, and the sudden, violent death of his wife – two events that might be related – Jamie Ashen is arrested by Detective Lipton, a cop with a thing for electric razors. Lipton's also a by the books kind of guy who's convinced Jamie is responsible for his wife's death. But Jamie doesn't have time for games — he's determined to find out who or what killed his wife and tore her tongue out in the process. His search takes him back to his home town of Raven's Fair, where the superstitious residents suspect the spectral Mary Shaw, a long-dead ventriloquist, may be to blame. Seems Shaw was connected to the disappearance and ritual murder of families years back, then became the victim herself of a heinous crime. With Lipton on his tail, Jamie visits his aging father Edward, his young wife Ella, local mortician Henry and his demented wife Marion, who unspool a tale too fantastic to be true. And slowly, the truth about Raven's Fair reveals itself to Jamie's unsuspecting, and for now human, eyeballs. For more information go to https://bit.ly/FORTHEPEOPLEBW Don't miss out on the fun, subscribe today! https://bit.ly/3Fu6lxx Johnny Spoiler and crew talk about energy vampires and toxic people in our lives. They try to avoid talking about controversial topics to avoid suppression by Google's algorithm. They also joke about being more popular than Black Adam and come up with a plot for a movie featuring themselves. The crew discusses monsters and which ones they would choose to be if they had to choose. They talk about vampires and the challenges of being one, such as the difficulty of obtaining a food supply and the risk of being caught on camera. They also mention other monsters, such as shapeshifters and hide behinds. The conversation briefly touches on a movie called "The Watcher" and a genetically engineered dog. The crew also talks about their preference for leaving pets out of horror movies. Johnny Spoiler and crew discuss TV and movies, including Quentin Tenino's supposed last movie, which might be about seventies movie critic Pauline Kael. They also discuss Andy Kaufman's induction into the WWE Hall of Fame and his history in real wrestling. Jordan Peele's upcoming Christmas movie is also mentioned. The crew also briefly talks about their own podcast and ads. The crew discusses the movie "Vampire's Kiss," starring Nicolas Cage. They describe the plot, which involves Cage's character becoming convinced he's a vampire after being bitten by a woman. They also discuss some behind-the-scenes details, such as Cage's insistence on using a real bat in a scene and eating a real cockroach in another scene. They also mention some humorous moments in the film and Cage's inspiration for certain lines and actions. Johnny Spoiler and crew discuss their favorite bits from the movie Vampire's Kiss, starring Nicolas Cage. Johnny Spoiler mentions the scene where Cage's character is buying fake teeth and his slow descent into madness. Dangerous Dave talks about how Maria Conchita Alonso, who typically plays a badass character, plays a victim in this film. The crew also mentions Cage's character terrorizing his assistant, particularly the scene where he jumps on her desk and declares himself a vampire. Another favorite scene mentioned is the one where Cage's character goes through the entire alphabet. Despite being an awful boss, Cage's character is still likable and quirky. The crew is discussing the Fandango YouTube channel and their interest in AI. Jordan Savage mentions a question from a Fandango interview about which possessed doll would be the top doll if they were in the same movie. The crew lists various dolls and movies with creepy dolls, including Annabelle, Chucky, May, the dolls from Dolls, and the puppets from Puppet Master. Dangerous Dave suggests the dolls from Tales from the Hood, specifically the ones from the civil war era that come after white people to kill them. Johnny Spoiler also briefly mentions the overlooked movie Dead Silence. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
