On this episode, Derek and Aaron discuss 2000's science fiction psychological horror film "The Cell" directed by Tarsem Singh. They talk about how style over substance helps this movie, the Hollywoodization of mental illness and serial killers, and how much of the plot takes place as a true crime thriller vs the dream horror scenes. They also get into how the cast features Jennifer Lopez, Vincent D'Onofrio and a slew of character actors, Tarsem Singh's music video directing career, and many other aspects of the film. When the Loom starts attacking Gary Seven's office, Voyager's away team beams down to a Tarsem Singh situation. But when Dal brings Maj'El into the quantum equation, Wesley's calculations open a hole that tank-top Janeway allows the cadets to go through. Which TV show do sick kids need today? Whose phone has been disconnected? What's both embarrassing and tragic? Larry Fessenden is a producer, director, and the founder of Glass Eye Pix. Above all, he is a lover of cinema and not afraid to get involved in the technical process and do the work. In fact, he prefers it. A performer in his own right, when Larry isn't making films, he's starring in them.In many ways, Larry is a local legend and icon of the horror genre. His career spans over 40+ years and 20+ films throughout which he has earned a spirit award and acknowledgment from the Criterion Collection. His production company Glass Eye Pix, has not only been a film school of sorts for successful directors like Ti West, he's even invested in their earlier work.Larry is a fascinating case study of what it takes to make your film when you're up against all the odds.

Join hosts Gaius and Jackson as we celebrate a monumental milestone—200 episodes of Back To The Blockbuster! In this exciting episode, we dive deep into the intriguing world of science fiction and psychological thrillers, exploring two standout films that we individually picked because the other had yet to see the film. First up is Jackson's pick for Gaius as we unravel the mind-bending narrative of "Coherence," directed by James Ward Byrkit and featuring stellar performances from a relatively unknown cast. Discover how this indie gem plays with the concept of parallel realities and the complexity of human relationships during a fateful dinner party. Next, Gaius' choice for Jackson allows us to shift gears to examine Tarsem Singh's visually arresting "The Cell," starring Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, and Vincent D'Onofrio. We discuss the film's unique blend of horror and psychological depth, as well as its artistic direction and bold storytelling. Tune in for a nostalgic journey as the hosts reflect on our favorite moments from both films, share behind-the-scenes trivia, and reveal what makes these movies unforgettable within their genres. Whether you're a die-hard fan of science fiction or a lover of psychological thrillers, this episode promises to be an exhilarating ride through the cinematic landscape. Visionary director Tarsem Singh joins Kiriko to reflect on The Fall (2006), once dubbed by the filmmaker himself as “the most expensive passion project” until Megalopolis. A film nearly derailed by Harvey Weinstein, The Fall has since been reclaimed by a dedicated fanbase, championed by figures like Roger Ebert. Now with a stunning 4K restoration, this cult classic is ripe for rediscovery—an ode to the enduring power of storytelling. Seventeen years in the making, spanning 27 countries, the film captures breathtaking beauty—both human and natural—in a visual tapestry unlike any other. Tarsem shares the challenges of realizing such an ambitious project, from shooting in remote, inaccessible locations to the personal motivation behind this pursuit. The director Tarsem Singh first made a name for himself in the ‘90s making iconic music videos for bands like R.E.M. and Dream Warriors. In 2000, he captured moviegoers' imaginations with the sci-fi thriller, “The Cell,” starring Jennifer Lopez. His latest movie, “Dear Jassi,” is based on the real-life story of Jassi Sidhu, a young Sikh woman from Vancouver who was kidnapped and murdered while visiting the man she secretly married against the wishes of her family. Tarsem sits down with Tom to talk about this tragic love story, and why it was also pretty personal to him.

It's episode 279...and do you believe there is a part of yourself, deep inside in your mind, with things you don't want other people to see? The Cell (2000) follows the FBI as they pursue nefarious serial killer Carl Rudolph Stargher, who imprisons his victims in glass prisons that will gradually fill with water. When Stargher's capture leaves him comatose, special agent Peter Novak turns to a team of scientists using experimental technology to enter the minds of their subjects. Can child psychologist Catherine Deane invade Stargher's mind and successfully uncover the location of his final victim? Or will she herself become a victim of Stargher's nightmarish mindscape? We talk about a surprising and underrated gem, break down the interesting career of Tarsem Singh and his artistic points of reference, ask whether Christopher Nolan may have seen the film when drafting early versions of Inception and wonder if the FBI should or shouldn't make use of the experimental brain-diving technology they've discovered. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Mocky-Lock is a pain in the ass. Next time we're catching up with one of the most talked about horror films of 2023 - Talk to Me.
Welcome to The Cell, Tarsem Singh's beautiful and haunting vision brought to the big screen in this awe-inspiring SciFi-horror. Starring Jenny from the block and a couple of Vinces we are brought into the mind of a twisted serial killer in a desperate attempt to find and free his final victim from certain death. This film performed very well at the box office but was split in the critical realm where some found it to wander while others saw a careful balance between the various plots, characters, and locations. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate techno handkerchiefs and kink-shaming as we dive deep into each other's brain holes in an attempt to find if The Cell is surrealist hell, or surreally swell.

This was my first in person podcast recording and I had the pleasure to talk to Tarsem Singh Sandhu. Tarsem Singh Sandhu is a notable figure in the Sikh community for his advocacy for the right to wear the turban while working as a bus driver in Wolverhampton, England in the 1960s. He was one of the first Sikh bus drivers in the country to wear a turban and grow his beard and as a result faced discrimination, including a two year suspension by the Wolverhampton Transport Committee. Despite facing opposition, Sandhu stood firm in his beliefs and refused to remove his turban, becoming a symbol of strength and resilience for the Sikh community. His actions paved the way for greater religious freedom in the workplace, ensured a conversation in the House of Lords and forced a change in UK law. 00:00 - Introduction 00:30 - Quick summary 01:26 - When did you come to the UK and what was the reason for it? 03:55 - What was the UK like? 06:04 - Can you describe the events that took place between your arrival in the UK and becoming a bus driver? 12:20 - Why did you decide to drive a bus if things were going well? 17:40 - Newspapers at the time reported that you were clean-shaven when you started your job. Is this true and what was the reason for it? 18:37 - What occurred on the first day you went to work wearing a turban? 20:34 - How old are you at this point? 20:49 - What occurred during the two-year suspension period? 21:56 - Why did you choose to move elsewhere after the two years had passed? 26:28 - What was the "mad-hatters" counter protest? 28:27 - What did other workers think of the agitation and how did that lead into creating the fake Indo-Pak Workers Association? 29:23 - Mr Sohan Singh Jolly's declaration of self-immolation 34:46 - Before Sohan Singh made the announcement, did you know? 37:11 - Once Mr Sohan Singh Jolly declares to self-immolate if the turban ban isn't lifted, what happens? 37:59 - Did you know of anyone who started to wear a turban because of the change you had enforced? 38:34 - What has happened since the 1970s? 43:30 - What do you do today? 44:39 - What was Enoch Powell actually like? 45:41 - How Enoch Powell helped two of Tarsem Singh Sandhu's cousins 47:33 - Slight interruption... 49:27 - Have you seen this Daily Mirror cartoon making light of the situation? 51:01 - Conclusion 51:26 - Wrapping up ★ Join the Ramblings of a Sikh YouTube Channel ★ ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ ★ Buy this podcast a coffee ★
Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb. This is the podcast where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this week's episode, the guys are once again joined by Jose from the Watch/Skip+ podcast to discuss one of the most visually stunning but woefully underseen films - The Fall (2006). A passion project from director Tarsem Singh, The Fall was four years in the making and largely financed by the director himself. The Fall is easily one of the most unique films you'll ever see, however, the DVD and Blu-ray will cost you a pretty penny. Should you pony up the funds to chase down this film on eBay or is this just some fancy eye candy with little substance? Listen and find out!Timestamps -Intro - (1:17), Box Office Results and Critical Response - (17:28), Behind the Camera - (27:21), In Front of the Camera - (35:28), Production and Development - (42:42), Commerical Break - (46:48), The Fall Discussion - (48:36), Is It a Bomb? - (96:35), Listener Feedback - (102:42), Outro - (122:04)The Fall (2006) is directed by Tarsem Singh and stars Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru, and Justine Waddell. Performer, writer, director, and general cool human Jessica Martin sits down with us, to then take "The Fall," (2006) Based on “Yo Ho Ho,” (1981). Starring; Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru, and Justine Waddell. A fantasy/adventure gem Directed and co-written by Tarsem Singh (The Cell, Mirror Mirror), and produced (?) by Spike Jonze, and David Fincher (maybe). We get swept away in the discussion of storytelling via color coding, Lee Pace, the greatness of practical effects, and the sheer power of Blu-Ray (tm). A film that must be experienced directly to truly understand, but we take a swing. Plot: In a hospital just outside of 1920s LA, an injured stuntman tells a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm, a fantastic story about 5 mythical heroes. We've arrived! It's the season seven finale to determine the next super mondo champion of champions! Sure, this game opens with a round based on sweaty wordplay, with round two building into a series metatextual mashup clues that combine multiple mediums. And yes, it culminates in a lightning round where the leaderboard is constantly shifting. But this is the finals, darnit, so returning champs Liz, Derek, and Matthew are all operating at a very high level, so the competition cannot be more tense. I had to stop writing this episode description to go pat myself down with a cool wet towel just from recalling how intense everything got. And I'm working from home today, so I forgot to put on Old Spice, so now the sweat has really cooked up a nasty stench in my general vicinity. And when it comes to straight up B.O., I wouldn't necessarily say that everyone loves their own brand
This week we're hitting it Greek style, as Superman takes on the titans all while we discuss the third film in Tarsem SIngh's filmography ‘Immortals' with the help of patron of the show David Powell! Immortals is a 2011 American fantasy action film directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Luke Evans, John Hurt, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Freida Pinto, Joseph Morgan, Daniel Sharman, and Mickey Rourke. The film was previously named Dawn of War and War of the Gods before being officially named Immortals. It uses motifs of the Greek myths of Theseus, the return of the Heraclids, the Minotaur, and the Titanomachy, but the plot does not resemble any coherent narrative originating from Greek mythology.
